I have a Toshiba NB 205 Netbook. It is currently dual boot with Win 7 and UNR (9.10). The default OS is Win 7. I would like to leave the machine as dual boot, but make UNR the default boot OS, so that I don't have to babysit the machine and choose UNR every time I reboot the machine. BTW, I am delighted with UNR! What a great OS. Really like how it plays so nicely with Firefox. And much faster than Win 7.

I basically wanted grub to not pop-up and just boot the default version of Ubuntu. Also the boot loader comes up with the options to boot Windows and OS X and I was wondering if it would be possible to remove those from the list as well?

But, I would like to be able to switch between Fedora and Windows remotely.For instance, if my home computer was currently booted up to Fedora, and I was at work using VNC, I would like to be able to tell the computer to restart, but start up to Windows so that I could do remote on Windows (and vice-versa).Is this possible? It seems like it should be, I just don't know the best way to go about it. It seems like maybe a simple program could be written, that when run would just do a quick rewrite of the config file for the bootloader.

The grub splash were you choose which os you want to load. Is there a way to change it and make it look like iuno.... lm5/6 or opensuse? Obviously I'd change the image. I just don't want to just change the image. How can I change it to boot windows by default instead?
View 2 Replies View Relatedi downloaded backtrack 4 (final) and booted the iso onto a flash drive using unetbootin. i then changed the boot order so the flash drive was first. after i did that i got into backtrack 4 did the install.sh and now i cant boot windows 7. even after changing the boot order to default, i turn my computer on and get a message that says:

i can only boot backtrack 4 OS, i really want to know what can i do to be able to boot my windows 7 home premium os.
I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 from earlier versions. I have a dual boot system with Windows 7. Grub was set to boot Windows by default Things were working fine. I decided to upgrade to Grub2. It seemed like a good idea at the time. Now when booting up,the name at the top of the Grub menu is 1.98, which is Grub 2. When I run grub-install -v, it comes back grub-install (GNU GRUB 0.97) which is not Grub2. Now when I boot up, Ubuntu 10.04 is the default. I have to manually choose Windows if I want to use that system. I have been unable to change the boot order following instructions from this site. Any Way changing the boot order to make Windows 7 the default. I am using a Toshiba Satellite.

while looking for my installation disc, my wall-mate gives me this Ubuntu Studio dvd and instead of downloading a new one, i have installed the studio. at the first sight ... i am being a fond of studio version .. its really cool.
now, i am quite habituated with default appearance of ubuntu, i found studio appearance is quite unusual (for me, menu layouts, panel everything).
I would like to know how do i change this default appearance like ubuntu default 10.04 appearance. I am attaching a screen-shoot of my friends desktop, he upgraded his ubuntu thru apptitude update.
Currently I have a 1TB drive that has Ubuntu installed and is used for all of my storage, vids music etc.After speaking with a friend he suggested I change the operating system to a smaller drive and use the 1TB for storage only. His reasoning for this is that the disc with the OS on it receives much heavier use so storage should be kept separate.If that's true I have a 250GB drive that I could use as the boot/OS drive.What I was considering doing was to make the 250GB drive the boot disc in BIOS, then install Ubuntu from the Live CD onto the 250GB. After doing that my plan was to use gparted to wipe the Ubuntu OS partition off the TB drive to leave it as a storage only drive.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI currently have xp installed on the 1st partition and Ubuntu installed on the 2nd.Both partitions are on the same drive.(Being the 1st drive)I have just purchased a new case and some other components and wish to take the opportunity to change my current setup so that xp is on the 1st drive (alone) and Ubuntu on the 2nd drive (alone) Using clonezilla, I take a backup of each partition separately.I then copy back the xp partition to the 1st disk. I then copy back the Ubuntu partition to the 2nd disk.I gather at his point i run the live Ubuntu cd, open a terminal and run sudo update-grub.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just want to confirm something before I mess with the bootloader. It kind of scares me to rewrite my MBR. It appears that the grub version that comes with Ubuntu 10.10 drives its menu generation from /etc/grub.d/* when you execute update-grub. If I want to put windows first in the list, could I just rename "30_os-prober" to something like "09_os-prober" and run update-grub? My reason for this is every time Ubuntu updates the kernel, it adds 2 new entries to grub's boot menu. It's easy enough to remove these via the Synaptic Package Manager, but that means for at least 1 boot cycle, my default OS gets messed up (Windows). I have to leave it as the default for others that use the computer, even though I prefer Ubuntu.
View 6 Replies View RelatedThis machine has two internal HDDs which are dedicated to Vista (ergh). For various reasons, I elected to use an external drive for the installation of Linux. When I installed Fedora, I didn't have an eSATA cable, so I installed it via USB. if I change the boot device so it boots off the USB drive, the machine apparently remaps the drive to BIOS drive 0. However, when Linux boots, it'll still be considered sdc. So far so good. However, when I plug in the eSATA cable and try to boot Linux that way, the machine will boot off the internal sda because the only available option is "Internal Hard Drive." (And yes, the eSATA is working properly.)
I obviously need to install GRUB on the first drive, and it will then let me choose between Vista and Linux. I've done this kind of thing before on other machines and haven't had to much of a problem. However, running 'grub-install /dev/sda' resulted simply in blowing away my Vista boot loader, and a Grub installation that would hang at a black screen. Which of course then resulted in a plethora of pain trying to fix it with Microsoft's deliberately pathetic engineering.What did I do wrong there? And incidentally, the external hard drive isn't always going to be hooked up, so I don't want to be dependent on it to get into Vista.
I am upgrading a system to have encrypted disks, it's a two disk system, so I want the BIOS to look at /dev/hdb first to unlock it, then it should reboot, see that isn't a system disk and try to boot /dev/hda. Then that gets unlocked, and the system boots. After unlocking hdb I get a Grub error 17. I can't edit Grub to look at hda as on normal boot it hasn't been unlocked yet, so it can't see the file system at that point. I reformatted an old XP disk as hdb, and it worked fine, but I'd rather not install windows every time, just to reformat it as ext3. Is there a simple way of clearing the boot sector of hdb?

now if i chmod this to 777 or use chown to change the owner this temporarily works but after a few moments it defaults back to its original permissions.
is there a way i can define the permission? i was thinking fstab but i can't have a mount point?
I am using Xampp on ubuntu 10.04 and I have set my document root to a folder in my home directory for ease of use with netbeans. There are several times where I have to manually go and change the permission to 755. If you just place a file in the directory it does not default to 755, seems odd since the document root folder is in my home directory. Chmod works fine but I was wondering is their a way to make all files or folders added to my document root to default to 755?

I have clients that are having trouble installing a package that hangs because of the installation agreement(terminal window) that has to be answered but because the terminal window is not being displayed, it cannot be viewed it just hangs so I want them to use synaptic manager.

Grub currently defaults to boot Ubuntu I want to make changes to boot XP as default. What file(s) do I need to edit to make necessary changes? In the older distros I knew how to edit "menu.1st" to get this done. The newer distros must have a different structure because I can not find a menu.1st file.
recently I have been trying to create the perfect custom ubuntu .iso to write to a usb drive so i could carry around a live cd version of my current desktop operating system. I have 2 problems...
1: using various tools like Remastersys, Ubuntu Customization Kit, and Ubuntu's own LiveCDCustomization tutorial I have managed to install most of the packages that I want.... Truecrypt is not in the repos and i would very much like it on my custom live cd. while in chroot i tried using wget to download it then extract and install it, but i got a 404 error so it did not seem to be connecting to the place to download it. is there a workaround to getting truecrypt to install into my extracted squashfs? would it be possible to download the packages to my desktop then copy them over to my chroot squashfs to be installed?
2: I have not been able to customize the default appearance of the desktop environment like the background, icons,colors, window border, panels, applets, and so on.... Ubuntu's tutorial states that I need to edit .xmls in /etc/gconf but i do not understand how to edit those to get what I want. LiveCD creates a new user with default settings everytime it is started so its a matter of editing the files that control the settings of a new user.
First of all not sure if this is the correct forum but anyway.Ok well i installed this theme because i liked the look of windows 7 (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.p...content=113264).So i ran the GUIUninstall.sh and it seemed to work but the login screen still has the theme i was wondering how i could change it back to the defualt one.
