I've just upgraded my from F11 to F12 via software update and found F12 extremely slow to the extent that only the mosue cursor moves, the rest does not - not even opening folders or starting application.
My specs:
Core2Duo
1GB RAM
160GB HDD
It seems that
npviewer.bin is taking up up to 50% of CPU. Xorg takes 20%..
I just want to know how to easily speed up my computer because it runs desperately slow. I am running windows Xp which is about two years old.

View 5 Replies View RelatedUpgraded from Hardy where all worked fast and the only annoying bug was a total freeze every so often. So I thought it would be good to go to the next LTS version and see if it works better. However it is very slow starting up. bootchart reports 2:44 min compared to 40 sec for Hardy and that is only the start-up. Then the real drag begins after you enter your password. It's been up to 30 min!!! before the system became responsive and did not have a solid HDD light.
So my question is where do I start troubleshooting. I'll include the bootchart and dmesg log. What else is needed to tackle this issue? I'm really in a tizzy here, since it's my wives laptop and she is not as patient as I am, to put it mildly. Do I need to downgrade back to Hardy
I've been having issues with my laptop. It's a Vostro 1700..My web browser runs very slow and every now and then the computer will become unresponsive. Sometimes it will not open application and will get: couldn't exe command GCACTOOL.I decided to go back to Windows XP to see if Ubuntu was the problem but it wasn't.I got error messages regarding the HD, soo I bought a new HD but the problem is still there.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been asked to look at a system which is running slowly. It's running hardy on an intel Q9400 quad core CPU system which should be a pretty fast machine.
The most obvious symptom of this problem is that the terminal takes about 10 seconds to open instead of the usual fraction of a second.
What I've discovered so far is that the system has 2 network ports one configured to access the LAN and the other to connect directly to another piece of hardware using a different subnet. If the LAN is not connected the system runs slowly and if it is connected it runs at normal speed. It also makes no difference whether or not the second network port is connected.
I've looked at the system monitor and can see no abnormal network traffic or processes using a lot of CPU resources.
I have a laptop with a sis 650 video card. It works just fine except in video games like assault cube where it runs really slow. Now that could be because I have less than a gig of memory, but more likely it seems lack of 3D support. I found the sis_drv.o-402 file on the sis site, which seems to be a kernel module. This info came from an article that is a couple of years old. It, and other references speak of using "insmod sis_drv.o-402". I can not find such a command, nor can I find reference to it in the opensuse site. I also can not seem to find which driver I am currently using, and if it has 3D support.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy friend recently gave up on Windows Vista on his old laptop and installed Ubuntu 10.10 64 Bit on it. He came over the other day because I wanted to show him and install some cool things. One of those things was a dock. I tried both AWN and Docky. When the dock started running his system became so unbearably slow. Like it took over 5 seconds to respond to movements sometimes. When he closed the dock everything went speedy again. He has a whole lot of compiz stuff running now, including desktop cube/animations burning up windows when he closes them. I'm wondering why the dock is causing such a major slow down.
His specs aren't even that bad. He has a Dell XPS M1330 with the following specs:Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 (2.0GHZ)4GB of RAMNVIDIA 8400M GSMy laptop has very similar specs to his, except my integrated graphics card is an ATI 3200 and it runs AWN and Docky flawlessly. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? His graphics card was one of those faulty NVidia cards from back then but he already had it fixed twice and its been running Vista without any graphic issues fine since. I didn't get a chance to look at it again since then so I couldn't play around.. I'm thinking he might have possibly messed something up playing around when he first installed it. I may suggest a clean install and do everything again to see if the problem persists.
I had F11 i586 installed on my X86_64 machine. I used preupgrade to move up to F12. (I had the space problems noted elsewhere, but eventually got all of the F12 packages installed.) Grub now has the following titles:
Fedora (2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686)
Upgrade to Fedora 12 (Constantine)
Fedora (2.6.30.9-96.fc11.i586)
If I boot to F12, it boots up to a point where I get garbage graphics and the system freezes. If I boot to F11, SELinux relabels and the system then boots normally. I'd like to boot normally into F12.

It seems I had no say in the matter. The installer automatically did text mode and it starts up in text mode now. I'm very new to Fedora, though I had Ubuntu installed recently but removed it because Fedora seemed a little more interesting to me. I'm on an HP Pavilion dv2807nr laptop if that helps.

When I boot with it however, I get the splash screen and no further.Any option I choose, ncluding the CD diagnostics and Memory Test result in the following:invalid compressed format (err=1)--System HaltedI'm certainly no expert, but am not a linux noob either, yet am at a total loss.Google has yielded many theories, but no solutions. It seems that this error is not exclusive to FC 11 either. Older fedoras, as well as non RPM distros seem to be intermittently effected as well.I have verified the MD5 of the iso, and have verified the cd against the iso. The disc gives the same error in another computer. I cannot access the on-disc diagnostics. XP runs fine.

I have a 23" Acer screen, but in Gnome its auto detecting as a 20" Acer display and the aspect ratio is wrong and the display grainy. I read the FAQs and am trying out some suggestions. Created an xorg.conf file in the correct place, contains the correct monitor settings but my display is still broken. Q. How do I force the kernel to read the xorg.conf file ?(PS: I'm kind of a newbie, have only come back to linux after a few years of using Windows)

All the files downloaded and I rebooted and it is all apparently working fine.When I do a uname -a command I get this response:Linux Fedora11 2.6.31.6-162.fc12.i686.PAE #1 SMP Fri Dec 4 00:43:59 EST 2009 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux.When I open a terminal window it says username@Fedora11:~When I run "rpm -qa" it show my installed packages all end with fc12, so I am sure I am on Fedora 12.When I used to run Ubuntu, I would just open the file /etc/lsb-release and it would show me what version I was running.What file holds that information in Fedora 12 ?

But now I've updated from F11 using the preupgrade tool which for what I could see everything downloaded and installed ok, that was until the reboot after the install had completed after seemingly loading F12 it left me with a black screen with a blinking cursor so after a few more reboots with the same out come I decided to see what the loading was stopping at and this is what it came up with

And it stops loading after "Starting atd: [ OK ]" I am going to try a CD install either tomorrow or the day after then I'll go back to F11 depending if it works or not.
I am running my Ubuntu 32 bit server on top of Windows 7 64 bit with VirualBox. It's a 2 core Atom. It's been working good for about half a year. But the last about 6 weeks the system time only in Ubuntu is going slow. About -8 per 24 hours! I can only guess because I have more things running in my Windows 7 and Ubuntu.
I can set it right by coping the hareware time to system time with this command:

"Upgraded" from FC5 32 bit to Fedora 10 64 bit using Fedora Live KDE disk, and unchecking the boxes to format drives with my personal data. In the install it recognized these as SW raid devices. One is raid 1, the other raid 5.
Now, it still recognizes the raid devices, and mdstat claims they are working fine, but I cannot mount them (mount says must specify a FS type, but that doesn't work either).
I had FC11 installed on a Toshiba Tecra A4 and when I upgraded via dvd, the system "hangs" after finishing the last gray bar(the bar flickers a lot at the last), keyboard ctrl-alt-del will reboot. I had used noapic and acpi=off before, but does not help now. Intel graphics, at first a flash about address collision.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from FC10 to FC11 yesterday.I had no problems using FC11 after I looked into the bootloader (not intuitive - Ha!).Tried to boot up this morning; and things seemed to work well until I tried to call up Firefox (added a few themes yesterday).The window pops open; but the computer freezes on the spot with an alarm (generic "beep", w/o the finishing "p").Tried it with Epiphany; and I get the same results with the exception of actually getting to the Home Page.Yum works for the most part - I reinstalled Firefox (no effect); but couldn't reinstall epiphany (keeps saying "there is no such package - did you mean 'epiphany'". No typos on my part - go figure). Doing Software/Package Updates (via System Menu) freezes the box as well.Did it with the system monitor on. It doesn't appear to be related to CPU Usage.
Had a FC10 liveUSB and used it for awhile (e.g. to check out the forums). After giving my ISP some grief about downloading speed, immediately received a note from their Abuse Department, saying that my machine had been infected with a virus and had been sending spam emails (post upgrade to FC11).
For some time, I have been trying to install fedora 14 on my pc, as I want a dual boot machine. It has windows xp already installed and running. I used liveusb creator to make a bootable usb. the problem is, when I log in and start the installer, it runs until I get the option "Select storage device". When I select the appropriate option , basic storage device, the installer screen disappears, and nothing more happens. I shall be much obliged if someone can point out the problem. My computer is a Dell optiplex 745 , 2.8 GHz with 512 Mb of RAM.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI must say, the RPMfusion version of the Nvdia driver package work better with FC10 than they did under FC9 for me, which is to say: they work at all. Still get corrupted output after a few hours of work, but I imagine that's just the underlying weakness of the Nvidia driver bubbling up. Either way, now I have other problems:
First off, the Intel driver for my onboard video setup has stopped working entirely. The attempt to bring up X on the Intel setup gets me to the KDE login screen and locks the machine up hard (poweroff required). A look at the xorg.0.log shows that the server seems to be stuck in a loop trying to determine the valid video properties for the session.
Here's my xorg.conf, BTW. I have it setup to perform different configurations depending on which DefaultServerLayout line gets uncommented (lines 4 - 6). If anybody has a better way of doing this, I'm all ears. While we're on my xorg.conf, pleas view lines 64-67 and/or 75-77. This is my quickie way of changing drivers (again, all ears) which brings us to the next problem, neither the nv or nouveau drivers work with my system. Interestingly enough, both drivers tend to fail in the same relative spot in the process, I think. Please refer to line 207 of this xorg.0.log with the nv driver or line 140 of this xorg.0.log from the nouveau setup. Either way, both sessions die with the same message: (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. Fatal server error: no screens found Gotta go, x session getting corrupt,,,
I am posting from my brand new F13 x86_64 system. I am, however, having some problems to get the system fully online with the software I use (I couldn't even update) because YUM (terminal, yumex, etc) is painfully slow. I am behind a really fast connection so I know the problem lies outside.
Is there some method to force YUM to use the fastest repo available? Ok, or at least to try another one?
I was forced to reinstall fc10 a couple of days back and from them the bootingup is really slow(takes more then 1 minute to show login screen). before the reinstall, it was quite fast. i dont know what went wrong.

I want to install KDE from fedora 14 DVD as my internet connection is very slow. It was a failure when I tried pointing the yum.repos.d/fedora.repo file to DVD to install using yum. Should I create a repository like what we do in RHEL to configure yum server(How to do it in fedora ???) Or is there any other method to install KDE repository on my system.
