This has just been happening the last day or two. SOmetimes Google Chrome will go funny for a minute then the whole system will crash and give me the error "cannot start kmserver. check your installation".Like i said it's just the last day or two.

My normal windowing operations are fine. I have no problems running parallel kde desktop sessions (1 user, 1 root), switching back and forth with ease. I have been able to get vnc remote connections to work, but the only desktop environment I can get to run twm. When I try to start kde it fails with:

I've read several related vnc threads. It appears to me I have a more general X11 setup failure, but at this point I'm lost.
LIVECD of 11.3 Gnome works fine in my old PC. I installed several times and each time system freezes/crashes during boot. I am linux newbie, so, I am trying to figure out my problems. View 3 Replies View RelatedEarly in the boot process, system generates message "Creating nodes with udev." After a pause, CPU timeout dumps are listed on the display. Likely it is related to wthe display driver (Intel 845G) as the system can be brought up in failsafe mode. /etc/X11.conf is intact. The system was apparently successfully upgraded online from 11.3 using the zypper method. This issue has appeared a day following the upgrade, after restarting the 11.4 system.

I did a fresh install of SuSE 11.4 (WIN7 TOO) and changed my Larger HD1 to the first HD. I am not able to install 11.3 x86_64 on an OCZ 120 GB Agility 2 SSD. I receive a system error -3030 when it tries to format the drive. If I use go into rescue mode and either format or partition the drive, the installer crashes.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSeveral months ago I installed Suse on my box...setup a dual boot with Windows XP. By default it booted into Suse. The problem is that the company I work for, not a science company, is VERY windows-centric, so nearly everything I do is in windows. The IT people here periodically reboot the computers which creates a problem for me since I often work remotely and this results in my computer booting into Linux.

I am not sure as to why but rhythmbox actually freezes the system. I am unable to get into another desktop by pressing control-alt-F1, F2 etc. I am not sure how to diagnose this problem. The window loads, and then the system just crashes. According to the software Manager I am using version 0.12.8-1.43
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen i shutdown my SuSE 11.2 box with all current updates i have started to notice an error message.Something about failed to unmount, trying remount as read only or something like that.The trouble is its almost the very last message that appears and its not on the screen long enough to read properly.Somewhere is there a logfile that i can recover this error message from so that i can make some sort of an attempt to resolve the issue, post the whole message here in more detail?

I've tried three or four variations of the process and each time I see, "Error Loading Operating System."I've reloaded the live cd and examined /boot/grub/menu.lst. It appears to be correct. It seems like the initial GRub loader isn't found in the MBR.If I run grub-install, the graphical interface comes up then complains, "Because of partitioning, the boot loader cannot be installed properly."

I have removed and re-installed and get the same crash.
I have a big problem with my home router / server. The symptom is an alomst complete death. The other computers in the house can use the internet, i.e., the PC is not completely dead, but actually routes. However, it suspends all direct traffic: SSH becomes irresponsive, SMB shares disappear, and so on. It cuts traffic even with a VMWare guest it runs. I can ping it, but that's about it.The worrying thing is that it starts slowly. In the beginning it will start by cutting SMB pipes. It will then become very slow, to the point it won't execute a "shutdown" command.Then I sometimes have flood on port X, "sending cookies". That is certainly due to the P2P program, but cold a sustained flood affect communications on the virtual network adapter vmnet8?And then it enters this catatonic state with no special mention on the log.
View 5 Replies View RelatedUpgraded from 11.2 to 11.3 without any issues. However the newer version of Firefox keeps crashing and bringing down 11.3! It's a complete system crash with absolutely no warning, although it looks like 11.3 is trying to send the TERM signal before the pc shuts down.I have other browsers for my work, and both Opera and SeaMonkey work perfectly.Konquerer also works perfectly.

I deleted the Windows partitions and created a new partition scheme: Swap, root and one additional partition on the first disk, one large partition on the second disk. Install runs fine but upon reboot I get "Error loading operating system". Booting off a Windows floppy and running FDisk shows that the root partition is marked as active.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a single boot system that was working great until this morning when it locked up. I was working as I always do when the system stopped responding completely. CTRL+F1 did not work to allow me into the back so I could log in and see what was happening.
CTRL+SHIFT+SysRq did not recover the system or interrupt what ever was causing the lock up.

So I had to do a hard boot and when I did I got this:

Again this is a single boot system no Windows other than in VMWare inside the install. It is a multi drive with RAID set up workstation that I have at work. The short of it I am sole IT support as our companies ITS will not support Linux. In 5 years of operations with Linux at work this is my first issue, and I can't figure it out. I already tried the PartedMagic solution (ref = Re-Install Grub Quickly with Parted Magic) and that didn't work.
I re-installed the system completely even going to the extent to change my partition scheme just to make sure that wasn't the problem (which doesn't make sense as the system had been running for 46 days non-stop without a problem). Upon reboot after performing a complete security update I got the Error 17 message again.

So this happens before the boot manager... When I press the reboot button it goes to the boot manager and works seemingly fine - all I noticed that it doesn't remember the time, or better remembered the time form the last usage but doesn't count it forward. While using the time seems to pass in a normal speed.
What could this be? Some chip on the mainboard broken? Some BIOS virus (does something like that exist?) Or maybe just a cable which got lose?
I don't know which other informations could be helpful. I built it myself some years ago and the parts are pretty random (back then I didn't even know about linux compatibility nor used it at all). I have a dual boot with openSUSE 11.2 and windows xp, but the network card is deactived in xp for a year at least already.
Im probally just being a noob here but for the projects sake I thought it would be good to identify this problem. I have an old advent laptop and I tried to install Opensuse from DVD on it. I followed the installation as normal but when I tried to boot it said some sort of check was forced and then I have to enter the admin/root password upon doing this I got the message system repair # in red. I have tried to repair the system through the installation DVD and tried re-installing it but I still get the same message.

I was using Fedora 9 until about 1 month ago when my hard drive crashed. I installed F12 on a new hard drive last week. Due to some other software issues (empathy), I decided I should try to get the latest updates. PackageKit kept giving errors and would not update. So, I researched and found that I needed to run " su -c 'yum update' " for the first update then PackageKit would work. I did this and after about an hour of updating, the screen went black. Nothing you can do at that point but hard reboot.
When I did that, I could only get a "GRUB" command line. I played with it for a minute but really I have no idea what to do with GRUB cmd (beyond my experience level). So I decided to wipe it out and reinstall F12. I did that, and was just working thru the updates again. Same thing happened, went to black screen. I have not rebooted it yet, but Im sure when I do, it will be GRUB again. What in the world am I supposed to do with this? I am not a Linux star, but I have been using it for around 8 years now with various distros, so I would say I have at least moderate experience.
Since having installed Lucid Lynx, I have several complete system crashes a day, no matter which applications I am using. Lucid crashes without any error message and the system reboots. I have had no problem whatsoever with Karmic Koala (also switched from ext2 to ext4 when installing Lucid Lynx). Is there any probable reason for that or a workaround? Can I paste any logs here for anybody to figure out what might be going on? When I try XP which is also install, the system won't crash (so far...), so I don't think it's a hardware problem.

My computers have;
- Intel Pentium Dual Core processors
- Asus motherboards
- Onboard VGA, Sound, NW
- 2 GB DDR2 RAM
- 80 GB SATA HDD

What happens is, the first screen appear (where it instructs to press DEL to go to BIOS), then the system hangs us displaying "Error Loading Operating System". There nothing works, except the CTRL+ALT+DEL. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL, same cycle repeats.
I have a native 64 bit 11.3 system with vmware 7.0x as an application. I have installed a win 7 guest which works fine 99% of the time. But if I try to plug usb headphones into my system after I boot win 7, it will crash entire system, but if I plug headphones into system before loading vmware, this does not happen. Is this a kernel issue?
View 1 Replies View RelatedIt started when I wanted to dual boot Windows 7 and Opensuse off of my netbook (No DVD/CD drive) I tried install suse from an external hard drive and I botched it. I ended up erasing EVERYTHING off of my internal netbook hard drive. Windows and all.
Well, I had a couple of other computers so I studied up and eventually successfully installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on my external hard drive (11.3 being the one that I accidentally erased everything with, so kinda scared of it) and now I want to install openSUSE 11.2 on my internal netbook hard drive.
I can not use disks
I can not use a flash drive (For some reason, even if I make it bootable, it will not load up, this could be because it's actually a 8GB microSD card that is placed in a USB card reader.)
I can not use an external hard drive because that's what I'm running suse off of.
I've tried reading up on how to install suse on another drive off of the hard drive and I've gotten as far as whenever I boot up the netbook with the suse external hard drive connected it will ask to boot into OpenSUSE, the Fail Safe, or to install OpenSuse. When I select to install it it gives me the Error 18 Unknown File system.
I've tried formatting the internal hard drive twice. One as NTFS and again as EXT4. Neither seems to effect it other than when it's ext4 I can open it and it contains a Lost and Found folder.
When I interrupt the boot sequence by pressing c and going to the terminal and I use the root (hd +TAB command it tells me I have a hd0 and a hd1. The hd1 only has 1 partition which is ext4, which I'm assuming hd1 is the internal hard drive (I'm not sure how to check) and the hd0 is the external hard drive, which has three partitions. One with an unknown file system and two with ext4. When I try to enter the set up from the terminal it gives me the same error for any thing I put it (e.g. root (hd0,0) gives the same error as root (hd0,1), or root (hd0,2) and root (hd1,0)
Something like it cannot locate these two files I'm assuming it needs to boot. If anyone finds this relevant I'll retry it and post the files its missing.

I just installed OpenSUSE 11.3 last night and so far today I have had TWO Plasma crashes which leave the taskbar in a black color with stripes.
After the first one I located a post on the Web that said to do the following:
logout
Do CTRL-ALT-F1 (this does not work on my system at all, why?)
login
rm ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma*
CTRL-D to logout
CTRL-ALT-F7
Login
I did that and it did not fix the problem. I messed around with the desktop settings and somehow got the task bar back to gray.
Now during a copy of a large number of files from one disk to another with Dolphin, it crashed AGAIN.
So far 11.3 is proving a massive disappointment compared to the 11.0 I had on up to last night. Things are more complicated and clearly not as stable as KDE 3.5.x.
And I'm switching back to Konqueror as the default file manage because Dolphin appears to be unstable at doing a simple task like copying files without freezing.
I also hate the task notifier which during a copy pops up and covers my NoScript bar in Firefox.
do I have to switch to another distro? I really don't want to do that, but so far OpenSUSE 11.3 is a massive problem.
I have something crashing my system. It might be the random screensaver setting as it was an issue in 11.0 although I have not see it be an issue in 11.2. Previously I though my computer was shutting itself down and because of that I started this thread: opensuse 11.2 shutting down - openSUSE Forums
but now I know the issue is crashing it seems like I should start a separate thread as it's a completely different question. I guess I need to learn how to determine what caused a crash after I reboot a crashed system. So, other than blindly combing logs of which there are dozens, is there a smart methodical way to determine what is crashing a system after a restart? -- when you are not around to see what the cause is as it happens.
I have a strange problem that the X-Server freezes when I log out, switch to another virtual console or the like.
It works fine when I boot the kernel without xen.
The problem reduced to a very simple scenario:
* Boot Xen-Dom0-Kernel
* wait until the X11 display manager wants a login
* Press Alt+Ctrl+Fx
==> X11 freezes
I tried with kde4 and with xdm as display manager, both show the same problem. It does not happen when I boot with the XEN-less kernel.
I am using openSUSE 11.1 with all patches on AMD64 and the nvidia driver. 32bit is not a solution, this machine has 16GB Memory (which would be useless ...)
