OpenSUSE Hardware :: 3D Vides / Sis_drv.o-402 - Games Runs Really Slow

Apr 26, 2010

I have a laptop with a sis 650 video card. It works just fine except in video games like assault cube where it runs really slow. Now that could be because I have less than a gig of memory, but more likely it seems lack of 3D support. I found the sis_drv.o-402 file on the sis site, which seems to be a kernel module. This info came from an article that is a couple of years old. It, and other references speak of using "insmod sis_drv.o-402". I can not find such a command, nor can I find reference to it in the opensuse site. I also can not seem to find which driver I am currently using, and if it has 3D support.

Ubuntu :: 9.10 Video Driver - Games Very Slow

Feb 14, 2010

I'm having some problems with my video drivers I think. Before I get into detail here's some info about my laptop:
It's a Laptop, yes.
Graphics Card = ATI Mobility Radeon X2300
Model: ASUS F3KE (the 1 without the Camera, just a mic)
Ubuntu Version: 9.10

I believe the problem is with my Video Driver. I can Set Visual effects on high without any trouble, but when running games (Even Java Games) that I can run flawlessly when running under Vista are almost impossible to run on Ubuntu, extremely low FPS and well it's just pointless to even try!

Examples of games are:
Guild Wars running (Well not really *running*) with wine.
Saga with wine
Wurm Online (Java)
Alien Arena
And even Glest!

Ubuntu Networking :: PC Runs Slow If Network Unplugged?

Dec 16, 2010

I've been asked to look at a system which is running slowly. It's running hardy on an intel Q9400 quad core CPU system which should be a pretty fast machine.

The most obvious symptom of this problem is that the terminal takes about 10 seconds to open instead of the usual fraction of a second.

What I've discovered so far is that the system has 2 network ports one configured to access the LAN and the other to connect directly to another piece of hardware using a different subnet. If the LAN is not connected the system runs slowly and if it is connected it runs at normal speed. It also makes no difference whether or not the second network port is connected.

I've looked at the system monitor and can see no abnormal network traffic or processes using a lot of CPU resources.

Debian Hardware :: Glxgears Showing 900 FPS But 3d Games Very Slow?

Aug 13, 2011

I just installed Debian Squeeze a couple days ago and haven't had any problems so far except trying to get 3D acceleration to work with my Radeon 5770 card. When running glxgears, I get over 900 FPS and the gears are spinning great. When I try to run a 3D game like OpenArena, ScorchedEarth, or FlightGear, they are all so slow as to be unplayable. (extremely slow)

I've been trying to get this working for a while and had no luck.As per internet advice, I installed firmware-linux-free and firmware-linux-nonfree.

In glxinfo, it says "direct rendering: yes"

In my /var/log/Xorg.0.log file it says:

(WW) RADEON(0): Direct rendering disabled
(II) RADEON(0): Acceleration disabled
(WW) Falling back to old probe method for vesa
(WW) Falling back to old probe method for fbdev

Ubuntu :: Laptop Runs Unbearably Slow When A Dock Is Running?

Nov 29, 2010

My friend recently gave up on Windows Vista on his old laptop and installed Ubuntu 10.10 64 Bit on it. He came over the other day because I wanted to show him and install some cool things. One of those things was a dock. I tried both AWN and Docky. When the dock started running his system became so unbearably slow. Like it took over 5 seconds to respond to movements sometimes. When he closed the dock everything went speedy again. He has a whole lot of compiz stuff running now, including desktop cube/animations burning up windows when he closes them. I'm wondering why the dock is causing such a major slow down.

His specs aren't even that bad. He has a Dell XPS M1330 with the following specs:Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 (2.0GHZ)4GB of RAMNVIDIA 8400M GSMy laptop has very similar specs to his, except my integrated graphics card is an ATI 3200 and it runs AWN and Docky flawlessly. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? His graphics card was one of those faulty NVidia cards from back then but he already had it fixed twice and its been running Vista without any graphic issues fine since. I didn't get a chance to look at it again since then so I couldn't play around.. I'm thinking he might have possibly messed something up playing around when he first installed it. I may suggest a clean install and do everything again to see if the problem persists.

Software :: Flash Games Run Fine On First Play But Slow Down With Repeated Play

May 1, 2011

I've had this problem on a few flash games (a couple of EA's sports management games on Facebook, and the Pokemon Dream World.) When I first use them everything's fine, but as I continue coming back to them, they seem to run a little slower each time. Ultimately in the case of the former two it got so bad that they were unusual.

Why is this happening? If they were slow from the start I could understood, but what could be making them go wrong on repeated plays?

I'm on 32 bit Kubuntu Lucid, firefox is my browser, and it's the official flash plugin.

General :: Video Driver - Some Video Games Are Unusually Slow

Tremulous, for example, worked reasonably fine on this computer with Windows XP, but now (Debian) for some reason it's laggy even on the title screen.
Something wrong with my video drivers?

All of the information I know:

Only linux on the machine.

OpenSUSE :: CPU That Runs Always Very High?

Jan 25, 2010

I have a couple of problems (opensuse11.1):

1: CPU that runs always very high.

In the system monitor I have a number of unknown processes from user root,-1 that keep popping up (see yellow highlight in image1). What are they?

As you may see zombie processes are also coming and going... among which dns-resolver, ifup, ifdown, ifdown-route, netconfig, nis, ntp-config, udved, grep,
touch.... Is that normal??

The system load view in the monitor indicates 2 CPUs with different loads (see image2) when I have only one intelP4. What is this?

At the same time the output of command top seems more regular, except for the high cpu load, although I wouldn't be able to say what every processes is meant for.(image3)

Has anyone an explanation? Is it normal that most of these zombie processes seem network related?

2. Virus report from external server

I usually connect to a server via VPN (to access electronic journals) but recently the access has been denied to me because "my connection is infected with the worm Conficker".
I know it is very unlikely that a linux pc catches a virus.. so I am puzzeld... I have a dual boot with Windows (probably infected in some ways) but haven't used it for at least a year..

I've tried a custom command under properties ie java -jar, but the problem is that the .jar file doesn't seem to be able to use any of the files in the same directory. OpenSUSE Install :: KDE Too Slow On Start Up. OpenSUSE-WindowsXP Dual Boot?

Jul 18, 2011

I have an 1TB hard drive, half of it for Windows XP SP3, another half for OpenSUSE 11.4. After installing OpenSUSE, it didn't take me much time to notice that there was something wrong with KDE: sometimes it loaded quite fast, as expected, but most of the time I'd have to wait around 1 minute in that loading screen. Then I updated the kernel, as well as KDE itself, but that didn't solve the problem.

After that I tried to start the system using Enlightnment, and it was lightning fast compared to KDE, however, I didn't quite like its interface, and for some reason GNOME refused to start. All that was too frustrating to me, so I gave up and have been using Windows for the last few weeks. Got sick of it now and here I am on OpenSUSE again. Oh, it feels sooo much better! BUT, I'm still with the same problem.

My specs are as follow:
Motherboard: Gigabyte MA78GM-S2H (with updated BIOS, version F11)
Processor: AMD Phenom X3 8450
Memory: 2GB
Videocard: Nvidia Geforce 8500GT (using NVIDIA proprietary drivers)
OpenSUSE 11.4
KDE 4.6.0
Did I forget anything important?

Ps.: I didn't have these problems with Mandriva 2010.2, which, if I'm correct, used the same KDE version.
