I have no clue why KDE is doing this, but whenever I reboot the system, the resolution resets to 1024x768. I really need to stop it from doing this. Also, Sax2 doesn't seem to be working and there is no xorg.conf file that I can see of.
View 4 RepliesMy default display (DF-770 monitor) comes up something like 1280x960. In the "configure desktop" > display I set the display to 1152x864@75Hz. Next I accept the setting after the preview. When I reboot, the display is back to 1280. Do I have to manually edit some file to make my selection permanent?
Sysconfig editor has a variable that starts off with 1024x768, but that doesn't seem to be my problem, so I didn't mess with it. How do I get my display preferences saved?
I'm running openSUSE 11.3 64 bit KDE 4 standardI have two monitors attached, running simultaneously, nicely, all is well.But when I reboot I have to set them up again because the settings don't stick/endure through a reboot.The GUI configurator that I use is at Menu --> Config Desktop --> General --> Display.How do I save the underlying settings and re-invoke them at boot time, perhaps from the CLI? Or some quick process that will do the job.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have seen posts on the fact that dual screen configuration seem to be a nightmare with opensuse 11.3. As a few already mentioned, it worked all fine with 11.2 and now we are back to. I have two screens attached to my laptop: the standard LVDS and one HDMI high res monitor. It works fine to configure it once but it is NEVER SAVED so I have to do this at EVERY boot. Even more annoying: when the slid is closed, my laptop goes into "no display mode" (black screens) and when it tries to come back to life (opening the lid again) everything is screwed (to use a nice word).
View 3 Replies View RelatedThe hardware is a Toshiba Satellite 755 with Nvidia graphics. An external monitor is connected via HDMI. The aim is to disable the laptop screen and only use the external monitor. This is no problem with Windows 7. With openSuse 11.4 (64bit), this can also be done via systemsettings. However, after each restart the laptop screen is again enabled and the HDMI only a clone (with the correct resolution), although the settings should have been made permanent. Is there a way to fix this?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm using OpenSUSE as a guest OS in VMware. Display settings are 1400x1050@60Hz but I want to change them for 1440x900. Using root account I go to Configure Desktop -> Display -> 1440x900. The first problem is that I can't choose 60Hz, only "Auto" or "0.0". I click Apply and the resolution changes, but if I reboot the computer or just logoff... resolution goes back to 1400x1050. My card and monitor properties: [URL]. Another strange thing is that if I click Ok on the Card and Monitor properties (changing from one resolution to another), I can choose to "Test" it, and xfine2 appears but... it ALWAYS says "1400x1050". View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to get familiar with this over the past 24 hours or so. I assume I've been somewhat successful in what I'm attempting to do, as I can work my way around a bit now and use some terminal commands. However, there is this display problem I seem to be encountering with certain windows which is extremely putting off. When I click options like 'File' or 'Edit' in a window, this is what I get. Here are the screenshots below.
This is what I get when I click the 'Volume' button in the Panel at the bottom of the screen. I have tried changing the Desktop Appearance Settings, Theme Settings but nothing seems to work. Although this is not a performance issue, it is hampering my vision of the various available options, and I would like to resolve it at once.
Is there a way I can save system settings and have yast revert to a config file in case I ever need to reinstall the system again? I hate having to configure the firewall, runlevels, samba shares, samba workgroup, apparmor, and all the other junk after every install. It's not like I install often, but should suse 11.5 or 12 roll out, I'd like it to be a snappy upgrade.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'd like to solve a little problem that I have connecting my notebook with an external VGA monitor.Everything seems to work fine, but when I close the laptop monitor, also the external monitor shuts down.I've tried to find different energy-saving setting for laptop display and external monitor. with no luck...My video card is an ATI Radeon Xpress 200M. On the ATI website there is no catalist control center for linux. (It would be very useful). So, for now, I can only use the display options on the panel.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've just installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on a new machine. Because I was still using another machine as my main box while building the new one, the monitor attached when it was installed has a resolution of 1280x1024 @ 77Hz. I've now moved it to be my main machine and the monitor is a widescreen 1680x1050 @ 60Hz model. When I boot it normally the screen fails to come up - even GDM doesn't show. If I boot in failsafe mode the system comes up fine, but in 1280x1024 mode. The 'Configure display settings' icon shows the monitor as 'Unknown'. Couple of things I tried:
1) Switched to runlevel 2 and logged in as root. Ran Xorg -configure and looked at the xorg.conf.new that was installed, but it just had generic info for the monitor:

2) While still in runlevel 2 and logged in as root I did a startx. This brought up the X display in 1680x1050 ok, and clicking on the 'Configure display settings' icon showed it had correctly identified my monitor and had set the size and frequency correctly.
3) Given the results of (2), I then tried logging in as myself in runlevel 2, did startx again, but this time the display failed to come up again.
I installed the nvidia proprietary drivers with click-install and everything perfect, I have desktop effects working but the problem is that when you open the config. screen settings to make sure everything was really good, I get to screen unknown April.
The maximum resolution is the correct 1440 * 900 for 19 "but the refresh rate by not recognizing the monitor down to 50hz me and gives me the option to 60hz as it was before installing the nvidia drivers.
How can I fix the display settings?
I am using GeForce 7600 GSNot using the Nvidia X driver message you know... I searched all over, and seen this problem on many searches but no resolve issues.I want to be able to connect my tv, I use to be able to when I first installed Ubuntu and now IdK.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently switched back to Debian after getting fed up with Ubuntu. The one feature that I haven't been able to get back since the switch is Wake on LAN.If I turn on the computer and watch tcpdump, I can see the packets hitting my machine. I don't think it's a router configuration issue.If I shut down from windows, WOL works.Another sign that it's not a networking or BIOS thing.Here's some stuff I've tried:When I boot up in linux, if I run ethtool eth0, it tells me that wake is set to g (which every guide I've read says is correct).Just in case, I added "post-up /usr/sbin/ethtool -s $IFACE wol g" to /etc/network/interfaces (as shown here: ewtopic.php?f=5&t=42049&p=244736&hilit=wakeonlan#p244736). Also added same thing for post-down.
In /etc/init.d/halt, I changed NETDOWN to no (also from previous guide) to keep my eth card from being shut down.Also changed /etc/init.d/networking to exclude eth0 (as documented in Added "pre-down false" to /etc/network/interfaces.. trepid+wol), to keep eth0 from being shut off.Anyway, I'm guessing that either there's another script somewhere shutting off eth0 or I'm completely wrong in assuming that's the problem. I've been googling this problem for a couple weeks now and I'm totally out of ideas.
I have done a big big mistake (I could beat myself up for that) with my netbook and now I am sitting here, not getting openSUSE installed on it.
I wanted to try another netbook linux and installed (more by accident than intentionally) Easy Peasy Linux. This system is not bad, but cannot work with the wireless adapter in my netbook. However, I then wanted to install openSUSE 11.4 again, which ran fine on the netbook. But the install always gets stuck in different stages and I donīt know why.
Sometimes a failure message comes up: "filesystem is read only, rebooting in 120 seconds", but I am not really sure if this is for the harddrive or the usb stick. In other occasions, the bootprocess until install gets stuck at "starting KDM". Nothing happens then... thats it.
I already have reformatted the usb stick and copied the openSUSE Live CD via Imagewriter on it again... no success.
So now I am really confused, because I donīt know if there is something wrong with the harddrive? Or is it the stick itself? How can I find this out?
If it is the harddrive, how can I at least refomat it? Remember: no CD or DVD drive, just USB stick...
How can I find out if the image on the stick is ok? I already tested the install media and it said: "checksum ok"
I have read lots about KDE (4.xx) freeze on OpenSuse 11.3 Live. Well I have experienced it first hand.
My hard disk which had Opensuse 11.3 (reiserfs) crashed. It was a dual boot and a windows upgrade wiped out the partition information. I am still trying to resuce with dd-rescue.
Now in the meanwhile I burnt a opensuse 11.3 Live CD and worked on it for a week. I was bit annoyed that every too often the cd drive spins....so I decided to burn a usb stick. Its a 2 gb USB stick. I followed the instructions to the toto to burn the ISO image. Then my nightmares started
The USB STICK boot was smooth. However when the desktop starts ...the trouble begins. I clicked on firefox...after about 10 seconds I experienced the dreaded freeze first. I had to reboot the system.
Everything was fine till i started Firefox, the system froze. Now reboot -> start -> firefox --> freeze cycle continued. I got fed up.
I then downloaded google-chrome. Installed it (after updating a couple of drivers) . It worked flawless. I loaded it with graphics...still no problem. Then started firefox .. the system froze. I even disabled all KDE windows animation, set only one window pane, still there is a freeze.
I took my USB stick off and rebooted the system though live CD. I started firefox on boot, NO problems. Opened many many tabs. Still no problem.
So there is a SURE problem with USB + Firefox. I SUSPECT IT MORE DUE TO NETWORK ISSUES THAN GUI (DRIVER) ISSUE. If it were to be GUI driver issue firefox should have fozen both with CD and USB.
Mine is pentium duo processor machine with 2gb RAM (DDR2). Intel chipset for video. I checked the MD5 of downloaded ISO its matched the one on the site. So the iso image is flawless.
All the threads in this regard suspect the video drivers, but I ALSO suspect the network. May be there is a wait() state in the network driver that is holding the process for way too long causing the freeze. Somebody needs to check this up.
The freeze is on USB stick boot only and not on CD boot.
I'm currently having troubles upgrading my 11.1 system. My SuSE running 11.3 had crashed, and when I tried to reinstall it I couldn't find the cd. I only have a 11.1 distro cd, in which I had installed. I want to upgrade to 11.2 since that should be the easiest, from then I think i can figure out how to upgrade from 11.4. I currently do not have any cd's or a usb flash drive to mount the iso image onto. I've read through the wiki looking for a solution, but even with updating my repos i still haven't found the answer.

i have just put a Geforce 7300 GT graphic card into my machine the problem is the max resolution I can get is 1024x768 at 60 hz the screen is a benq fp71g+. also the screen goes blank when i click on the display icon in system settings. i know that the screen can be run at 1280x1024 so I don?t know where the problem is.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been trying without success for the past couple of weeks to setup a filtering system for my little sister's netbook. The main problem I've been running into is inconsistency. First, I tried using dyndns per the instructions here: [URL] The problem with this is the DNS settings (and in turn the filtering settings) dont appear to 'stick' once the Netbook touches a different network. So if I sign onto a different wireless network than the one I used to set up the filtering, it stops working. The reason why is Ubuntu will overwrite the current DNS settings with those of the new network (I have no idea why, and am too frustrated to figure out).
Also, I noticed that even if the settings did stick, they're fairly easy to disable because all she has to do is stumble across the DNS settings, change them back and voila. I've had great success with OpenDNS on Windows boxes, but there doesn't seem a to be a feasible way to apply it to Ubuntu. Dansguardian looks like it may be worth a shot, but I've seen dozens of "simple" configuration guides, none of which that actually looked simple. So my question is this, what is the easiest, most bulletproof way to setup web filtering 10.4? Preferably something that a 12 year-old could easier find her way around.
I've followed the instructions at Live USB stick - openSUSE for creating a bootable USB stick. I have attempted this with both a 32 bit and 64 bit image. Unfortunately my system will not boot up the stick - it just loads my hard disk as normal.
Background info
1. I have checked the iso images against the checksum and they are ok;
2. I have used the same images to create bootable CDs which work fine;
3. My machine IS capable of booting a USB stick - by copying syslinux onto the stick, the machine does see the stick
4. The order of boot in BIOS is stick first. Again, I have proven this works ok using a utility called USB Boot Tester.
I am unsure what to try next. I recall reading on this forum there was a problem booting from USB stick if the computer also had a CD drive. That was in an early version of LiveCD. Could the problem still be extant? I can't find the actual thread unfortunately otherwise I would link to it.
I created a live USB stick following the instructions at [URL] installing openSUSE-11.2-KDE4-LiveCD-x86_64-iso and booting a Motion LE1700. openSUSE works great but any file I create is lost after I reboot. I created the second partition with the script listed the instructions. Is there any anything else to do to make the live system mount the second partition?

I have formatted the stick and I have set the boot flag in KDE partitionmanager. Then I have put the .iso on it, using Unetbootin. When I now try to boot it, I get the message

Is maybe the boot flag not set, despite the partitionmanager shows it set? Can I set it also afterwards, after I have installed the .iso on the stick (I tried this already, did not change anything)? Or is there something wrong with the .iso?
I want to install 11.3 on a usb flash stick on a netbook.the internal harddisk should be completely unaffected, meaning
- when the usb stick is plugged in, bios should boot 11.3 from the stick
- when the stick is not plugged in, bios should boot from the internal hard disk
I am unsure how the boot options in yast have to be set to achieve that.I changed the order of the harddisks to /dev/sdb (=the usb stick) being the first.I selected /dev/sdb3 (The root partition of the to-be-installed 11.3) as user defined root partition.do I have to select "start from MBR" and/or "start from root partition"? is there more to do to make the usb stick bootable?

Would anyone know what the error means, and what i should have typed instead? Is it because my USB stick is generic instead of being a specific type like a U3 stick?
