Ubuntu Networking :: PC Runs Slow If Network Unplugged?

Dec 16, 2010

I've been asked to look at a system which is running slowly. It's running hardy on an intel Q9400 quad core CPU system which should be a pretty fast machine.

The most obvious symptom of this problem is that the terminal takes about 10 seconds to open instead of the usual fraction of a second.

What I've discovered so far is that the system has 2 network ports one configured to access the LAN and the other to connect directly to another piece of hardware using a different subnet. If the LAN is not connected the system runs slowly and if it is connected it runs at normal speed. It also makes no difference whether or not the second network port is connected.

I've looked at the system monitor and can see no abnormal network traffic or processes using a lot of CPU resources.

Ubuntu :: Laptop Runs Unbearably Slow When A Dock Is Running?

Nov 29, 2010

My friend recently gave up on Windows Vista on his old laptop and installed Ubuntu 10.10 64 Bit on it. He came over the other day because I wanted to show him and install some cool things. One of those things was a dock. I tried both AWN and Docky. When the dock started running his system became so unbearably slow. Like it took over 5 seconds to respond to movements sometimes. When he closed the dock everything went speedy again. He has a whole lot of compiz stuff running now, including desktop cube/animations burning up windows when he closes them. I'm wondering why the dock is causing such a major slow down.

His specs aren't even that bad. He has a Dell XPS M1330 with the following specs:Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 (2.0GHZ)4GB of RAMNVIDIA 8400M GSMy laptop has very similar specs to his, except my integrated graphics card is an ATI 3200 and it runs AWN and Docky flawlessly. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? His graphics card was one of those faulty NVidia cards from back then but he already had it fixed twice and its been running Vista without any graphic issues fine since. I didn't get a chance to look at it again since then so I couldn't play around.. I'm thinking he might have possibly messed something up playing around when he first installed it. I may suggest a clean install and do everything again to see if the problem persists.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: 3D Vides / Sis_drv.o-402 - Games Runs Really Slow

Apr 26, 2010

I have a laptop with a sis 650 video card. It works just fine except in video games like assault cube where it runs really slow. Now that could be because I have less than a gig of memory, but more likely it seems lack of 3D support. I found the sis_drv.o-402 file on the sis site, which seems to be a kernel module. This info came from an article that is a couple of years old. It, and other references speak of using "insmod sis_drv.o-402". I can not find such a command, nor can I find reference to it in the opensuse site. I also can not seem to find which driver I am currently using, and if it has 3D support.

Networking :: Network File Transfer Slow ?

Feb 20, 2010

Ok, the only thing I remember doing is changing out my hard drive because it went bad. I swapped in a new one and reformatted with Windows 7. (I can hear the boos and hisses as I type) Anyway, now file transfers are exceedingly slow. They are ~10KB/s when they should be ~40MB/s. The odd thing is that it mostly occurs on large files, but not all large files and sometimes smaller files are affected. Copying files from one hard disc to another on the server, as well as copying from the server to Win7. Local files are not affected. The problem does not occur on my laptop which has Slackware Linux on it.

Another thing about the problem is that when I mount a disc image on a virtual drive, access time is very slow and windows explorer is very unresponsive and often locks up completely.

I have a samba server with Slackware Linux on it and a Windows 7 client. DHCP is configured through dnsmasq. (dhpc-host=<mac address>,<computer name>) Every now and again, dnsmasq seems to conk out when I try to access the network with my Win7 machine. I then have to reboot the server, as my only access to it is via SSH and I don't have a video card in it. After the server reboots everything is fine until accessing the network with my Win7 machine conks it out again.

I've tried different MTU settings, different network cards on the Win7 machine(Dlink and realtek), various regedit hacks, but none of them produce any results.

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.04 Lucid Lynx Network WiFi Slow Speed

May 18, 2010

A lot of people have the problem to find themselves with Lucid Lynx 10.04 and experience massive issues when connecting to wireless - me too. As a service, here some relevant links which promise relief:

[code]...

I tried all of them, and none reliably worked. Every solution which required re-association wtih the AP helped for some time, but nothing helped for long. First, don't let yourself fool by the disable IPv6 trap - while it is "enabled" it is acutally not used by Lucid! I have a clean install of Kubuntu 10.04 on an AMD64 Laptop with Broadcom STA driver: 03:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4328 802.11a/b/g/n (rev 03) However I can reliably stabilize my connection for some time either by manually disabling WiFi with the hardware switch or disabling WiFi by software means and re-activating. This brings speed at par with Kubuntu 9.10 until some time. Can anybody confirm this behaviour?

Ubuntu Networking :: Amazingly Slow File Transfer Over Network, SiS Haunting Again?

May 20, 2010

I've fixed almost everything except this problem. My network card worked fine on Windows but since I switched from Windows, file transfer over the network using my network card is horribly slow, 30kbps max on 100mbps wired connection. I know my network card is working fine, and I'm trying to copy files between my Ubuntu PC and windows PC, I've set up Samba as recommended by these forums, I can transfer files when using wireless connection, but I still can't transfer files at a speed faster than 30kbps on a wired connection. And the funny part is, it's fast when copying files from Ubuntu to Windows but it's slow the other way. And I've tried this with more than 4 different Windows computers.lspci returns this for the network controllerCode:Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 191 Gigabit Ethernet AdapterIs there any way of updating drivers or something that I can do to fix this problem

Ubuntu Networking :: Slow Wifi - But Fast Connection On Network Cable

Jan 22, 2011

I have a strange problem that I cannot diagnose -- slow wifi. About two or three weeks ago, I noticed that my wifi began to slow down dramatically. The problem is the same on my ubuntu laptop and my ipad. But when I connect directly to the router with a network cable, my connection is fine. So it is definitely a problem with the wifi signal itself.

What I have done so far:
(1) I checked all of the MAC addresses connected to my wifi. I identified my tivo box, laptop, and ipad. Nothing else.

(2) I used [I]wifi analyzer[I] on my android phone and selected an unused wifi channel (channel 8).

(3) I changed the username/password on my wifi signal. I also changed the password for my router's admin privileges.

(4) I restarted my router and computer.
None of this helped.

I am using a Netgear WGR614 wireless router.

Networking :: Network Very Slow If Static Ip Settings / But Fine With DHCP

Jan 27, 2010

I've been using slackware for many years. I think I started with Slack 8. I know how to configure the network, I've had this same POS Dell computer for a few years now but the other day I tried to go to a different distro (first mistake) everything worked fine but it was not for me. Once you go slack you never go back! Anyway I had slack on here prior to the change and it all worked fine. I'm running slack 13 and all of a sudden my network is slow as balls! I set it up as I always have so I did some research and tried a few things, nothing worked. So i enabled DHCP and its fine now.. I have a dell xps 420. onboard intel nic. worked fine when i first installed slack 13. Anyone have any clue what to do? I would like my static IP on this machine.

Ubuntu Networking :: Slow Network In When Copy Large Files From Main Desktop Pc To Mediaplayer?

Dec 28, 2010

I have just rewired my LAN using Cat 6 cables. Download- and Upload speeds to my main machine are great :However, it seems my LAN speed is very slow. when I copy large files from my main desktop pc to my mediaplayer, I only reach a speed of 3,7 MB/s in Ubuntu 10.10 using SMB protocol to connect to mediaplayer. I use a Sitecom WL351 Router that works fine as far as I can see. Using my dualboot Windows 7 I can copy the same large files using same setup (same pc to same mediaplayer) I can copy with almost 10 MB/s. I appreciate a little protocol overhead in Ubuntu, but this seems to be a little too much

Ubuntu :: 9.10 Will Not Boot If External HDD Unplugged

However, if I unplug the external hdd (whether that be when the computer is off, or I unmount it and then restart) before I get to the dual boot screen I get an error message informing me that I have incorrect boot media, and to insert and hit any key. Some background: I have checked the bios and it is set up to boot from the internal sata hdd as the first boot device, and there are no usb boot devices defined. Prior to making this a dual boot machine, it ran windows only, and had no issues booting when the external hdd was unplugged.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Will Not Boot If Laptop Unplugged

Feb 18, 2011

I have got rid of windows 7 of my laptop and installed Ubuntu 10.10. So for the past week or so have done a lot o testing and stuff. Laptop I have is hp pavilion tx 2000 model tx 2130ea. Problem I have is laptop wont boot when unplugged but boots when plugged in. When it starts up you can hear the logo music but screen remains black. Now I have found what the problem is after hours of fault finding. Ubuntu detects the additional drivers to download wireless driver etc., and a couple of nvidia 2d/3d drivers so its when one these nvidia drivers are installed is what causes the problem when booting up unplugged. No problem when plugged in. At the moment I just have not installed these nividia drivers and all is good. Graphics Card Nvidia Geforce Go 6150.

Ubuntu :: BIOS Not Found - External HD Unplugged

May 26, 2010

So basically, as rookie as it sounds, I spent about 3 days trying to figure out why my computer wouldn't boot (BIOS not found, then it ran grub rescue) until I saw that my external hard drive (which evidently somehow has some file on) was unplugged. I am running windows and ubuntu 10.4 on partitions on my computer's internal 120gb drive. The problem I have is that during these 3 days, I re-installed ubuntu on the drive from the CD- so I think I have 3 partitions, even though the 3rd does not show up as an option to boot into from startup.

What it does show though, is on my desktop I have 2 mounted drives:
One 52gb one that has my Windows files in it, and one 44gb one that has ubuntu files in it, but NOT the ones I use- this is the rogue copy I installed by "accident". I checked this by looking through the contents and it was all minimal (nothing in home folder).
How do I "remove" this partition safely, and return to having just a windows an ubuntu partition?
