When I boot up openSUSE 11.2, sometimes it logs me in automatically (which is the setting I have) and sometimes it doesn't. How do I figure out why this is occurring?
View 5 RepliesUsing tips provided in the "Sticky" posts, I have identified my wireless device -- BCM4322 -- and installed the necessary firmware and drivers. The device appears in Network Manager until system reboot, at which time the "ssd" driver module is loaded instead. After each boot I must execute the following commands to remove ssd and load the Broadcom driver:
rmmod ssb
modprobe lib80211
modprobe wl
The Broadcom README file provides directions to load the correct module automatically, but the commands appear to be incompatible with openSUSE 11.4. I'm happy to provide additional detail if needed
at start, knetworkmanager detect wireless network, but doesn't automatically connect - I have to restart it to make it work properly. Instead, it gives that error:

I have used CentOS for a while and have never run into this issue. I searched all over and didn't see a similar issue anywhere, I did an install of CentOS as a server (no GUI) with only the base. Partition is /boot ext3, size of 100MB. The rest of the drive is partitioned as / with ext3. This is being done on a CompactFlash card of 32GB in size. The BIOS sees it as an IDE drive.
When the install completes and the system reboots, the grub stops at the grub> prompt. There is no menu for OS options. If I do the following commands:
grub>root (hd0,0)
grub>kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.el5 root=LABEL=/
grub>initrd /initrd-2.6.18-194.el5.img
grub>boot
We have a MS Windows domain in our school. Some time ago, when I was toying with an earlier version of Opensuse, I joined a box to our domain. I am trying 11.2 now, and my box is box is being named automatically, to what I named the previous box (which is long gone). I guess this is an issue with my Windows domain controller, but I'm not sure what to do about it. The domain controller is running Windows Server 2008 Enterprise.

(Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo M7400 1.6 GHz Centrino, 60GB HDD)Everything seems to work in order, but at certain times, the computer will just log out on its own, without any reason. It gives no error when it does this, so there is no way for me to determine what the cause is. As far as the rest of the OS goes, everything seems perfectly fine, except for the automatic log out the computer does. It just annoys me when the computer logs out by itself sometimes because then I am lost on where I was before, since nothing gets saved when it does this. It makes things really challenging when you are typing something as I am now and then the computer just logs itself out on its own, leaving me with nothing because it does not save anything. And if so, what are the repair steps to this issue??

When I plug in my microSD into my usb adapter I get an error message. 've seen lots of posts about this error message but everything I've read has been way over my head.

One user is selected by default, and the space for the password is in blank. If I do not enter the password immediately, black dots start to appear in the password box as if there was somebody typing a password.

I found out in the option that I have to give: pci=noacpi and the start will go on. My question is, how to do this automatically, I mean modifying before every boot would be annoying.
View 6 Replies View RelatedIf I click on the shutdown bottom (in my lower panel) I get an new window to choose if I really want to shut down or restart or suspend or hibernate. Under that alternatives there is an text that says: "[...] The system will automatically shut down in 60 seconds." Why is the text "60" not running down like a countdown? Can I set another (shorter) time for the automatic shutdown (10 seconds)? If so, where? Or shut I just make another bottom to shut down immediately?

And I am really baffled with a strange NFS problem.I have set up the fstab on the client and exports on the server correctly, because if I manually run # /etc/init.d/nfs startStarting NFS client services: sm-notify doneI can see and use the NFS partition perfectly, there is no problem at all.But nfs cannot successfully start at boot. In yast, I have enabled nfs in "System Services (Runlevel)" at runlevel 3 and 5. So it should run automatically, but I always get the following error message:

I want to automatically run a script once the system has entered runlevel 3 during boot (the script requires network access). I know about /etc/init.d/boot.local but it's my understanding it's triggered in runlevel 1. I also know about init.d scripts but they seem a little daunting.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed dansguardian & squid on 11.2 and things seem to run fine. Squid auto starts but dansguardian does not. I have checked Yast2's runlevel services option and dansguardian is enabled to 'Yes'. But when i check with 'service dansguardian status' it reports 'unused'.If i start dansguardian by hand, things work perfectly fine.I am in a desperate situation since there are 4 other computers which are dependent on this setup to work correctly
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed opensuse 11.2 today on my external hard drive and everything is running great, but I want to see if I can make a modification to the way my computer boots. I share this computer with others and they are not going to be happy to have to wait for the boot menu to start when they turn on the computer in order to choose which OS to run (Especially since if they do not make a choice it auto runs opensuse after a few seconds).
What I would like is if opensuse can be "out of sight, out of mind" and only load when I put in the live cd and then choose to boot from my external...... is it possible to do this?I am not a computer wizard and do not work in the industry.
I just installed openSuse11.3 on my desktop, but when I switch on my pc, windows starts aumatically. I can run openSuse only if I insert installation cd, select BOOT FORM HARD DISK and then Grub appears...I have a problem also with screen resolution, I installed nVidia drivers, but the maximum resolution is 1024X768...

Is there a way to enable this in OpenSUSE?
(My original problem is that I cannot interact with a running X session when loggin in via SSH, since newer GDM versions don't create $HOME/.Xauthority any longer.)
I am currently installing 11.2 on a new 1TB hdd.the opensuse installer does not allow me to create a / partition (ext4) >20GB. Does anyone know why and how I can get around this limitation?

I've recently added a new hard disk and due to mother board controllers this new hard disk is known as sda.Before that my boot partition was /dev/sda3 and know this changed to sdb3.Whenever grub menu appears and I choose opensuse,it can't find /dev/sda3 .It seems that I should edit menu.lst or change boot loader parameter.something like root (hd1,2).But I don't how I can do this with opensuse boot loader.Though I could do this with CentOS easily.
View 7 Replies View RelatedAbove adapter can be installed on v10.2 and 11.3 using ndiswrapper:-
1. Copy the 3 driver files from Windows:- like netwpn111.inf, WPN111.sys & ar5523.bin.
(Be carfeul about the exact names, because they have changed over time).
2. sudo ndiswrapper -i netwpn111.inf
3. sudo ndiswrapper -m
4. sudo modprobe ndiswrapper (the adapter should light up at this point and networks will be detected shortly after - see network manager). (Be careful of paths here - e.g. I had to use /sbin/modprobe - so 'whereis' may be necessary to find these commands).
2nd When I reboot, I need to run the modprobe command again. How do I make the module load automatically on boot? Also (and this is minor), can I bypass the KWallet, keyring thing? it seems silly to enter a password for the keyring and then click another password dialog, when I can just as easily enter the password for the network itself.
I've got a multiboot system with Windozin the first drive and first partition like everyone recommends. I have several distro's and just let them install their bootloaders, but always on hd0 mbr. I installed Debian 5.0.1 this way and it wouldn't boot, so I got SGD to "fix" it, which it said was successful, but all I get is a partition doesn't exist when I try to boot. I put Debian on /dev/sdb3, I loaded Linux Rescueand mounted sdb3 and verified that its menu.lst had the right boot numbers (hd1,2). fdisk even showns /dev/sdb3 as boot as shown by the asterisk under the boot column. Should I do a complete reinstall of grub, maybe using one of the other distro's as the holder of grub? At one time they did all the grub launching as each addition was made

View 6 Replies View RelatedI had a working setup of opensuse 11.0, dual booting using grub installed on the home partition. I tried to install 11.3 from the coverdisc of linux format (LXFDVD136). It took 5 goes before the install succeeded. Mostly stopping at the "boot installed system" stage. I put 11.3 on a formatted partition in the same place as 11.0, and put grub there too.
The system will not boot without assistance. I have to use a supergrub disc and tell it which partition to boot. If I use boot linux from supergrub I get the Grub error message 15 file not found. Supergrub CAN find windows and it boots with the win command. Automatic and yast initiated attempts to check for software upgrades are blocked by the application with pid 4587.
I have openSUSE in a dual-boot environment with Win Vista. Everything worked fine with 11.0, but after installation of 11.1 Vista does not hibernate. The screen gets dark, but after a while it turns on again so I can see that Vista did not hibernate, but just lock the session. In another forum I was given the tip to add makeactive to the Vista entry in menu.lst. This worked for the initial problem, but got me a new one: the computer booted straight into Vista without showing Grub, so I had to reinstall SUSE (after doing this Vista once again does not hibernate).

Installed 11.4 on friend's Vista box in multiboot. Inserted the DVD while running Vista, got the option to install locally from w/in Windows, thought "I've never done it this way before, why not?"Part way thru the install setup, the system froze, power button time.On reboot, got a grub-like DOS looking screen with a title bar that says "Windows Boot Manager" -- the screen gives the choice ofWindows VistaopenSUSE 11.4 installer (local)I chose the 11.4 install, and everything worked ok, the system is now up and running.However, upon each boot, I first get the normal grub screen; if 11.4 is chosen, no probs, but when Windows is chosen, I get the same Windows Boot Manager dos screen as above, asking which OS you want, Windows or openSUSE 11.4 installer.
Would like to eliminate the Windows Boot Manager screen.Aside 1: I assume the openSUSE folder in Windows C is expendable?Aside 2: Both 11.4 installs I have done so far have resulted in the Iggy splash screen being vertically fragmented. No big problem with that, just wondering if it's a sign of other trouble?
I upgraded to 10.04 and my AWN dock won't automatically start even though the 'box' is tic'd and it's showing in the Startup Applications. I did lose all of my configurations as well after upgrading and had to reinstall everything on the dock.
Also, there are little numbers on the launchers like for Trash and Email that tell me how many items are in there. The Trash was easy to remove the numbers by right clicking and choosing the Preferences option. There was a place to disable that but there isn't one for the Email and those little numbers look well.
I recently updated from Fedora 9 to Fedora 12. Everything else works fine, but the situation with Fedora automatically recognised new devices when plugged in has changed to the exact opposite. Under Fedora 9, all devices I plugged in were always automatically recognised, whether I liked it or not. Under Fedora 12, nothing is ever automatically recognised any more. Whenever I plug something in, the system just ignores it. If they devices turn up as block device descriptors in /dev, I can manually mount them and access them through the mount points. Otherwise, I can't do squat. Now I can only access my digital camera by manually mounting it and copying the files. This works, but is cumbersome. Under Fedora 9, I used to be able to use GPhoto to download the pictures via PTP. Not any more. GPhoto acts as if the camera wasn't even there. So does F-Spot. What has happened? Have I missed installing some kernel module or service or something?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using vnc to connect to my ubuntu box from my windows box however I don't like the way it works.1) It doesn't start automatically. I have to be logged into my username before I can connect to my box.2) It takes control of the screen on my ubuntu box which isn't what I really want to happen. I'm used to connecting via rdp in windows where I connect to the other computer and if you looked at the other screen you wouldn't even know I am logged on.This is handy if someone else is using the pc plus I just don't like everything that I am doing to appear on a computer screen that I can't see. I find it kind of freaky.
