Fedora Hardware :: Configure Display: Sony TV / "generic PnP Monitor"?

May 16, 2010

I just installed fedora 12. during the installation, i used a different monitor (as when i used the one that i want to use with the system, not all of the page displayed - so i could not click on the buttons) . now it only works with the display that i temporarily connected.

i want to use the system with a sony tv via hdmi. the system dual boots, and the tv works with windows 7 (at 1280*720, 60Hz, "generic PnP monitor").

when i try to boot fedora with the TV as the display, the TV is showing stuff right up until the login screen appears (X starts, I guess). then the TV loses the input.

I can SSH into the system with the TV connected, or use it normally with a temporary monitor. I have no experience of successfully configuring HAL or X. how should I go about it?

Looking for a newb-type step by step process for configuring ubuntu to 1) recognize both the onboard video card as well as the PCI graphics card and 2) how to set up three displays with separate desktops (able to mouse-over from screen to screen). So far the 20+ hours searching online has yielded excessively complex instructions, inappropriate instructions, or ancient posts. Is this config even possible? Again, I am learning so the instructions need to be very deliberate. OpenSUSE Hardware :: 'Configure Display Settings' Icon Shows Monitor As 'Unknown'

Feb 16, 2010

I've just installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on a new machine. Because I was still using another machine as my main box while building the new one, the monitor attached when it was installed has a resolution of 1280x1024 @ 77Hz. I've now moved it to be my main machine and the monitor is a widescreen 1680x1050 @ 60Hz model. When I boot it normally the screen fails to come up - even GDM doesn't show. If I boot in failsafe mode the system comes up fine, but in 1280x1024 mode. The 'Configure display settings' icon shows the monitor as 'Unknown'. Couple of things I tried:

1) Switched to runlevel 2 and logged in as root. Ran Xorg -configure and looked at the xorg.conf.new that was installed, but it just had generic info for the monitor:

[code]....

2) While still in runlevel 2 and logged in as root I did a startx. This brought up the X display in 1680x1050 ok, and clicking on the 'Configure display settings' icon showed it had correctly identified my monitor and had set the size and frequency correctly.

3) Given the results of (2), I then tried logging in as myself in runlevel 2, did startx again, but this time the display failed to come up again.

Software :: X Crashed After Installing Generic Monitor Driver?

Apr 14, 2011

I am running Kubuntu 10.10 Maverick/Trinity, it has the KDE 3.5.x desktop. Anyway I went to System to add a monitor and being that my NEC LCD monitor isn't listed I installed the generic 1280X1024 driver. I re-booted the computer and it gets to a command line. No errors are given. So, I log in and I still have no errors and it is still in command line waiting? for me to use another command that I have no idea of what it might want. When I had issues (years ago) with Mandriva I was able to type in init 3 and I could work out my bug. I tried that with Buntu and I got bashed, it didn't recognize the command. Other than this the system has been good.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Configure Generic Remote That Came With A TV Tuner Card

I've been trying to configure this generic remote that came with a TV tuner card (saa7134) a while ago but I haven't been able to do so. The thing is that the remote works, in fact some buttons are recognized properly... but some are not. I'm not using lirc!, from I have been reading there is support for generic remotes in the 2.6.31 kernel, besides, i can't configure lirc, it doesn't let me load the kernel modules to start up the daemon for the ir. is there a config file for the button mapping of the native remote support in kernel 2.6.31?. Been searching it but couldn't find it.

Red Hat / Fedora :: No Display - Monitor Flashes Green

Feb 7, 2011

I have CentOS 5.5 installed and I'm having the problem of no display, though everything is working perfectly besides that. When I don't use the mouse for a while, the monitor flashes green, but then when I do finally move the mouse, the monitor turns solid green, just that no display is seen. How the situation came about is as follows. The display was working perfectly. I was trying to fix a friend's machine, so I unplugged the VGA cable from the back of the monitor (so that I can hook up the monitor to my friend's machine). Afterwards, when I re-plugged in the VGA cable from my linux machine to the monitor, I had no display.

Also, note that the machine is working perfectly. When I reboot, it boots up completely (I don't need to login as I turned this off) so I can ssh into it from another machine on my network. Another interesting point is that this linux machine is currently using a cheap graphics card and this is what the VGA cable is attached to on the back of the tower. However, the motherboard does have built-in graphics card, and I also tried hooking up the VGA cable to that... still no display. I should also mention that I tried testing the monitor by hooking it up to a laptop as an external monitor and it worked nicely. So the monitor is, in fact, working.

Fedora Hardware :: Frustrated At Display / Monitor Resolution

Mar 30, 2011

I'm a new Fedora/Linux user and I've just setup my first laptop to use Fedora 14. However, I've come across an issue and I've done a lot of searching on various forums etc and basically I'm going around in circles. I've had my PC hang already after I tried to create a xorg.conf file. I have since removed the changes I made.

I have a a SIS 771/671 PCIE VIA Display Adapter (rev 10). I got this info via the lspci command. The problem I have is that it's not letting me select a resolution above 1024 * 768. I know it has higher resolutions as when it was a Windows XP and Vista PC I had higher resolutions. There has to be an easier way to set a screen resolution that manually editing cryptic files and knowing refresh rates etc.

Ubuntu :: Xorg Doesn't Detect Monitor / Won't Display Higher Than 800x600 On A 1400x900 Monitor

Apr 3, 2010

I installed Karmic on an older PC I had laying around, and the only trouble I am having is with screen resolution. It uses an old ATI chipset (onboard) for video, and it doesn't seem to do EDID correctly, so I can't display anything higher than 800x600. I have tried creating an xorg.conf, but it's still not working. How can I tell Xorg to ignore the fact it can't detect a widescreen monitor and display something larger than 800x600? I noticed the log says the sync's are out of range, but I am not sure how to fix it.

Here is my current xorg.conf.

Identifier "X.org Configured"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"

Oct 19, 2010

I just upgraded to 10.10 64-bit from 10.04 64-bit and my external monitor is no longer working properly. Using the "Monitors" function in preferences, it does recognize my monitor and does in fact activate it, but the total available screen real estate is only increased by 10-15 pixels (i.e. my mouse moves to the external monitor, but it stops after 10-15 pixels). Thinking that something went wrong with the upgrade, I backed up my data and did a clean install from CD after format and the problem is the same.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sony FP - No Display But Desktop Accessible Via Remote Desktop?

Mar 18, 2010

I'm working on getting my myth box hooked up to my Sony flat panel display.Originally the nvidia drivers could not read the EID, so defaulted to only 640x480 over my HDMI-DVI connection.I manually updated xorg.conf with a mode for the resolution I know the thing can handle. Suddenly there are several resolutions avaialble in nvidia-settings and it seems to be communicating with the TV, as it is now listed as a Sony FP display rather than a CRT.I'm able to change the resolution now as expected.my problem, however, lies with the TV itself. I can't seem to get it to actually display the output. I'm able to remote desktop into the box and can see Gnome logged in and everything. However nothing on the TV itself. How do I troubleshoot this? Am I missing something obvious?

Debian Multimedia :: Extended Display With Different DPI On Each Monitor

Dec 14, 2014

How could xorg be set-up such that different monitors work with different DPI but still compose the same extended display?

I have a 15 inch laptop display extending to the right the main display which is 23 inch. The resolutions are comparable, but the difference in pixel size is very large. Thus, either the external display has too large fonts and UI, or the laptop one has them very small. Moving them at different distances is not entirely possible.

xrandr info:
eDP1 connected primary 1920x1080+2048+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 344mm x 194mm
VGA1 connected 2048x1152+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 510mm x 287mm

I heard that Windows has a hack (which I can't check) for extending displays with different pixels sizes: it computes in which of the displays a window has most of it's surface and sets the DPI for that window based on that. Thus a window will change DPI when crossing monitors, (and will look too small/large on one of the monitors if it is in the middle).

Ubuntu :: DVI: Cannot Display This Mode Message On Monitor

May 4, 2010

I have a Dell monitor attached to a Dell laptop. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 x64.

Spec:
Latitude E6500 : Intel Core 2 Duo P8800(2.66GHz,1066MHz,3MB)
Base Options : 256MB Nvidia Quadro NVS 160M Graphic Card 1 S
Display : 15.4in Widescreen WUXGA (1920X1200) 2CCFL
Dell 2001FP (attached using DVI)

When I try to boot into Ubuntu with the monitor attached I get a DVI: Cannot Display this Mode message on my monitor. I can boot into Ubuntu just fine if I detach the monitor. Have tried with VGA, but to no avail. I have the latest and greatest Nvidia drivers downloaded from the Nvidia web site. Googling indicates that this is a Dell problem, however, I am not sure about this. It worked just fine on my previous laptop (IBM T61) and Ubuntu 9.10, so I guess it has to do with the laptop and not Ubuntu 10.04.

Ubuntu :: Using Only Portion Of Monitor To Display Desktop?

Sep 13, 2010

I have a Visio TV that I dropped and cracked the LCD display in one corner, for watching TV it's basically useless now. On a whim I plugged it into one of my computers and about 75% of the screen is still usable. Only the bottom right hand corner of the screen is messed up. What I'd like to do if possible is to define an area of the screen. Say for instance the top left hand corner across and down to where the screen starts getting bad.

Like a left click and drag out the good area and then make only that area "the monitor" for the OS to use. I'd then probably build a case or something to house it in and only show the "live" area to clean things up. I'd like to use Ubuntu. But if you know I can't do it in Linux but can in Windows I'd consider that option as well. I just hate to junk the TV if I can use it some how as a monitor.
