Mar 28, 2011If I can install more than one distro on my Multiple boot pc. I already have, Mandriva, Win xp, and Win 7 on. But you know how it is, you want to try out all the linux systems if that is possible. I guess using a live cd would allow me to do it. I do not want to bugger up the systems I already have on.

Jun 18, 2010I have two different laptops that I would like to make bootable flash drive installs for, but would then like to have at least /home on a common removable storage (either a big flash drive or USB or ethernet hard drive) to share between the two laptops (I'll only be using one laptop as a Linux box at a time). One laptop (Dell Latitude D410) is only 32 bit capable (Pentium M - I think there's a 64 bit Core 2 CPU available for the socket 479, but I don't know if the BIOS / mobo will support it). If I'm going back and forth between 32 and 64 bits, can I share /home? What else can I share - /usr or anything else?

Oct 27, 2010I can't find the place to set the system to keep multiple kernels. For the first time in a long time, updates are giving me grief. I've kept the last working nvidia driver in case I need it.
Now I would like to keep one old kernel when I update to the new one. I had a lab rat that never got rid of old kernels and that was too much. It is possible to keep the last working kernel when you update, isn't it?

OpenSUSE Install :: User Locked Out After Multiple Passwords?
Dec 5, 2009I am having a problem with some users who get locked out after more than 3 failed attempts at login. This is exactly what I want to see - they will eventually remember those stronger passwords (maybe?) - but how do I re-enable their access? I haven't tried this on a live box but I can easily recreate the situation via vnc to the server in question and I assume the result would be the same. I like the policy that leads to this but I do need to let them back in - eventually. Where is the blacklist kept and how do I edit/reset it?

Jul 9, 2011I know that in previous versions of OpenSuSE one could be in front of the screen/KBD/mouse get things started, and log into another session and get things started there and run some apps, and so on. Now with OpenSuSE 11.x I see no means in which to do so. Is there another way? Point being is that I want to run one application as one user session and another application in yet another user session. Either one I can get to by switching user accounts at one screen/kbd/mouse. Or through VNC. No need to run something like xen or VMWare and incur additional overhead. (It is next on my list to try though.

Jul 24, 2011I have installed openSUSE with Gnome3.
I had to install the nVidia proprietary drives so the OS would boot into Gnome3 and not fail safe mode. Without the proprietary drivers installed the display settings said:

After installing the nVidia drivers Gnome3 works in one monitor, but I would like to be able to use my other two monitors (totaling three with two video cards.)
When I run nvidia-settings to generate an xorg.conf file it hangs, so I used nvidia-xorgconf to generate the xorg file and then used nvidia-settings to configure my extra screens.
This fails with a permissions error, running sudo nvidia-settings fails with the following error:

So, I ran nvidia-settings, saved the settings file to my /home/$USER dir, then copied xorg.conf to /etc/X11/
Logging out and logging back into Gnome fails with the error:
This problem extends to Ubuntu running Gnome3, so my thinking is:
a) Imma id10t and something in my xorg.conf file is wrong,
b) there is an issue with Gnome3/nVidia/Multiple displays.
I would really like to use Gnome3, it works on multiple other machines (ironically all ATI devices) just not the machine I use all day long...

Aug 18, 2010Dual Booting my laptop and unable to change the Boot Records on the drive. Not because I dont know how, but my primary OS will fail to boot(win7).
I have drive partitioned as follows...
sda1 = Win7 system (default install)
sda2 = Win7 Main (default install)
sda3 = swap
sda4 = Extension (I think thats what its called)
sda5 = / (ext4)
What I need is a boot cd or perferably Grub installed on a 256MB Thumb drive with the options to load the installed system from sda5.

Nov 23, 2010I tried to install 11.3 on my acer aspire 7530 notebook to have dual boot with xp.
I made 4 partitions: one for xp, and the three for linux were made automatically.Before installation I got the warning that the partition wasn't entirely below 128 gb, I installed anyway to give it a try.
The installation froze at 92% and after the laptop wouldn't boot.
Now I've formatted the hard disk and installed windows on a partition leaving a free un formatted partition of 100 gb.

Sep 29, 2010I have a Dell laptop with Windows XP installed, and for various reasons (Help: I borked my WindowsXP boot when installing OpenSUSE 11.3) I can not install a GRUB boot loader to the first hard drive (hd0).
I currently have a second hard drive in this laptop with a perfectly working OpenSUSE 11.3 instance, but no way to boot into it. I remember back in ancient times, a common option with Linux distros was to create a boot floppy to boot into Linux rather than installing GRUB or LILO to MBR. Since this laptop doesn't have a floppy drive I'd like to do the same thing with a USB stick. Is there any way to install GRUB (or something similar) to a USB stick? What I am not asking here is whether I can put a full, bootable Linux instance on a USB drive - I only want a boot loader on USB that launches to the appropriate mount point on (hd1).
OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Boot Into SuSE (Dual Boot With Win7)?
May 26, 2011I'm trying to dual-boot Windows 7 with openSuSE 11.4, i was told that i should install SuSE after windows 7 as it takes care of the boot-loader and automatically detects my windows installation and not vice-versa,
But that is not true in my case.
So i had 2 hard disks one had windows 7 installed and one was empty so i decided that i should get openSuSE 11.4 on the empty hard disk and dual-boot it with windows 7 (that i already had installed). Downloaded the DVD, put it on a USB and installed SuSE on the other hard disk normally, it detected my windows installation on my main hard disk but i didn't touch that, only formatted my other hard disk to ext4
After the installation it booted automatically into SuSE, but now every time on a fresh restart the system boots automatically into windows. Methods i have already tried to resolve this and it didn't work:
1. Booted from the DVD and selected an "Upgrade" not "New Installation" so i could boot again into my SuSE installation which did work, checked my "Boot Loader" options from YaST and checked the "Boot from MBR" option instead of the "Boot from root partition" option, That Did NOT work.
2. Used the same method to Boot into SuSE with the "Upgrade" Option opened up the terminal and tried to install grub manually again using this link

Jun 24, 2010I'm new to OpenSuse and also fairly new to Linux in general. I installed OpenSuse 11.2 on a secondary machine and I really like it. However, during booting it stops somewhere half way, giving me only a black page but with a functioning cursor arrow. I can't do anything with it though. I re-booted in recovery mood and managed to boot up as root using the command 'startx'. How can I get back to "my own" log-in from here, with my own settings etc? There's obviously something missing during boot-up but where do I look?

Aug 5, 2010I have been having a problem with my 11.1 recently, in that it gets stuck at a point in the boot process that tells me "INIT cannot execute /bin/sh" then it says "INIT: id 1 is respawning too fast please wait 5 minutes" and tells me there are no more preocesses in this runlevel and repeats this no matter how long I wait. Since I couldnt find any information on fixing that, I decided to just upgrade to 11.3 with a boot disc. Now my computer wont recognize the disc to boot from it and still gets stuck at the same screen.

Jan 2, 2010i had a working multi-boot system, vista on sda1,2; swap sda3; ext=sda4; ubuntu sda5; fedora sda6; data sda7 - i mount the data partition when using all of the linux releases so i don't have to have multiple copies of music, docs, etc. everything has worked fine until yesterday. i tried to install fc12 on sda6, replacing fc11. it required me to format sda6 as ext4. i wasn't sure where i had grub installed, but have a backup of menu.lst in data (sda7), so figured i could let it install to mbr or wherever it wanted to by default. when the install completed and i reboot, i get a black screen and these messages: CLIENT MAC ADDR: 00 19 XX XX XX GUID: XXXXX PXE-E53:
No boot filename received
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent.
No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key I tried reinstalling fc12, same exact errors. I then thought maybe the problem had something to do with ext4 partition mixed in with ext3's, so i installed mepis on the sda6, and let it write grub to mbr (i think, not really sure where it wrote it). anyway, i still get the identical black screen. no grub type menu or anything. the screen used to show "DHCP for a few seconds", but doesn't anymore after i disconnected the ethernet cable.........

Jul 18, 2011I have installed "open-SUSE 11.4" on a "500GB Free Agent External Hard Drive". I didn't have any problem in booting since last week that I booted it from my laptop. Also I did it before several times from then when I try to boot it e.g. from an "Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz" PC the time between loading INITRD and starting boot sequence messages lasts nearly 30 minutes!(i didn't actually measure it but it take a long time in the same order). after starting boot sequence which is showed on monitor everything looks normal. e.g copy of files would be done by speeds between 2MB/s to 30 MB/s depending on the targets.I used to use the external hard derive to boot from different laptops and PC's from start but I didn't have such a problem anytime.

Apr 3, 2010I'm a noob but enjoying dual booting. However, every time I run update manager I get a new vmlinuz entry and now I have multiple boot options in my grub boot menu. Now when I have like 5 ubuntu entries to move past to select Windows. and the latest Ubuntu is always at the bottom so I have to annoyingly scroll down to select the latest there. I don't really understand what the vmlinuzXXX entries in the boot folder are for so I don't want to delete them. I've thought about editing the loop in the 10_linux file in the grub.d folder but it looks like its calling a function or macro or something:

But like I said, I'm a noob to all this (a .Net developer on Windows professionally) and don't understand where this is. It looks like this function call has the logic I need to fix. Oct 22, 2010I'm using Ubuntu Maverick which seems to run ok. The problem is when booting my PC. Often it takes anywhere between two and six attempts to boot before a successful boot. Sometimes it fails with "No signal" before it reaches the grub screen, sometimes is passes grub only to fail 15 secs later with a "No signal".I have an NVidia Ge Force 6600 LE graphics card, with the latest driver 260.19.06.

Jul 18, 2011I have an 1TB hard drive, half of it for Windows XP SP3, another half for OpenSUSE 11.4. After installing OpenSUSE, it didn't take me much time to notice that there was something wrong with KDE: sometimes it loaded quite fast, as expected, but most of the time I'd have to wait around 1 minute in that loading screen. Then I updated the kernel, as well as KDE itself, but that didn't solve the problem.
After that I tried to start the system using Enlightnment, and it was lightning fast compared to KDE, however, I didn't quite like its interface, and for some reason GNOME refused to start. All that was too frustrating to me, so I gave up and have been using Windows for the last few weeks. Got sick of it now and here I am on OpenSUSE again. Oh, it feels sooo much better! BUT, I'm still with the same problem.
My specs are as follow:
Motherboard: Gigabyte MA78GM-S2H (with updated BIOS, version F11)
Processor: AMD Phenom X3 8450
Memory: 2GB
Videocard: Nvidia Geforce 8500GT (using NVIDIA proprietary drivers)
OpenSUSE 11.4
KDE 4.6.0
Did I forget anything important?
Ps.: I didn't have these problems with Mandriva 2010.2, which, if I'm correct, used the same KDE version.

Aug 31, 2011I've recently added a new hard disk and due to mother board controllers this new hard disk is known as sda.Before that my boot partition was /dev/sda3 and know this changed to sdb3.Whenever grub menu appears and I choose opensuse,it can't find /dev/sda3 .It seems that I should edit menu.lst or change boot loader parameter.something like root (hd1,2).But I don't how I can do this with opensuse boot loader.Though I could do this with CentOS easily.
