I am trying to Dual-boot Windows & and OpenSUSE 11.4, and have run into walls all over the place. Here is what I did:
1. Windows 7 was already installed. (Don't like it, freezes all the time)
2. Installed OpenSUSE using default partition options.
3. Booted into OpenSUSE with no problem
4. Tried booting into Windows, no joy.
5. Got that figured out, now I can get into Windows.
6. GRUB is gone, so now I can't get back into OpenSUSE.
I would like to try to reinstall a barebones xp on a compac laptop as a dual boot with 11.1. I repartitioned using gparted so I now have 20 Gb free. Here (I hope) is the output of fdisk -lu [URL] I spent a lot of time setting up opensuse and don't want to lose the settings, etc. Should I repartition with the 20G space "in front" of the linux partitions? Can I back up the linux settings so I can reinstall them if I lose everything? Is there a sort of windows emulator (wine?) that will run programs that won't run on opensuse, like netflix, tax prep software, etc? Too many questions I know but I would like a fairly simple foolproof fix if possible.

I had to run a Windows 7 Startup Repair, which apparently reset the Windows boot loader, so now I am not getting Grub. How do I reinstall or reactivate the Grub boot loader? I am assuming I have to use the installation DVD?
View 6 Replies View RelatedEverything was working fine with dual boot sda/osuse 11.2 and sdb/kubuntu. Decided to install new 11.3. Lost dual boot, can now only boot to 11.3, sort expected that. I see the root and home partitions in Dolphin but can't mount or open them? Would like to access the files copy to Osuse. Rite clik get me "error permission denied" I can reinstall Kubunt and it will set up my boot loader correctly with grub2, but is their a better quicker way? Why does Osuse still use the legacy grub?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI had a dual boot windows xp / ubuntu system. I needed to put more disk space on my system so I had the win xp system disk cloned. After doing that my ubuntu installation no longer appears.
The Ubuntu system was and is on a separate hard drive. So I am fairly sure that it is intact.
Is there someway I can restore the boot information?
I resized my windows c drive to make another drive which also has Open SUSE 11.4 dual booting which was working fine.
After reboot I get missing operating system so I boot the live Opensuse DVD and the windows and Linux is still there so I tried the boot configure tool in YAST but get the error because of partitioning the boot loader cannot be installed properly

I am currently rebuilding a couple laptops and a desktop to dual boot Windows and Suse 11.2. Windows is installed on partition 1. On the laptops, the build goes fine and dual boot with grub is OK. No issues. But on the desktop, the exact same build (after all the on-line updates, etc) fails with "Operating system not found" on the final (and first) boot. It seems that the Suse 11.2 build is somehow resetting the active partition and the boot does not see grub or Windows. When I reset partition #1 back to "active, only Windows loads. So I guess I need to fix this by reinstalling grub. Or use the Windows boot loader.
(1) Where is grub located on my system?
(2) What partiton is the Linux master Boot record If I wanted to use the Windows boot loader and do the following command to grab the 512 bytes I need:
dd if=/dev/sna? of=grub.bin bs=512 count=1
My partition layout is below. This is output from gdisk.exe in DOS7. It's an 80gig drive.

My question is, after WIN 7 sp1 it seems every update win 7 does borks grub and resets the system to boot from the Win 7 boot partition, Is there a way to prevent this or is it going to be a boot from CD and repair after every update?
Cause I know M$ isn't going to want to fix it as they don't like sharing systems.

View 9 Replies View RelatedA few days ago I went to perform the Service Pack 1 Upgrade for Win 7. This crashed out with an error. On researching the problem I found a solution to fix the problem by marking the Windows partition as active. I did this (via Computer Mgmt -> Disk Mgmt). This allowed the SP1 upgrade to work, however on reboot I got an error BOOTMGR missing. This I rather rashly resolved by using the Windows 7 install DVD in Recovery mode to reinstall the Windows Boot manager via bootrec /Fixboot I thought I would then be able to use the Opensuse 11.2 install disk to fix grub.
I use the Opensuse install disk and select Repair system -> Expert Mode -> Install New Boot Loader then select Other -> Reread Configuration from Disk. This adds Win 7 back into the grub menu. I then select OK and get the message "the bootloader was installed successfully". The problem then comes when I click my way through OK and Next to finish the install. At the end of the process I get the message "An error occurred during the installation" and I'm no further forward.
FYI the PC has a single SATA disk installed partitioned as follows:
dev/sda1 100Mb Win System Parkition
dev/sda2 Windows NTFS
dev/sda3 Windows FAT

I was using open suse with win 7 in a PC with dual boot (grub). But my Hard Drive has 170GB of free space (do not ask why I left this empty space ). Onde day I needed to use this free space and formated it using the windows. It worked fine, but when I reestarted the notebook my grub did not opened! To solve the problems I tried to recovered it but with no success, so I found a tutorial to reinstall the grub, It worked partially, because my open suse partition was not detected and I can't access it.

Reinstalling grub shouldn't be tough, right, especially with clear instructions? Anyway, I can't get anywhere with the official instructions here: [URL]. The first issue is that the current live CD has no program "grub" in terminal. I dug up an old live cd, but I couldn't get anything with the directions:
Find where Grub is. If this gives a few different answers then you will need to find the correct one, perhaps by trial-and-error.
find /boot/grub/stage1
That command didn't find anything, nor did some similar commands found on google.
So I'm really at a loss. What should I do?
-Can I install Grub 2 on my MBR? Will that work with 9.04?
-Can I access my 9.04 install, copy files to Windows, and then just format the partition and clean install 10.04?
Due to lack of concentration, I inadvertantly ran PClinux(2009-2)'s "install.sh" while I was in openSuse 11.1. This file says:

I soon found out that Suse 11.1 would no longer boot from boot.ini (using bootpart) because the boot process now brings up PCLOS (in /dev/sda6) rather than Suse 11.1 sitting in /dev/sda5. No problem, I thought, I'll boot from the Suse install DVD, use repair, and away I go. Wrong. After grinding, it started mentioning about generating something for sda13, which is my last partition. NTFS! So I bailed before it got too far. I even tried "rescue" option on the DVD, command prompt, and grub commands to reinstall via "setup.
Then I tried to use Super Grub Disk (.97xx) to reinstall the PBR, stage 1 and stage 2 loaders. Didn't change a thing. So then I used Grub4DOS and got into my Suse 11.1 installation using this in its menu.lst:

Worked fine, and is now my (only) method of booting to 11.1. So obviously it's bypassing stage 1 and 2 files, using it's native Grub4DOS code. But then I tried Yast-Bootloader to reinstall Grub's files. No difference. Then I used the advanced part to "write bootloader code to disk" No difference. Even tried "propose a new boot scheme" (or whatnot) no difference. After looking at all this, I've come to the conclusion that the PBR code in sda5 is scraunched, and/or stage 1 code (although it's still the original date), or stage 2 (which definitely had a new timestamp of when I committed the fatal error by executing PCLOS's "install.sh".
So my question is this: How do I do a good COMPLETE re-install of Suse's version of the grub files? Because, for sure, grub commands like "setup --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 (hd0,5), and variations thereof, certainly aren't doing it? My reasoning is that I should make sure that all the boot files get restored/confirmed as "originally installed by Suse".
I have installed Windows Server 2003 after CentOS. Then GRUB boot loader lost. Is there a way I can install GRUB boot loader from Windows?
View 2 Replies View RelatedHW config is: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition, MSI 785GTM-E45, 2X 1Gb Kingston HyperX PC2-8500. I have set up GRUB to dualboot openSUSE 11.2 and WindowsXP. Initially i had set up system with defaults: CPU@2600MHz (200X13) and therefore RAM@800MHz. Both openSUSE 11.2 and WindowsXP worked just fine. Memtest86 found no problems.
But after a while i decided to change this setup to: CPU@2500MHz (250X10) and therefore RAM@1000MHz, as it promised better overall performance. And now Windows still boots and works better then before. Memtest86 still can't find any problem. But openSUSE 11.2 hangs at boot. I've suspected cpufreq governor, but changing from Ondemand to Conservative in /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq doesn't help.
I lost grub on installing window7 , used caf,s way Re-Install Grub Quickly with Parted Magic - openSUSE Forums to install but on typing find /boot/grub/menu.lst it does on find menu.lst however i could see the file by mounting the right drive. I dont want to fresh install suse to get grub

View 11 Replies View RelatedOn my Desktop I am experiencing a very weird behavior. First of all, I would like to mention that I am posting from the very same machine...just under Windows (which tends me to roll our hardware issues).
Next, a short history I installed 11.2 on my machine when it came out last year. I upgraded my hardware (new mainboard, cpu, ...) without reinstalling. Everything went fine I upgraded to KDE 4.4...still everything ok I did a system upgrade to 11.3 final using zypper And there it starts. After the upgrade, the first boot didnt work as expected (the system just hang). So I just did a restart and 11.3 was up and running. Now, since last week, I cannot boot my system at all. The screen just shows me the boot-splash but the progress bar isnt moving a thing. So I started with the option splash=verbose which did not show me a single line of output. The system just hangs right after the GRUB selection occured. So I decided to download 11.3, burn it to a disc and reinstall it. Well...this doesnt work either At least it shows me some lines of output, which look fine, but some lines after starting KDM the screen goes black and thats it. The only way I got something was when I started the installation in Textmode. I was able to log in but I dont know what to do then. I ran yast2 but it didnt look like I could install the system that way.It would be nice to get it running with my home-partition still in place.
I added an entry to grub's menu.lst and reran grub (grub-install hd0) and now my background is gone and the entries just show up like on a normal console.
I searched the forums and I couldn't find anything. Does anybody know why this happened and how to fix it?
I have not changed anything in menu.lst except for adding the new OS.
Im currently not an linux expert so I turn to this forum after several attempts to fix my issue with grub.
I had a dualboot single HD with both win7 and win8.1 when I decided to install debian wheezy from usb.
I deleted the win7 partition and installed debian there. The partition scheme is separate /home
After reboot I automatically get into the "Grub rescue mode" and now I´m stuck.
I tried the commands:
set prefix=(hd0,msdosX)/boot/grub/
Insmod normal
I have msdos1, msdos3, msdos5 and msdos6 but nothing is listing anything from the grub rescue mode.
I get the "UNKNOWN FILE SYSTEM" error and cant get past that.
I also tried booting into rescue mode from usb iso install but nothing happens when choosing to repair GRUB.
The listed devices in rescue mode are:
/dev/sda1
/dev/sda2
/dev/sda3
/dev/sda5
/dev/sda6
debian uses sdb 1-2 and sdb1 is the only option to Reinstall GRUB on but it gives me "Unable to install GRUB in /dev/sdb1 This is a fatal error" message

I'm having serious troubles to install ubuntu-10.04.1. My raid is an hardware raid with intel chipset. Note that win7 is already installed and working with my raid. I made some space from windows, to install Ubuntu (40gb). First, I run the installer, everything seems to be fine. I choose to install Ubuntu were there is the most space free (sorry, I'm not sure about the real terms used there).
Then my partition with the vista loader appears. So the installer can see my raid, and should work fine (everything is detected correctly). But once I'm in the end of the installation (around 95%), a pop-up appears, and tells me that Grub can't install in /dev/sda and it's a fatal error. I can choose an another destination, but it doesn't seems to work.
I just tried to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my windows machine. Unfortunately there was an installation error and now the computer will not boot up in windows anymore (I get grub error 17). I had Ubuntu 7.04 before, but when installing 10.04, I deleted the 7.04 partitions. Is there a way to recover the ability to boot into windows?

The Ubuntu installation went fine but when rebooting a "check disk" appeared and since then my PC keeps booting directly on Windows. I have pc containing 80 GB Hard Disc with 1 GB RAM. I am using 60 GB for windows and 20 Gb for Fedora 12. Recently i formatted the pc and reinstalled both. I installed windows 7 instead of Windows XP i am using earlier. Now i do not like windows 7. My system became very slow. perhaps as my pc is five years old and motherbord configuration may not be matching. Now i want to revert to windows XP. I do not know any method by which i can retain fedora 12 and change from windows 7 to XP. Earlier i formatted complete hard disc and installed fedora 12 (myself) after windows 7 (by professional). but now i do not want to reinstall fedora 12. It will lose all upgradation and installed packages.
