OpenSUSE Install :: Automatically Adding Local User To Xhost List?

Jun 8, 2011

On Ubuntu, the local user is automatically added the xhost list when logging in (via a script in /etc/X11/Xsession.d).

Is there a way to enable this in OpenSUSE?

(My original problem is that I cannot interact with a running X session when loggin in via SSH, since newer GDM versions don't create $HOME/.Xauthority any longer.)

OpenSUSE :: Adding User To Access Control List In Nautilus

Aug 13, 2010

I have a shared folder that has it's access restricted to certain users on a file server at work. Currently when I try to add a user I follow this process:
Right click the Folder, go to Properties
Click the "Access Control List" tab
Select a user from the "Participants List"
Click Add

For most users this process works fine but with one of them I get the following error:
"Could not add ACL entry: Invalid Argument"
I also tried a script that a former employee created which seems to employ this command:
setfacl -m u:<USER>:rw- <PATH>
Running the command with the correct user and path returns a similar "Invalid Argument" error.
We're using OpenSuse 10.2.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 - XHost From Local Machine

Feb 2, 2011

I would like to be able to have one local user connect to the X of another local user and run an X program. On fedora, I can simply run:
$ xhost +
And then have the other user run:
$ sol --display=0.0

This is not working on my ubuntu (10.10). I am guessing that there is an additional level of Xauth restrictions, but I cannot find out how to get past them. Both users are local to the machine. I would like to not use sux or gdsu as both require you to enter the password and I would like this to be seemless. I am aware of the security concerns and believe that I have mitigated them.

OpenSUSE Install :: Adding DVD's To Repository List?

Feb 7, 2010

I just purchased openSUSE 11.2 x64 on DVD from osdisc.com, as well as the 5 x64 repository DVD's. The base install went fine, but when I try to add thos's to my software repositories using yast they all have the same listed name, "repository" - I can change that to show "repository disk 1" etc, but when I go to install stuff and the software installer asks for "repository disk 1" I put that in the dvd drive, and it cannot recognise it, spits it out and asks for the same disk again...hmmmm. Should I not change the default name that comes up when each DVD is added to the list? If I leave them unchanged will I be told which is the correct disk to insert, remembering that in the list they all have the same name

Ubuntu Networking :: SSH Adding A New Non-Local User?

Jan 5, 2011

Trying to add my wife as a user to my computer, only to log on through SSH, not locally. Only problem is I use keys for logging in.

I've gone through the guide on the ubuntu website, created a key, copied to through a pen drive, put it in her .ssh folder on my computer, but it still comes up with the error:

Code:
Agent admitted failure to sign using the key.
Permission denied (publickey).

Is there a group I need to add her to, or add her public key to a different file somewhere?

OpenSUSE :: Automatically Set Shortcuts On New User's Desktop On Account Creation?

Aug 28, 2010

I've used it recreationally in the past but am now attempting to deploy an OpenSUSE LTSP server in my wife's computer lab at her school. really like to make it easy for her to give the kids instructions for the day via a text file/pdf located on the kid's desktop. What I'd like to do since there's 500 kids that she teaches is create a shared folder for each grade that she just drops the assignment instructions into. I'd like to avoid having to add a link manually in each user's /home/*/desktop folder, so is there an easy way to do this?

In case the above isn't clear...
1) Create folder on teacher's desktop that is set to share
2) Create a link on each user's desktop to enable them to access said folder
3) Ideally, all new users will have a specific folder based on which usergroup they belong to (1st grade, 2nd grade, etc

Server :: Adding A Record To Local DNS

Mar 14, 2011

I have configured a CENTOS 5.5 server with DHCP + DNS. The network environment contains clients to obtain IP dynamically and some amy be configured manually. Until noe I have not used any GUIs for the configuration.

Now I want to manually add some hosts to my DNS. Can this be done by directly adding the host names to data files (pointed by the f/w and rev zones)? Or should this be done differently?

What are the good DNS GUI tools available for CentOS?

what is the correct way/procedure to re-create a user home directory. For instance, on a Mac/Windows machine, i would just rename the existing user profile [home dir], and then just log back in as the user - job done. On OpenSuse/Linux, it seems it does not work that way..?! When i try to rename my home folder to say me.old via root, and log back in as me, i get all kinds of errors. Opensuse does create a new home dir, but it appears not properly.

OpenSUSE Install :: Adding Os's To The Grub?

I was just wanting to manually add Mint to the Grub menue.I would like it to be added to the Suse grub as I prefer the look of it to the Mint grub.

OpenSUSE Install :: Adding A New Partition?

Mar 6, 2010

I want to upgrade to 11.2 from 10.3. I was looking at disk usage and noticed the last time I set up my system, I allocated too much space to the / partition. It's only 50% used, while /home is 83% used. Rather than resizing and messing up /home, I thought about just adding a new partition created from the / partition. Call it say /data or something and put music, pics, pdf files and such there. But, would it be automatically mounted and what about permissions?

OpenSUSE Install :: Adding A New Physical HD?

Jul 2, 2010

I've opensuse 11.2 installed and running. I have separate mount points for /, home, srv. I have two physical HDs of total 160gb in my system. Now my / partition is nearly full 91-93%. I'm thinking of adding another HD. I cannot figure out how to transfer data after installing the new drive. I plan to move /srv and /home from the main physical disk to the new disk and then add the space freed from under /srv and /home to the / partition. I understand the procedure how to add the drive, how to partition it and so on. I need some help in understanding how to shift the data from one physical drive to the other without losing any simlinks and data of course. I have a virtual host web server running on my machine, so you can understand how difficult it would be if I'd need to do all the linking manually again or worst case if I'd lose any data.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.4 Local Install Doesn't Cleanup?

May 21, 2011

Installed 11.4 on friend's Vista box in multiboot. Inserted the DVD while running Vista, got the option to install locally from w/in Windows, thought "I've never done it this way before, why not?"Part way thru the install setup, the system froze, power button time.On reboot, got a grub-like DOS looking screen with a title bar that says "Windows Boot Manager" -- the screen gives the choice ofWindows VistaopenSUSE 11.4 installer (local)I chose the 11.4 install, and everything worked ok, the system is now up and running. However, upon each boot, I first get the normal grub screen; if 11.4 is chosen, no probs, but when Windows is chosen, I get the same Windows Boot Manager dos screen as above, asking which OS you want, Windows or openSUSE 11.4 installer.

Would like to eliminate the Windows Boot Manager screen.Aside 1: I assume the openSUSE folder in Windows C is expendable?Aside 2: Both 11.4 installs I have done so far have resulted in the Iggy splash screen being vertically fragmented. No big problem with that, just wondering if it's a sign of other trouble?

OpenSUSE Install :: Boot Very Slow After Adding HD To Fstab

Dec 15, 2009

I have an external hard drive that I use with my laptop and I want it to be mounted at boot. I used YaST to do this by using the Partitioner. I selected the volume, then edited then chose to have the partition mounted at boot.

On next book the computer booted up and mounted the device as I expected but the boot up process took a long time. When I would usually get the desktop I got only a black screen for about one minute, the the desktop finally loads. I tried to reboot a number of times but I still get the same delay.

When I go back and choose to have the hard drive not auto mount and then reboot there is no delay in loading the desktop. So it seems like mounting this device is delaying the loading of my desktop on boot somehow.

Below is the line that is added to my fstab file to auto mount the drive:
