I've tried watching ESPN3 on several systems using F14 with no success. Everything runs very slow and after a few seconds, I get a frozen screen and then a white screen. View 5 RepliesI've just upgraded my from F11 to F12 via software update and found F12 extremely slow to the extent that only the mosue cursor moves, the rest does not - not even opening folders or starting application.
My specs:
Core2Duo
1GB RAM
160GB HDD
It seems that
npviewer.bin is taking up up to 50% of CPU. Xorg takes 20%..
I just want to know how to easily speed up my computer because it runs desperately slow. I am running windows Xp which is about two years old.

None of these have any effect. I am running Fedora 11 with kernel 2.6.30-105.2.23.fc11.x86_64 on an AMD Istanbul node (Processor 2439 SE).

I've been having issues with my laptop. It's a Vostro 1700..My web browser runs very slow and every now and then the computer will become unresponsive. Sometimes it will not open application and will get: couldn't exe command GCACTOOL.I decided to go back to Windows XP to see if Ubuntu was the problem but it wasn't.I got error messages regarding the HD, soo I bought a new HD but the problem is still there.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been asked to look at a system which is running slowly. It's running hardy on an intel Q9400 quad core CPU system which should be a pretty fast machine.
The most obvious symptom of this problem is that the terminal takes about 10 seconds to open instead of the usual fraction of a second.
What I've discovered so far is that the system has 2 network ports one configured to access the LAN and the other to connect directly to another piece of hardware using a different subnet. If the LAN is not connected the system runs slowly and if it is connected it runs at normal speed. It also makes no difference whether or not the second network port is connected.
I've looked at the system monitor and can see no abnormal network traffic or processes using a lot of CPU resources.
I have a laptop with a sis 650 video card. It works just fine except in video games like assault cube where it runs really slow. Now that could be because I have less than a gig of memory, but more likely it seems lack of 3D support. I found the sis_drv.o-402 file on the sis site, which seems to be a kernel module. This info came from an article that is a couple of years old. It, and other references speak of using "insmod sis_drv.o-402". I can not find such a command, nor can I find reference to it in the opensuse site. I also can not seem to find which driver I am currently using, and if it has 3D support.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy friend recently gave up on Windows Vista on his old laptop and installed Ubuntu 10.10 64 Bit on it. He came over the other day because I wanted to show him and install some cool things. One of those things was a dock. I tried both AWN and Docky. When the dock started running his system became so unbearably slow. Like it took over 5 seconds to respond to movements sometimes. When he closed the dock everything went speedy again. He has a whole lot of compiz stuff running now, including desktop cube/animations burning up windows when he closes them. I'm wondering why the dock is causing such a major slow down.
His specs aren't even that bad. He has a Dell XPS M1330 with the following specs:Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 (2.0GHZ)4GB of RAMNVIDIA 8400M GSMy laptop has very similar specs to his, except my integrated graphics card is an ATI 3200 and it runs AWN and Docky flawlessly. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? His graphics card was one of those faulty NVidia cards from back then but he already had it fixed twice and its been running Vista without any graphic issues fine since. I didn't get a chance to look at it again since then so I couldn't play around.. I'm thinking he might have possibly messed something up playing around when he first installed it. I may suggest a clean install and do everything again to see if the problem persists.
This is a curiosity of mine, and I expect a technical answer, if someone knows it. Why the systems become so irresponsive when doing hard-disk input and output? This happens even if writing is done to a secondary disk where neither the system or the swap are stored.

Also it seems when I am on Firefox if I am connected to a website, I can navigate the website with not further trouble. But if I navigate away and try to go back, it takes a while. I didn't update, or upgrade or anything. I am running 13.1 and have been since it came out. This just started with the internet 2 days ago. Also I have a dual boot with Win7 and the internet is fine on Win7.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu Lucid Lynx since it came out, and until now it worked fine. I am updating regularly. Today too, I installed everything offered to me by updates manager (I looked through the list and didnt see anything I wouldnt want to update, but I dont remember everything that was there), and it asked for restart. Ok, so I restarted. Everything seemed fine. Then I tried to look at a picture, in normal,default viewer, an huh. It took 3 seconds for the mouse to select the pic, then another about 6 to open the viewer (and we are talking about a 40 KB pic). That was slow, but I thought maybe it was an accident. But no, everything I tried since goes slowly, at about a quarter of speed as before the update. I tried to remove unnecessary things with apt-get autoremove, I tried to stop or end all processes that seemed unnecessary, with no result. I restarted thrice. Nothing comes to mind anymore.

So i just finally installed Debian Jessie OS, replacing Ubuntu. But now it is running extremely slow. It's not internet connection. The internet speed is running fine (Videos load quickly), but it's like the system freezes every 30 seconds or so. A video can be fully loaded but still stops and starts constantly. Just browsing the internet, or non-internet things do the same also. I switched back to Ubuntu to see if it was different on there, but Ubuntu is running fine.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am running my Ubuntu 32 bit server on top of Windows 7 64 bit with VirualBox. It's a 2 core Atom. It's been working good for about half a year. But the last about 6 weeks the system time only in Ubuntu is going slow. About -8 per 24 hours! I can only guess because I have more things running in my Windows 7 and Ubuntu.
I can set it right by coping the hareware time to system time with this command:

For starters, watching movies causes one of my CPUs to go 100% when full screen. As you can guess watching movies doesn�t go smooth. It happens on every possible player. It doesn�t matter if I switch on or off compositing.

My questions is: How do I fix my grub with the live cd(fedora), I can't use USB or DVD because the computer doesn't have any?

View 4 Replies View RelatedFor the last couple of days I've been trying to install Fedora 11 x86_64 without success on my new machine, specs below. Intel Core i7-920 2.66Ghz MSI X58 Pro 7200 SATA Drive (can't remember the make) 6GB RAM So first off I tried install the 32bit live cd and that worked without any problems and installed fine. Only problem is I need access to the full 6GB of RAM so I really need to switch to the 64bit version.
I downloaded the full x86_64 install DVD and burnt it off. Rebooted and began the installation. It was going fine until it started installing the packages. The install seemed to freeze, although the mouse would still move. I left this for 10 minutes just incase it kick started again, but there was no HD activity or DVD activity so I gave up and rebooted to try again. The next time I started the install I had problems with it freezing while partitioning. I was beginning to think something was up with my hard drive or the drivers for the hard drives controller weren't working correctly (could still be the case).
After about 20 attempts with it freezing at various points I gave up and decided to try the x86_64 live cd. This booted with no problems so I started the install from the desktop. First thing I noticed was a kernel error pop up after I started the drive partitioning. Something about dereferencing a pointer in the kernel (0x20) (sorry no additional info at the moment, if needed please ask). This got me thinking the kernels not playing nice with my setup. However, it let me continue and copied the live image onto the hard drive. Then it started going through the post installation steps and this is where I got another kernel error (again I can get this if needed) and the window froze and all activity seemed to stop again. Has anyone got any ideas what could be causing these problems. I've also tried a CentOS 5.2 x86_64 version I had lying around and this had similar problems (although this does use anaconda as the installer too).
every time I watch a DivX movie on the internet my system freezes permanently. So I have to restart. I can�t recognize any regularities: it happens in periods of 15, 20 or 30 minutes....
I use:
-F13 with latest updates
-Nvidia 8600M GT with nouvau driver
Everything has been working great since January with one exception and that is the power saver mode thingy magig. Whenever I am not using the keyboard or mouse, the screen powers off after 5 minutes. When I am watching a movie. I cannot leave the mouse alone for after five minutes of watching the movie, the screen goes black. I'm not sure if the problem is my Nvidia card or Xorg or what. Any ideas how I can get a hold of this? Let me know what you need as far as diagnostic info. I actually have to leave for about 8 hours so.

I first noticed this in Fedora 14, and now I notice the same behaviour in Linux Mint.Does anyone know what might be causing this? i would like to know if there are any good ways to disable and then reenable (the latter is key!) the screensaver so that it doesn't start when i'm watching movies with xine or when i'm watching flash things online like through hulu, videos, or so on. it's relatively simple to have a script run that will turn off the screensaver before starting a certain executable. but what about turning it back on again when the executable closes? and is there any way to detect that flash is running inside a browser window and then disable that temporarily?
