OpenSUSE Hardware :: 11.3 - Constant HD Activity / System Runs At Snail Pace
Aug 8, 2010
Just after I boot up I get this wierd HDD activity that lasts for some time during which my system runs at snail Pace and or Hangs. After a while the activity stops and things are good and then randomly it all starts again. I have read some forum post on constant HDD activity but they do not seem to apply to my problem. I am Running 11.3 with a quad core AMD 64bit CPU and 4GB of memory.

I am still new to linux and just installed opensuse 11.1 and all was fine untill I went to yast, software and ran the online update. Now when I boot up linux it takes a long time and after suse is booted up the HDD led is constant. I did know enough to add VGA=normal in grub and this is what is is displayed when it hangs:
<6>ata1: SATA max UDMA/133 cmd 0x9f0 ctl 0xbf0 bmdma 0xd800 irq 21
<6>ata2: SATA max UDMA/133 cmd 0x970 ctl 0xb70 bmdma 0xd808 irq 21
<4>ata1: link is slow to respond, please be patient (ready=-19)
<3>ata1: SRST failed (errno=-16)
<6>ata1: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300)
<4>ata1: link online but device misclassified, retrying .....
<4>ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [ASA1] enabled at IRQ 20
<6>sata_nv 0000:00:0e.1: PCI INT B -> Link[ASA1] -> GSI 20 (level, low) -> IRQ 20
<5>sata_nv 0000:00:0e.1: Using SWNCQ mode
<7>sata_nv 0000:00:0e.1: setting latency timer to 64
It looks like it has something to do with the HDD. I Have 2 HDD's in the computer with linux on the second drive. I also noticed that before updating I could access my ntfs partitions in nautilus and now they do not show up and are not in my fstab file and I do not know how to add them back in.

I'm using Lucid on a laptop, (details in sig). Often after I've been running Ubuntu for a while, like a few hours, my HD activity light will come on and not stop, causing my machine to become laggy. (A link might open 3-5 seconds I click on it, typing appears a second after I press the key, a window or dropdown menu might take 5-10 seconds to be drawn.) I currently have Firefox with one tab and a Nautilus window open. Conky says the CPU is running at 10-20%, RAM is almost all used, (I assume Firefox's cache is filling up, since I've been surfing for a while), and swap is around 25% full. I just turned Compiz & Emerald off, but the HD is still spinning away. At this point, I usually log out and in again, or reboot. I though slowing performance with usage, resource-hogging background processes and constant rebooting were Windoze traits! What gives?Apparently, this is caused by Update Manager. Unbeknownst to me, Update Manager was waiting for me to give it the go-ahead, but while it's open, instead of patiently waiting, it renders my computer unusably slow, even though it's not supposed to be doing anything.

I understand that Ubuntu typically has some disk activity even when idle, but I believe that I have a problem that I am worried is affecting my disk drive - which has recently become quite loud. The system disk activity light flashes about twice per second, all the time, when idle. iostat shows a Blk_wrtn/s of between 10 and 40. I am running Lucid x64. The system disk uses ext4 for root and ext4 for /home. The disk activity starts before I even log in. There is no disk activity if I drop to the root shell in recovery mode - as seen by no flashing light and iostat writes = 0. I have tried killing my media server processes, Mediatomb and Squeezeboxserver. I have unmounted the ntfs data drive. There is nothing else running beyond the vanilla install to my recollection other the services above that I stopped. How can I determine which process is causing the constant writing? I do not have this issue on my laptop which is running Karmic, and as I mentioned earlier, I think this non-stop activity is damaging my drive.

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on an AMD64 computer with an ATI Raedon x1250 graphics card.
Everything runs fine for about 3 hours, then it will randomly stop working.
Symptoms:
Mouse stops moving for 10 seconds.
Screen goes white.
Speakers start repeating last 10 seconds of whatever was playing.
Screen goes orange or purple with lines across it and random symbols...
At that point I hardware restart my computer and all is fine again
dmesg yields the following after every crash

My .jar file needs and uses some files in the same directory it's in (everything, including the jar was unzipped into said directory). It runs perfectly when I do java -jar file.jar in the command line, but there's trouble when I double-click the file when running from the file system manager. I've tried a custom command under properties ie java -jar, but the problem is that the .jar file doesn't seem to be able to use any of the files in the same directory. When running, the jar can't find any of the files that it needs.

I have Karmic installed on three different computers (work, home and laptop), but on my home desktop there is a strange performance problem. During disk activity it sometimes becomes completely unresponsive. The mouse cursor doesn't even move. It actually seems fine when it first boots up, but it gradually gets worse as I use the computer for a while until it eventually becomes completely unusable. I'm only having trouble on the one system. The drive in the system is SATA, and I already checked to make sure DMA was on. It is a x86_64 kernel.I tried adding noapic to the kernel boot line after some googling, but it seemed to have no effect

I am working on a program lets say programX which must run when the computer is not in use. I want to develop a monitoring program to monitor if there is user activity on the system so that it can stop the programX from running when the user is using the system and start programX when there is no user activity. Is there a way to determine this in linux?

My system started running at 75 % CPU (its normally 20%), so I opened a terminal and looked at 'top', there are many processes running as root, the one thats sucking the CPU is this:'user'- root, 'pid'-2963, 'command'-X. below that there are a few processes of my user account, then alot more 'root' processes.

System activity monitoring tools - top, iotop, ntop, sar, collectl, etc - may be a good reference to judge the system activity when the system transitions to sleep state. But if I make the system transition to sleep state when i/o activity is zero during 15 minutes, for example, it won't sleep forever because slight i/o by daemons, etc occurs continuously even if no user i/o.So how can I judge the system activity to change the state by using those tools?

Doesn't matter what application I am using this thing locks up tighter than a prison cell. I can't seem to do anything but reboot at that point. 11.2 never had this problem on this computer. I'm running a nvidia gt 220 card without the nvidia driver. Could this be the problem? I really don't know what to do about it. I was running the default kernel, but switched to the pae kernel as I have 4 gig of memory. Still locks up.
Probably should have stuck with 11.2 for a while longer, but at this point I would like to get 11.3 working. If not I will just go back to 11.2.

I have an auditing problem. I am required to be able to track user account modifications (creates, deletes, password changes, etc.) My team and I implemented auditd 1.7.17 and borrowed an existing rule set from /usr/share/doc/audit-1.7.17/nispom.rules. What we're seeing is that user account activity from the command line is retrievable by doing an 'aureport -m'. However, doing the same through the GUI, 'aureport -m' does not display the activity. So I have two questions:1. Is there another location I should be looking to find the user creation activities when using the GUI?2. Is there a way to make the activity using the GUI be captured in /var/log/audit/audit.log so 'aureport -m' can report it?Someone suggested a PAM configuration change, but was not able to tell me what change to make.

I'm running openSUSE 11.1, with KDE 4.3.00. My Kopete, version 0.70.90, disconnects and reconnects to my jabber server several times a minute.
The jabber server, running the latest version of Openfire, is on the same gigabit subnet as the openSUSE machine in question. I can successfully connect to other IM services (MSN, Yahoo, etc) with no trouble. I also have no trouble with any other network service, from NFS to IMAP. I have other (Windows / Miranda IM) clients connecting to this same jabber server, all without trouble.
It drives me nuts, and it drives everyone else on my buddy list nuts too, as they see constant offline/online notifications for my user.

I get all lines of other desktops screens scattering all over the pace. The compuz cube effect as exaple as you can see in the screenshot below. As you can see in the screenshot that below the active windows I get some weird graphic error. Before setting a second screen compiz runned just fine. I can only use my laptop now with compiz settings completely disabled.

I keep noticing disk activity every roughly 1 to 3 seconds even though there is "nothing" going on. Of course, I run a number of "system" and "user" application packages - Apache2, MySQL, Browsers (Opera, IceWeasel), an SMB client and server, OpenOffice 3.0RC8 being the most prominent ones. I wonder what might be the cause for this constant disk activity which happens even when none of the applications do any noticeable work at all. Is there a way to determine the process that does those disk read/writes?

I'm running Slackware 13 with a custom kernel based off of 2.6.32.3. I tend to leave my system on 24/7, as well as my web browser. Originally it was Firefox and now it is Google's Chrome. Usually about a day of leaving the web browser open my HD activity spikes so high that I can barely do anything on the system until I kill the web browser. This has been happening with both Firefox AND Chrome! As soon as the browser processes are killed, the system returns back to normal.

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit version and everything worked fine so far except for the fglrx driver as it seems. I wasn't able to enable desktop effects and couldn't start games like openarena or nexuiz.
Therefore, I installed the fglrx driver from ATI's site and got everything working fine. Unfortunately it introduced a problem with vlc and the window manager in general. If I go into fullscreen in vlc it takes at least 2 seconds until the screen reacts. Also, if I tab through windows there is at least a second delay which is all very very annoying. I removed the driver again and re-installed fglrx from the repos. I now have two entries for the Catalyst Control Center (normal + administrative) under System->Prefrences which is annoying but not the reason for this thread.
The main problem remains the delay with window tabbing (with desktop effects disabled) and vlc going into fullscreen (this also applies for ..... videos which also lag in fullscreen mode).
The card is a Radeon HD 4830, processor is an AMD Phenom II X4 810.

I am currently running 11.04 on my laptop. Firefox is struggling to cope with images for some reason. Whenever there are pictures on screen in firefox the computer slows down to a glacial pace.
I tried clearing out the history and cookie files, and i have tried uninstalling and reinstalling FF but the problem still persists. I have tried other browsers that worked fine with images, but didn't find any that i really liked.

I tried to do a scheduled software update several times today (8/20/11) and nothing seems to download, though I do get the "Downloading" PackageKit dialog message (the System Monitor shows practically no network activity). In between tries I downloaded some 600 MB .iso files (about 10 minutes each) so I know my internet is working properly. That leaves either PackageKit got hosed in my last update, or servers are down.

I have machine which I am using a server for all my office activities. We have fedora (11.0) installed in that system. When even power goes out system is getting shut-down abruptly. We have UPS for this system and some times UPS also runs out of power. Do we have any software, which monitors battery power and shutdown the system gracefully, when system knows that power is running out. I am using desktop machine, not a laptop. So I may some hardware like battery which runs fot sometime, even though there is no power. Then there will software which monitors and shut down the system gracfully.

My server is a VPS which is running with CentOS. I found a wield problem that the system clock always runs faster than the hardware clock. For example, I set system clock and hardware clock both on 20:00. After about half an hour, the system clock will be 20:34/5 which is wrong while the hardware clock remains correct (20:30).

During my last boot something installed itself that is very annoying and I would like to remove it. The upper right side of my desktop has a tab called New Activity and there is a translucent bar across the top. Now when I right click an item on my bottom task bar the menu appears at the very top of the desktop instead of opening just above the icon. This is an improvement? How do I remove this feature?
