Debian :: Set Default Character Encoding In Gnome-terminal?
Dec 30, 2010I try to change the default character encoding in gnome-terminal. I want to use UTF8, but every gnome-terminal i start uses "ANSIX3.4-1968".
In the menu, when i go in Terminal => Set character encoding i have a list with two items:
[x] Current Locale (ANSIX3.4-1968)
[ ] Unicode (UTF-8)
I don't know why the first item appears, i have another debian box and it has only the UTF-8 encoding available. I cannot remove the first item in "add or remove" sub menu !! Probably because it is related to "current locale"
Here is the output of "locale", if it can helps:

Fedora :: Change XFCE4 Character Encoding?
Jun 28, 2009I am experiencing some difficulties accessing some of my drives which have folders/files whose names include special characters. That problem has appeared just now, in Fedora 11, and just in XFCE4 (it somehow got stuck with the English default). In neither GNOME nor KDE happens.
The problem is not narrowed down to Thunar because even the terminal fails to recognize the special characters in XFCE4.
I guess that is simply solved by editing some configuration file, but I can't seem to find it.
What do I need to do to allow XFCE4 recognize special characters?
EDIT: It's definitely XFCE4, because if I open Thunar or xterm from GNOME, they recognize special-characters-filenames very well.
Fedora Servers :: Apache And Character Encoding Using UTF-8?
Oct 14, 2009I am having a problem with my web server. On index.html, it should say "Welcome to my website! More coming soon!" but instead, in Firefox, if I go through my server by going to eggbertx.linium.net or localhost, it shows this:

I know it isn't the file, because the file looks normal if I open it by going to /var/www/html/index.html I looked at /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and it says that it is using UTF-8, which I'm pretty sure is normal. I don't remember it doing this before I installed kdewebdev and ran Quanta Plus, although I have no idea how it could have caused this. Has this happened to anyone else?
Fedora :: Change Character Encoding In Either 12 Or PCBSD?
Feb 10, 2010I have two machines in a local network and want to share files among them. Since I don't want to bother configuring NFS right now I am using ssh and scp to transfer files among them. There is a little problem though: the machines have different *nixes. One machine has Fedora 12 (Spanish) and the other one has PCBSD 7.1.1 (English).The problem is that both machines have different character encoding and while the Fedora machine can perfectly handle names with special characters, the BSD machine can't and in fact upon doing ssh to the Fedora machine filenames (with special characters) appear wrong and prove difficult to work with.

Jun 11, 2010In W7 and WXP when you tried to open an image or non-text file using notepad, the software would guess at the character encoding and show a bunch of gibberish. this allowed you to edit the image to make it corrupt or (what I am trying to do) hide a message or text within an image file and still have the image display. Is there any way to do this with gedit or another text editor in the repositories? I'd prefer to not use a command line text editor such as vim or emacs.

I downloaded the self installer with java *moneydance_linux_x86wj.sh* from their site as they recommended but when I try to install all I get is a Gedit error :- gedit has not been able to detect the character encoding. Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file. Select a character encoding from the menu and try again.

I would like to change it to my Groupwise client. Googling the problem, I found that I should be able to enter a custom command there for a new entry but there is no custom option. Feb 11, 2011I'm dual-booting Windows 7 and Suse 11.3, installing suse second on a seperate 80GB drive. After a ridiculous amount of faffing around due to my dvd writer essentially not working, finally get suse installed, messing with GRUB settings in an attempt to preserve Windows' boot manager, restart; GRUB error 22.
Go through the whole process again, this time accepting the use of grub and not changing anything from default - exactly the same response. None of the tens of boot disks/utilities I've tried will allow me into suse to have a look at the grub config. There are no applications for windows that will allow me to write to ext3.

During the installation, I tried to change the default keyboard mapping to Spanish, but right now, when the system boots it uses an English mapping. I've seen there is an option to change that on the grub menu and I would like it to default to Spanish. Is it possible? I haven't found much info on the web, but my guess is that changing the DEFAULT_APPEND in /etc/sysconfig/bootloader with an unknown-keyboard-related option will solve it.

Sep 28, 2010I was using ubuntu 10.04 till yesterday.. and due to hdd crash i have changed my hdd.
while looking for my installation disc, my wall-mate gives me this Ubuntu Studio dvd and instead of downloading a new one, i have installed the studio. at the first sight ... i am being a fond of studio version .. its really cool.
now, i am quite habituated with default appearance of ubuntu, i found studio appearance is quite unusual (for me, menu layouts, panel everything).
I would like to know how do i change this default appearance like ubuntu default 10.04 appearance. I am attaching a screen-shoot of my friends desktop, he upgraded his ubuntu thru apptitude update.

Jan 22, 2011I am using 11.2, KDE 4.3.5 with Grip and Flac to rip and encode CDs. Two questions:- Have read flac -help and do not understand the -o option which is used in a few example threads. The man page suggests that -o should be used with subsequent parameters such as --output_name=FILENAME for example. In the example posts this general option is used on its own. What for?
The installation when first used, already had a string of options including --best on the command line. I cannot find any documentation for this. I assume it is a preset in the same way as for example --preset extreme in lame.

Sound for a DVD is normally encoded with AC3. I encountered some cases where the encoded sound was badly distorted. As it seems, the default for the input changed to float at some point. The fix for this is to use:

Debian :: Changing Default User
Mar 22, 2016I'd like to know if there's a reliable way to change the default user in Debian: when I installed testing starting from Jessie, I used rsync to set up a duplicate stable installation and then upgraded it to testing, as a result I now have the same username for both installations, which is sometimes kinda confusing.
Reading around a bit, looks like you can indeed change your username with relative ease, but then there will be always something left behind somewhere still pointing at the old username: is that the case?
Fedora :: Changing Default App (ie Caliber)
Oct 4, 2010After finally installing Caliber E book Management, I realized it made itself the default App for my CBR and CBZ files (these are just renamed rar and zip files used for digital comics)
I tried right clicking and choosing -open with- Other Application and checked the "remember this application" after making Archive Manager the default; but when I click on a cbr and cbz file, caliber still start off.
What is the preferable way of changing the default application for a file type?

Jan 15, 2010I am attempting to modify the default umask value under all accounts on my linux system to 002. This will hopefully allow both the account and the account's group access to the created files.
I have modified it within /etc/bashrc, however it seems to be making no difference on this default value. The files I create through "File Browser" all have the access rights set to 600.
Is there any error here, as all evidence I can find on the internet points to the bashrc file.

currently if i
ls -l /dev/sdb
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8,2010-01-04 17:00 /dev/sdb
now if i chmod this to 777 or use chown to change the owner this temporarily works but after a few moments it defaults back to its original permissions.
is there a way i can define the permission? i was thinking fstab but i can't have a mount point?

Jun 21, 2010I am using Xampp on ubuntu 10.04 and I have set my document root to a folder in my home directory for ease of use with netbeans. There are several times where I have to manually go and change the permission to 755. If you just place a file in the directory it does not default to 755, seems odd since the document root folder is in my home directory. Chmod works fine but I was wondering is their a way to make all files or folders added to my document root to default to 755?
