Mar 7, 2010i initilally installed ubuntu 9.10 then installed windows 7 ,then i recovered grub2 using livecd as told in the post [URL] i did "sudo update-grub" and got windows 7 menu entry but when i select that entry windows 7 does not load but the grub2 is reloaded again.
i cant boot to windows 7.
Windows 7 have 100 mb partition "System Reserved" the grub2 points to that partition but still windows 7 not loaded.

Apr 14, 2010I've set up a triple boot system (Ubuntu Karmic, Windows Vista and OSX86 -- a patched OS X which works on a PC) on a Dell 9200 (C2D 2.13 GHz, 4GB RAM, nVidia G210). I sue Grub2 as the bootloader and update-grub picks up OS X and it boots without any problem.
However, although when booting OS X using its own Darwin bootloader, I can apply the boot option "Graphics Mode"="1680x1050x32" to ensure that I get the screen resolution that I want, when OS X boots from Grub2, the only resolution available is 1024x768 which is disappointing. I have tried adding gfxmode=1650x1050x32 to the OS X section of /boot/grub/grub.cfg in Ubuntu but this does nothing.

Jul 6, 2010After a lot of updates yesterday I have found that Lucid will no longer boot, I just get a blank screen that has a cursor flashing in the top left corner. I can't boot into recovery mode to see what the issue(s) might be because I took that option out when I ran update-grub.My question is this, is there a way to run update-grub -either from a live-cd or grub-rescue mode- that would put the recovery boot option back in? I have already edited the /etc/default/grub file to comment out the field.

Oct 3, 2010I've installed Windows 7 Ultimate on a notebook which previously ran Vista. No problems there.I've now installed Ubuntu (now updated to 10.04)so that it can boot to either OS.
It all works fine and when I first power up, I get a screen which invites me to select the OS I want to use. There are however two problems:
1) it defaults to Ubuntu (whereas I would prefer it to default to Windows 7 (it's a work laptop and most of the applications are Windows-specific),
2) the list of choices is getting increasingly complex with an expanding list of choices (with each major update of Ubuntu adding more); it even seems to include an option to go back to Vista!As long as I move down the list and make the right selection quite speedily, I get to where I want to be (though, as I say, I would like to change the default option).Is there any way I can edit/shorten this list without damaging the functionality and how can I change that default?

SUSE :: Get The Option To Choose Windows Or The Installer At The Windows Boot Screen
Sep 16, 2010I'm new to linux, and I'm just trying to learn OpenSUSE. I just installed it and I have a few quick questions. #1 I accidentally installed the "OpenSUSE Installer (LOCAL)" on Windows 7, so now I get the option to choose windows or the installer at the windows boot screen. I ended up just installing OpenSUSE on a completely different HD (my original intent) from a burned DVD, so this installer is useless and I don't know how to remove it.
#2 After installing opensuse on my second HD, the boot screen is now SUSE's instead of Windows, and I can choose suse's desktop, the suse failsafe, windows 1, and windows 2. Windows 1 brings me to the windows boot screen with the choice i mentioned above (windows or the local installer i accidentally installed), and windows 2 i assume is my second windows partition which is just my SWAP file, and selecting it does nothing (which would make sense if thats all it is).
My question here is how do I make it so my default boot screen is the windows one with an option between windows 7 or suse? Or would this require reinstalling the system? If it does and its simple enough to explain please do I wouldnt mind removing it and reinstalling at this point, I would just wipe my whole second HD from windows.
#3 I have a netgear adapter. unfortunitly i'm not at home right now and I don't remember the model, so I'll provide that this evening if necessary. What I do know is they do not have a driver for linux. I've found ACX100, but I didn't find my netgear adapter listed on their website. I also found NDISWrapper, but thats for XP and I still don't know if that'll work. I will of course try both unless someone here has a better solution. If anyone knows anything that will work on any netgear adapter for linux please let me know, if not then I'll provide the model later on.

The installer forced me to unplug sda and make sdb primary. After installing I repositioned the HDDs and was stuck with a "NTLDR is Missing" messageAfter removing the search -fs--uuid tag from grub.cfg, Windows 7 booted for a good 0.5 sec and then rebooted. All that flashed was the "Starting Windows" page. I see similar bugs reported in the launchpad, but nothing that directly parallels this Here's my windows entry in grub.cfg:

Nov 18, 2010I've installed Xubuntu 10.10 on a very new EeePC 1201HA. The netbook came preconfigured from the OEM with the disk split into two Windows partitions of about the same size, one with Windows 7 starter. I removed the second partition (Which was just empty) and have installed a series of different distros since then, to try and gauge their support for the 1201HA hardware. I finally settled on Xubuntu, which can support most of the laptop's features with some tweaks.
However, after this last install, and a Grub config change needed to make the framebuffer work on this hardware, I'm unable to boot Windows 7.Grub shows it on the menu normally, but when I select the Windows 7 entry, I get the message 'Reboot and select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key,' which I understand isn't from the OS but rather a BIOS message which implies there is no loader.
I've tried using the Windows 7 system restore to do everything short of rewriting the Windows bootloader to the MBR (Which would, of course, remove Grub and thus not solve my problem, as I couldn't load Ubuntu from it). I attempted to fix the boot sector on the partition with the system restore tools, to no avail. And because this is a netbook with no optical drive, I'm unable to reinstall from a disk.

May 3, 2010I have a asus eeepc 1101ha. With Karmic,it would boot into w7 without problems.I installed Lucid on another partition,and after that the w7 grub entry would leave me with a blinking cursor in the left top corner, and hang.
I booted with the w7 dvd, ran bootrec.exe to restore mbr and bootmgr, and the booted into w7 to confirm. It was working. Then I booted with the live dvd, mounted the lucid partition, and installed grub. Now choosing the w7 entry would ask for the boot media, and pressing any key would bring me back to the grub menu. Lucid and karmic boot without problems.
Installing grub from karmic now gave the same error. Running update-grub didn't change anything.As I had to use w7, I booted again from the dvd, and restored again mbr and bootmgr. Booted into w7, used it, then once again to the live cd, to reinstall grub, and once again the w7 entry in grub makes grub ask for the boot media.I've attached my boot info script.Ah, I also played with the bootable flag for the /dev/sda1 partition, but it didn't change anything.

When you hit windows 7, it starts all the way to the ending of the flags, and just restarts.

But the wierd thing is my usb stick can boot windows 7 succesfully with the same configuration. Whats wrong with that? How can do with grub.cfg?

Jan 3, 2011ok so sounds like everyone elses issue that i`ve seen on here but i had it all working properly until i booted into ubuntu and updated grub somehow and when it told me to reboot all i got was a grub rescue error.
Now i got ubuntu 10.10 installed to try and fix the grub 2 error but now cant get it to boot windows from the menu.

Jul 12, 2010I updated Grub2 and now I cannot boot my Vista or Windows 7. I am running Ubuntu 10.04. I updated because Grub2 was not updating to the newer kernels that were being installed. Now the new kernel is showing in the boot menu, boots fine into Ubuntu, but my Windows installs won't boot. Current installed version is grub-install (GNU GRUB 1.98-1ubuntu6).

there were no entries in the Grub 2 menu after booting. I don't really understand the numbering of hd0,0 to like sda, but I changed "root (hd1,0)" to "root (hd0,0)" if Windows is on hd0, but after rebooting, I still didn't see it. I read somewhere that Grub2 starts partitions at 1, but wasn't sure that was true because in menu.lst they start with 0 sometimes. know entry-level steps to solve this?

Changing ${root} to (hd1) makes no difference. Also, I've been using Windows 7 for moths now without a problem, it's only when I try and boot it form grub2 that I get a problem. Physically removing sda lets Windows 7 boot fine.
Fedora :: Install Grub2 While Still Being Able To Boot Into Windows Or F13?

I ran grub-install, it installed fine and when I rebooted it worked, only I was presented with a command line with the message that "Minimal command-line editing is still supported etc". I'm dual-booting with Windows and F13 and I couldn't boot into either of them so I had to reinstall F13 and replace grub. How do I install grub2 while still being able to boot into Windows or F13?
