I am trying to set up samba server on my box, and the easiest way seems to be to use the kde4 samba setting dialog. I need to run it as super user though. I tried
su -
systemsettings
but the window doesn't seem to appear on the screen.
My password doesn't work to enter super user mode in the terminal. this password works for all other administartive uses in and out of the terminal, just not for entering super user mode.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm running a Minecraft server off of a dell T110 with Ubuntu 10.1 installed, as I haven't had a chance to install Natty yet. The problem is, it's running very very slowly, past the point where I could say it's the hardware's issue.
I have an intel xeon (2.4ghz quad core) in there, with 2gb of RAM. 2gb isn't much, but the computer runs slowly even when the MC server itself is off.
I'm talking super super slow, like, the cursor doesn't even show up all the time. It disappears frequently and things take a while to render/open, a site like facebook takes about 20 seconds to completely load.
This is my first ubuntu install, so I'm kind of new to it. The only problem/solution I could think is that I may have installed the 32bit version on a 64bit processor. I don't think I did, butttt that's the only thing that occurs to me

I get this error for every program, so I do not think it is an error with the program. If fixing this will change anything like making it faster any help would be appreciated. Oh, I also can only run a few programs. I can't run things like WMP or itunes, and I think this may be the cause.
Just wiped Windows on a Dell Inspiron 8000 and installed Ubuntu. Most things going well but ran GIMP today and noticed the dissolve very slow. Think I might need more memory? I typed $ free -m and got this:

I take this to mean I have 500MB of memory but most of it is used up on something? Does this explain why opening new windows incurs a lag of a few seconds and my GIMP slideshow runs very slowly? I was a pretty good Windows user but know very little about Linux.
I recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 and I've been having problems with flash player. The problem occurs when I'm trying to play a video clip on You Tube or on similar sites. Video clips do not play properly, videos run slowly and with many interruptions, while on the other hand the sound is excellent and my internet connection is OK, only the quality of the video is poor.

I have a question regarding application/process execution and it's the following:
Is it possible a user application (which will regularly be executed at user-space) to be re-written as a kernel-module to allow the entire execution to be under kernel-mode (i.e. no system calls should be needed)? I am not saying that this is the right thing to do; I am just asking if it's doable.
All of a sudden, Dolphin is identifying .xls files as "OLE2 compound document storage (application/x-ole-storage)." I searched for xls in Configure desktop, file associations and it still appears as application-vnd.ms-excel. It does not appear as x-ole-storage.
Other spreadsheets (ods, xlsx) are still identified correctly and open automatically in the proper program. This is a new behavior, and I'm assuming it has to do with something I updated in Yast. I'm using KDE 4.6.2 under 11.4.
As a workaround, I added the .xls extension to the file association for x-ole-storage, which allows Dolphin to open the file automatically, but it still asks me to install software to handle the file type. I answer no and then the file opens in Libre Office.
Before adding .xls to the file association, I tried to get this to happen automatically by going through the open with other application menu and checking always use this application. This had no effect.
Yast->Users and Group Administration->set filter: system users.I get a very long list, including an account called "nobody".

On my dual-boot system, 11.4 and win7, Iped out the Doc and DL folders in my home directory and replaced 'em with links to the ones on the windows side. It works great except for one thing: When I open Dolphin in superuser mode and change the permissions to make myself the owner of those folders, the change doesn't take. I have debian lenny, when I run an application is slow to load (example: iceweacel open and it takes, I can hold him iceweacel work normally), I tried to change from gnome to another and the same thing, went down some services (samba, squid) and nothing. I open a terminal and it takes, I want to duplicate it and do it fast. The sudoers file is fine, in the log's nothing unusual, since other PC take long to enter samba.

I already checked the files /etc/at.deny (exists with users listed like "alias, backup, bin, ..." but not the user that causes the error-message) and /etc/at.allow (which does not exist but is not necessary, as far as I could read from the internet).
It seems I had no say in the matter. The installer automatically did text mode and it starts up in text mode now. I'm very new to Fedora, though I had Ubuntu installed recently but removed it because Fedora seemed a little more interesting to me. I'm on an HP Pavilion dv2807nr laptop if that helps.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a machine that will only run Ubuntu 11.04 utilising faisafeX mode from the Recovery Menu. the machine freezes up within 10 seconds of logging in using Unity or classic modes. I am using an ATI Radeon 96 series graphic card.
Rather than going through the Recovery Mode to start the machine from the menu = is their any commands I can use via the terminal to start the machine using Failsafex mode from the menu?
The above subject was one of the options I was given on the boot up of Ubuntu 11.04 (natty) after the message 'Your screen graphics card and input device could not be detected correctly'
I OK'd the message to run in low graphics mode.
The question is: What's causing this? I've had a look through previous posts with (apparently) the same problem, but the methods used were inconclusive, even though in some cases the problem was resolved.
Nvidia was mentioned - about deleting all references to it in Packet manager. Would this work? And if so, why?

I tried to install Ubuntu in my P3 computer so i can play with it, everything works fine but not after i reboot it. Now i got the user and password window on the desktop and drop-down-list of sessions, language, keyboard, date & Time and Shutdown button at the bottom.
Drop-down-list session:
Recovery Console
Ubuntu Desktop Edition
Ubuntu Desktop Edition (Safe Mode)
User Defined Session
With these 4 options, the third one which is the safe mode is the only option I was able to get through. Others are just desktop without toolbar or anything, right click with folder option are working though. Recovery console is just the CLI window but I don't know anything about Linux commands.
Recently I installed Ubuntu using WUBI. During installation it asked for a user name and password which I filled in. That user name and password are the same that I now use to log into ubuntu. But now I am unable to log into super user using the terminal. When I try to log in to the super user account it says that the password is wrong. During the whole installation process only once did wubi ask me to enter password and I am using the same password. My windows user name and password are the same as what I entered during installation.

I want to do this on Linux, but this requires me to run the program as root and I don't know how to do this. I looked it up online and it told me to simply type sudo reflash or gksudo reflash and I tried both, sudo says it can't find the program and gksudo does something then nothing appears to happen.
