I set the default login to recovery console on the login screen options. Now I am stuck at the recovery console and don't know how to change the settings on the terminal screen to get back to desktop.

However, I no longer see the Win XP boot menu that allowed me to go into the Windows Recovery Console if I needed it. Previously with Ubuntu 8 & 9 this was briefly available after selecting the Win XP option from the grub menu, but not any more. How do I get it back?

Yes thats right. Last night I changed my logon password for better security. (have a feeling my flatmate knows it). When I tried to log in today, it wouldn't accept my password. No I know that I got it correct. I know this for a fact. So after a few tries, I decided stuff this, I am going to reset it using recovery console. But the recovery console just hangs with the following on the screen:

I can ctrl+alt f2, and I just get a flashing cursor. So that's it then. My ubuntu box is hosed and I am about twenty minutes away from formatting and starting again. 6 months of schoolwork, designs for architectural competitions etc all gone.
When I try to load Ubuntu (recovery mode) or if I press Ctrl+Alt+F1, the image gets corrupted showing a white screen with black writing on it, but which is unreadable. Also the words seem to be spelled backwards. I'm trying to install an NVIDIA driver and I need to stop first the X server.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm having an issue with LVM on an external USB drive. When booting, the system drops into a recovery console if the external drive is not powered on because it cannot find the volume group and members. The setup is one system drive with fedora 12 installed, one internal data drive; LVM volume group vg1 with 5 partitions and one external backup drive LVM volume group vg2 with 5 partitions. Both the data drive and external backup are the same size and identical layout.
I use an rsync script that I wrote to execute backups (mirroring actually).
fstab is set 'noauto' on the external partitions.
I am new to LVM and I'm stumped as how to make the system 'ignore' the external drive at boot, if not powered on.
My dad has done something to his comp and it won't boot. it stops on boot up an comes up with some sort of black screen command line. he said its something along the lines of "initramfs" and he can't seem to do anything. We tried booting to the recovery console from the grub menu and gets the same response.
Hes having trouble booting to cd at the moment so I need to know is there some sort of command that will fix or at least give some help that he can type in from this spot.

been working like a charm. booting up flawlessly to desktop and then I decided to change my backround and now when I boot I get just past the ubuntu with the dots screen and then a mostly black with a few white and red scratches. if I go to recovery and then start x, boot up is flawless.
I installed Maverick with auto login. One could undo this by reinstalling I suppose, but is there an easier way to get back to the standard form of login?Hopefully that will cause my default key ring to unlock correctly.

while looking for my installation disc, my wall-mate gives me this Ubuntu Studio dvd and instead of downloading a new one, i have installed the studio. at the first sight ... i am being a fond of studio version .. its really cool.
now, i am quite habituated with default appearance of ubuntu, i found studio appearance is quite unusual (for me, menu layouts, panel everything).

I have been using this configuration successfully for months, after quite a bit of work fixing the sound issues, wifi issues and video issues. It still has a standby issue, but its liveable and Im quite happy with its performance for such an inexpensive machine.
I tried to boot to XP today, and I must have picked the recovery partition by mistake out of the grub menu.
It loaded "windows pre-execution environment" and then asked me if i wanted to run recovery. I told it to cancel before it did anything, or so I thought.
It only had 10-15 seconds, so whatever it did couldn't have been much.
When it rebooted I got this error.

After a lot of updates yesterday I have found that Lucid will no longer boot, I just get a blank screen that has a cursor flashing in the top left corner. I can't boot into recovery mode to see what the issue(s) might be because I took that option out when I ran update-grub.My question is this, is there a way to run update-grub -either from a live-cd or grub-rescue mode- that would put the recovery boot option back in? I have already edited the /etc/default/grub file to comment out the field.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIm dual booting vista and ubuntu 10.10 when i start up i get the option to boot linux OR i can boot window recovery (loader) which works or i can choose windows xp which doesnt even work and im not sure why its there since i dont have xo installed and i never have on this pc. it doesnt say anything about vista anywhere.
My question is...is this a problem? it seems to work fine but i dont want to have problems later on.
I don't what happened but yesterday I was working normally and then I shutdown the computer, today when I opened ubuntu it took me to tyy1 login screen, I entered my username and password then it took me to the normal login screen with the login drums sound and it wrote on my account (logged in) so I clicked it and I entered my password again and then I got to my ubuntu so what went wrong and how to fix it also I noticed that a new terminal in system tools occurred called Kernel (I didn't add it)

This started a few days ago and I checked back through recently installed packages and nothing looks related. If I boot into ubuntu normally, plymouth looks a mess, but then things boot fine but while the mouse is showing and ubuntu goes about with connecting to networks and so on, but it doesn't register the and input from the mouse or keyboard. It will sleep if you press the power button, but its no more responsive after waking up.
If I boot into recovery mode, and use the failsafe graphics option then everything runs fine. Apart from 3D graphics being pretty slow, which I can kind of understand. I get the same behaviour on all of the last three kernels. I'm running the latest maverick on an HP 6715b. i386 version although the processor is 64 bit compatible. 2Gb RAM.
I just installed 10.04, and its taking me to the console login, rather than the graphical login. When I tried the live cd, the graphical environment was good. But after installation, I dont get the graphical login , so that I can get into the desktop.
I have a ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 card on ThinkPad T60. Everything was working on 8.10, and I decided to install 10.04 and now it doesnt work.
I've been using opensuse 11.2 and windows xp at parallel. After I decide to reinstall windows, I got the error saying "invalid partition table" after the first restart of windows xp installation.
I tried to use windows system recovery console and committing fixmbr and fixboot commands, but didn't work.
After all, i boot with opensuse livecd to run the grub and got my opensuse back.
How can I installed windows on a opensuse installed system? My plan was first to install windows xp, then opensuse again.
I am not able to login to server from console attached to server, every time i enter username & password but it again asks for username & password. But when i try to login to server from remote machine, login happens properly.
View 4 Replies View RelatedLet's start with some context: About a week ago, I saw in the university computer that the text mode consoles(ctrl+alt+f[n]) worked with a great resolution on a 19" wide screen (I think it is 1440x900) running fedora 11. So I wondered if I could make the text consoles at home to work with a good resolution also.So I started to search for that and found the kernel parameter vga= . The problem: it doesn't support 1440x900 or any other 16:10 resolution for my graphic card. Then I thought that maybe fedora uses some module that allows that, because the livecd allows a good resolution (by default) on my desktop computer.
What I thought so far is that fedora is not using vesa for the virtual console (which i think is the driver that ubuntu uses) and I want to know what driver it is and how to use it in ubuntu (either compiling the kernel or simply installing something).I don't even know if my guesses are right or not. I am using Ubuntu 10.10 on a Dell Optiplex GX270, with the Intel video chip. I have a problem with my virtual consoles/terminals (<ctrl-alt>F1-F6). The default screen resolution was set to 1600x1200 at installation, which results in a nearly microscopic, unreadable font. I posted the problem on this thread on ubuntuforums.org, where they suggested adding GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 and GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=640x480 to /etc/default/grub and /etc/grub.d/00_header. Still no joy--the console screen resolution still was 1600x1200.
I have noticed that the screen resolution changes three times during boot; it starts at standard VGA, 640x480, then switches to 1600x1200, then finally to 1024x768, which is my preferred resolution in X. But, if I switch to a virtual console, the resolution shoots up to 1600x1200 again. There are times when I like to use virtual terminals, and I would like to avoid eyestrain.
I am having some trouble logging into my machine: it seems to not accept my password. I am fairly sure I am typing it correctly. I can work around it easily enough by logging into the console and changing the password, but it is annoying.

Now I want to switch it to American keyboard layout. In X this was no problem. But in the tty consoles I cant get it changed. It does not matter to me if it is system wide or user wide because I am the only user. (system wide would be a little bit more preferrable because it would affect the super user too, I think).I tried dpkg-reconfigure console-data
and selecting my desired layout. This changes the Layout to American until reboot
