Hardware :: Strange Noise Coming From Laptop When Scrolling - Moving Windows / Stop It?
May 13, 2010
I'm having a very faint but noticeable electric-like buzzing/grinding. It is not the hard drive but sounds very similar.
It occurs when i move scroll bars, or drag windows. It is highly replicable.
The only other time this has happens is when i install KDE which resulted in me reinstalling. Something id prefer to avoid. I haven't installed KDE this time, but this seems to have started immediately after replacing my fstab file which i accidentally deleted. That's the only thing i can think of.

I have just installed squeeze 6.0.2 amd64 and noticed when I use k3b to burn/verify a disc, when it has finished burning the media it plays a sound, and rather sound is played which sounds very crackly/muffled.I do not remember this on ubuntu, and I cannot say for sure but I dont recall this happening on squeeze 6.0.1.
Sound plays perfectly in all other applications, no problems whatsoever. This is not a big deal, I just dont remember this happening. I know this isnt the most detailed posting but does anyone have any idea what this could be? I even tried to reinstall k3b through synaptics and the problem still persists.

I just installed Linux Multimedia Studio but I can not get any proper sound from my speakers. The only sound I hear is a weird noise. What is the minimum performance to run this application. I have a Compaq Presario pentium 3 with 512mb ram.

My computer fan sounds very much on certain Linux distro's.
On some it nearly doesn't sound at all.
The ones I've tried which sounds alot:
Arch with KDE and Xfce
Chrunchbang with Openbox
Fedora 15
The ones who the computer fan nearly doesn't sound at all:
Ubuntu 11.04
Mint 11
Xubuntu 11.04
Does anybody have an idea why my fan is very quiet on the Ubuntu distros.
I acually would like to use Arch but I really hate when the fan makes alot of noise.
And I don't really understand why Chrungbang sound alot neither. It uses Openbox which is very light on resources and also Chrunchbang is based on Debian which Ubuntu is as well.

On one Ubuntu desktop 10.04 I got an ati 4800 series using the proprietary drivers. All was working well until a reboot a couple of days ago. I am not sure if it had something to do with one of the massive updates I installed on that day. After that, operations like scrolling, moving windows etc have been dramatically slow. I tried to boot from live cd with 10.04 and everything seemed ok.

I am using Ubuntu 9.10 x64 on an HP Pavillion, p6110y PC. Whenever I playback audio, and have not played audio for several seconds, I hear a clicking noise before the audio starts to play. I did not have this problem with Ubuntu 9.04 x64 on the same computer, and I think that PulseAudio is to blame, as usual. Does anyone have any advice as to how to stop this clicking noise? I found something that might be relevant to this issue: http://www.flibblesan.co.uk/2009/10/...-playback-bug/.

I am running some Matlab simulations on Natty Narwhal. Each time this matlab script outputs a figure, Matlab jumps to the foreground, as if I clicked it on the launcher. This is really annoying, because if I'm typing something in my browser for example, and a figure is displayed, I am taken away from my browser and I have to click the browser to resume typing. Is there a way to just have Matlab run in the background without interfering my other work?

I use TinyChat a lot, and for whatever reason, the space-bar will scroll down the page and then I have to scroll up every time when I'm inside flash trying to type. Is there any way to completely disable the space scrolling so that I wont have to worry about it. I never used it to begin with, so it doesn't matter to me.

I have an install of Mint 9, and the fan runs a lot less then it did in Vista, but it still is way to loud because it's not very warm at all. I was wondering if there is a tool for Ubuntu/Mint that you could adjust this issue. It would be nice if it was a gui tool, but anything will do, because it's really bugging me.

I moved from a Linux environment from one company to another and one annoying difference came out:When I used to run an application in a terminal (no GUI), the transcript lines were presented one the window - when the window was full then the scrolling of the lines would continue only if one hit the space bar to proceed (of course waiting to user input did not stop the run).
In the new environment the behavior is different - transcript lines keep going on and on so I need to scroll up - and moreover each page-up command is cancelled by the new lines appearing.perhaps this is also reproduce with other Linux commands , say "find" or "ls".

So I just recently switched to Ubuntu because my computer's hard drive with windows died. When I bought a new hard drive, it was just easier to use Ubuntu. Anyway, I really like the operating system so far, and have had no problems except for one: When I close the screen on my laptop, the screen won't come back on when I open it. The buttons on my keyboard light up and everything like they should, but the screen stays black. I have tried doing Ctrl + Alt + F keys with no luck. I am very new to Ubuntu so please go slowly. I am using Ubuntu 10.10 on an HP Pavilion Dv4 laptop.

I might have a different problems as I have a newer laptop, a HP dv6-2170us with intel i5 cpu. I had no wireless with the 2.6.31 kernel so I upgraded to the 2.6.34 and had to manually compile my wireless driver. Everything works great now except the sound issue. I thought it use to work out the box with the old kernel, but then again I might be wrong. I knwo it works in the "other os" dual booting and all. Its a not a huge issue, but hopeing I could resolve it. Here is some of the info from reading some of the other posts. the model=dell-vostro I just tried to see if that works, which is doesnt, so thats why thats in my sound.conf file.
[Code].....
Have I missed anything? I have tried the fix here: Audio coming from both headphone and laptop speakers - Page 3 - openSUSE Forums page 3 about adding a repo and upgrading, but that upgrade wants me to revert back to the older kernel in which case I dont have wireless support or acpi working proporly, so thats not a doable thing for me.

Im totally newbie is *nix OS (including debian) but more than pro in Win, so treat me with understanding,
TECH SPEC:
Debian 6
Gnome 2.30.2
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Mouse still working well during random period of time (it may be less then one minute and more then few hour's from boot up) then instantly stop moving (cursor are freeze) but it still active. Obviously it is not associated with any program, coz it happens even on log-on screen.
One thing make this case unusual - im using Logitech Wireless Desktop MK710 keyboard + mice set. It mean there is only one receiver for both devices. You guessed it, keyboard continues to operate normally after mouse fail! Absolutely normally! Even more, if i connect new wired usb mouse at this time, it will be work well, but not for log... after random period of time it goes freeze too =/ KEYBOARD STILL WORKING

I have a Ubuntu 10.10 server; I have created several users and wish them to have their own web space (with a unique domain name for each). I have therefore created www folders within their home folder and created new Virtual Servers to host each domain name and point to the users www folder in their home folder. They can then use an FTP client to upload files. This all works well.
However, I would like to stop a user from going back up a level and traversing the tree. They can currently go back up to /home and see other users names.

I used fedora 11 with no problem. Then I did a fresh install of fedora 12. The laptop started making some strange noise something like water dripping or like that. I noticed this long back but I couldn't describe the problem so I waited if I can find something on my own. Even now I'm not sure if anyone can understand whats going on. Just trying my luck. To make sure it was not my laptop( hardware ) problem I went back to fed 11, no strange sounds there. Same thing happened when I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 from Ubuntu 9.04. I'm no expert in operating systems. I do not know what is common in Ubuntu 9.10 and fedora 12 , but they are giving the same problem.

I run my desktop the old fashioned way, lots of icons on it, I think its what you would call under KDE: Folder view. (right click desktop, settings, appearance, type: Folder view)
1- first thing I noticed was that you now have the + and - signs when you hover or select icons, I understand what they mean to do but to be honest I can do that perfectly well using ctrl + mouse click, so is there a way to not show the + and - sign.
2- with 11.2 and KDE 4.3.5 if I held my mouse over a folder on my desktop I would see its content in a panel. If I for exampled placed an image on the desktop the icon would be a small version of the image. In KDE 4.5 I no longer have these effect. In Desktop settings - Plasma Workspace under Display the Previews is checked and under More Preview Options I selected the whole lot. But nope it not longer will do a preview, am I missing something here ?
3- sometimes, but hard to reproduce, when closing for example Dolphin, it wont close right away, mouse will stop moving for about 1-1.5sec and then Dolphin will close. Not sure where to look for that. I won't mind entering a bug report at KDE but rather not do it if I simply missing something in the configurations.

I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed at work on my Dell Optiplex 755, which runs perfect. So I decided to install Ubuntu on my home desktop, which so far has been a mistake. Booting up takes almost 5 minutes, after I login it takes about 2 minutes to get to my desktop, typing in any application (even a shell) is horribly lagged, almost to the point where the PC is unusable. I also get extreme lag when executing programs, or just simply clicking a submit button. It will take 2-10 seconds to actually click or execute. The weird part is visual effects extra works perfect and smooth.
CPU: i7 920
Ram 6Gb's
HD1: Veloci Raptor 300Gb 10k RPM
HD2: WD 1.5Tb (Storage)
Video: MSI N250GTS 1Gb
SmartD shows my Raptor healthy, here are the read test speeds.
Min Read Rate 7.6Mb/s
Max Read Rate 128.2 Mb/s
Avg Read Rate: 105.5 Mb/s
Avg Access Time: 8.6ms
Note: The graph has quite a few drop downs (as you can see the minimum is very low). I've also ran badblocks on the drive which came back with 0 errors. Do I need a special driver for my hard drive? I'm attempting to watch a movie on [URL] and it works fine as long as I continually move my mouse, when I stop moving the mouse the video gets jumpy.

I've installed years back Debian on my laptop. Last year i did upgrade, i putted an ssd in my old laptop which works great with debian.
Now I bought a new laptop, to replace my old one. Because my new laptop doesn't have an SSD installed, i want to replace the harddrive by the SSD from my old laptop.
Now so said, so done. I replaced the hard drive easy by the ssd. Now if i boot the new laptop with the ssd installed i'm getting message from EUFI/BIOS that there is no OS installed on the ssd???
Debian is installed on it! If a place back the ssd in my old laptop, it's booting like it should, so it's working. Why is EUFI/BIOS think there is no OS installed? Debian is installed on the ssd so it should work i think?
