Tried installing latest NVIDIA driver (NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-180.29-pkg2) from NVIDIA website for this video card, and the display was not appearing correctly. There was a lot of garbage at the top of the monitor. Half of the desktop screen was missing.
I have a problem with getting the picture to display properly on my HDTV. Using the regular driver (whichever that is) the picture displays flawlessly, but when I'm using the NVIDIA driver it displays really weird. URL...As you can see the top and the right of the picture is missing, and there is a large black bar to the left of it.Since it only does this with the NVIDIA driver I guess the driver is at fault here. The graphics card is a 8400GS and I'm running Xubuntu 10.10. The HDTV has a native resolution of 1366x768, and I've connected to it using HDMI.
I have tried messing around with overscan compensation in nvidia-settings, but it didn't help much.What can I do to fix this?
I installed google-earth (newest) and when it failed to work I tried adding the /usr/google-earth dir to the library path via /etc/ld.so.conf.d/google-earth.conf ( i made this file and added the /usr/google-earth dir to it) this didn't work and I found the correct work around to remove the included libs in the /usr/google-earth dir forgetting to remove the first workaround i did.
now it gets weird... a little while after I ran gthumb and it crashed... run it in a terminal and I see it complaining about the same files as google earth was before ... uh oh i thought and removed my fix and rebooted... well X wouldn't start after that and I thought maybe I have to rebuild /etc/ld.so.cache so I ran ldconfig and reboot and now everythign works great EXCEPT when I open the "Computer" or Trash Icon from the desktop or menu the background is white (normally black) until i click view->compact or view->icon and it goes back to black... this repeats everytime I open the window and all newly open windowsI created a new user to test to see it it was profile related and the new user has the same behaviour.Fedora 12 (upgraded since fc7)Edit: I see this in ~/.xsession-errors

I went back to Suse 11.2, it comes with the 'nv' driver for my NVIDIA Quadro2 Pro (64 MB) and I'm getting some slow performance on browser display and sometimes video playing. Not always, I recently saw a 2 hr long movie on Blue Ray resolution, so the problem is not hardware, it's software. I saw several links here on how to install other drivers and a 1-click install link on this page but my question is, since this is an old card... which driver is the best for this card ?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have installed fedora 8 on my cPCI based system [URL]. It seems to have 256MB RAM. Once I login as root in text editor mode, I typed init 5. But the graphical display appears very blur. I changed the monitor, but still same result. One more observation I made is, after 10mins it used to enter into screen saver mode (blank screen), but when I pressed some button, the graphical display appeared with full colors. But now even this is not happening. The system just goes into some state after init 5, where my the display goes blank and even the keyboard doesn't work.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a couple things I think is my video card. One annoying thing it does is to put half inch square boxes in random places and times that might be trying to display what was in that spot before you changed the window. Sometimes it can be important information so I had to find a way to do something about it. I couldn't get rid of them but I could move them out of the way by moving the pointer to a different area and turning the scroll wheel. That would put the square in the new area where the pointer was.
The other thing is very bad scroll control. Sometimes I would have to use the arrows in the corner. Sometimes I had to drag the slider which moved hard, not at all or very delayed. The squares also make highlighting very difficult. Because an area will not be highlighted you don't know the results until you paste it. It might be perfect. I believe the video card is on the motherboard. I do have a spare slot so If needed I could put in a new one. Where is my title bar at the top of a screen which allows you to move it around or -minimize or maximize or close.
I am having problems with Thunderbird in Ubuntu Lucid. I am not sure since when. It could have been since I upgraded to Lucid from Karmic. When I open Thunderbird, a message pops up that is supposed to ask me for the password. However, it is all blank inside and doesn't display the text. I found that after I click on ALT+TAB a few times, the message displays correctly. This is very strange. Is anyone else having (or had) the same problem? Does anyone have an idea for a fix?I tried uninstalling and then reinstalling but it didn't work out (I didn't "purge" though).

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop that doesn't display correctly since installing F10 x86-64. Instead of using the i810 driver, I see the experimental intel driver. I am running on a Dell D630 laptop with the default intel integrated graphics.
Just to note: Running gnome. I tried KDE and I can actually get this to work and display in 1600x1200. I don't want, "well use kde then" to be the solution. Also, in gnome, if I go to the screen resolution option from the menu, the mirron screens is clicked. Even when I detect monitors and unselect the mirror screens and pick the correct resolution, when I click OK, the screen flickers, and I go back to the same screen with the original default values? Wierd.
I got the bright idea to install system-config-display (something like that), which installed fine. I then changed my default resolution to 800x640 just to try it (really want 1600x1200). Well, I decided to reboot. Not the laptop doesn't start, it stops right after loading anaconda, and just won't go any further.
So two questions:
1. What do I need to change to get the laptop to actually boot?
2. How to get the external monitor to display in 1600x1200.
I recently installed KDE and began using that instead of Unity (less buggy, IMHO) and it was running smoothly until I began configuring my GTK applications for transition in that. I installed the Oxygen-GTK them from gnome-look.org and set that as my default theme for GTK applications under the KDE appearance preferences.
When I log in, however, GTK applications just use the stock Xorg theme until I run "gnome-appearance-properties" in my terminal.I believe that a fix involving .gtkrc would suffice, but I honestly cannot configure it no matter how hard I try.
I'm running Kubuntu and have tested flash video sites with firefox, chromium and rekonq. I have installed all the available packages from Software Management but flash videos still don't display correctly. All get is a small rectangle of video on the bottom left hand side of the video box (which is otherwise grey).

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded my computer from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 (beta2) restarted and the splash was screwed i thought meh i can live with it then went into my account switched to tty1(ctrl+alt+F1) and it was the same. got annoyed now asking had anyone else encountered/know how to fix this problem. pictures attached sorry for bad quality took on phone, but that is how it really looks.
View 9 Replies View Relatedinstalling a Linux distro on an old mac to make a simple desktop home computer details below.The Scenario: I am trying to breath a couple more years of life into a computer illiterate friend's Mac G4 [POS] computer, it is a paper weight but all he needs is a basic desktop and an web machine and he can't be made to buy a new one unless all other options are exhausted.
The computer: Is a Mac G4 power-PC architecture, 450 MHz, 18 GB HDD, 1024 Mb ram ugly little thing that was gotten for free it currently has mac OS 10.2 [unsupported] and newer OS-X (he is more familiarized with Mac) don't run on power-PC. Currently web pages don't display correctly, flash and other plug-ins and web scripts don't operate and it is very clunky with software bloat.
My solution? Is to install Linux so he can have a trim clean operating system. Ubuntu 10.04 [community ppc variant] runs off a live CD but is dead slow on account of the low processor power and I was unable to get gnash to run flash video a necessity as Adobe has abandoned power-PC, I suspect the gnash error is between chair and keyboard, advice is welcome. I would like to install a distro more suited to this system currently I am looking at mintPPC but can't quite follow the installation instructions what is meant by Debian squeeze the download link gives me a mini.iso is this the same thing? Also clarification on the terminal commands would be of help. Advice on a different distro is also welcome preferably one with an all in one installing process rather than the mint, Debian, Ubuntu multi-part thingy that mintPPC is; it just needs to be power PC compatible and able to run on a few hundred MHz maybe there is an easy way to put LXDE or Xcfe on a more popular Disto? As for me: I am a new Linux convert, discovering the glory this past July and am still learning my way around I am computer literate and somewhat savvy but I am not a tech head and I HATE working on them I can and do it but I don't like it and I am often hampered by ignorance of the latest new/trends and an acute allergy to Macs and Apple products in general.
I recently dist-upgraded from Debian 5 to 6 (squeeze). Since then, the xclock I run from my window manager's start script isn't displaying correctly (it displays only a "0"). The thing is, if I run the same command in my start script in my terminal, it works just fine, as it has always done...
I use this rather "old" X applications because I like my programs simple/not buggy/fast, and it's resulting a rather annoying problem (being that apparently nobody else has it...).
All other programs in my start script (gnome-terminal, emacs, xmodmap, etc) are working with no problems whatsoever.

I've installed the proper driver (I think), using ndiswrapper, and have blacklisted the conflicting driver (called ssb) to the 50-blacklist.conf file in /etc/modprobe.d/. My problem is that the ssb driver is still appearing as an alternate driver when I use the command ndiswrapper -l in the terminal. Where do I go from here? Am I correct that the ssb driver is not blacklisted correctly?

However, when I view it I get a video box, but it is grey and will not play a video. I keep playing with the various attributes but the result always seems to be the same. I also tried it on a Windows box with Firefox 3.5 (to make sure it didn't have something to do with my Linux config) but the results were the same.
I have gotten my project ubuntu server 10.04 up and running and logged in remotely with a terminal emulator program called AccuTerm that I use from work. It has multiple control files and want to know which file works best with ubuntu server. My reason for asking is some of the manual pages do not display correctly and keyboard functions seem to function incorrectly via VT100 and I have eighteen to choose from?

View 7 Replies View RelatedAfter a fresh install of Slackware64-current could not get X to start correctly with the nouveau driver. When ever X started display was scrambled. Only kde would partially work with desktop effects enabled, but very slow. Without desktop effects enable kde was also scrambled. After trying several things and googling came up with the following. To get X to work created a nouveau-kms.conf file in /etc/modprobe.d with the following text.
Code: options nouveau noaccel=1 The one draw back to this solution is that Kde will not start with desktop effects enabled. Hopefully this will help someone else with similar problems. Maybe someone else has a better solution. video card: Nvidia Geforce 6150se nForce430
If I take out the existing video card and put in another one of a different type (but not a different brand), how does Ubuntu behave? I know what Windows typically does. Windows starts up the screen using a default video driver which is at least 1024 by 768 and then asks you what this new bit of hardware is and asks where the drivers are. I'm pretty sure Ubuntu has default drivers of its own, but I don't know what their resolution is.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed Linux Mint 9 as a dual boot install with Win XP. Trying to activate wireless network card driver and video driver. Pops up: "You are not authorized to perform this action".How do I get authorized?
Now every time I boot Win XP, the Internet Explorer menu bar is all blacked out and goofy. If I log out and back in it corrects itself. If I reboot it's blacked out again. Re-installed IE8. Still blacks out.Also Firefox in Win XP crashes expectantly. It has NEVER crashed on me previously.
I installed Debian recently, and everything seems to be working fine, except some video games are unusually slow compared to what they would normally be. Tremulous, for example, worked reasonably fine on this computer with Windows XP, but now (Debian) for some reason it's laggy even on the title screen.
Something wrong with my video drivers?

The Fedora 14 (and 13) pwc Philips Webcam Driver.is only supporting 160x120 resolution (and nothing higher such as 640x480). Also not supporting some other things correctly, I suspect.I say so having tested multiple web camera software and either they don't work (because they have no setting for low res) or they do work if settable to low res., but not for any higher res.I also have a working setpwc tool which shows the driver does not support framerate resetting.I have a Toucam and Toucam Pro - same for both.Also these units worked fine under Fedora 11, and under earlier versions even Red Hat 4.But I usually got the latest pwc from Saillaird.org and compiled it to get full support but there are no more current sources there anymore, and the older ones don't compile.But as I am saying under F11 it was fully correct, now under F13 and 14 it is broken.

The latest driver I can find is: Intel(R) Graphics Driver - Linux*[IntelGraphics_060704.tar.gz] dated 12/17/2004 Version 20041217 When I started to install this driver I got a message that said that it was compatible with kernel version 2.4.(+ numbers I don't remember) So I stopped the installation. My question is what will / could happen if I go ahead and try to complete the driver install? Will I hose the entire system? I am fiddling with the kernel if I continue to install the driver.
IF it does break, would it be possible to undo the driver install using the text based root console with networking via the recovery option or will that too be inoperable if I hose the system. Should it break and I can get to the recovery option and open a terminal. How would i uninstall it? I am just getting reacquainted with Linux again after 20 years. I am not using the advanced package management tool to install the driver. The driver has it's own installation script. (have not looked to see if it has an uninstall script in the file list) I won't be able apt-get remove or dpkg purge anything.
I'm sure I sound like a broken record, but I've had Maverick installed for a few days and haven't had any sound output to go along with it. I've uninstalled and reinstalled pulse and alsa a few times over, with no success. Here are my aplay and lspci outputs:

SOLVED: Via terminal: sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf At the very end, add a line which says: options snd-hda-intel model=touchsmart
It seems like depending on your type of computer, all you need to do to fix many of the sound issues is change "touchsmart" to whatever you are using (laptop, toshiba, etc.).
Just installed the LXDE spin of 13 onto my acer aspire netbook. Couldn't make a usb boot stick, finally succeeded with an external card reader and unetbootin. Anyway, GXine isn't working, though it says its configured correctly. I'm very new to fedora and linux in general, played a bit with ubuntu 9.10.
