General :: Cannot Configure Three Monitor Display Ubuntu?

Jun 17, 2010

Looking for a newb-type step by step process for configuring ubuntu to 1) recognize both the onboard video card as well as the PCI graphics card and 2) how to set up three displays with separate desktops (able to mouse-over from screen to screen). So far the 20+ hours searching online has yielded excessively complex instructions, inappropriate instructions, or ancient posts. Is this config even possible? Again, I am learning so the instructions need to be very deliberate. PNY GeForce FX 5200 PCI 256 MB 2 Port VGA + S-Video Graphics Card VCGFX522PEB and an onboard display apdapter (Intel P4 Chipset 845GV).

OpenSUSE Hardware :: 'Configure Display Settings' Icon Shows Monitor As 'Unknown'

Feb 16, 2010

I've just installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on a new machine. Because I was still using another machine as my main box while building the new one, the monitor attached when it was installed has a resolution of 1280x1024 @ 77Hz. I've now moved it to be my main machine and the monitor is a widescreen 1680x1050 @ 60Hz model. When I boot it normally the screen fails to come up - even GDM doesn't show. If I boot in failsafe mode the system comes up fine, but in 1280x1024 mode. The 'Configure display settings' icon shows the monitor as 'Unknown'. Couple of things I tried:

1) Switched to runlevel 2 and logged in as root. Ran Xorg -configure and looked at the xorg.conf.new that was installed, but it just had generic info for the monitor:

[code]....

2) While still in runlevel 2 and logged in as root I did a startx. This brought up the X display in 1680x1050 ok, and clicking on the 'Configure display settings' icon showed it had correctly identified my monitor and had set the size and frequency correctly.

3) Given the results of (2), I then tried logging in as myself in runlevel 2, did startx again, but this time the display failed to come up again.

Fedora Hardware :: Configure Display: Sony TV / "generic PnP Monitor"?

May 16, 2010

I just installed fedora 12. during the installation, i used a different monitor (as when i used the one that i want to use with the system, not all of the page displayed - so i could not click on the buttons) . now it only works with the display that i temporarily connected.

i want to use the system with a sony tv via hdmi. the system dual boots, and the tv works with windows 7 (at 1280*720, 60Hz, "generic PnP monitor").

when i try to boot fedora with the TV as the display, the TV is showing stuff right up until the login screen appears (X starts, I guess). then the TV loses the input.

I can SSH into the system with the TV connected, or use it normally with a temporary monitor. I have no experience of successfully configuring HAL or X. how should I go about it?

Ubuntu :: Xorg Doesn't Detect Monitor / Won't Display Higher Than 800x600 On A 1400x900 Monitor

Apr 3, 2010

I installed Karmic on an older PC I had laying around, and the only trouble I am having is with screen resolution. It uses an old ATI chipset (onboard) for video, and it doesn't seem to do EDID correctly, so I can't display anything higher than 800x600. I have tried creating an xorg.conf, but it's still not working. How can I tell Xorg to ignore the fact it can't detect a widescreen monitor and display something larger than 800x600? I noticed the log says the sync's are out of range, but I am not sure how to fix it.

Here is my current xorg.conf.

Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "X.org Configured"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection

General :: Cannot Configure Second Monitor To Rotate 90' In KDE With Karmic Koala?

Aug 30, 2010

I could not keep this question from turning into a wall of text so I broke it up into these 4 sections.I have 2 monitors (DELL E228WFP and a DELL 2007FP) hooked up to a EVGA E-GEFORCE 8800GT 600MHZ 512MB 1.8GHZ DDR3 PCI-E Dual DVI-I video card. I would like to have the DELL 2007FP set up to the left of the DELL E228WFP and rotated into "portrait" mode^ with both screens sharing a common bottom edge.

This is ideal for reading PDF documentation or papers on one screen and then working on the second one.Steps Undertaken I installed the NVidia drivers (via sudo apt-get install nvidia-current) rebooted ran nvidia-xconfig then ran nvidia-settings. However, like many people, I could not get nvidia-settings to write to my config file despite having run it with kdesudo. Instead, I opened the file with Kate (using KDESudo) and then used the preview from nvidia-settings and just copy pasted it into the file and saved it like that. if I use TwinView I have both monitors working, but when I try to use krandrtray to rotate one of them, it is shown as one large monitor so I cannot rotate just the one I want rotated. However, if I set them up as separate X windows the second one is black and krandrtray only shows the main monitor. I am at a loss of what to try next.

Ubuntu :: DVI: Cannot Display This Mode Message On Monitor

May 4, 2010

I have a Dell monitor attached to a Dell laptop. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 x64.

Spec:
Latitude E6500 : Intel Core 2 Duo P8800(2.66GHz,1066MHz,3MB)
Base Options : 256MB Nvidia Quadro NVS 160M Graphic Card 1 S
Display : 15.4in Widescreen WUXGA (1920X1200) 2CCFL
Dell 2001FP (attached using DVI)

When I try to boot into Ubuntu with the monitor attached I get a DVI: Cannot Display this Mode message on my monitor. I can boot into Ubuntu just fine if I detach the monitor. Have tried with VGA, but to no avail. I have the latest and greatest Nvidia drivers downloaded from the Nvidia web site. Googling indicates that this is a Dell problem, however, I am not sure about this. It worked just fine on my previous laptop (IBM T61) and Ubuntu 9.10, so I guess it has to do with the laptop and not Ubuntu 10.04.

Ubuntu :: Using Only Portion Of Monitor To Display Desktop?

Sep 13, 2010

I have a Visio TV that I dropped and cracked the LCD display in one corner, for watching TV it's basically useless now. On a whim I plugged it into one of my computers and about 75% of the screen is still usable. Only the bottom right hand corner of the screen is messed up. What I'd like to do if possible is to define an area of the screen. Say for instance the top left hand corner across and down to where the screen starts getting bad.

Like a left click and drag out the good area and then make only that area "the monitor" for the OS to use. I'd then probably build a case or something to house it in and only show the "live" area to clean things up. I'd like to use Ubuntu. But if you know I can't do it in Linux but can in Windows I'd consider that option as well. I just hate to junk the TV if I can use it some how as a monitor.

Ubuntu :: Manually Configure Second Monitor For Xorg?

Oct 20, 2010

I just installed the new Ubuntu onto my laptop and want to use a second monitor with it in twinview.

I have to use the Nvidia X Server Settings and while I can get the second monitor working, I cant get any resolutions higher than 1024x768. But I know for a fact that I can get better resolutions as I used to use that monitor as my primary. I had to manually change my xorg.conf tho.

How do I change my xorg for the secondary monitor? if I add a new monitor and screen sections it breaks X and it sends me to teminal on boot.

heres what I tried The stuff I added is in bold:

Code:

# nvidia-settings: version 260.19.06 (buildd@yellow) Mon Oct 4 15:59:51 UTC 2010
Section "ServerLayout"

Ubuntu :: Dell E173FP Monitor Cannot Display Video

Feb 24, 2010

I have recently installed ubuntu using wubi on a dimension 9100 PC.When i boot up ubuntu I get a message that it cannot display current video mode when the GUI tries to launch. The monitor is a Dell E173FPb.From digging about on google it seems I need to edit the xorg.conf file? However, it doesn't exist in the /etc/X11 directory. Does wubi not create this file?

I then created a template of this xorg.conf with the "sudo X -configure" command. I then copied the created file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and editied the Monitor settings. however, I still get the same error even when I put in the HorizSync and VerRefresh settings shown on the Dell webpage (31-80 and 56-76 respectively).

CHECK OUT THIS THREAD INSTEAD: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...93#post8937093 I got a problem with my xorg.conf file. I'm just not able to add display resolutions. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 x86 with Xfce4 desktop enivorment. I got an old Nvidia 6600 GT. I'm on a 21" IBM CRT, and i know that it's good for 2048x1536 @ 75hz.

I know that it can handle 30-130 khz Horizontal and 40-170 hz Vertical.

I also know that i would like to be able to use 1600x1200 @ 85hz.

Right now I'm just not able to go past 1024x768 @ 50hz. I've installed the restricted nvidia driver from the popup restricted driver menu, also tried to downgrade to an earlier driver, did'nt work, then i upgraded again to the newest driver that was easily available through Envyng-gtk. Still no more resolution choiches.

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg just don't work. Nothing happens when i write it in the terminal.

Now i'm starting to get frustrated

Ubuntu :: 10.04 / ATI 5770: Dual Monitor - Corrupted Display

Aug 30, 2010

New machine with an ATI 5770, with a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid, 64-bit). What a mess! As reported elsewhere, the initial install sometimes came up with a black screen, or corrupted displays, different each time. After several retries, I had a display that was corrupted but barely readable. The installed Ubuntu booted, but also had a corrupted display, just barely readable. I was just able to make out the hint that I should use the proprietary drivers, so I booted into safe mode and enabled them. Afterward, the display came up correctly.

This is ok for me, as a long-time Ubuntu user. But it really is like a trip back to the bad-old-days of Linux: you really cannot expect anyone but a geek to get through this. And the is the LTS version of Ubuntu? I use two monitors, to provide a double-wide single desktop. When I log in, the second monitor displays random noise, and is entirely unusable. I have to use System-Preferences-Monitors to switch the second display off, then switch it back on, and then everything works fine.
