OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 Logs Out Automatically Without Notice?
Feb 16, 2010
Well, its been 2 days since I have had Suse 11.2 on this laptop. (Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo M7400 1.6 GHz Centrino, 60GB HDD)Everything seems to work in order, but at certain times, the computer will just log out on its own, without any reason. It gives no error when it does this, so there is no way for me to determine what the cause is. As far as the rest of the OS goes, everything seems perfectly fine, except for the automatic log out the computer does. It just annoys me when the computer logs out by itself sometimes because then I am lost on where I was before, since nothing gets saved when it does this. It makes things really challenging when you are typing something as I am now and then the computer just logs itself out on its own, leaving me with nothing because it does not save anything. And if so, what are the repair steps to this issue??

I'm running 11.3 with GNOME on my Dell Inspiron 1525 with on board Intel video card. I had 11.2 64 bit running but did a fresh install of 11.3 with the 32 bit version. When the problems started occurring (locking up, logging out by itself, applications crashing that were fine in 11.2...), I tried reinstalling. When that didn't help I tried the 64 bit 11.3 but the problems keep happening. I can't get any work done. I've noticed that these occur while the computer is idle (either screensaver or later after the display has been turned off). I'll come back to my computer and notice that either the computer is locked up (screensaver frozen, audio on a one-second-loop...) and have to restart the computer or I come back to find the login screen waiting for me (and obviously have a new session when I log in).

I don't know if this a bug or some setting that I have changed inadvertently, but when I start up my computer Ubuntu now logs me on automatically to the sole user account I have created but without asking me my password.I rarely fiddle about with settings and am not aware of touching anything to do with user accounts etc. Obviously I don't want this behaviour otherwise I wouldn't have put a password on the account. Everytime I log on I want to choose what language I want to run my system from the log on screen.
In administration > users and groups > it says my user account password is asked at login. Is there an option somewhere else to turn this behaviour on or off?how I could have accidentally turned this behaviour on?

I have a logserver.log located at /usr/local/logserver. It's NSLOGDEPTH=100. I'm not sure if this is the reason but my log file is only up to 100 only..samplelogserver001.loglogserver002.log......logserver100.logThe other logs were already removed. I do not have any scripts on logrotate for this specific logs. My question now is: How can I move some logs automatically so that it will not be removed totally from the system. I'm planning to move it locally on the server and compressed it at the same time. My second plan is to move it on another server. Do I need to create a script on this or can be done on logrotate? (note: i do not want to remve old logs)

I have a few items in the Menu that refer to the start scripts of extracted Java programs that came as tarballs.Go into the Menu Editor and rename one of these (e.g. to reflect an updated version)Save - Message says "Updating System Configuration"Browse using Lancelot - the old name is not there but the new one is.Search using Lancelot - the new name is not there but the old one is.The new name is only in the search after reboot. Is there anyway to get Lancelot to update the search index straight away after a menu editor change?

I'm trying to set up automatic recording of user sessions when they login without their knowledge. I tried sticking the script command into /etc/profile and but that didn't really work. I also tried /etc/bashrc but that had the same affect.I have also tried setting the shell in /etc/passwd to SHELL=/bin/bash /usr/bin/script -q /testing.txt.

I've got a fresh install of 11.3 on a x64 machine. I've managed to work through most of the initial hiccups and get a smooth system. However I've noticed that the 'System Logs' option in YAST is missing. Has anyone else noticed this? Is there some supplimental package that I should install? If it was removed from 11.3, is there an easy way to find and read these logs?

I have a set of bash scripts that I'm running that automatically build a set of packages for me and redirect their output into logs. Basically, I have a bunch of lines that are something like this: ${CONFIGURE_DIR}/configure &> ${LOG_DIR}/log or cd ${CONFIGURE_DIR} && make &> ${LOG_DIR}/log, etc.
This is supposed to make the entire process silent. However, sometimes with some packages some output leaks to my console (either stdout or stderr). I'm thinking that maybe the configure scripts/make are executing commands within new shell instances that don't inherit my redirect, or something to that effect.
Another reason for thinking this is that in another part of my script I detect errors when running make by testing with "if [ $? -ne 0 ]", and if the redirect leaks to my console and also the leaked output indicates that the build failed ("make: Error" and so on), then my $? test fails (i.e., it thinks that $? == 0, whereas a failed make should return a non-zero value). It's as if my original script can't "see" the results from child commands executed from later scripts.

When I boot up openSUSE 11.2, sometimes it logs me in automatically (which is the setting I have) and sometimes it doesn't. How do I figure out why this is occurring?

We have a MS Windows domain in our school. Some time ago, when I was toying with an earlier version of Opensuse, I joined a box to our domain. I am trying 11.2 now, and my box is box is being named automatically, to what I named the previous box (which is long gone). I guess this is an issue with my Windows domain controller, but I'm not sure what to do about it. The domain controller is running Windows Server 2008 Enterprise.

When I plug in my microSD into my usb adapter I get an error message. 've seen lots of posts about this error message but everything I've read has been way over my head.

I am using OpenSuse 11.1. When the computer boots, I come to the welcome screen and then I have the screen with the users on the left hand side. One user is selected by default, and the space for the password is in blank. If I do not enter the password immediately, black dots start to appear in the password box as if there was somebody typing a password.

After the install on the hd I had to modify manually the start option otherwise I wouldn't. I found out in the option that I have to give: pci=noacpi and the start will go on. My question is, how to do this automatically, I mean modifying before every boot would be annoying.

If I click on the shutdown bottom (in my lower panel) I get an new window to choose if I really want to shut down or restart or suspend or hibernate. Under that alternatives there is an text that says: "[...] The system will automatically shut down in 60 seconds." Why is the text "60" not running down like a countdown? Can I set another (shorter) time for the automatic shutdown (10 seconds)? If so, where? Or shut I just make another bottom to shut down immediately?
I use (normally) OpenSuse/SUSE Linux
Release 11.1
Kernel Linux 2.6.27.45-0.1-pae
Gnome 2.24.1

I am using SUSE 11.2. And I am really baffled with a strange NFS problem.I have set up the fstab on the client and exports on the server correctly, because if I manually run # /etc/init.d/nfs startStarting NFS client services: sm-notify doneI can see and use the NFS partition perfectly, there is no problem at all.But nfs cannot successfully start at boot. In yast, I have enabled nfs in "System Services (Runlevel)" at runlevel 3 and 5. So it should run automatically, but I always get the following error message:
/var/log/message:
Apr 10 20:07:56 hubble kernel: [ 33.654768] Installing knfsd (copyright (C) 1996 okir@monad.swb.de).

I want to automatically run a script once the system has entered runlevel 3 during boot (the script requires network access). I know about /etc/init.d/boot.local but it's my understanding it's triggered in runlevel 1. I also know about init.d scripts but they seem a little daunting.

I installed dansguardian & squid on 11.2 and things seem to run fine. Squid auto starts but dansguardian does not. I have checked Yast2's runlevel services option and dansguardian is enabled to 'Yes'. But when i check with 'service dansguardian status' it reports 'unused'.If i start dansguardian by hand, things work perfectly fine.I am in a desperate situation since there are 4 other computers which are dependent on this setup to work correctly

I installed opensuse 11.2 today on my external hard drive and everything is running great, but I want to see if I can make a modification to the way my computer boots. I share this computer with others and they are not going to be happy to have to wait for the boot menu to start when they turn on the computer in order to choose which OS to run (Especially since if they do not make a choice it auto runs opensuse after a few seconds).
What I would like is if opensuse can be "out of sight, out of mind" and only load when I put in the live cd and then choose to boot from my external...... is it possible to do this?I am not a computer wizard and do not work in the industry.

On Ubuntu, the local user is automatically added the xhost list when logging in (via a script in /etc/X11/Xsession.d).
Is there a way to enable this in OpenSUSE?
(My original problem is that I cannot interact with a running X session when loggin in via SSH, since newer GDM versions don't create $HOME/.Xauthority any longer.)

I always manually check Update Manager and there are updates, but I never received any kind of notice indicating such. I thought some sort of popup or notice was supposed to appear in the panel or something to alert me that updates are available? Am I mistaken? Is there a setting I need to activate be alerted that updates are available?

Above adapter can be installed on v10.2 and 11.3 using ndiswrapper:-
1. Copy the 3 driver files from Windows:- like netwpn111.inf, WPN111.sys & ar5523.bin.
(Be carfeul about the exact names, because they have changed over time).
2. sudo ndiswrapper -i netwpn111.inf
3. sudo ndiswrapper -m
4. sudo modprobe ndiswrapper (the adapter should light up at this point and networks will be detected shortly after - see network manager). (Be careful of paths here - e.g. I had to use /sbin/modprobe - so 'whereis' may be necessary to find these commands).
2nd When I reboot, I need to run the modprobe command again. How do I make the module load automatically on boot? Also (and this is minor), can I bypass the KWallet, keyring thing? it seems silly to enter a password for the keyring and then click another password dialog, when I can just as easily enter the password for the network itself.

I am running latest apache2 available in the lucid repos on my desktop. All packages are updated as of this moment. Now in the root of my web server I have placed several soft links that point to folders on another ext3/ntfs partitions on the same disk. When I try to download any large file (say above 500M)on this server using firefox, when the 'save' window appears, my desktop freezes, I notice very high cpu-ram-disk usage, even though I have not yet clicked on 'ok' to save the file. This issue is not present when the file size is small. Note that firefox and the webserver are running on the same computer.
Also I have tried nginx and lighttpd and the issue is present there as well. When I tried downloading the same files using Internet Explorer 6.0 using a XP VM the issue is not present. However on Windows as well using Firefox the issue recurs.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 desktop edition on one of my machines and its connected to internet via network proxy with username/password authentication enabled.
I've provided proxy details in Synaptic Package Manager and also in System -> Preferences -> Network Proxy. I can see any new updated libraries when I check Update Manager, but somehow I do not see the notice of availability of Ubuntu 10.10 and hence not able to upgrade.
On my home laptop (Dell Inspiron 700m) which connects to internet directly and over there I was able to upgrade to 10.10
So I think there is some problem with respect to update manager where it cant see the new release available behind proxy.
