OpenSUSE Install :: Lost Windows Option From Boot Menu?
Dec 5, 2009
I already had windows installed on the c drive so linux suse 11.2 has been installed onto d. There was a problem after I finished the install - after I rebooted no menu appeared, the pc just hung on a black screen with flashing cursor, so I put the linux DVD in again and rain a repair. It repaired the boot menu but now there is no option to boot into windows.

A Microsoft anti virus program (Security Essentials) cleaned out a bunch of problems in Windows XP and now I don't have the double boot option any more. What do I change to get Ubuntu option back? OH, I also had to do a checkpoint restore prior to that but it was after I had installed Ubunto (I think). Which leads me to ask....how do I identify the Ubuntu disk space I allocated at install time? I can't seem to find it.

I installed 11.04 after Windows 7. when the GRUB boot menu starts up there is an option for Win 7 boot but it will not boot windows. When that option is selected the screen changes colour for 2 seconds and then reverts to the GRUB menu. Ubuntu boots fine.I downloaded the Boot Info Script and ran it, the results are
Code:

I had a working dual boot Ubuntu 10 and Windows 7. Anyways long story short, I got it working again but have lost the boot option for windows 7. If i run fdisk -l, I get the following.
root@support-Latitude-E6400:/home/support# fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
[code]....
I installed gparted and can see that windows 7 is installed in dev/sda6. In another forum, i read that someone had to edit their menu.lst so i did with the following.
title=Windows 7
rootnoverify (hd0,6)
makeactive
chainloader +1
When i try to boot from windows 7, i get the following error. Error 12: invalid device request. How can i get my laptop to boot from windows again?

I installed Ubuntu as a dual-boot system with Windows XP very carefully. Unfortunately, though given the option to boot Windows at the grub menu, when I select it, I get an error. Booting Ubuntu on my other partition works just fine, no issues.
I also attempted to access files from the first partition in Ubuntu using gparted, but once I mounted it, all of my files were not present. I only saw manufacturer files, and many files and folders I didn't recognize.
Also, as an aside, my laptop monitor is suffering from occasional black-outs during use. Ubuntu gave me a little toolbar flag, telling me to go to a website and use the patches given to fix it, but I'm not quite so sure where to input the given patch text. Do I really need to go through the trouble of finding the source code, etc., or is it more simple?

I got ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx along with windows (dual boot) and using Grub. On my computer, I have my C:/ (programs) and D:/ (data). I've never used my D:/ before that day that I've lost my windows partition on my grub menu. I usually use my D:/ with windows. The first time I used my D:/ to store data with linux, I lost my windows option in my grub menu. I'm not sure what I did wrong but I do want to restore my windows option in my grub menu.
After "fdisk -l",
I checked in /boot/grub and there is no menu.lst to modify. how I can get back my windows option in my grub menu ?

I added an entry to grub's menu.lst and reran grub (grub-install hd0) and now my background is gone and the entries just show up like on a normal console.
I searched the forums and I couldn't find anything. Does anybody know why this happened and how to fix it?
I have not changed anything in menu.lst except for adding the new OS.

My install of 11.4 (& 12.1) won't load unless I add the X11failsafe option to the loading of 11.4 (& 12.1) in the Grub menu.lst file. They bomb out after resetting the video when booting. I don't need to do this with my 11.3 install. Upon closer inspection 11.3 is using the nouveau nVidia driver, whereas both 11.4 & 12.1 are using the fbdev nVidia driver. My Hardware is a GEForce 6150SE and a Samsung SyncMaster 933SN. I have a couple of questions
1) What do I lose by adding the X11failsafe option in Menu.lst?
2) Can I, should I, replace the fbdev driver with something else. If yes, What? Nouveau?

right now, my machine runs ubuntu 10.10 due to work issue, i need to use windows server 2008 R2 (its a windows exclusive company) but i never used any of the active directory or anything from the windows server (only experience with windows is visual studio and those GAMES!), so i figure i need to practice a bit on my own b4 starting the job and just at the same time I found out as a univ student i get it for free! And plus, I am finding opensuse a better option for me than ubuntu So im wondering what i should do regarding these 2 systems here s some option
1). Install openSuse 11.4, and install VirtualBox and use windows server 2008 R2 on vbox
2). Install windows server 2008 R2 and then install openSuse alongside with it
3). Install windows server 2008 R2 and install openSuse in virtualBox
I have been using linux as my primary OS for more than a year now and I rlly need it for both school and my own entertainment. So wondering which option would best work out for me
wat are your opinions? PS: my machine is about 2 years ago a Dell laptop, with core 2 duo p8700 (2.53ghz) 4GB ram, and nvidia gfx, which even tho is still fast, but isnt rlly that snappy when it comes to virtualization even running xp in a virtual machine is quite laggy at times :S

I have a dual-boot setup with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10. I used TrueCrypt to encrypt my drive, but in doing so I lost my Ubuntu boot option (as TrueCrypt boot takes up the MBR). So now I'm trying again, using TrueCrypt's option of multiple OS installed on same drive. At the moment, it won't let me do that since the Grub boot is on the same partition as the Win7 bootI. In a nutshell, I need to move Grub to another partition so that I can load from that boot option once I <esc> from the TrueCrypt boot. created a new partition for Grub, but don't know how to move it. My partitions as they stand now are:

Does anyone know how I can move Grub to sda4? Or if I'm totally on the wrong track here?

Under Windows XP in the C Drive, I've downloaded PLoP boot manager to force the USB boot. I've tried about a thousand things and I get a different error message at different times from each attempt. I've got all of those documented, and I imagine I'll need to post them. I'm just not doing it quite yet as sometimes I give too much information and I really feel that I'm being an idiot here, missing something simple.
I'd like to install openSUSE onto the D Drive, using the USB and PLoP to boot it. I've downloaded openSUSE's torrents for all iso's (Net, DVD and LiveKDE). In order to get those files onto the USB, I first format to FAT32. I've tried UNetBootIn, LiLi, and mounting the iso on Daemon Tools and then copy-paste into the hard drive. None of these work and they all give different errors. Is this even possible, am I wasting my time? This is getting incredibly frustrating as I've been at it for nearly a week.

I had mounted the pen drive then dismounted. I found out that by putting the pendrive into my sat receiver recorder with Ext3 mad the machine go crazy and I have had to sort that out before this! To say my wife was mad as hell is an understatement, but this was what I was told to do on AVForum. But now this leaves me in a predicament. I have no OpenSues booting. It goes through all the loading and then it asks me for the password with all the script showing and not the desktop. It says repair boot after this. Is there a simple way to resolve it? I think it was looking for the pendrive. Well I had to reformat that back to FAT.

I'm using openSUSE 11.3 with Xfce 4.7.0 and I want to enable automatic login. What I have tried so far:
1) YaST -> User and Group Management -> Expert Options -> Login Settings. This didn't work because I have no "Login Settings" option in this menu.
2) Editing variables "DISPLAYMANAGER_AUTOLOGIN" and "DISPLAYMANAGER_PASSWORD_LESS_LOGIN" via YaST -> /etc/sysconfig Editor. This didn't work too and xdm was still asking about name and password no matter what I set here.
3) I don't know how to configure xdm, so I tried to replace xdm with gdm. Gdm worked, but application "gdmsetup" was missing from my installation (YaST simply don't offer this package) and I don't know how to set up gdm manually, so I ended without autologin again.

After giving it my best shot, I had to give up and finally decide that I need "acpi=off" added to the kernel line in grub. I have done so, saved it:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31.12-0.2-default root=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST950212A_5LE02797-part1
pci=noacpi
I have tried "acpi=off" "pci=noacpi". But on boot the system totally ignores this and loads the acpi support from the kernal, which shut down the USB ports. Where is this option used in Suse so that the kernel will recognize on each boot?

I installed Ubuntu onto a separate partition I have. Now however when i boot up, Grub (v1.98 ) gives m 5 options.
Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.35-22-generic
Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.35-22-generic (recovery)
Memory Test (memtest86+)
Memory Test (memtest86+, serial console)
Windows Recovery Environment (loader)
With no Vista option.
When I run the recovery environment however, it runs just my regular vista boot would have. Is this just a name issue? Ideally I would like to have my Vista option back.

my own fault really, just dived in to do the update and did not back everything up. I have three disks in my machine one winxp for games , one was suse 11.2 and added lately one for ubuntu. added the ubuntu disk installed and this replaced the grub loader, still gave me all my previous options but does not look as nice as the suse one.so I did update on 11.2 and thought would give me the nice one back and still have all my entries. Er no. entry for win and 11.3 but no ubuntu.

Ive been running crunchbang on my system, and yesterday decided to try opensuse so i can install the novell client. I ran the live gnome cd and during installation I shrank my main partition down and created a new partition for opensuse. Installation went well other than sometimes programs close and make the part of my desktop that they occupied useless.
Question 1) I can see my crunch bang files through opensuse but i cannot find or boot into crunch bang.
question 2) Why are these programs closing and then killing my desktop? Say i have a Firefox in the top left of my desktop and it errors and closes. I go open Firefox again, anywhere that the old Firefox window was in ( not click able). My cursor will turn to the text cursor as soon as it enters the x y position. I have to restart the laptop to be able to click file or insert a web address.

I have already started a thred here about RAID failure: RAID5 failed, system drops into limited single mode - openSUSE Forums
I was not able to boot the system until I commented /dev/md0 in fstab
Why is it so?
This is just a files sharing partition, it is not a system partition.
Is there any option to always ignore any errors and continue boot?
