Ubuntu Servers :: Unable To Install Server On Intel D945GCLF?
Aug 7, 2011
I recently decided to convert my old NAS gox from Gentoo to Unbuntu Server. For reasons that I do not understand I cannot install 10.04 or 11.04 on it. I've downloaded both the i386 and the AMD64 ISO images to the same machine, burned the the image on the same DVDRW drive onto the same CDRW disc but when I try to install on the D945GCLF board, it consistently fails at the same step - Unable to install base system.
The ISO image all indicate a good MD5 sum and I've burned the ISO image at the slowest possible rate. I've even tried moving the image onto a USB drive and installing from it - same error. The D945GCLF has parallel and serial ports disabled; I'm using the SATA drive for the OS and installing from a USB CDROM drive

I purchased a Sony Vaio with an Intel I3 Processor. I tried to install Ubuntu 9.1 via the CD in Windows.
It loads, then when rebooting into Ubuntu... Nothing.
I tried to boot off the CD and it boots until I click install.. Then nothing.
I tried to install from a flash drive... nothing...

I've got a hankering to upgrade my home PBX from Trixbox on CentOS to SipXecs on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
The current Trixbox setup is running on a Gigabyte G33M-S2 with 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 duo (There ain't no kill, like overkill). My needs are... ahem... modest, to say the least. The user base is currently five (5) people (all family members)... and would never grow beyond 10.
So, the Intel Atom D525 looks like I could cut down on power consumption. I'm thinking of going with the Gigabyte version found here [url]
If it works out well, I'm thinking of moving my email server (currently on Qmail, and showing its age) to a D525 board, and switching to Postfix.
Has anyone had any thoughts, experiences (good or bad), and/or "gotchas" with the Atom boards as a server (no gui).

im having problems finalizing the installation of fedora 10 on a new ASUS P5E-VM that uses Intel G35 chipset.
1. i think fedora did not recognize the video driver since all the installation was in text mode and i cannot use "init 5" to load a UI
2. i tried to find some drivers (if any1 can recommend a rpm that i can download i will apprichiate it very much) but could not transfer them to the fedora since i could not mount any USB disk on key in the linux i tried using: mount -t vfat /mnt/usb (after mkdir /mnt/usb)
3. i tried to burn the driver but then could not access the dvd...
4. no internet connection yet... but thats because i cannot access my network drives that are on the USB key as well...

I am trying to install Ubuntu server edition on an old HP XT963 that recently came into my possession. I mainly just wanted to use it as a home file server and print server. I have been running ubuntu desktop on my laptop for a little under a year, but this is my first go at the server edition.
While ubuntu was installing it said "network autoconfiguration failed," I hit continue, thinking I could figure out how to configure it later. After lots of googling I still haven't figured out what exactly is wrong.
Code:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopack
after googling around I made it look like:
[Code]...
I would like to provide more information such as ifconfig and any other commands but I'm not exactly sure how I would do that without being able to copy/paste. I guess I would have the command dump the output to a file, but I'm not familiar with the -options this being my first time CLI-only.

I own a MB with H55 Chipset and a Core i3 540 with openSuse 11.2.I tried kernel 2.6.32 and 2.6.34 and the newest Xorg delete the xorg.conf and got a fine picture on the screen (same with xorg.conf and device "intel") Even HD MKV is possible. But in KDE I can only open one programm. If I try to open a second programm the desktop disappear and I get the KDM screen and have to login again and the former started programm is gone. Only if I start the programms via an open Terminal window the programms will run. I tried to delete all .kde(x) directories, but its the same after restart.Only if I use driver "fbdev" in the xorg.conf I get no problem. But then the screen is very slow.

I am downloading the 64-bit image of Ubuntu 9.10 right now, but I notice the filename has "amd64" in it. Will it only work on 64-bit AMD processors? I want to install it onto an enterprise-class server with a 64-bit Intel Xeon processor.

I'm having a problem connecting to my server with ssh.I'm running the latest Ubuntu 9.10 32-bit server, inside a virtual machine on a Mac (VMware Fusion 3, running on OS X 10.6.2 with 64-bit kernel).I've set up a network interface (eth2) to act as a host-only network between the virtual machine and the host.I can ssh into the server from my Mac when I type in its IP address ssh root@[IP address] BUT, I can not connect to the server.do I need to open a port with ufw? or configure something else in the ssh settings?

I have just reinstalled testing on a Samsung Q30 and I cant get X to start. I am just left with a blank screen and ctrl+alt+Fn does nothing. I had a previous install of testing that worked fine but it might have been running a previous version of the kernel, or I had installed a bug fix to do with 915resoultion that I can't remember about. Booting off a Slax live cd works fine but I have had similar problems with Knoppix and Ubuntu.
I am running LXDE but I previously tried Gnome and had the same problem. Running xander displays cant open display Running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg returns nothing, as does Xfree86 -configure There is no /etc/X11/xorg.conf or installed by default, I have tried running startx with a custom xorg.conf and the automatically generated one from -configure. The automatic one did not include any resolutions and was configured for a dual head set up although there was only one monitor connected.
I thought it may be the same problem as this:[url]
But I have tried following the bug fixes on that site and I have had no luck.

I'm currently trying to use preseed to build an ubuntu server box over the network. I'm using the netboot.tar.gz from the karmic main mirror. By default it installs the standard kernel (linux-2.6.31-16-generic), and I want to use the server kernel (the metapackage linux-server which should install linux-image-2.6.31-16-server). I'm using a minimal build:
Code:
tasksel tasksel/first multiselect minimal As far as I can see all the other preseed settings are close to defaults. I've tried setting both of the following lines (separately and together) with no effect:
Code:
d-i base-installer/kernel/image string linux-server
d-i base-installer/kernel/override-image string linux-server
Once the machine is built, if I run:

I am a total noob in the process of trying to build my own server. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 but when I did that I didn't have the computer hooked up with an ethernet or have any internet connection. During the installation process it was unable to set up DHCP, so I figured I would just do that later, somehow.
Anyways, I recently hooked up an ethernet cable from the server to another computer, which has internet.
I've been slowly working my way through the Server Documentation and am on the Networking chapter. It has given me the commands to install wireless-tools, ethtool, dhcp3 server and I've also tried to install gedit. Every time it gives me the error: E: Unable to locate package XXX
When I ran the sudo lshw -class network command I find that it recognizes both an ethernet interface as well as a wireless interface(my wireless adapter). BOTH of them say *-network DISABLED.
My goal is to enable both of those, but I am assuming I need to be able to locate the packages first. I installed the server edition using a USB pendrive. I still have the files on the pendrive, but I don't know how to make the server locate those files. I'm guessing it wants to access the installation files to locate the packages to install.

I currently have to connect to my new samba fileserver using servernameusername instead of just username, if that makes sense(!) I need this to be simplified, as I've had it before on a previous machine, as one of the devices I connect with has a virtual keyboard without a backslash!

You are running tftpd as an on demand server i.e. it is only fired up when it is needed. Services run by xinetd are always run on demand. Have you actually tested if tftp on another system can access your PC i.e.

This may sound a bit odd, but after installing Ubuntu Server 9.10 64-bit version, I can't seem to log in with the root account that I created. My user account works fine. I thought that I may have fat fingered the password when I created it so I ran the installer again since it takes very little time to do so. When creating the new root account password, I was very careful to type it correctly. After the install was complete, I am still unable to use the root account. I'm unable to SU from my normal user account, too. I just receive the Login incorrect error. Is there something with using root accounts with Ubuntu server that I'm missing?

I have setup a home based web server to host a photo blog for myself and my friends. I will be running wordpress and possibly a phpbb3 forum. I'd like to open this to discuss server administration, server setup, and server maintenance. However, I have a pretty good start on all of those but serving a domain name to my static ip. Here my static ip is 24.10.202.144. I registered a domain through [URL]... It appears that I have the domain working to forward to my ip. However, I am still getting this output file from apache.
[code]...
I have tested the domain name across a few different computers on different ips. It works appropriately. I just want to make sure I have it set correctly on the (apache) server side of things. Then I can get more into Zone Editing etc.

I am trying to install either Ubuntu or CentOS server in text mode only. The problem I am having is that the hardware that I am trying to install it on has no vga output, I can only connect to it via console cable. I am able to boot from USB CDROm or flash drive but unfortunately since the hardware does not have a gpu (atleast none that I'm aware of) I am unable to get past the boot screen. If someone can point me in the right direction or know where I would be able to download the text install of either OS, that would be awesome.

Since Karmic has come out, this chipset crashes Ubuntu and, months later, this has not been fixed. (See bug #456902). So I had to re-install Ubuntu 9.04. Thinking this was a Ubuntu problem, I went out and bought a Linux magazine with a Fedora 12 inside. This was after I had downloaded the same distro but couldn't get the install going because of the proverbial chipset. After re-installing 9.04, after I installed Fedora 12 twice, I am now back to a crappier display then the one I had when I decided to "upgrade" to Ubuntu Karmic in November.I cannot afford a new computer nor Windows 7.

1. Sometimes when I try to shutdown my computer the display becomes filled with pixels of different colors as shown in the image (The problem is very random so I was not able to take a photo, I tried to recreate the effect using GIMP). Then the display turns off (Analog power saving mode) But my system never turns off.
2. While working on my computer the display sometimes goes kaput and blinks as in the second image. It stops responding completely I am not even able to go to terminal (Ctrl + Alt + F1). Leaving me with no option but to use the reset button. Causing me to loose all the work in progress.
3. Firefox responds very slowly upon closing it takes 5-6 seconds for the window to close.
PS:- KMS is also disabled in my system. Enabling it didn't improve stability. and here is the output of my videocard (lshw)
