View 9 RepliesA few days ago I went to perform the Service Pack 1 Upgrade for Win 7. This crashed out with an error. On researching the problem I found a solution to fix the problem by marking the Windows partition as active. I did this (via Computer Mgmt -> Disk Mgmt). This allowed the SP1 upgrade to work, however on reboot I got an error BOOTMGR missing. This I rather rashly resolved by using the Windows 7 install DVD in Recovery mode to reinstall the Windows Boot manager via bootrec /Fixboot I thought I would then be able to use the Opensuse 11.2 install disk to fix grub.
I use the Opensuse install disk and select Repair system -> Expert Mode -> Install New Boot Loader then select Other -> Reread Configuration from Disk. This adds Win 7 back into the grub menu. I then select OK and get the message "the bootloader was installed successfully". The problem then comes when I click my way through OK and Next to finish the install. At the end of the process I get the message "An error occurred during the installation" and I'm no further forward.
FYI the PC has a single SATA disk installed partitioned as follows:
dev/sda1 100Mb Win System Parkition
dev/sda2 Windows NTFS
dev/sda3 Windows FAT

I've just tried to upgrade my Fedora 9 (x86_64) installation to Fedora 10 using the installation DVD. The upgrade seemed to proceed very smoothly, no errors ,nor warnings, it just seemed that it is upgrading grub (yes, I chose to upgrade grub as well) and all the packages (it took about 20 minutes). However, after the upgrade was over, it asked me to reboot my computer, so that's what I did, I took out the DVD and waited for GRUB to load.
It loaded just fine, but I was quite surprised when there was no option to boot Fedora 10 in the list. Ok, so I booted into Fedora 9 which went fine, the layout changed to the new one and some programs don't run. When I looked into /lib/modules I couldn't see any fc10 kernel installed. So the question is what happened and what should I do, so that it upgrades to fc10?
I have just installed Ubuntu, now when logging into my laptop i am able to sucsessfully load ubuntu but i am unable to load the original OS (windows 7).
The grub 1.9 bootloader gives me the option
When selecting this option it goes to a black screen with a - in the top left of the screen then the grub screen re-appears

i have installed debian but during installation my installed windows 10 was not found by the grubloader. i have installed windows 10 on my ssd and the debian on my hdd. nevertheless i installed the grub loader on the master boot record, because it said i could still configure it so it can boot both the windows and the debian.The debian installation is running fine. But i now want to boot the windows too. The problem is i have never worked with the grub loader yet and i am little scared that i will do something wrong.How can i get grub to load my windows ?

Installed Lucid as a dual boot on Dell Dimension2400. Upgrade Mgr gave me 501 upgrades to install, which Upgrade Mgr did, after which It locks up on login screen. Now when I point a browser to my site the page just hangs as if it is trying to load it but I never get an error nor does it load the page. I have tried to restart apache using /etc/init.d/apache2 restart in which I receive an fail error:

I recently performed a reinstall of ubuntu after mucking up my partitions, and I am running it dual booted with windows 7.
I recently performed a grub-pc update, but I didn't know what it was asking me to do during the process itself of updating the process.
It asked me at one point where to install grub, and I selected all my partitions because it suggested that if I didn't know. I think that may have damaged my windows section, which was also selection.

I'm at my wit's end with Windows this morning. I upgraded to Lucid a few days ago. Everything went very smoothly. Then I spent the greater part of Friday and Saturday "upgrading" to Windows 7 from Vista. I chose the "update" option which was only supposed to update to 7 rather than overwrite the entire HD. Now, GRUB doesn't load and I don't see my Linux partition. HOWEVER, it appears as though the partitions are still there! When I look in Winbloze at the HDs, it shows the Windoze HD as the partition size I made it when installing Ubuntu.
Any ideas on how to recover the awesomeness that is Ubuntu from this situation? Or do I need to install it fresh?

There was also a problem with Windows, but that's another thing. Now I had not upgraded Ubuntu for a long time. I think I still had Ubuntu 8.9 . So I wanted to upgrade and let Ubuntu do it automatically, it showed the upgrade to 9.4. So let it upgrade, but it asked if it had to change menu.lst, but since I had menu.lst modified in the right way, I choose the option to keep the already installed version. But it just kept asking the same question, so 4 or 5 times and a few hours later I choose the option to change it to the default package version. Then it didn't ask this anymore, but it hung at a later stage.
So I waited several hours longer, but it didn't proceed anymore, so I had to shut it down.It shut down OK, but then when I restarted, what I described above happened.Now I have another problem, my disk reader (CD/DVD) doesn't work either, so I cannot simply use a LiveCD.
I had Fedora 7 and Windows Vista dual booting on my computer. I just installed Fedora 10. When the live CD asked me where to install it, I chose "Remove all Linux Partitions and create default layout" The installation went perfectly, but now when reboot my computer, it boots directly into Fedora; GRUB does not load to ask me which OS I want to load. What do I need to do to make GRUB load again upon booting?
I have a Onetouch 4 mini 160GB I bought a year ago. I t used to work fine but all of a sudden it started to become a problem device. My home pc has two operating systems on it: Windows 7 and ubuntu 10.04 lucid. the drive often fails to load on both systems. Sometimes it's recognized, but the reads are very slow and opening a folder on the drive takes around 120 seconds. Itried reformatting the whole drive, chicking it with chkdsk but it didn't help. Now I have around 70 GB of data on the drive. On my office pc I don't have such a problem and the drive works fine.
My home pc has an Asus P5B motherboard and intel core 2 duo cpu. I tried unplugging other usb devices, plugging in the extra power cord (data + data/power) and it didn't help. The drive also makes beeping sounds when I try to browes the files on it. I'm sure thid is not OS related as both Windows and Linux have the same issue. I was having problems with a video driver for ubuntu 10.10 64 bit so decided to try and down grade to 32 bit.I kind of carelessly just deleted the ubuntu partition with Gparted thinking that worse case scenario I would still have access to windows 7, since I was running a dual boot. This was a terrible idea and I ran into a bunch of problems. I managed to reinstall ubuntu and it runs fine. However when I try to load windows 7 it justs loops back to the grub screen. Trying to avoid reinstalling everything to get a proper boot

Seem to have knocked out GRUB as normal loading screen does not appear anymore.
Worse, I think I accidently installed grub to something labelled SDC5.
Cannot get anything except the "grub rescue" prompt. I'm not sure if using the LiveCD (9.10) can help. Have tried a few prompts from other threads but just ended up with mud splattered all over the place. I'm gathering I need to load grub, but can I do it using any grub rescue commands?
I have finally installed ubuntu 10.4 alongside windows 7.However, the grub doesn't show windows 7 so I can't boot into it.
Attached is a screenshot of "gparted". Windows 7 is installed on "sda2" and Ubuntu is on "sda6". How do I edit the grub to be able to load into windows 7?
And I faced another problem after installation. The pc kept freezing, I couldn't enter ubuntu nor use the live version on my usb stick. It kept freezing.
EDIT: I restarted and it froze again. I had to restart at least times before it allowed me into ubuntu. I'm wondering if it's a hard-disk issue since it's giving me a hard disk error whenever I login. Even though I've been running windows 7 for the past 9 months without any problem.

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy current situation is I have two physical hard disks, one with Windows 7 (sda) and another where I recently installed Ubuntu 9.1 (sdb). At this time there were no issues.
Now after getting used to 9.1 I selected to upgrade to 10.04 from the update manager. During this install I was told I needed to upgrade GRUB which I understand is the bootloader and was told to choose where to install it.Now at this time I had no knowledge of drive naming conventions in Linux and there was no option to cancel the upgrade to look for help, so instead I followed the advice in the help box to simply select every device listed
The result was a fully working Ubuntu installation but at the cost of an unbootable Windows 7.Windows is showing on the GRUB menu but selecting it gives only a blank screen with a flashing cursor and no ability to do anything besides ctrl-alt-delete.
After a few hours of googling solutions including downgrading GRUB, there was no change and it seems that I actually have a version of GRUB on both drives. The one on the windows drive (sda) is the default loaded GRUB that shows Windows 7 but cannot boot it. The second GRUB install on the Ubuntu drive (sdb) is the one I am able to configure through Ubuntu but does not list Windows 7 on its boot list even after using "sudo update-grub"

I have recently put Ubuntu on a friend's computer. I can access the windows partition and everything through Ubuntu. When I go to restart, his Windows XP Media Center Edition is in the boot loader's list but when I go to boot into it all I get is a black screen with a flash _ at the top left. It then just continues to sit there. I was wondering if maybe GRUB was looking in the wrong spot for the OS.
Before I installed Linux he was having problems with Windows XP, which is one reason why I switched him to Ubuntu. For some reason his computer was booting his HP Recovery partition instead of his Windows partition on start up. I was hoping by putting Ubuntu on and using GRUB as a boot loader I would be able to load Windows and Ubuntu side by side as it is on my machine. Windows still doesn't work though I hope people can help me out. I know this isn't really an Ubuntu question but I was unsure where to post boot loader questions.
i have windows xp operating system yesterday i installed ubuntu9.10 dual boot when the grub gets loaded it gives me four options as follows
1) linux......
2) linux......recovery...
3) mem test...
4) windows...
when 1) linux is selected it loads ubuntu properly but. but when i select 4) windows a black page with GRUB written on the top left corner of the page is displayed and will not take any command... the only option i can do is hardboot.
I let a 'friend' use my laptop over the weekend. Now when I turn it on, it loads the BIOS details, then says no active partition, then no OS cannot be found.
It looks like they have deleted the partition with SuSE with the Grub Loader.
I cannot load up SuSE or Windows 7!
Any ideas on how to recover the boot to load Windows 7?
I have tried using the Windows 7 install disc to repair - but it does not recognise that Windows is installed and wants to do a clean install only.
Is it worth trying to reinstall SuSE and hope it detects Windows on the other partition? (I assume it is still there!)
