View 3 RepliesI have just reinstalled testing on a Samsung Q30 and I cant get X to start. I am just left with a blank screen and ctrl+alt+Fn does nothing. I had a previous install of testing that worked fine but it might have been running a previous version of the kernel, or I had installed a bug fix to do with 915resoultion that I can't remember about. Booting off a Slax live cd works fine but I have had similar problems with Knoppix and Ubuntu.
I am running LXDE but I previously tried Gnome and had the same problem. Running xander displays cant open display Running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg returns nothing, as does Xfree86 -configure There is no /etc/X11/xorg.conf or installed by default, I have tried running startx with a custom xorg.conf and the automatically generated one from -configure. The automatic one did not include any resolutions and was configured for a dual head set up although there was only one monitor connected.
I thought it may be the same problem as this:[url]
But I have tried following the bug fixes on that site and I have had no luck.

sudo speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twav
some friendly voice starts speaking as well.
But:

doesn't bring about anything sound-like.

What I did so far:
Installed imedia linux PCengines Alix build [URL] on an other Ubuntu machine with usb cf interface. This worked but I don't know how I can install Ubuntu from imedia linux.
Installed Ubuntu Server on the same Ubuntu machine. Installed the 386 kernel and changed the grub config file to enable the serial output to a terminal and updated grub[URL]. I created the file /etc/init/ttyS0.conf that the serial interface still works after the bootloader [URL].Unfortunately the alix board writes only "GRUB loading." and some empty lines.
Tried to boot with Tftpd32.exe by Ph. Jounin following this guide: [URL] So I set up a TFPT server following this german wiki: [URL]As advised changed /etc/inetd.conf and /etc/default/tftpd-hpa, prepared the boot image and the DHCP server. This should be enough on the server. I have to write N over the serial port to the board while it performs memory test to enable PXE boot. This was partly successful: it gets an IP adress but afterwards nothing happens. I can't find any error message in the syslog.
I attached my configuration files. As boot image I used [URL] and used the following commands to bring it into the right place:

I cannot install 11.3 on a machine with an intel raid controller I have tried with raid 1 using the card and then setting the disks to individual raid 0 and letting suse raid them. With the card doing it the machines crashes as soon as it tries to boot the first time, with suse doing the raid I just get 'GRUB' on the screen It seems a lot of people are having similar problems, does any one have any pointers. 11.2 installs fine. I would try and do a bug report but every time I go to the page it's in Czech

I am impressed with 11.4 and am happy that for the first time ever I don't need to install a kernel patch to support my on-board nVidia graphics. However, the on-board sound no longer works now. I don't know how to set it up in phonon. My device number 0 in phonon is MCP72XE/MCP72P/MCP78U/MCP78S high definition audio, and I assume this is my nVidia on-board sound card. The driver information states snd-hda-intel.
How can I check what is wrong with it? It did work fine on 11.2 right up to the 11.4 installation. I do get system sounds (like the start-up and shut-down sounds), but nothing from any application, e.g., firefox playing a video. Based on the advice from another thread I tried: speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twav This does not produce any sound, but gives the following information: speaker-test 1.0.24.2

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed OpenSUSE 11.3 last night and so far today I have had TWO Plasma crashes which leave the taskbar in a black color with stripes.
After the first one I located a post on the Web that said to do the following:
logout
Do CTRL-ALT-F1 (this does not work on my system at all, why?)
login
rm ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma*
CTRL-D to logout
CTRL-ALT-F7
Login
I did that and it did not fix the problem. I messed around with the desktop settings and somehow got the task bar back to gray.
Now during a copy of a large number of files from one disk to another with Dolphin, it crashed AGAIN.
So far 11.3 is proving a massive disappointment compared to the 11.0 I had on up to last night. Things are more complicated and clearly not as stable as KDE 3.5.x.
And I'm switching back to Konqueror as the default file manage because Dolphin appears to be unstable at doing a simple task like copying files without freezing.
I also hate the task notifier which during a copy pops up and covers my NoScript bar in Firefox.
do I have to switch to another distro? I really don't want to do that, but so far OpenSUSE 11.3 is a massive problem.
I have something crashing my system. It might be the random screensaver setting as it was an issue in 11.0 although I have not see it be an issue in 11.2. Previously I though my computer was shutting itself down and because of that I started this thread: opensuse 11.2 shutting down - openSUSE Forums
but now I know the issue is crashing it seems like I should start a separate thread as it's a completely different question. I guess I need to learn how to determine what caused a crash after I reboot a crashed system. So, other than blindly combing logs of which there are dozens, is there a smart methodical way to determine what is crashing a system after a restart? -- when you are not around to see what the cause is as it happens.
I have a strange problem that the X-Server freezes when I log out, switch to another virtual console or the like.
It works fine when I boot the kernel without xen.
The problem reduced to a very simple scenario:
* Boot Xen-Dom0-Kernel
* wait until the X11 display manager wants a login
* Press Alt+Ctrl+Fx
==> X11 freezes
I tried with kde4 and with xdm as display manager, both show the same problem. It does not happen when I boot with the XEN-less kernel.
I am using openSUSE 11.1 with all patches on AMD64 and the nvidia driver. 32bit is not a solution, this machine has 16GB Memory (which would be useless ...)
This issue is driving me nuts. I had manually modified the /etc/xorg.conf.d/50-device.conf to use intel driver, but for some unknown reason Xorg still uses framebuffer instead.
I though that I fixed the issue (by modifying device.conf) but its back after update.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have server with Xeon E5620, 8 GB RAM, three 1TB hard drives which are in sw RAID 5 and two 250GB disk which are in sw RAID 1, all of this on Intel S5500BC motherboard. Installation of opensuse 11.0 11.1 11.2 and Enterprise suse 11 was successfull. After grub menu i get blank screen. It`s blank for about 60 - 120 sec and then appear Suse loading page and loading bar. This also happens if i change to text mod. But in text mod i can see what`s going on. First 5-10 lines are informations about partitions and then i get output just like on this link. View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently decided to convert my old NAS gox from Gentoo to Unbuntu Server. For reasons that I do not understand I cannot install 10.04 or 11.04 on it. I've downloaded both the i386 and the AMD64 ISO images to the same machine, burned the the image on the same DVDRW drive onto the same CDRW disc but when I try to install on the D945GCLF board, it consistently fails at the same step - Unable to install base system.
The ISO image all indicate a good MD5 sum and I've burned the ISO image at the slowest possible rate. I've even tried moving the image onto a USB drive and installing from it - same error. The D945GCLF has parallel and serial ports disabled; I'm using the SATA drive for the OS and installing from a USB CDROM drive
I'm trying to load CentOS 5.5 on a new server with an Intel S5500BC motherboard using RAID 1. This board has a known problem with RHEL 5.x and the driver disk supplied has a fix. Here is the download for the driver [URL] Under the ESRT2_RHEL4-5_SLES9-1--11_v.13.21.2010_README file are directions in Section 3.1.3 on how to install the RHEL5x megasr driver. This works. The last thing replaces the ACHI driver with the megasr driver (paragraph 15) by loading the megasr.13.21.0614.2010-1-rhel50-u4-all.img in a temp file and then type "./replace_achi.sh". This step doesn't work and it is the critical one as it replaces the achi with megasr in the initrd image.

It crashes after it starts copying some files (immediately after formatting) at 18%/20%). I can't see the cause of this such a crash, I know it's a crash because I told it to restart on case. After updating some of my packages to the newer versions, I restarted my computer so that I could experience the full effect of the update. When I attempted to login, Plasma Workspace crashes and nothing loads. I am forced to use another window manager to login into the system, and when I investigated into this problem by typing plasma-desktop in the command terminal, I receive this error:

I am facing some issues with my openSUSE 11.2 installtion. Yesterday i installed win 7 so the grub is now wiped out. I have also taken mbr backup in USB. I tried following things to make things work.[/HTML]
1) Repair using openSUSE DVD booted using DVD then automatic repair but it couldn't find any root partition. After showing error that no root partition found it crashes to a blue screen with advanced configurations from there i was able to use shell but cant see and mount any linux partitions. i tried mounting the root partition it gave the error :"please load module ext4dev before mounting" how can i install grub without losing my present installations.
2) Tried booting with Ubuntu & kubuntu 8.04 live cd .. both gave a error and refused to boot. then tried openSolaris which failed to detect the USB drive so couldnt restore the GRUB to /dev/hda.
This has just been happening the last day or two. SOmetimes Google Chrome will go funny for a minute then the whole system will crash and give me the error "cannot start kmserver. check your installation".Like i said it's just the last day or two.

"/home" is on an separated partition (as part of an extended partition).

- I have an Laptop (Samsung x20) with integrated intel 915 graphic and an very hight resolution (1400x1050). The monitor's resolution is not listed in the bios of the graphic cart/solution. Because of that I had many problems with my fist installation of suse/openSuse linux.
- Will I have problems to keep my old accounts?
Pro new installation?:
- Sometimes funny system reports (mostly about ICE).
- I have been logged in as root in Gnome (as I had some problems with (no) audio, the digital optical audio out is still not running).
- I think the fist installation was a few years ago maybe I had been to often "bold".
If opensuse will run on a notebook with an Intel atom processor?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded my system from oS 11.2 to oS 11.3 on Thursday. I've chosen the network-CD and booted from an USB-pen-drive, as my netbook doesn't have a CD-drive.I new experience that my computer freezes obviously randomly. It's not just a programme crashing, but the whole computer just halts. Nothings working anymore - mouse is not moving, keyboard doesn't respond, I can't even switch to another tty.I tried to remember what I was doing right before the crashes. Once I used the new netbook-desktop of KDE and had typed for an application in that "cool" new desktop. The desktop wend "blank" (the application folders disappeared and I was waiting till the results were shown) and then the computer froze. Just right now I used Okular, selected some text and opened the context-menu when the computer died, the other time I closed the Yakuake with F12 and the computer didn't respond just right before the window was minimized at the top and last but not least I had that "Expose"-like window arrangement opened and clicked at the black background when everything hang up.
What could be the reason for it? oS 11.2 worked perfectly - I hadn't had any crash during 5 months of intense use. I suspected the new graphics driver, but I can't find any reported bug about the Intel 945 GMA* or anything about the new KDE 4.4.4 on atom processors.
I installed 11.3 Gnome 32 bit in my system twice after couple logins and updates the system freezes. I can't use keybord etc. Only option is Power off/on. It happens either during boot/during usage randomly. I posted my issue in this forum and implemented the suggestion but after couple of reboots, now it won't boot, not even in safemode. So I have decided to Install again. In the same machine I have installed Ubuntu and it's working fine without any problems from 1 week.

I am running Opensuse 11.4 on a file server, based on an Intel Atom motherboard with 945G graphics chipset.I recently shut down and then rebooted the server (because I needed to switch off the power for a few minutes) after it had had been running quite happily for several weeks since the last boot. I am downloading the 64-bit image of Ubuntu 9.10 right now, but I notice the filename has "amd64" in it. Will it only work on 64-bit AMD processors? I want to install it onto an enterprise-class server with a 64-bit Intel Xeon processor.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Biostar TA785GE which as I understand it, has a Realtek 8111DL on-board.
Booting with the default label from the 64-bit installation DVD crashes before any user input, with indecipherable text on-screen (text mode, not X11). Symptoms were the same with the Fedora 11 32-bit installation DVD and the Fedora 12 Live 32-bit CD. Booting with "linux text" mode shows a kernel panic in ":r8169:rtl8169_init_one+0x369/0x9d4" from "pci_device_probe+0x100/0x180".
Disabling the on-board NIC allowed the boot to proceed, and get as far as detecting the hard drive partitions (where I stopped it since Ubuntu is installed).
Ubuntu 9.04 Workstation(Desktop?) install DVD worked fine, and I've installed it and am using it to enter this. From Ubuntu 9.04 on this hardware:
- "uname -r" shows
