OpenSUSE Install :: Create USB Boot Drive (like The Old Boot Floppies)?

Sep 29, 2010

I have a Dell laptop with Windows XP installed, and for various reasons (Help: I borked my WindowsXP boot when installing OpenSUSE 11.3) I can not install a GRUB boot loader to the first hard drive (hd0).

I currently have a second hard drive in this laptop with a perfectly working OpenSUSE 11.3 instance, but no way to boot into it. I remember back in ancient times, a common option with Linux distros was to create a boot floppy to boot into Linux rather than installing GRUB or LILO to MBR. Since this laptop doesn't have a floppy drive I'd like to do the same thing with a USB stick. Is there any way to install GRUB (or something similar) to a USB stick? What I am not asking here is whether I can put a full, bootable Linux instance on a USB drive - I only want a boot loader on USB that launches to the appropriate mount point on (hd1).

OpenSUSE Install :: Create Boot Floppies From CD Install Version?

May 19, 2010

Short question: It has been possible in earlier releases to create boot floppies from CD install version, for those PCs who haven't a bootable CD drive.11.2 is deployed as a DVD iso, but I need CD isos for an older laptop with a bootable CD drive only, not DVD. Is there a similar possibility for 11.2 also available?I want a full install, not the readonly "Live" versions.

OpenSUSE Install :: Create Partition For Dual Boot

Jan 3, 2010

I am new to linux. I tried and failed. I need some help on Creating patitions (I think it is root, swap and home).I have HP laptop with WIndows 7 installed. I have shrink the volume to allow Linux installation. I have three partitions, first one is windows boot - about 100MB. Second one is about 110GB and it has windows 7. Third one is UNALLOCATED space of 110GB that I intended for Suse.

Now I am going to install the Suse. The unallocated spaces should be "primary" or "extended"? Also, should I divided this new partition in to three partition? If does, what are sizes for each? I want to learn Linux so I will able to look for better job. This is the first time I ever look into linux and confused.

OpenSUSE Install :: Create A Dual-boot With Windows 7?

Nov 11, 2010

I'm doing some research for a friend who wants to dual boot Windows 7 with a Linux Distro that has Perl inbuilt & also supports .MP3 and other popular codecs "out of the box"

From my limited research, OpenSUSE seems to fit the bill (as does Mandriva Powerpack).

Also, how easy is it to create a dual-boot with Windows 7 with this distro?

I have read some of the installation guides offered here and attempted to install Opensuse via my USB stick without success. My question is there a setup.exe download offered for Vista users who would like to create a dual boot laptops? OpenSUSE Install :: Create A Instance On A Windows 7 PC And Use Dual-boot?

Nov 23, 2010

I'm trying to create a Linux instance on a Windows 7 PC and use dual-boot. I have created 64GB of space for Linux. Is this enough? When I boot from the live DVD and go through the setup, I get stuck setting up the unassigned space as a linux partition. I don't understand what the setup is trying to tell me and I'm afraid I'll wipe out Windows 7. The message I get says there isn't enough space even though the unassigned available area is 64GB. I am very timid about following what Yast2 is telling me because to my untrained eye it appears the setup wants to use my entire hard drive. Where can I find more information about the disk setup section of the installation process?

OpenSUSE Install :: Remove 11.1 From Drive And Restore Boot?

Feb 23, 2010

I have used Ubuntu 8.04 and uprgaded to the new 9.10 both using the gneom desktop. I wanted to work with KDE and SUSE so I bought the Linux Format magazine with the DVD 126 which had SUSE 11.1 with the KDE desk top. I have a Toshiba L455 laptop and had windows 7 on 110 gb and had ubuntu 8.04 on 50 gb and ubuntu 9.10 ob 48 gb. I had ran the installer and it identified both linux systems and I selected to install SUSE in the space allocated to 8.04. It only boots to suse with the option to select windows. It showes 9.10 mixed with suse. I have not used suse. Is there an uninstall that will allow me to start over with the installation after creating a partition first. How can I get 9.10 to boot or how can I recover data from it.

I have a laptop with a small (dual boot) hard drive. It is a dual boot with Windows XP and Open Suse 11.1. I want to remove Suse Linux but keep the Windows side. I need to keep that Windows drive just the way it is. I have OpenSUSE 11.2 installed in another laptop and want to keep them separate. I don't want to damage the proprietary program on the windows side. My challenge is I do not have aa Windows install CD, I do have the recovery disk that came with the Laptop, but this DOES NOT include the Proprietary program I want to keep. Is there a way to remove Linux from this dual boot drive without erasing Windows?

OpenSUSE Install :: Boot-up Results In A Read-only Root Drive?

May 20, 2011

Somehow, the wife got her laptop into this situation yesterday. The Windows partition booted normally when selected from GRUB but os 11.3 would boot to a command line login and pretty much everything besides CTRL-D was useless as the root partition was ro.

I booted a live CD and found two a couple of strange things. First, the system clock was reset to the default date/time (2007-xx-xx). I reset that. Second, after correcting the time I ran fsck on the root and home partitions. Both went through with no errors reported but the 20GB root partition took a long, long time to complete while the 80GB home partition went pretty quickly. After doing the above, the system booted normally but both partitions reported running the transaction log as well as forcing fsck where I had just done that. My question is for future reference: how does the system react to a grossly incorrect date/time, especially where all the drive data reports being much later than the reported system time? Would this be the reason for what I saw? I have no idea how the wife managed to reset the system clock, even if the

OpenSUSE Install :: Cannot Boot LiveCD When Hard Drive Mode Is RAID

Jul 29, 2010

I burned the live version of OpenSUSE 11.3 (Gnome, 32bit) to a CD to test the compatibility of an HP Pavilion p6510f. Although Xubuntu 10.4 booted up fine, OpenSUSE did not. A message about RAID would appear (too briefly to read) and then the computer would reboot.I checked in the BIOS and found that the SATA drive has 3 modes: IDE, RAID and AHCI. The hard drive was set to RAID.

When I changed the hard drive mode to IDE, I was able to run the OpenSUSE live CD; but the change ruined my Windows installation. Windows doesn't boot under IDE or RAID mode. (I have reset the mode to RAID and am restoring the Windows installation.) Is there an option/argument that I can pass to the kernel so that OpenSUSE will work under RAID mode? (Since Xubuntu 10.4 was able to do it, I'm assuming OpenSUSE should be able to.)

OpenSUSE Install :: Dual Boot With Backtrack4 - Partition Drive To Make Room For Bt4?

Nov 28, 2010

finally got mostly everything fixed on my opensuse 11.3. 11.3 is my only os on my laptop right now and I want to be able to dual boot with backtrack4. I used to have bt3 but it was on a usb loading up with winxp. Anyway, I've downloaded the iso image and after hours of forum reading I figured out how to mount the iso image. Doing so allows me just to look at the files. Is there an install file somewhere I'm missing?

Also, couldn't ever figure out how to partition my drive to make room for bt4. Tried downloading gparted and failed. Tried using the expert partitioner program that came with this system but it won't allow me to create another partition. Couldn't ever find a reason why. Will bt4 allow me to create a partition upon installation? How do I install?
