Feb 11, 2011I'm dual-booting Windows 7 and Suse 11.3, installing suse second on a seperate 80GB drive. After a ridiculous amount of faffing around due to my dvd writer essentially not working, finally get suse installed, messing with GRUB settings in an attempt to preserve Windows' boot manager, restart; GRUB error 22.
Go through the whole process again, this time accepting the use of grub and not changing anything from default - exactly the same response. None of the tens of boot disks/utilities I've tried will allow me into suse to have a look at the grub config. There are no applications for windows that will allow me to write to ext3.

Nov 30, 2009I have installed 11.2 with English as default language. During the installation, I tried to change the default keyboard mapping to Spanish, but right now, when the system boots it uses an English mapping. I've seen there is an option to change that on the grub menu and I would like it to default to Spanish. Is it possible? I haven't found much info on the web, but my guess is that changing the DEFAULT_APPEND in /etc/sysconfig/bootloader with an unknown-keyboard-related option will solve it.

I tried to figure out how to configure GRUB (with yast2 bootloader) to boot from MBR and read kernel from LVM, but without any luck. It still boots from firts disk's boot partition.

Aug 29, 2010Under Windows XP in the C Drive, I've downloaded PLoP boot manager to force the USB boot. I've tried about a thousand things and I get a different error message at different times from each attempt. I've got all of those documented, and I imagine I'll need to post them. I'm just not doing it quite yet as sometimes I give too much information and I really feel that I'm being an idiot here, missing something simple.
I'd like to install openSUSE onto the D Drive, using the USB and PLoP to boot it. I've downloaded openSUSE's torrents for all iso's (Net, DVD and LiveKDE). In order to get those files onto the USB, I first format to FAT32. I've tried UNetBootIn, LiLi, and mounting the iso on Daemon Tools and then copy-paste into the hard drive. None of these work and they all give different errors.Is this even possible, am I wasting my time? This is getting incredibly frustrating as I've been at it for nearly a week.

Dec 14, 2010my linux pc is connected to a lcd monitor with native resolution 1280x1024.The font at the textconsoles is too small for me.
I changed the entry "vga=..."in the file /boot/grub/menu.lst to "vga=0x0314".During the first few seconds the screen-resolution matches the setting of the vga-mode, but after then the vga-mode automatically switches to 1280x1024 (only at the textconsoles).The x-server is configured to 800x600 which is the resolution I want.I also tried vga=normal and vga=788. In older suse-version 10 and lower never had this problem.
OpenSUSE Install :: Grub Not Using Saved Boot Option?
Jun 21, 2010After giving it my best shot, I had to give up and finally decide that I need "acpi=off" added to the kernel line in grub. I have done so, saved it:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31.12-0.2-default root=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST950212A_5LE02797-part1
pci=noacpi
I have tried "acpi=off" "pci=noacpi". But on boot the system totally ignores this and loads the acpi support from the kernal, which shut down the USB ports. Where is this option used in Suse so that the kernel will recognize on each boot?

I had duel boot option for vista and opensuse now after switching on vista starts by default and I am not having any option for choosing one of them as I had before.

Dec 5, 2009I already had windows installed on the c drive so linux suse 11.2 has been installed onto d. There was a problem after I finished the install - after I rebooted no menu appeared, the pc just hung on a black screen with flashing cursor, so I put the linux DVD in again and rain a repair. It repaired the boot menu but now there is no option to boot into windows.

Dec 17, 2010I've installed opensuse 11.3 on my computer (well actually Ive done it twice, once with full DVD image and once with network install). Everything was OK until Ive made update (yast/software/online update <-- BTW kupdate applet isn't working, just update bar appear and stuck on 0%). i haven't installed any additional packages, only the defaults (KDE desktop). after update only fail safe option is working (booting normally and looks like normal desktop, no visual differences between normal and fail safe booting, if there should been any). When I've tried to find solution for this problem, very ofter answers were -> graphic drivers problem (im using ati hd 4670 AGP <-- yea, AGP . well when i start normal boot green screen with lizard logo appear, then screen goes black for a second or two, then the green screen come again, and after another few second screen goes black permanently with working hdd for 30-40 second (hdd led blinking) BTW i have windows7 pro (booting fine) on this machine too, it was installed as first system on hd0,0. opensuse was installed on stand alone PATA disk (secondary EIDE master, ODD on slave). how to gather info which u all need to get this problem more detailed. Sep 13, 2010I'll be dual booting Fedora and Windows 7. I'll be doing a lot of remote work (SSH/VNC). But, I would like to be able to switch between Fedora and Windows remotely.For instance, if my home computer was currently booted up to Fedora, and I was at work using VNC, I would like to be able to tell the computer to restart, but start up to Windows so that I could do remote on Windows (and vice-versa).Is this possible? It seems like it should be, I just don't know the best way to go about it. It seems like maybe a simple program could be written, that when run would just do a quick rewrite of the config file for the bootloader.

I would like to leave the machine as dual boot, but make UNR the default boot OS, so that I don't have to babysit the machine and choose UNR every time I reboot the machine. BTW, I am delighted with UNR! What a great OS. Really like how it plays so nicely with Firefox. And much faster than Win 7.

Jan 24, 2010I am testing some boot splash screens but the ones I like most are darker and therefore the black font color during boot, well, shows on dark grey or black background, so I can't see.
I would like to change the font color of the messages, but not the results (green=DONE, red=FAILED, etc., I don't want to change that, only the messages like "doing fast boot", "Loading CPUfreq", and all the ones loading stuff, mounting, etc.).
Apparently I need to edit /lib/lsb/init-functions?
I found a few examples on google, mostly for debian based and the ones I have seen are far more complex than the very simple one opensuse uses. So I am stuck here. 11.2 version.

I basically wanted grub to not pop-up and just boot the default version of Ubuntu. Also the boot loader comes up with the options to boot Windows and OS X and I was wondering if it would be possible to remove those from the list as well?

Oct 3, 2010I've installed Windows 7 Ultimate on a notebook which previously ran Vista. No problems there.I've now installed Ubuntu (now updated to 10.04)so that it can boot to either OS.
It all works fine and when I first power up, I get a screen which invites me to select the OS I want to use. There are however two problems:
1) it defaults to Ubuntu (whereas I would prefer it to default to Windows 7 (it's a work laptop and most of the applications are Windows-specific),
2) the list of choices is getting increasingly complex with an expanding list of choices (with each major update of Ubuntu adding more); it even seems to include an option to go back to Vista!As long as I move down the list and make the right selection quite speedily, I get to where I want to be (though, as I say, I would like to change the default option).Is there any way I can edit/shorten this list without damaging the functionality and how can I change that default?

Mar 25, 2011i changed the boot up resolution in the boot up loader to 1366*768 (native res of my monitor) the boot option is still set to quiet splash however, instead of showing the progress bar, it would now always display the complete boot up log ( the list of starting services and such) i then manually changed the boot option from to 1024*768 at boot loader screen, and teh splash would show up, but then on next boot up if i stick with 1366*768, it doesnt work again

Aug 13, 2010I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 from earlier versions. I have a dual boot system with Windows 7. Grub was set to boot Windows by default Things were working fine. I decided to upgrade to Grub2. It seemed like a good idea at the time. Now when booting up,the name at the top of the Grub menu is 1.98, which is Grub 2. When I run grub-install -v, it comes back grub-install (GNU GRUB 0.97) which is not Grub2. Now when I boot up, Ubuntu 10.04 is the default. I have to manually choose Windows if I want to use that system. I have been unable to change the boot order following instructions from this site. Any Way changing the boot order to make Windows 7 the default. I am using a Toshiba Satellite.

Jun 24, 2010i downloaded backtrack 4 (final) and booted the iso onto a flash drive using unetbootin. i then changed the boot order so the flash drive was first. after i did that i got into backtrack 4 did the install.sh and now i cant boot windows 7. even after changing the boot order to default, i turn my computer on and get a message that says:
