OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Re-load Grub Following Windows 7 SP1 Upgrade On Dual-Boot?

Apr 28, 2011

A few days ago I went to perform the Service Pack 1 Upgrade for Win 7. This crashed out with an error. On researching the problem I found a solution to fix the problem by marking the Windows partition as active. I did this (via Computer Mgmt -> Disk Mgmt). This allowed the SP1 upgrade to work, however on reboot I got an error BOOTMGR missing. This I rather rashly resolved by using the Windows 7 install DVD in Recovery mode to reinstall the Windows Boot manager via bootrec /Fixboot I thought I would then be able to use the Opensuse 11.2 install disk to fix grub.

I use the Opensuse install disk and select Repair system -> Expert Mode -> Install New Boot Loader then select Other -> Reread Configuration from Disk. This adds Win 7 back into the grub menu. I then select OK and get the message "the bootloader was installed successfully". The problem then comes when I click my way through OK and Next to finish the install. At the end of the process I get the message "An error occurred during the installation" and I'm no further forward.

FYI the PC has a single SATA disk installed partitioned as follows:

dev/sda1 100Mb Win System Parkition
dev/sda2 Windows NTFS
dev/sda3 Windows FAT

OpenSUSE Hardware :: GRUB To Dual Boot 11.2 And Windows XP But Hangs On Boot

Apr 20, 2010

HW config is: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition, MSI 785GTM-E45, 2X 1Gb Kingston HyperX PC2-8500. I have set up GRUB to dualboot openSUSE 11.2 and WindowsXP. Initially i had set up system with defaults: CPU@2600MHz (200X13) and therefore RAM@800MHz. Both openSUSE 11.2 and WindowsXP worked just fine. Memtest86 found no problems.

But after a while i decided to change this setup to: CPU@2500MHz (250X10) and therefore RAM@1000MHz, as it promised better overall performance. And now Windows still boots and works better then before. Memtest86 still can't find any problem. But openSUSE 11.2 hangs at boot. I've suspected cpufreq governor, but changing from Ondemand to Conservative in /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq doesn't help.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Upgrade - With Image #22 And Unable To Boot Windows

May 17, 2010

I recently performed a reinstall of ubuntu after mucking up my partitions, and I am running it dual booted with windows 7.

I recently performed a grub-pc update, but I didn't know what it was asking me to do during the process itself of updating the process.

It asked me at one point where to install grub, and I selected all my partitions because it suggested that if I didn't know. I think that may have damaged my windows section, which was also selection.

I've attached the output for:

Code:

Problem symptoms:

1) Weird upgrade error in apt-get
2) Unable to boot windows 7
3) Unable to activate proprietary drivers
4) Perpetually being reminded to restart

OpenSUSE Install :: Dual Boot On A Mac - Can't Load The System

Mar 20, 2011

I'm trying to install OpenSUSE 11.4 (64bit with the server options included) on my Mac (Core 2 Duo 2.0 Ghz with 2 GB memory). So I have sda2 the OSX, sda1 swap, sda3 is the bootcamp (windows), sda4 (ext4) and sda5(ext5). I installed rEFIt 0.14 first, then I reboot with DVD on. The installation setup resized the Windows partition from Bootcamp, and create 3 other partitions (the sda1,4 and 5). At the installation I choos MBR enable and "/" as home enable.

At the end of the installation I have the error about MBR, that can't mount, or create the mount point? I'll double check the exact message. Anyway, when I try to load OpenSUSE, is not working: can not load the system. I tried to find on the installation menu a repair (I thought that I can find an utility to fix the MBR). I don't want to choose other distribution, because I used SuSE before, and I really like it, and of course this way I can learn more about troubleshooting a Linux installation on different environment

General :: Cannot Install Grub, unable To Boot Windows 7?

May 31, 2010

Two days ago i turned on my pc and suddenly there was a message:"Minimal Bash-like line editing is supported. For the first word,TAB lists possible command completions.Anywhere else TAB lists the possible completions of a device/filename.ESC any time exists...

When i googled this message it came out that this has got to do with linux (i have never used linux and i formated my disc once or twice since i bought it so i found it very strange that this problem is related to linux).Anyway,i found out that grub is the problem and that it isnt a big deal to solve it.I downloaded Ubuntu, booted it from the cd and followed the instructions...I typed in grub (in the terminal) and it told me to download it so i typed in "get-apt grub install" or something like that and it all went well,i was now in the grub directory. Then i typed " find /boot/grub/stage1" and it told me that the file was not found.

I have tried everything,i have downloaded the super rescue cd the fix the problem but i have still the same problem.

Ubuntu :: New Dual-boot But Cannot Load Windows7(grub)?

Apr 12, 2011

Finally made the switch over to ubuntu, but I needed to keep my windows7 for several reasons. Let just start by saying I have two hard drives, a 200gig(which holds my windows7 partition) and a 500gig(has a 100gig partition which has ubuntu on it). After finally getting 10.04 to install on the 100gig partition and everything running right, I tried to load up windows7 and got an error.

Something along to lines of "the partition does not exist". I believe I messed up on the last step on the install, as I might of just been careless. I remember reading somewhere that if using multiple hard drives grub may get messed up in one way or another. IS there a way to fix this and make grub realize that window7 is on another partition, or am I out of luck?edit: Id like to add that grub is recognizing windows7, it just will not load off the other partition(I think)

OpenSUSE Install :: Where Is Grub Loaded On Dual-boot System

Jan 24, 2010

I am currently rebuilding a couple laptops and a desktop to dual boot Windows and Suse 11.2. Windows is installed on partition 1. On the laptops, the build goes fine and dual boot with grub is OK. No issues. But on the desktop, the exact same build (after all the on-line updates, etc) fails with "Operating system not found" on the final (and first) boot. It seems that the Suse 11.2 build is somehow resetting the active partition and the boot does not see grub or Windows. When I reset partition #1 back to "active, only Windows loads. So I guess I need to fix this by reinstalling grub. Or use the Windows boot loader.

(1) Where is grub located on my system?

(2) What partiton is the Linux master Boot record If I wanted to use the Windows boot loader and do the following command to grab the 512 bytes I need:

dd if=/dev/sna? of=grub.bin bs=512 count=1

My partition layout is below. This is output from gdisk.exe in DOS7. It's an 80gig drive.

1 = Windows-7
2 = /boot
3 = swap

I saw a good quick fix for grub after win 7 updates over here

My question is, after WIN 7 sp1 it seems every update win 7 does borks grub and resets the system to boot from the Win 7 boot partition, Is there a way to prevent this or is it going to be a boot from CD and repair after every update?

Cause I know M$ isn't going to want to fix it as they don't like sharing systems.

I'm running

OpenSUSE Install :: Dual-boot Installation Of 11.3 With Windows 7?

Sep 29, 2010

Yesterday (Sept. 28) I managed to install openSuSE 11.3 on my Toshiba Satellite Pro C650 laptop, side-by-side with Windows 7 which was pre-installed. In brief I'd like to report the problems I had encountered up to yesterday.

1. Upon inserting the DVD and after the start of the installation the system would take me to non-GUI (Text) Mode and would finally respond with the message: "No repository found."

2. After that I tried to install openSuSE 11.2 and 11.1. There, although the installation went through smoothly, I had to deal with a new problem; when I selected to boot Windows 7 from the grub menu the system responded with the message:

rootnoverify (hd0,1)
chainload +1
BOOTMGR is missing

Upon booting the computer from the DVD with the Linux OS and before I hit ENTER I changed the Kernel by hitting F5 (or whatever key corresponds to Kernel at the bottom of screen) to "Failsafe mode". That did the job. The installation started and ended smoothly. Oh! one other thing I did is to edit the preselected disk partition and delete the swap partition since the disk has to have four and not five partitions. After that, I became root and edited "/boot/grub/menu.lst" file to correct the "(hd0,1)" for the Windows 1 to "(hd0,0)" since it is the first OS.
