OpenSUSE Hardware :: 'Configure Display Settings' Icon Shows Monitor As 'Unknown'

Feb 16, 2010

I've just installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on a new machine. Because I was still using another machine as my main box while building the new one, the monitor attached when it was installed has a resolution of 1280x1024 @ 77Hz. I've now moved it to be my main machine and the monitor is a widescreen 1680x1050 @ 60Hz model. When I boot it normally the screen fails to come up - even GDM doesn't show. If I boot in failsafe mode the system comes up fine, but in 1280x1024 mode. The 'Configure display settings' icon shows the monitor as 'Unknown'. Couple of things I tried:

1) Switched to runlevel 2 and logged in as root. Ran Xorg -configure and looked at the xorg.conf.new that was installed, but it just had generic info for the monitor:

[code]....

2) While still in runlevel 2 and logged in as root I did a startx. This brought up the X display in 1680x1050 ok, and clicking on the 'Configure display settings' icon showed it had correctly identified my monitor and had set the size and frequency correctly.

3) Given the results of (2), I then tried logging in as myself in runlevel 2, did startx again, but this time the display failed to come up again.

OpenSUSE Install :: OS 11.3: Configure The Monitor Settings?

Jul 17, 2010

The default Gnome desktop now has a 1600x1200 @ 75 Hz which fit my monitor but is a little too big (or at least the font sizes are too small). I would like to switch to a lower resolution. I don't find anywhere in Yast how to configure the monitor settings. No more sax2, no more /etc/X11/xorg.conf? What does replace them?

I mean, where can I set which monitor I"m using (Targa TM4896-1), what are the screen resolutions supported, if I want hardware 3D acceleration (or not), if I want to use dualhead (Matrox G400 DH)?

Hardware :: Display Settings Hosed If Second Monitor Is Connected On Boot-up

May 5, 2011

I'm trying to get my secondary display (DVI-Out) working on a laptop (built-in monitor & external display) and I'm afraid I made quite the mess of it installing the proprietary driver only to learn that my old ATI card is no longer supported and having to clean that up and reinstall the original distro driver!Anyways, I reverted back to the open source driver and all is ok. That is until I reboot. If I reboot with the DVI display connected then both displays are brought up in 640x480 res and look terrible.

What do I have to do to be able to leave my DVI display connected when I start up the machine and get it to render the way it does when I plug in the display after the machine is running?I suspect I need to create an xorg.conf file but these fancy modern Linuxes these days don't come with one (or maybe they no longer need it anymore).

Hardware :: Monitor Dual Head Top Down Display Config File Settings?

Jan 13, 2010

I want to be able to change the settings for my top down dual head display. Basically one monitor sits on top of another right now. How it was setup before was that they used to sit right next to each other so when you mouse over to the right it would go to the new screen. The problem is now when one sits on top of the other I want to be able to just mouse up instead of mousing over to the right. I don't want to use the gui to be able to do this. I want to find out what config file and specifically what setting in the config file would allow me to change this.

Fedora Hardware :: Configure Display: Sony TV / "generic PnP Monitor"?

May 16, 2010

I just installed fedora 12. during the installation, i used a different monitor (as when i used the one that i want to use with the system, not all of the page displayed - so i could not click on the buttons) . now it only works with the display that i temporarily connected.

i want to use the system with a sony tv via hdmi. the system dual boots, and the tv works with windows 7 (at 1280*720, 60Hz, "generic PnP monitor").

when i try to boot fedora with the TV as the display, the TV is showing stuff right up until the login screen appears (X starts, I guess). then the TV loses the input.

I can SSH into the system with the TV connected, or use it normally with a temporary monitor. I have no experience of successfully configuring HAL or X. how should I go about it?

OpenSUSE Install :: Non-persistent Display Settings In 11.2 / Kde?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Network Icon Shows "lock" Icon When Trying To Connect

May 16, 2010

3 computers in the house run various windows based programs and everything is fine with them connecting to the internet as far as putting in the security password to log in and get online. My old back up computer that I use in the basement that has Ubuntu 9.10 was working fine with the secured network situation up until today.I booted up the computer this morning and it automatically connected as it typically does and I was reading some email and then the computer froze, which on rare occasions it does.

Upon reboot I got a window that asked for the password for the Network Manager Applet which I supplied and then it asked for the password for the secured internet connection which I supplied. It would not connect. After numerous tries of disabling the wireless and enabling the wireless and entering the Network Manager Applet password and the secured internet password I still get no connection.

I notice that when it is trying to connect, the window comes up on the screen that shows that there is reception from the modem, but there is also a little "lock" icon like I'm locked out of the connection.I finally found a way to get rid of the Network Manager Applet password problem but that still didn't alleviate the connection problem.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Save Display Settings - 2 Screens?

Oct 6, 2010

I have seen posts on the fact that dual screen configuration seem to be a nightmare with opensuse 11.3. As a few already mentioned, it worked all fine with 11.2 and now we are back to. I have two screens attached to my laptop: the standard LVDS and one HDMI high res monitor. It works fine to configure it once but it is NEVER SAVED so I have to do this at EVERY boot. Even more annoying: when the slid is closed, my laptop goes into "no display mode" (black screens) and when it tries to come back to life (opening the lid again) everything is screwed (to use a nice word).

OpenSUSE :: Display - Desktop Appearance And Theme Settings Not Working

Aug 14, 2011

I've been trying to get familiar with this over the past 24 hours or so. I assume I've been somewhat successful in what I'm attempting to do, as I can work my way around a bit now and use some terminal commands. However, there is this display problem I seem to be encountering with certain windows which is extremely putting off. When I click options like 'File' or 'Edit' in a window, this is what I get. Here are the screenshots below.

This is what I get when I click the 'Volume' button in the Panel at the bottom of the screen. I have tried changing the Desktop Appearance Settings, Theme Settings but nothing seems to work. Although this is not a performance issue, it is hampering my vision of the various available options, and I would like to resolve it at once.
