OpenSUSE Install :: Upgrade 11.1 To 11.3 - Burn ISO DVD File To Multiple CDROMs?
Apr 19, 2011
How can I burn the openSUSE 11.3 ISO DVD file to multiple CDROMs to upgrade a legacy notebook (Sony Vaio PCG-FXA32) running 11.1 that has only a CDROM drive? I have the 11.3 ISO on a DVD disk.

I am new to opensuse. I want to install multimedia codecs on my opensuse 11.4. Is there any way to download multimedia codecs as an iso file and then burn a cd to install them on opensuse? Now, I am downloading "NonOSS CD" in add-on downloads section, is this iso file containing multimedia codecs?

I downloaded some AVI files (legally of course...) and there are multiple sound tracks on each file, meaning supposedly I should be able to select the language it plays. How do I set the movie player to select a language or how do I burn those AVI's onto a DVD allowing language selection (or to burn them all, already selected with English as the language it will play)?

what the logic Dolphin uses for selecting multiple files.
If I am viewing a large number of files, I want to select a subset without having
to click each file one-by-one. The way things USED to work in KDE 3.5:
Select the first file. Move the mouse to the last file, press SHIFT while clicking the file, and all the files starting with the first one selected up to the last one are selected.
In KDE4, performing the above technique produces a random selection. Sometimes,
the desired results occur. Frequently, the first few files are deselected. More frequently, files BELOW the last one are highlighted, and only a few above stay selected.
what logic is used for multiple file selection? Is there a better way to select a range of files?

I issue the command 'dd if=/dev/hdc|head -c 4294607004|m5sum'. But the checksum I get is not the correct one. Its not the checksum of the first 4294607004 bytes in /dev/hdc. And the message dd outputs is
8387904 records in
8387904 records out
Then I find 8387904 * 512 (512 because 4294607004 / 8387904 = 512.0000186) = 4294606848, which falls short of 4294607004 by a few bytes. But 8387905 * 512 > 4294607004. So I issue 'dd if=/dev/hdc ibs=512 count=8387905|head -c 4294607004|md5sum'. the message is still the same:
8387904 records in
8387904 records out

I have two different laptops that I would like to make bootable flash drive installs for, but would then like to have at least /home on a common removable storage (either a big flash drive or USB or ethernet hard drive) to share between the two laptops (I'll only be using one laptop as a Linux box at a time). One laptop (Dell Latitude D410) is only 32 bit capable (Pentium M - I think there's a 64 bit Core 2 CPU available for the socket 479, but I don't know if the BIOS / mobo will support it). If I'm going back and forth between 32 and 64 bits, can I share /home? What else can I share - /usr or anything else?

I have Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope running on my home PC (dual boot with Win XP) and have received notification that this will no longer be supported and I should upgrade to 11.04. I have a slow and costly internet connection at home and don't want to download the upgrade directly onto my computer there. Is it possible to download the upgrade somewhere else and burn to a CD to run in my home computer? I see I can do this for a new install but was wondering if it is possible for an upgrade?

Applied the Lucid Lynx 10.04 over the weekend.
Since then - I am unable to burn DVDs, although I can successfully read DVD's.
Everything worked fine before the upgrade.
Under Lucid Lynx I am able to burn CD's (both data files and .ISO) so it isn't the hardware.
I have tried Brasero and k3b as burners - they issue messages that the burner doesn't like the medium, which is standard DVD-R.
Bear in mind that I could burn similar DVDs *before* the upgrade...
Any help or suggestions on how to fix this please?

I can't find the place to set the system to keep multiple kernels. For the first time in a long time, updates are giving me grief. I've kept the last working nvidia driver in case I need it.
Now I would like to keep one old kernel when I update to the new one. I had a lab rat that never got rid of old kernels and that was too much. It is possible to keep the last working kernel when you update, isn't it?

I am having a problem with some users who get locked out after more than 3 failed attempts at login. This is exactly what I want to see - they will eventually remember those stronger passwords (maybe?) - but how do I re-enable their access? I haven't tried this on a live box but I can easily recreate the situation via vnc to the server in question and I assume the result would be the same. I like the policy that leads to this but I do need to let them back in - eventually. Where is the blacklist kept and how do I edit/reset it?

I have used the following
Code: #Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: none# title Ubuntu 10.04 booting via symlinks kernel (hd0,6)/vmlinuz root=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST9500325AS_6VE3ZHX6-part7 ro quiet splash initrd (hd0,6)/initrd.img for Ubuntu for some time. Can this symlinks-booting technique (with the appropriate partition numbers/names) be used for LinuxMint and/or Fedora ?
Currently, I have one PC with Ubuntu's GRUB2 managing multiple distros (openSUSE 11.3 and 11.4, Ubuntu, Linux Mint and Fedora) with Windows 7. I would like to replace it with the openSUSE GRUB, and the Ubuntu, LinuxMint and Fedora are rarely used.
