Jul 18, 2011I installed ubuntu 10.04 and then updated my system with gui, now it's running slow like a second or two sometimes for apps to respond? wonder if anyone can tell me what's up?

Dec 16, 2010I've been asked to look at a system which is running slowly. It's running hardy on an intel Q9400 quad core CPU system which should be a pretty fast machine.
The most obvious symptom of this problem is that the terminal takes about 10 seconds to open instead of the usual fraction of a second.
What I've discovered so far is that the system has 2 network ports one configured to access the LAN and the other to connect directly to another piece of hardware using a different subnet. If the LAN is not connected the system runs slowly and if it is connected it runs at normal speed. It also makes no difference whether or not the second network port is connected.
I've looked at the system monitor and can see no abnormal network traffic or processes using a lot of CPU resources.
Fedora Installation :: Upgraded F12 Runs Slow?
May 21, 2010I've just upgraded my from F11 to F12 via software update and found F12 extremely slow to the extent that only the mosue cursor moves, the rest does not - not even opening folders or starting application.
My specs:
Core2Duo
1GB RAM
160GB HDD
It seems that
npviewer.bin is taking up up to 50% of CPU. Xorg takes 20%..
Ubuntu :: Laptop Runs Unbearably Slow When A Dock Is Running?
Nov 29, 2010My friend recently gave up on Windows Vista on his old laptop and installed Ubuntu 10.10 64 Bit on it. He came over the other day because I wanted to show him and install some cool things. One of those things was a dock. I tried both AWN and Docky. When the dock started running his system became so unbearably slow. Like it took over 5 seconds to respond to movements sometimes. When he closed the dock everything went speedy again. He has a whole lot of compiz stuff running now, including desktop cube/animations burning up windows when he closes them. I'm wondering why the dock is causing such a major slow down.
His specs aren't even that bad. He has a Dell XPS M1330 with the following specs:Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 (2.0GHZ)4GB of RAMNVIDIA 8400M GSMy laptop has very similar specs to his, except my integrated graphics card is an ATI 3200 and it runs AWN and Docky flawlessly. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? His graphics card was one of those faulty NVidia cards from back then but he already had it fixed twice and its been running Vista without any graphic issues fine since. I didn't get a chance to look at it again since then so I couldn't play around.. I'm thinking he might have possibly messed something up playing around when he first installed it. I may suggest a clean install and do everything again to see if the problem persists.
OpenSUSE Hardware :: 3D Vides / Sis_drv.o-402 - Games Runs Really Slow
Apr 26, 2010I have a laptop with a sis 650 video card. It works just fine except in video games like assault cube where it runs really slow. Now that could be because I have less than a gig of memory, but more likely it seems lack of 3D support. I found the sis_drv.o-402 file on the sis site, which seems to be a kernel module. This info came from an article that is a couple of years old. It, and other references speak of using "insmod sis_drv.o-402". I can not find such a command, nor can I find reference to it in the opensuse site. I also can not seem to find which driver I am currently using, and if it has 3D support.

Ubuntu Servers :: System Time Runs Slow Hareware Time Run Right?
Apr 11, 2011I am running my Ubuntu 32 bit server on top of Windows 7 64 bit with VirualBox. It's a 2 core Atom. It's been working good for about half a year. But the last about 6 weeks the system time only in Ubuntu is going slow. About -8 per 24 hours! I can only guess because I have more things running in my Windows 7 and Ubuntu.
I can set it right by coping the hareware time to system time with this command:

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Desktop Initial Update Runs Forever?
Apr 21, 2011Yesterday I downloaded 10.10 desktop version and burned an image to a CD. After installed to a Dell Dimension E510 machine successfully (I wiped out windows completely), the first update found 315 items to update. After downloaded, ubuntu asked to reboot the machine. Since then, the machine is stucking on the ubuntu startup screen. I suppose it is applying the updates; however, it has been over 12 hours. Is it normal to take that long?

Jul 7, 2011I accepted the latest Natty update about which I was notified a couple of days ago (I don't remember exactly). I don't remember a new kernel being pushed out, but for the record I'm on 2.6.38-8-generic right now. I'm trying to interact with a USB compact flash reader and I'm getting ridiculously low throughput (less than 1 MB per second). Before this latest upgrade, I don't remember this being a problem.
Better yet, does anybody know what might be wrong and what I might be able to do to fix this?

Nov 26, 2010I have Ubuntu Lucid Lynx since it came out, and until now it worked fine. I am updating regularly. Today too, I installed everything offered to me by updates manager (I looked through the list and didnt see anything I wouldnt want to update, but I dont remember everything that was there), and it asked for restart. Ok, so I restarted. Everything seemed fine. Then I tried to look at a picture, in normal,default viewer, an huh. It took 3 seconds for the mouse to select the pic, then another about 6 to open the viewer (and we are talking about a 40 KB pic). That was slow, but I thought maybe it was an accident. But no, everything I tried since goes slowly, at about a quarter of speed as before the update. I tried to remove unnecessary things with apt-get autoremove, I tried to stop or end all processes that seemed unnecessary, with no result. I restarted thrice. Nothing comes to mind anymore.

Fedora :: Slow Response After F11 Update To KDE 4.3.1
Sep 30, 2009I have Fedora 11 installed on a Dell Precision M60 lap-top, running KDE. I've used KDE for years, but a number of issues with KDE 4 had forced me to look at alternatives recently. With F11, KDE 4 seems to be getting more functional, being more or less usable for real work... However, a couple weeks ago, I ran "yum update" and picked up KDE 4.3.1, and while it seems to have fixed a few more things, there also seems to be a regression in terms of performance - on this lap-top anyway.
Basically any window operation -- opening a new one, moving, resizing, even moving the mouse from one window to another (I use auto-focus) -- is slow, and during this time the CPU load from the "X" process becomes very high -- close to 100% according to "top". When not "touching" any windows, CPU load goes back to normal. I did run across some advice to turn off desktop effects, which I did -- it reduced the sluggish response slightly, but the problem is still present. And I had the same settings before the update, and performance was fine.

CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.70GHz
RAM: 1 GiB (not a lot by today's standards, but this issue does not seem related to swapping)

May 27, 2010Finally I updated my fedora 12 to 13 yesterday.I'm very pleased with some changes,even though it is not so obvious.However,I found that update my system through yum is such a hard work that I had to wait a long time because I got a terribly slow download speed.After some check,I found that I can't get access to ubuntu99.cn99.com and so on.Does anyone have suggestions what can I do now?

Debian :: Have Slow Download For Update / Speed This Up?
May 26, 2010I am using debian(lenny) on a pc coexisting with windows. I use grub to decide which o/s to boot.
I picked debian, logged in as a regular user. I selected "Administration" under the "System" tab and then selected "Update Manager". I had to provide the root password.
I was asked to insert Binary DVD-1 and was told to use smart update. I did at which time 16 files begun downloading at between 4400 B/s and 4800 B/s from the Security server. It looks like it is downloading a new linux image.
Is there any way to speed this up?
Fedora :: Running Incredible Slow After Update
Apr 11, 2010I'm running 12 (x64) on my dell inspiron 1525. It's been fine for 6months. Just updated it and now it is running incredible slow, I can't really use it, typing is delayed, opening prgrammes delayed, scrolling etc. The updates were just those that were flagged up on my desktop so I have no idea which particular update has caused this.

Aug 7, 2010Does anyone know if the Yum fastestmirror plugin only makes decisions based on latency to pick the best host or does it measure bandwidth? On my laptop for the last few weeks I've been getting super slow yum updates (3.5kB/sec), when I force it to use the baseurl it runs as fast as I'd expect (160+KB/sec).
So the fastestmirror plugin doesn't seem to work unless maybe it's measuring latency as fast but the actual download speed is slow. If so, fastestmirror plugin should really take both into account.
OpenSUSE Hardware :: 11.2 - Very Slow Graphics After Update
Jun 23, 2010I just manually updated my opensuse 11.2 installation. This update included the xorg-x11-driver-video-radeonhd driver from version 1.3.0_20091026 to 1.3.0_20100216. As a result now all graphics operations are very slow, eg. redrawing a large window takes around 1sec when moving it to another position. With the old driver is was very smooth. Vlc previously worked very well, now it is not possible to watch a video even with a low resolution. I use a Radeon HD 3200 GFX chip which is on the motherboard (Asus) and additionally I have a separate GFX card (Radeon 3870) in the PCI-E slot which I don't use on Linux - just for gaming on Windows.

After update X uses 90% CPU to scroll down a page in FF, OOo or even in text editor, either with KWin and KWin4. With KWin4 desktop effects can't be enabled in system config.
