Jan 9, 2010I've been having issues with my laptop. It's a Vostro 1700..My web browser runs very slow and every now and then the computer will become unresponsive. Sometimes it will not open application and will get: couldn't exe command GCACTOOL.I decided to go back to Windows XP to see if Ubuntu was the problem but it wasn't.I got error messages regarding the HD, soo I bought a new HD but the problem is still there.

Dec 16, 2010I've been asked to look at a system which is running slowly. It's running hardy on an intel Q9400 quad core CPU system which should be a pretty fast machine.
The most obvious symptom of this problem is that the terminal takes about 10 seconds to open instead of the usual fraction of a second.
What I've discovered so far is that the system has 2 network ports one configured to access the LAN and the other to connect directly to another piece of hardware using a different subnet. If the LAN is not connected the system runs slowly and if it is connected it runs at normal speed. It also makes no difference whether or not the second network port is connected.
I've looked at the system monitor and can see no abnormal network traffic or processes using a lot of CPU resources.
Fedora Installation :: Upgraded F12 Runs Slow?
May 21, 2010I've just upgraded my from F11 to F12 via software update and found F12 extremely slow to the extent that only the mosue cursor moves, the rest does not - not even opening folders or starting application.
My specs:
Core2Duo
1GB RAM
160GB HDD
It seems that
npviewer.bin is taking up up to 50% of CPU. Xorg takes 20%..
Ubuntu :: Laptop Runs Unbearably Slow When A Dock Is Running?
Nov 29, 2010My friend recently gave up on Windows Vista on his old laptop and installed Ubuntu 10.10 64 Bit on it. He came over the other day because I wanted to show him and install some cool things. One of those things was a dock. I tried both AWN and Docky. When the dock started running his system became so unbearably slow. Like it took over 5 seconds to respond to movements sometimes. When he closed the dock everything went speedy again. He has a whole lot of compiz stuff running now, including desktop cube/animations burning up windows when he closes them. I'm wondering why the dock is causing such a major slow down.
His specs aren't even that bad. He has a Dell XPS M1330 with the following specs:Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 (2.0GHZ)4GB of RAMNVIDIA 8400M GSMy laptop has very similar specs to his, except my integrated graphics card is an ATI 3200 and it runs AWN and Docky flawlessly. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? His graphics card was one of those faulty NVidia cards from back then but he already had it fixed twice and its been running Vista without any graphic issues fine since. I didn't get a chance to look at it again since then so I couldn't play around.. I'm thinking he might have possibly messed something up playing around when he first installed it. I may suggest a clean install and do everything again to see if the problem persists.
OpenSUSE Hardware :: 3D Vides / Sis_drv.o-402 - Games Runs Really Slow
Apr 26, 2010I have a laptop with a sis 650 video card. It works just fine except in video games like assault cube where it runs really slow. Now that could be because I have less than a gig of memory, but more likely it seems lack of 3D support. I found the sis_drv.o-402 file on the sis site, which seems to be a kernel module. This info came from an article that is a couple of years old. It, and other references speak of using "insmod sis_drv.o-402". I can not find such a command, nor can I find reference to it in the opensuse site. I also can not seem to find which driver I am currently using, and if it has 3D support.

Apr 11, 2011I am running my Ubuntu 32 bit server on top of Windows 7 64 bit with VirualBox. It's a 2 core Atom. It's been working good for about half a year. But the last about 6 weeks the system time only in Ubuntu is going slow. About -8 per 24 hours! I can only guess because I have more things running in my Windows 7 and Ubuntu.
I can set it right by coping the hareware time to system time with this command:

Ubuntu :: Slow Startup, Plymouth Not Showing, Slow Desktop Load?
May 3, 2010I'm an Ubuntu user since Jaunty, and I've always upgraded my system (NOT fresh install). Everything went fine, but yesterday I upgraded to Lucid. My only concern -for now- deals with startup time. I'm a desktop user (Core2@3GHz) so I think I should boot in less than 10 seconds. Anyway, boot time is 30 seconds - not too much, but there is definetly something wrong with tools I don't know (ureadahead, plymouth, etc.). Attached is my bootchart: can anyone explain me what's wrong?
Also, I don't even see a plymouth Ubuntu themed bootsplash: I only see a blank (black) screen standing for seconds, then I see the bootsplash for less then half a second, then GDM appears :S Not crucial -I know- but how can I fix it? (I don't know if it's related, but I can see the animation at shutdown)Finally, GNOME desktop takes too long to load. I don't know why, but there are 15/30 seconds in between login sound and a usable desktop (with panels and icons, I mean).Please help me, I don't want to do a fresh install. Boot speed is not a dial with desktops - I know - but it can be a symptom that my system is a bit a messy (and I don't like it, since I installed Jaunty less then 1 year ago). (!Forgot! Ubuntu :: USB Disk - Slow Transfer Speeds And Slow System?
Apr 17, 2011Whenever I transfer a movie into my 16GB USB flash disk, my whole system becomes windows-like and unusable!
When i drag the file(s) into the USB disk folder, it starts out fine and pretty darn fast (25mb/sec) then slowly decreases until it's unbearably slow (3m/sec) and as a side effect my whole system starts deteriorating. I basically have to wait for the file to finish transferring before i can use my desktop again!
This has been happening with every version since Karmic (all 64bit)- I put up with it because I don't use the USB stick that much.. but lately it's been my go to source for transfering large files to/from work.

Jun 15, 2011I have 2 computers connected to my linksys router via ethernet cables.
My main computer is running Ubuntu while the other is Xubuntu.
When both comps are on, the internet works fine, but when my second computer is off, my main computer has super slow internet. Sometimes it takes 2 minutes and I get "This webpage is not available", and then I refresh that and it finally loads.
Why does it work when both comps are on? What could cause this?
SUSE :: Very Slow Computer - HD Dying?
May 3, 2010If I start it up, and it's fast, it's like that through out. But if I start it up, and it's slow, it is slow like that for a whole time, and doesn't recover. When that happens, I saw the CPU almost 100% all the time. The hard drive light indicator would be on all time time. The top command doesn't indicate any process that use a lot of CPU. It just has a high "wa" percent. My remedy so far is to restart the machine, and hopes it's fast again. Sometimes it does sometimes, it doesn't. It always start up to the login screen very fast.
However, even before logging in, I can see it's slow if the hard drive light is on all the time, and not blinking). Even typing in the password would show a slow echo of the *. This is OpenSuse 11.2, 64 bit. The file system is ext4 (I wonder if it has something to do with this). Does anyone have any pointers on how to troubleshoot this? I may do a re-install. However, if the hard drive is failing, then I'll just back up and wait for the day it stops working.

Jan 11, 2010FTP from and from my home computers to 2 remote servers has become really slow over the past month. One of the remote servers I manage and the other one is taken care of by a hosting company, so I am thinking the problem is residing on my end. It doesn't matter if I am downloading 1 file or 10 files, they are all coming in at 9 kb/s which is really slow cause I have a 7 megabit connection. I've tried using multiple computers and still have the same problem. I am using proftp for the ftp server and filezilla for the client.

Feb 24, 2010My friends computer is extremely slow with all versions of kubuntu. Its very slow to boot, very slow to load applicatons, very slow to switch between windows, very slow to do anything. I can't think of what would be causing the slowness, its not new, doesn't have any fancy hardware AFAIK, but it runs XP perfectly well, its probably a 2.0+ghz pentium 4 processor. Do you think it could be a kernel chipset issue? Or perhaps a graphics driver/window manager issue? I don't know what the hardware is, is there a command I can run to list all the hardware?

Apr 9, 2010I recently install Ubuntu-studio Desktop and some other packages. And, I upgraded my System. But since then, the Grub has started to display (I have only 9.10 installed, using the entire Disk). Also, unless I select the entry, Grub does not automatically start. The startup takes nearly 1.5 minutes. And, the Login screen, after the installation of Ubuntu Studio GDM, is much slower. I removed the Ubuntu-studio GDM package, still it takes about 20 seconds to allow me to enter Username and password. Any idea?

Aug 3, 2011I first noticed the problem because my wireless internet will stop working. The usb stick has its LED constantly on but it fails to connect. I have tried some methods of restarting the networking, like "sudo restart network-manager", disabling and re-enabling the wireless and networking from the taskbar applet. I tried removing the module and restarting it. It might be a bigger problem because I'll find that things will randomly hand for awhile, like opening system monitor, or running terminal commands. They do eventually run but only after several minutes. A restart seems to get everything working again, but the problem comes back at random times. I am willing to solve this right now as I have time, just let me know what info you need and I will post it.
Update: Some more info I forgot to include. I am running Ubuntu 11.04. It just froze again, I tried logging in and out but the internet still wouldn't work and things were hanging, I couldn't get file manager open. I have even tried shutting down the computer and had it stall on the Ubuntu logo with the dots loading so I had to hard restart.....

Ubuntu Multimedia :: MPlayer Playing Videos On Slow Computer - Getting Blue Screen
Jan 21, 2011-Ubuntu 10.04 with MPlayer/Smplayer & VLC installed via the repos. -Installed the Ubuntu Restricted Extras package (everything except flash, extra fonts, & java) & w32codec packgae (medibuntu). -Computer in question is 800mhz Celeron, 256MB RAM & one of those basic Intel Integrated Graphics Chip. I'm having problems playing some video files. When trying to play these files with Smplayer, I get a blue screen but can still hear audio (default video output). After switching the video output to x11(slow), I can now see the picture but it's not playable (some video will show maybe one frame every 2 seconds, some video would play for half-a-second then just freeze). This happens mainly with large files (not 100% accurate, but in general files over 300MB).
Mplayer log gives the "Your system is too slow to play this file" & "Bad alloc:insufficient resources" messages. So I'm guessing this is not a codec problem, but a system resources problem? Is there any option, trick, tweaks, etc. I can use to play these problematic files or is it just not possible because of my system specifications? Is there a way I could tell mplayer to play these files with lower bitrates & resolution? Maybe this could reduce the resources needed to play?
