Out of curiosity and stupidity, I configured 2 extended partitions to LVM in gparted. Now, I can't boot into X window, and there's only GRUB command line during boot.

Running Ubuntu 10.10. My desktop environment is screwed up and won't let me use the keyboard or mouse at the login screen. How can force a command prompt during boot?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently updated, and now when I boot it only goes as far as grub command line. There is no grub menu. The computer is a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop with only Ubuntu installed -- no dual boot, no weird partition schemes. Originally installed Ubuntu 09.04 on this computer, upgraded a couple times and it currently has (had) 10.04.1 LTS running. The update should have upgraded from kernel 2.6.32-23 to 2.6.32-24. I can boot with a live CD and mount the hard drive. The drive seems fine, so it appears to be simply a grub config issue. I have to boot with live cd to get online to check for potential solutions. So I'm taking some notes on how to use grub.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'd like to say I'm very impressed with Fedora 11. I'm a long time Linux user and I've tried many distros. But, I usually keep only the best on my laptop. For a long time that was Ubuntu but, I think Fedora 11 has made some key improvements over Ubuntu and I'm eager to switch. The problem is: I haven't been able to run Fedora as anything other than on the Live CD. Everything works perfectly and it installs but, when I reboot, Grub begins. Instead of booting, however, Grub drops into its minimal shell and gives me a command line.
I've tried installing it a number of ways now and have read much about the problems with Ext4 on Grub and took special care to see that Grub has its own, separate, /boot ext3 partition. Even then, no luck. My hardware should work fine. I've got an HP DV-5 with 4GB RAM, AMD Turion 64-bit dual-core @ 2 Ghz, and an IDE 250GB hard drive. I'm working with the 64-bit Fedora 11 Live disc with KDE as the Gui.
My Wubi installation of Ubuntu (version 9.10, I think) that I recently installed was working fine at one point, but now it isn['t. I select Ubuntu instead of Windows from the Windows boot loader, but instead of getting the usual menu of different linux versions (I think 2, as I updated it at same point), and Windows, I get the GRUB command prompt instead.I've looked at th2e Wubi Guide (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide), and I've followed the instructions for "How can I access my Wubi install and repair my install if it won't boot?", but that reveals no problems.For the record, I'm fairly new to linux and ubuntu, but I'm good with computers generally. The main operating system on my computer is Windows Vista, but I'm currently typing this from a Live CD of Ubuntu 9.10. The virtual disk (root.disk), is currently mounted as vdisk, as indicated in the Wubi Guide.
Ideally I would like to get Ubuntu to load as it used to (with a menu). However, if there is a way to boot from the GRUB command line that would be good too. I'm not at all familiar with GRUB, and the commands I've tried (boot and linux, I think), get errors saying no kernel specified, or loaded, or something like that.
I've recently had trouble reinstalling my Ubuntu system as I was getting various unusual errors as described in my old thread here. I thought it was probably something to do with my RAID-0 array which was pre-installed on my laptop from purchase being corrupted or something like that (if it's possible). I decided to simplify things for myself (not understanding RAID arrays much) so I just removed the RAID array and installed Windows and Ubuntu on the now separate hard disks. It worked fine.
I noticed quite a significant performance drop, however, with even Ubuntu boots taking longer than 30 seconds despite my laptop being both high-spec and only a few months old. Windows, as you can imagine, was dreadfully slow. I wasn't entirely convinced that this was entirely due to the loss of the RAID array - as even low-spec laptops with presumably no RAID arrays are supposed to boot Ubuntu in under 30 seconds apparently - but I read that RAID-0 arra

I have drive partitioned as follows...
sda1 = Win7 system (default install)
sda2 = Win7 Main (default install)
sda3 = swap
sda4 = Extension (I think thats what its called)
sda5 = / (ext4)
What I need is a boot cd or perferably Grub installed on a 256MB Thumb drive with the options to load the installed system from sda5.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI did a clean install of Lucid from the alternate installer, onto a generic Intel/Celeron PC box. I used a command line only install, and used the entire hard disk; there's no other OS and no other partitions on the disk. Install goes along and finishes fine, reboots, and I can log in. But if I call sudo reboot, or shut down the machine then restart it, the boot process hangs. I see the POST screen, then a flashing cursor on a black screen for a few seconds, then the monitor goes into standby. I see no messages or any kind of output to the screen. I get the same problem using the Lucid Server installer and also when installing on a different box (Dell Intel/Celeron). I also tried running all the updates after install but before any kind of reboot...same thing.
This only seems to be happening using a command line only version of Lucid. Lucid GNOME/XUBUNTU install and work OK on both boxes. I can boot from a CD or USB key, but not sure where to look or what to check.
I've got an install of CentOS 5.3 in a VM which was installed without X or Gnome.I've added X (yum groupinstall 'X Window System') and Gnome (yum groupinstall 'GNOME Desktop Environment) and can now run startx no problem.However on boot I get a command line login rather than the graphical login screen one normally gets if Gnome is included at install time.What do I need to do to get the graphical login after boot?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just did a fresh install of 11.4 and I LOVE IT!!! One of the little issues I am having though, is that there is no login screen. No matter what settings I change it still auto-logs me in.
I am using GRUB and the Boot Loader Location has both "Boot from MBR" and "Boot from Root Partition". Is this right? I would think that I should just boot from the MBR.
I installed OSS11.4 clean install over 11.3, it is suppose to be dual boot together with with winxp.
When i select to boot xp machine starts to boot but it boots forever and eventually
nothing happens further (HHD does not spin). Can it be grub problem or it's
winxp boot problem? When the actuall job of grub stops?

I've been running openSuse 11.2 for a while on my notebook.Today I turned it off at work and came home. When I tried to turn it on, it boots, shows a black screen written 'GRUB' and then NOTHING. It doesn't complete the boot process.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI started another thread about this to get help booting into openSUSE after Fedora rewrote my bootloader and deleted all other entries. I managed to fix it but I never did find out why the following commands caused my system to boot to the grub shell instead of the grub menu.

Can anyone explain to me why these commands caused my system to boot directly to a grub shell? It's as if there were no /boot/grub/menu.lst files for it to use, but after I got everything back to normal, the files were still there.
If it helps, this is how the drive was setup before and now, except Fedora was on /dev/sda4 and has since been deleted.

I'm looking for a solution which would allow me to move and resize windows (e.g. rdesktop or firefox, etc...) in X. Preferably independent of either GNOME or KDE. The purpose of this is to be able to perform demo, where certain windows would be placed on a laptop's external monitor, without the obvious mouse cursor movements and resizing.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have successfully dual booted Opensuse and Windows7 successfully, but I have to load it from the CD choosing the boot from hard drive option.
If I do not have the Opensuse CD inserted it goes to Grub Legacy and gives me the option to boot from Arch Linux, or Windows. There is no option for Opensuse and when i hit the Archl Linux option I get errors and it brings me to the /rmfa (I think) command line. Selecting Windows lets me boot to into Windows successfully.
I checked the /boot/grub/menu.list in Opensuse and everything seems to be fine, but these options do not appear on my boot loader.
HW config is: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition, MSI 785GTM-E45, 2X 1Gb Kingston HyperX PC2-8500. I have set up GRUB to dualboot openSUSE 11.2 and WindowsXP. Initially i had set up system with defaults: CPU@2600MHz (200X13) and therefore RAM@800MHz. Both openSUSE 11.2 and WindowsXP worked just fine. Memtest86 found no problems.
But after a while i decided to change this setup to: CPU@2500MHz (250X10) and therefore RAM@1000MHz, as it promised better overall performance. And now Windows still boots and works better then before. Memtest86 still can't find any problem. But openSUSE 11.2 hangs at boot. I've suspected cpufreq governor, but changing from Ondemand to Conservative in /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq doesn't help.
I did a fresh install of SuSE 11.4 (WIN7 TOO) and changed my Larger HD1 to the first HD. I was installing and got this error first: the boot loader is installed on a partition that does not lie entirely below 128GB The system might not boot if BIOS supports only lba24 (result is error during install grub mbr) status loc dev/sdb6
I continued with the install and then got:

im searching for this answer now a pretty long time and i know that many similar questions where asked and i all looked themIm trying to run a the command "vncserver" on our opensuse11.2 server when its booted.many posts here endet in "put a sh script into your /kde4/Autostart" but that didtn help for me because the server runs without a screen and normally nobody is logged in. When i logged in that worked fine.i also tried to add the command "vncserver" to "/etc/init.d/boot.local " but that didnt work too. i think its to early executed to work.i also tried to activate the service to start up at boot with chkconfig vncserver start but the service vncserver is "unknown". when i type vncserver into the console after logging in everything is alright.you see i really tried a lot and searched a long time at google and in this forum but nothing worked
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just did an upgrade from 11.1 to 11.2 and can not boot to OpenSUSE any more. That happened when the first reboot was starting after finishing the upgrade from the DVD. I tried to find the issue and use the repair system with no luck yet. Now I get no gfx for grub

I have openSUSE 11.2 and boot using GRUB. I was looking on start-up options for 11.2 and saw where it said
splash=silent
and
quiet showopts
I was wondering what they meant?
After shutting down linux the first time on suse 11.2 the grub loader won't show me the option to boot windows. I tried using wine and dosemulator to get to windows and it doesn't work because I don't know the file name to open windows.
Their are certain programs that I can only run in windows and I need windows open to install them.
I've run into a strange problem recently. My primary OS right now is Windows 7, and OpenSUSE is secondary. I had GRUB as the bootloader, and everything seemed fine, but I ran into one problem in Windows 7: one program refused to work correctly with ATI forced anti-aliasing on, but it is needed by others (or else edges look jagged).So I decided to install ATI Tray Tools. But it seems that Windows 7 is being evil and won't let install drivers that their creators didn't pay Microsoft for (thank goodness that's not the case in Linux). That means I had to use a driver overrider program, and that means that it had to change the Windows 7 BCD options. And that's where bootloaders kick in. It seems that Windows 7 is too lazy to check for its BCD on other than active partitions, so it doesn't allow the overrider to function.
So what I did was change GRUB to boot Windows 7 with makeactive flag. The problem now is - it won't deactivate! I no longer get GRUB's boot screen, it just boots to BCD directly. So my question is - is there a way to deactivate (or, rather, reactivate the /boot partition) after Windows 7 shuts down or restarts automatically? Obviously I don't want to use GPartEd each time I want to boot to Linux.
i was wondering if anyone knew how to make a Grub network boot cd. I would like to run openSUSE off of my server and not on my hard drive because i don't have a lot of space for the linux partitions.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have installed latest kubuntu (10.04) on sda7, ext4 , and i selected the advanced feature of the installer to install kubuntu bootloader on sda7. 11.1 is on sda5 .First , it destroyed my 11.1 grub bootloader on mbr . I managed to restore it with the 11.1 installation DVD. Now i try to boot kubuntu from the sda7 bootloader, without success . I searched the forums and tried some hints i found but found no similar problems. Here are the different entries i tried on grub (mbr) , content of the /boot/grub/menu.lst :
