OpenSUSE Hardware :: Hp Scanjet 3300c And Libusb Errors On 11.2 - System Freezes Up
Feb 12, 2010
I've been using this scanner on various suse builds all the way back to version 8. This week I installed OpenSuse on a brand new computer and when I run xsane, I receive these messages.
[Code]....
The scanner will scan for a few seconds and then the entire system freezes up.

how to possible to configure the buttons on my scanner (HP Scanjet 3300C - it's an old one) to actually perform the tasks they're intended to do. The scanner itself works absolutely perfect despite its age (over a decade old).. however it has two physical buttons with a scanner and a printer icon on it. Now I don't particularly care much for the scan button, but it would be awesome if the print button automatically send whatever it's scanning to the printer as soon as it's done.
The only two things I could find that seem to be written with the idea to fulfill this role are KScannerButtons and scanbuttond. Both haven't received an update in years (2006 and 2007) and only seem to be good for spitting out an error. I also tried installing hp-lib, but it doesn't even recognize the printer (I'm guessing HP doesn't support hardware that old). Not sure if it would get me further even it was recognized.

I get this error when I run gedit as root in terminal. GConf Error: Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See GConf configuration system for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.)
So I looked around and found something about running a system check. Well I really couldn't find to much but I did find the command fsck and running it with the -n option this is what I got.
[Code]...
As you can see I have some orphaned inodes and these are probley from a Yast2 crashing a couple of times on me getting lockup because a repo was down or not responding.

I am running 11.2 64 bit on a Dell Vostro machine. I am unable to get piklab to connect to a PICKit 2 over USB. I have created a file /etc/udev/rules.d/26-microchip.rules which contains the line:
ATTR{idVendor}=="04d8", ATTR{idProduct}=="0033", OWNER:="root", GROUP:="users",MODE:="0660"
This gives a node /dev/bus/usb/006/002 with attributes crw-rw---- owner root group user. The device is rear/write to any member of the "users" group. In piklab the dialogue "Configure Piklab" reached through the menu Programmer->Settings... on the Preogrammer Selection the Port Selection tab displays USB Connection:Error. After much research I find that there may be problems with the libusb library under 11.2 so I try to see what is returned by lsusb. I enter the command:
sudo lsusb -v -s 006:002
this returns:
Bus 006 Device 002: ID 04d8:0033 Microchip Technology, Inc.
Device Descriptor:
bLength 18
bDescriptorType 1
bcdUSB 2.00
bDeviceClass 0 (Defined at Interface level)
[code]....
This shows that the udev mechanism appears to be finding the device and all the data is being collected but the last line looks ominous.
What does "cannot read device status, Broken pipe (32)" mean and where does it come from? Is this the cause of the USB connection error?

Whenever I try to scan documents (OpenSuse 11.1) with any of the available tools (such as scanlite, kooka, or xsane), I can only scan in color. Moreover, the result is basically unusable. I shows a turquoise background of differing intensity at various places. Why isn't there a possibility to scan black and white, grayscale, etc.? Seems like scanning still is a problem in Linux. I really don't want to have to "fall back" to M$-Windows for scanning, but that seems to be the only solution at the moment

I have OpenSuSe 11.2 64-bit installed on my HP Compaq 6730s laptop. When I'm trying to switch user black screen appears and my system does not react on any key combinations (ctrl+alt+del; ctrl+alt+F7 ...). This was not reproduced before ATI driver installation.

Cisco vpn client would freeze the system. The only way to recover is to do a hard reset. The funny thing is I had it working before, so it may be random. However, it just happened 3 times in a row and I haven't tried again. I'll try again tonight. I'm pretty sure I'm running the latest client for 64bit linux systems. I'll confirm that when I get a chance, as well as my kernel.

I upgraded my Dell 2.53G machine from 10.3 to 11.2 (KDE desktop). Everything seemed fine for the first day. Then the whole desktop froze. No screen update, no keyboard, and, though you could see the mouse move, clicking didn't do anything. The only way out was to pull the plug.
After multiple attempts at fixing it failed, I repartitioned the disk and tried a "clean install". Everything worked for about 2 hours. The system is currently frozen. The harddrive is quiet. The only "3rd party app" was Adobe Flash, pulled from the Non-OSS repository.

The last message is ATA3 Exception EMASK. I have uploaded the /var/boot.msg here klogd 1.4.1, log source = ksys - Suse Freeze - CuQAd3dg - Pastebin. There are no other log files!
My system:
Intel Core2duo
Mother board Intel DG31PR

Does anyone know where there might be a log of the shutdown errors I see flash on the screen when I shutdown the system? I thought they'd be in the warning log. Or is there a way to freeze that screen so I can actually read what is happening?

I've installed SLES 11 SP1 as a VM on my Hyper-V/Win2008R2, HP DL380G6 QuadCore, total 18GB RAM, 4GB assigned to the VM. The installation does not include a gui and everything works as expected. The hv-modules are visible but the systems freezes while I
- backup the system with Symantec BackupExec 2010/RALUS
- run an rsync from my physical P DL360G5
I have to powercyle the VM to reestablish a connection i.e. to CUPS by browser or to open a new session by ssh. Why SLES crashes on hyper-V or what I can do here?

The system frequently freezes the screen. The mouse is still moveable but there is no reaction on any click. Keyboard does not work either (pushing Num-Lock does not toggle the Num-Lock light on the keyboard). However, Alt-Print-b works for a reboot. The only other way out is to turn of the computer.I had this effect some time ago where I thought it was a problem due to the NVIDIA graphics driver. Since then, I changed back to the standard VESA driver and thought the problem would be gone. Just a thought
I toggled through the log files in /var/log which had the file date/time of the crash but I could not find any hint.Which log files could I look as well to dig for the problem? Or any idea for such an effect?

Im running opensuse 11.2 on Linux 2.6.31.5-0.1 64Bit, KDE 4.3.1 with 4GB RAM, Intel duo core processor with Intel graphics card. I initially had opensuse 11.1, which i removed and installed 11.2. Initially everything. Then came the problem, the system starts up fine but then after a few hours freezes, monitor powers off and it wont accept commands from the keyboard or mouse. Meanwhile the lights (caps lock, numeric and scroll) on the keyboard blink. The power light is still on and i can hear the hard disk turning.
I have to forcefully turn the power off and restart but can freeze again after random periods.I do lengthy and demanding computations and its common for the PC to run for weeks without turning it off.

I bought the wireless PCI network card WMP600N from Linksys. I tried to connect with my router, but no success. The correct driver is installed(RT2800), the necessary package WPA_supplement is also installed. My providers settings are WPA-PSK with a shared key. Key encryption is TKIP. I can't choose TKIP in the Yast network menu. so i chose passphrase.
the weird thing is that the wifimanager says WEP is on but it's not, at least not in my router and i did not setup WEP to. see picture 6. i had to use manual boot "ifup wlan0" because when i use boot at startup the whole systeem freezes. anyway, when i use ifup wlan0 as root in the konsole, the system also freezes. i have explained it clearly, please take a look a the pictures.
step1
step2
step3
step4 After pressing enter the system freezes.

I noticed that after making my build in suse studio my system freezes immediately after GRUB ( Normal or Failsafe) boot splash screen. I also noticed that this happens only with the specified kernel below. I'm not sure when using Kernel 2.6.37, one had the same problem. I never used it. The original kernel 2.6.34 had no problems such as the one I have described. My systems has no further problems only that it takes several restarts to go past the "Freeze". Below is a list of my system specs:
openSUSE 11.3
Kernel-pae 2.6.38.2-4.1 from Kernel Stable.
GRUB 0.97-174.1 from openSUSE 11.4
Upstart 0.6.5-33.1
xorg-x11-server 7.6_1.9.3-142.1 from X11:xorg 11.3 repo.
The GRUB from openSUSE 11.4 has been very stable and non-problematic. I will be buying an Intel core i5-2500K in a few months that's why I need the latest kernel and XOrg-X11-server. What could be causing the freezing?

This box was formerly running Ubuntu Server x64 9.04 on the same hardware and ran just fine. I have now turned it into a media center box running Ubuntu Desktop x64 9.10. Since this has been installed it freezes about once a day. When that happens I can't do anything with it, can't even SSH. Also, and current SSH sessions die and exit. I have checked every log under /var/log but I have not found the problem. There does not seem to crash after any certain amount of time, just after several hours of sitting idle.
Below are a few examples of the last entires in several logs. Note for the clocksource error I have already forced it to use different ones in my kernel options and rebooted but it still crashes, still with no errors to tell me what went wrong. I also know the rsyslog error is caused by a bug and would not cause the crash.

Now if I attempt to print the test page via the printer control panel from windows, I get the following sets of error:

Downloaded and copied to a usb pen drive the latest debian testing snapshot netinstall iso:
wget url
then
dd if=debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso of=/dev/sdb
Everything went fine, even the install part. After the 1st boot, problems started. I've never seen so much errors after a first install and probably they are all reported.
1. ata_id[297]: HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed for '/dev/sdb'
2. mkdir: cannot create directory `/run/udev/rules.d/': Read-only file system
3. startpar: service(s) returned failure: udev ... failed!
4. INIT: Id "co" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
5. eth0 doesn't automatically start; one has to start it via ifup eth0
After that, installed a minimal xserver-xorg-core, xserver-xorg-video-radeon and kde-plasma-desktop.
I'm unable to use the newly DE environment, the screen just freezes, I'm guessing because of the udev error.
I have to restart via Magic SysRQ key:
Alt+PrtScr+S > Alt+PrtScr+U > Alt+PrtScr+B

I have Mythbuntu 10.04 installed on an exclusive HTPC and working great... until tonight. After letting the system update some packages (161 packages if I remember right), I suddenly have an issue where the graphical system won't start. After researching I found three error messages that might be causing that.
1. At the start of splash screen I see "UUID=xxxxxxxCD7 not ready yet or not present" I checked in /etc/fstab and found that this is the swap partition. I don't remember seeing this before so this could be the culprit.
2. I'm not at the computer in question right now but I saw a Plymouth error about "mountall" and then the message "plymouth command failed". Not sure if this could be the main error.
3. after a while (usually ca. 1-2 min) I receive thousands of errors of the kind "out of memory"... "kill process XXXX" (process vary wildly e.g. dbus-daemon, mysql, etc)... "process killed"..."respawning"
After error 3, I'm not able to switch to graphical console (ctrl-alt-F7). If I was in the graphical console at this moment, I simply can't switch to the CLI console. I'm always afraid of updating my system since I've seen lots of things breaking afterwards (usually the proprietary graphic drivers) but this is really strange.
