Ubuntu :: Computer Makes A Buzz Sound On System Shutdown And Restart
May 3, 2010For some time now, my laptop makes a quick but loud buzz sound when I shutdown or restart it. Muting my sounds doesn't fix it. Before, it didn't do this. It just started one day and got worse till it happened everytime I shutdown or restart.
Going to preferences > sounds > changing sound theme to no sounds helped a bit and after doing this, it doesn't happen all the time anymore. This is quite disturbing especially when I'm in libraries. What worries me the most though is that it might affect my speaker.
I'm using Karmic btw.

Jul 13, 2011Does anyone know where there might be a log of the shutdown errors I see flash on the screen when I shutdown the system? I thought they'd be in the warning log. Or is there a way to freeze that screen so I can actually read what is happening?

Mar 5, 2011I have a netbook, on which I installed the netbook remix. It had ran fine until one day, I shut it down while it was updating. Now, on bootup, it will take me to the login screen and then basically freezes. The keyboard and mouse do not work and I cannot login to any profile. I tried a clean reinstall, but it only finds the preferences I have and sends me right back to the login screen.

Big mistake The screen went black.I can force a shutdown, login and I get the same black screen. I tried hooking up an external monitor and the monitor showed no input so I'm guessing my laptop doesn't have that capability with Fedora.This is my main computer.

Jan 1, 2011I've made a Live CD of version 10.04 on a machine running 10.04 (amd64). The disk boots fine on a 2nd machine but does not boot on the machine that created it. The CD/DVD is new and works for other things so I don't think it is this. The Live CD gets to the ISOLINUX screen but instead of "Loading" the screen goes blank and the system shuts down. I've tried everything I can think of (the disk works fine on another machine).

Feb 14, 2011I currently run kernel 2.6.34.7-66.fc13.i686 (sort of). When I select from the Gnome menu System -> Shutdown and select Shutdown from the dialog, my system only logs out, presenting me with the greeting screen. While this is a minor problem and I rarely shutdown my machine, it is mildly disconcerting.I have dropped back to 2.6.34.7-63.fc13.i686 and that shutdowns properly using this method. (Also, 2.6.34.7-61.fc13.i686 works properly). I can imagine that it might close some security issue in which an unauthorized user is able to halt the entire machine. Especially if this is something that will continue in future releases of the kernel.

Jul 21, 2011I've just installed F15 KDE Edition, and as the title tells, I need to keep pressing F2 and/or Enter to make the system go through the boot up process, otherwise it freezes as long as i keep it without my interference !! and then it takes relatively long time to start the GUI, and when I switch to the console (using ALT + CTRL + F3 for example) and try to write the login or the password, there seem to be some 'bouncing' effect, that if I'm to write the login 'root', I get something like 'rrooott' ... however, this doesn't happen in the GUI .....
I have a multiboot system, with Windows7 and Linux Mint (based on ubuntu 10.4) installed along side. While Windows7 doesn't have any problem with my hardware, Linux mint has also some issues that cause the performance of media players to degrade (sound and video tearing) and cause repeated freezes to some applications (a game actually, 'wesnoth') until I press a key or move the mouse.
I have AMD Athlon 7750 dual core 2.7 GHz system, with 3GB DDR2 800 Ram, and embedded ATI Radeon HD 3200 with about 512 shared memory.
one more thing, when I booted off the live image to run the install program, I booted into the video failsafe mode (not sure of the exact name, but I think you got it, no mode setting) and passed the option 'noapic', so I suppose this options are still passed whenever I boot mysystem, as I get the text version of the progress bar during startup, rather then the graphical fedora logo ( i.e no mode setting) ..
Fedora :: System Hangs Due To Kernel Error On Shutdown
Feb 20, 2010I have just made a clean installation of FC12. The only change I have made for now is to disable the NetworkManager and set a static ip address. My problem is that when I click "shutdown" it doesn't complete the shutdown and hangs due to some kind of kernel error. Then I have to use the power-switch to shut it down. It doesn't happen every time, but it happens often (every 3rd shutdown or so).

May 1, 2010I have machine which I am using a server for all my office activities. We have fedora (11.0) installed in that system. When even power goes out system is getting shut-down abruptly. We have UPS for this system and some times UPS also runs out of power. Do we have any software, which monitors battery power and shutdown the system gracefully, when system knows that power is running out. I am using desktop machine, not a laptop. So I may some hardware like battery which runs fot sometime, even though there is no power. Then there will software which monitors and shut down the system gracfully.

Jun 29, 2009I find system sounds distracting, so having recently installed F11 I've turned the sound theme to 'no sounds', which is fine. However, when I boot my system and get the GDM login screen, every time the password text input box gets focus, it emits a *really* loud low beep. I have no idea where to begin looking to customise the settings for GDM to disable all sounds.

Sep 13, 2010Strange problems and I don't know if they are related. This is Ubuntu 10.4 32 bit on a Toshiba Qosmio x505-q875 laptop dual boot with Winblows 7. One drive bay is a 64GB SSD with windows, my root, usr, and swap partitions on it. The other is a 1TB drive with the home partition.
First Problem: After the Grub menu disappears (defaulting to Ubuntu) about 25% of the time nothing happens. No harddrive light blinking, no cursor, nothing. Everything just stops. I have to use the power button to reset it. Happens several times in a row occasionally. I've never had this happen with Windows.
Second Problem: Sometimes Ubuntu doesn't see the sound card at all. The speaker icon is grehyed out and when I go into sound preferences, it doesn't list any sound device at all. Rebooting fixes it. This happens maybe half the time.
Last Problem: This one happens when the sound doesn't work. When i go to shut down the system, the hibernate and suspend options are not in the shutdown menu, and when I do shut down, it only logs me off. Even at the log on screen, if I tell the system to shut down again, nothing happens. I can log back on it that means anything, but shutting down again has the same effect.
Fedora :: Sound System In F12 Disappointing
Feb 8, 2010I have recently updated my Laptop from Fedora (core) 5 to Fedora 12 hoping to have a much better operating system in the sense that things work more easily, are more stable, are easy to maintain etc. In nearly every respect I am positively surprised by Fedora 12 (ease of installation, hardware managing, stability, power operations, ...), but I am disappointed how the sound is handled in Fedora 12.
Although some things are easier now (you can just plug in headsets without rebooting the laptop), other things are just handled more or less as it has been in the old version 5 of Fedora:
- When using skype, I sometimes have sound problems (don't hear anything). I need to see what program uses the sound port by scanning through the output of lsof /dev/snd or so, with the need to e.g. shut down firefox, so skype can take over the port.
- This lists also pulseaudio, no idea what this is. Can I kill it? What is this used for?
- Also sometimes, the input source control (in the mixer) is reset to zero by some program, and I have to open the mixer and set it back to maximum
- And when using mplayer, it always adjusts the output source control to maximum, although I have reduced it before.
I really hoped that the sound managing would be much better in Fedora 12, but it is not. Maybe there are ways to improve the sound managing? Or a code that can be updated? Or a different code that just lets you use all the sound-producing applications like in Windows, where you can adjust the volume of multiple sound-producing applications (firefox, skype, mplayer, ...)?

May 3, 2010This is a really weird issue. I'm using 10.04 and on occasion when I boot into Ubuntu the sound doesn't work along with losing the ability to shutdown via the menu. When I click shutdown it just logs out. I need to shut down my PC by using the terminal.
It's strange because the sound and shutdown work as expected most of the time. The issue is seemingly random.

I added in etc/modprobe.conf The list of sound devices, putting my D66 card as device 3, Rebooted and cat /proc/asound/cards showed all fore devices in the correct order. I got audio through one of the apps , and started to try and get another ,wsjt, to function.

Fedora Installation :: Set Initial System Sound Volume In F12?
Dec 21, 2009I'm using 32bit F12 on my Sony laptop. Each time the system is booted, the sound volume is 100%. Then I log in and set the volume to a much lower level. But when a media application, such as mplayer, is started, the volume is recovered to 100%. The 64bit F12 on a PC has the same sound problem

I have this problem only when the login screen appears and after I clicked on my account's icon to write my password and login. I tried to disable it (alert sound) from 'sound' in 'system settings' by muting it or even changing the sound to the other options and nothing happened. Then I search for this problem and found a solution that remove the module by executing

Fedora :: Mouse Flash While Vlc Is In Full Screen And Immediately Afterward Sound Gone
Nov 9, 2009What happens is that the sound will disappear, either without any apparent reason, otherwise when I move the mouse, or pause vlc, or open up another application, in most cases FF. I have also seen the mouse flash while vlc is in fullscreen, and immediately afterward the sound is gone. When the sound disappears, the gnome-volume-control will disappear and reappear on the top taskbar. Also there will be no device under the hardware and input tab of the sound preferences when the sound disappears.
Killing and restarting the pulseaudio daemon from the cli will return the appropriate choices under sound preferences hardware/input tabs, as well as the audio. This could happen a couple of times in the period of an hour. Usually restarting vlc will solve the problem, or restarting the pulseaudio daemon. Another thing I have noticed is that I will occassionally have to kill the vlc process through the system monitor or cli, as closing vlc will not remove it from the taskbar. I have tried the fix shown here, to no avail. Using kernel 2.6.30.9-96.fc11.x86_64 on a hp dv3-2154ca.

I managed to do many tweaks I wanted to, in no small part thanks to this forum, but here's one that eludes me and my google-fu.
I'd like to customize the login screen (if I grokked correctly, that's gdm). I already saw how to change the background or how to enable automatic login, but what I'd like to do is this :
1. Disable that rather annoying "pong" sound when I select a user,
2. Set a default desktop environment. Gnome seems to be the default environment selected in the drop-down menu, but me, I'd like for it to be XFCE.
Fedora Hardware :: Xfi Titanium Sound - Use 5.1 Analog Audio System
Jan 26, 2011I installed a fresh copy of Fedora 14 a few days ago. The default drivers for this device worked OK but I read on some forums that OSSV4 had improved performance/capabilities. I came across this thread on the forums which I followed. (incloded removing pulse audio) Since then I have visited almost every forum/site I can find to try to resolve my issue. I have reinstalled pulseaudio and editied almost all of the conf files I could find relating to the xfi cards.
I was worried that I may have changed a config file that I shouldn't have. I removed all of the pulse audio apps using: su -c "yum remove alsa-plugins-pulseaudio pulseaudio padevchooser pavumeter paprefs pavucontrol" and also removed the config backups so that on a new install they would be replaced. I will post any information needed to resolve this issue, my goal is preferably not to use pulseaudio and successfully be able to use my 5.1 analog audio system I am sure that the system is able to see the card, but loading the driver / sound utilities is not working.
Ubuntu Installation :: Shutdown - Restart Failure - No Sound And Unable To Mount After Upgrade
Jul 22, 2010I am using Ubuntu 10.04 on a dual-boot system with Windows 7. Yesterday I upgraded from 2.6.32-23 to 2.6.32-24. After that, pressing the shutdown button and selecting shutdown or restart (whether on the login page or after I've logged in) will only bring me back to the login page. I can shutdown or restart if I do sudo shutdown now, but I'd prefer to use the GUI. Also, there is no sound now (not a big deal, but still not good). And I can't access my storage partition (not the windows7 partition, but a third ntfs partition with data on it). I get the error message that I am unauthorized to mount. I have the only account on this computer, so I should be authorized. This one is a HUGE problem for me, because I need to be able to access my data for work. None of these were problems before the upgrade.
Oh yeah, and quickstart is not enabled. Also, if I go to Power Management, and try to alter what to do when Power Button is pressed, my only option is Ask Me. I know these have been problems/solutions to the shutdown/restart problem in the past.
