If I can install more than one distro on my Multiple boot pc. I already have, Mandriva, Win xp, and Win 7 on. But you know how it is, you want to try out all the linux systems if that is possible. I guess using a live cd would allow me to do it. I do not want to bugger up the systems I already have on.

I have a box with Novell Suse linux installed. It asks for username and password I do not have and cannot figure out. I also have a SantaFe distro CD with which I would like to replace the Suse on the box. I cannot get the box to BIOS to change the boot order to boot from CD. I would like to break free of Windows, but can't seem to get there from here...

I have 84GB free space on this hard drive and want to install another distro. Will I be able to create another / and /home partitions for the new distro?
It would be convenient if i could simply install 11.3 along side my Ubuntu distro. I see yast enables me to reduce my sda1 and create a new partition, (sda3) However it offers to mount sda3 in /usr ? Could you offer me any advice please? My objective is to be able to select which distro from the grub menu.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am not able to boot distros installed in my /dev/sda HDD. I was using the linux distros in sda for a long time now. But, suddenly it has stopped booting. So, temporarily i have install a new one on sdb so that the problem can be fixed. That HDD is also not showing up in my BIOS boot priority list.

I have an old laptop I'd like to try Bodhi linux on from a usb stick. I've got it installed running on a newer laptop so I know the usb install works. I've searched considerably & haven't found the dummy version of how to boot any distro on usb from a floppy. I have used a DSL floppy to boot Damn small on usb. Is there an easy way to boot Bodhi or any other linux distro that is on usb using the same floppy? I type dsl fromusb to get damnsmall to run. Bodhi fromusb doesn't work.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI bought a new NVidia Asus EN210 for my HTPC, but I can't get Ubuntu to install.
First I made a live USB disk of 10.10 with Unetbootin and when I choose the option of "try Ubuntu" it starts loading and then just hangs, still showing the menu of boot options. After this I tried Xubuntu on a USB disk. This one also starts loading but then just fails. I also tried XBMC Live. This one does show the Ubuntu 10.04 screen but then just shows a black screen.
After this I found a CD with Ubuntu 10.04, I think or it is 10.10, laying around in my room. I booted it and once I select an option from the install menu it starts to load, but then just gives a black screen with a flashing "-" sign.
The strange thing is, once I pop in the old video card, which is an ATI HD4350, my Ubuntu 10.10 Live CD on USB disk does work and it does get past the menu of boot options (in my second paragraph I describe how this isn't the case with Ubuntu 10.10 combined with my NVidia card).
Situation- Laptop (2003 made Toshiba 2410) with dead secondary controller, so no CDDVD drive, BIOS does not support any form of booting from USB. Laptop has working floppy (had to repair it) distros that are good for older units like that that also support booting from diskettes, and then can mount and install from a USB CDDVD rom drive.

The problem is a little strange is that the console appears to keep reporting either unreadable sectors on sr0 for clonezilla till SQUASHFS fails to load/locate and it panic's or in the case of Parted Magic.. copying files to RAM ..cp: read error: Input/output error

Now the only problem here is I can't check the log's or dmesg the thing because it freezes the KVM and as I am offsite I have no spares with me Parted Magic does boot on a number of other servers like the R900 but will not boot at all here, I have tried safemode and disabling various other flag's but I must be missing something.
Have 3 linux distros on 3 hard drives. lost one distro from boot loader. how do I restore missing distro to boot loader? drive was not written to when one distro (drive) was updated.Example drives a, b, and c each had listing on boot loader, now after upgrade to distro on drive b order on boot loader is drive b then a and none for c.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI think the title says it all really - I've installed Mint onto a Acer aspire 5315 laptop. Its a dual boot system using Vista Basic. Grub works perfectly and to be honest Mint is great. really enjoying playing and learning. My problem is that the laptop overheats when using Mint - the cpu fan doesn't cut in and the laptop shuts down to protect the system. According to a swift google this seems to occur with mint (possibly particularly with Acer's) and maybe with other distro's too. However I'd like to keep trying to see if i can find one that works.
So my rather obvious newbie question is can I just get another distro dvd and install this onto the partition containing mint thus deleting the previous install? If I did this would Grub show the new distro ok or would it keep searching for Mint. I have a back up so if all else fails I can reinstall everything but that will have to wait till I get home

I just finish my LFS distro and now the only way I have to install it on another computer is copying files from a box two another. I want to make this proccess easy, user friendly if possible, like making an install DVD that I could just put in the drive and choose install, no livecd is needed.

My current issues stem from the fact that thus far to date, my research has essentially come up with more issues than solutions as far as this goes. Among other things, I've seen lots of references to driver issues for the touch screen, graphic issues with the Intel GMA that's installed, and so on. View 10 Replies View Relatedi multibooted with windows 7 and ubuntu 10 lucid, windows crashed for some reason and ubuntu remained running live and strong, but i want to do a clean install of windows while still having my installation of ubuntu untouched. i tried doing this on several machines but windows ended up becoming the dominant bootloader and i couldn't get grub to recognize the windows os partition and the linux partition for booting but when i did i only got the linux distro and i didn't see windows when i tried to boot into the distro it just re-directed to the grub menu it just kept doing this until i decided to turn the machine off

I've been dabbling into linux by installing Wubi on my main computer, out of ease to install, but I use windows to do many things I'm not sure if I could do as easily in linux. Anyway, I had a macbook before I got my new main computer, and have been wondering if I can install linux on my macbook to test out other distros without potentially endangering my main computer (out of complete idiocy on my part, of course). Is this possible? Is there any specific "guide" out to do this?

I want to be able to upgrade it, not just keep minor persistent changes like the methods outlined in pendrivelinux.com. The loopback file would fill out too much if I actually did a apt-get update, so I want something that installs natively on a USB flash drive with EXT3/EXT4, etc.
However, is there a distro that sends the log to a tmp ram drive, for instance? Something made *not* to wear out a USB drive too fast? I want a truly portable Linux on a UFD, not a semi-attempt that uses casper.
Laptop has broken internal CDROM. I booted with floppy to get Puppy 431 installed from USB stick. Now I have USB CDROM access thru Puppy. I can mount and see the CD fine.
Is it possible to boot or install from a currently installed linux distro (Puppy)?
I have a second free partition ext2 available, sda2, and GRUB is working fine for me on boot.
(machine also doesn't have boot from USB option, yes, it's old, a project I am working on, I have Nimblex in CD now, I think it's a live cd, I would like to try a few different ones by installing to sda2 and wiping if ng.)
Pretty soon, I hope, I'll get my brand new PC and wish to install a Linux disto. on it. openSuse may be it But I read recently that people prefer to do a fresh install of a newer version of openSuse, instead of upgrading it, apparently because of problems that may occur by the upgrade. As I understand, this preference apply to all Linux distributions and not only openSuse. Thus I wonder if there's a Linux distro. that's best in handling upgrades?I don't want to make a fresh new install each and every time that my disro. has a new version. I'm afraid to lose the data in that installation, and backing-up the data would be a headache. Also I plan to install a Windows OS alongside the Linux one via the Dual Boot configuration.

I have Vista and windows 7 both as 64 bit versions installed on the same hard drive with XP Pro 32 bit on separate partitions. So should I install the 64 bit version of Ubuntu 10.04 on this system to best be able to view and edit, copy and paste, and share folders and files between all 3 of these operating systems ? Is it true that 32 bit systems can not access any folders or files created by or on a 64 bit system, but a 64 bit can handle accessing 32 bit files, right ?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm running Fedora 12 - Linux 2.6.32.21 with a boot partion on /dev/sdb3 of a hard disk.
I downloaded a vanilla kernel version 2.6.35.4 and have built it and run it successfully. I built this kernel to play with building device drivers.
My grub configuration uses the same root filesystem for my fedora installation as my vanilla 2.6.35.4 kernel; both use the LVM root filesystem. (/dev/sd4 /dev/sdb5 /dev/sdb6)
When I'm running fedora 12 (2.6.32.21) I can see the files in /boot which contains my kernel, system-map, initramfs, grub directory, etc. I also see my vanilla kernel 2.6.35.4 and it's associated support files (map, initramfs, etc.)
My question is when I boot into my vanilla 2.6.35.4 kernel and I look in /boot, I only see my vanilla kernel and it's associated support files. No grub, no fedora kernel. If I do a df -a, I see that /dev/sdb3 is not mounted like it is when I'm running my fedora kernel. I'm confused as to what is going on here. Can anyone shed some light on this?
