Ubuntu :: Stop Programs From Coming To Foreground
May 27, 2011
I am running some Matlab simulations on Natty Narwhal. Each time this matlab script outputs a figure, Matlab jumps to the foreground, as if I clicked it on the launcher. This is really annoying, because if I'm typing something in my browser for example, and a figure is displayed, I am taken away from my browser and I have to click the browser to resume typing. Is there a way to just have Matlab run in the background without interfering my other work?

Recent example: mountlo (using UML):
vi@vi-notebook:~/b$ mountlo -m 16 -d /dev/uba1 /home/vi/mnt/usb -t vfat -o iocharset=utf8,allow_other&
[1] 32561
vi@vi-notebook:~/b$ Checking that ptrace can change system call numbers...OK
Checking syscall emulation patch for ptrace...OK
Checking advanced syscall emulation patch for ptrace...OK
Checking PROT_EXEC mmap in /tmp...OK
[Code]...
Also happens with Gimp (when it does run it's plug-ins). Parts of Gimp started by `gimp q.jpg&' freeze and cannot continue unless "killall -CONT" or made foreground. Is it a bug? How to reliably start things in a background?

I found that indicator-weather was taking up a huge amount of memory recently so I removed it via:
I then started to get periodic indicator messages saying 'Network error in weather", so I reinstalled the indicator applet and the messages continue!

I'm having a very faint but noticeable electric-like buzzing/grinding. It is not the hard drive but sounds very similar.
It occurs when i move scroll bars, or drag windows. It is highly replicable.
The only other time this has happens is when i install KDE which resulted in me reinstalling. Something id prefer to avoid. I haven't installed KDE this time, but this seems to have started immediately after replacing my fstab file which i accidentally deleted. That's the only thing i can think of.

programs (especially Firefox, though I haven't used other programs much) stop responding rather frequently without warning and after some time they just start responding again. Apt-get also takes ages to unpack stuff when I'm upgrading/installing something, that might be related. According to top there is barely any cpu usage at all during these freezes. I had this issue on a stock Lucid install. When Maverick came out, I tried that one, and the issue still existed. On a fully upgraded Maverick system, it's still there as well. Windows works without a hitch, as does Ubuntu running under a VM on windows.
System specs:
CPU: Phenom 2 x4 945 @ 3 GHz
GPU: Radeon HD 5770 with fglrx
4 GB of ddr3 ram
Motherboard: Asus M4A89GTD PRO
Hard drives: 2 WD 1.5 TB drives running on a fakeraid 1 array

I would really like to stop Konqueror opening up links from Skype and other programs. It's becoming annoying because I have Chrome set to be the default browser, but for some reason when I click on a link it opens in Konqueror.

When I turn on my computer I am greeted by an unending stream of "Starting File Managers" appearing in the programs list. This cannot be stopped, though none of the file managers actually open. They just sit there filling up my programs bar and wasting my cpu slowing down computer. It also means I cant upon my own folders, or see what programs I have open.If I run terminal, type xkill and click on one of the buttons in the programs list, that kills them all, and I can see my programs again for a bit, until it fills up again. The panel disappears and appears again, with all the spawning messages gone and any other programs I have open remain there. Its just the randomly spawned "Starting File Managers" that don't come back.
My CPU fluctuates. Its around 60% to 90% load, when it should be idle, but is instead opening all these windows. When I view the processes the most CPU intensive (when I sort) is Gnome System Monitor at 6% and then Gnome panel at 5%,gconfd-2 is as around 2%, compiz.real, dbus-deamon hover around 1%. And everything else is generally at 0%.So somewhere, a hidden process is using about 70% of my CPU load. Which isn't shown in system-monitor. Maybe because its an admin process and I can only see simple user processes. I dunno. There is something else though. I have a process with no name appearing, its blank. And it keeps disappearing and re-appearing. So you can hardly select it hard enough to kill it. I managed to kill it once and it said error, process (large number, 10,000 or 100,000) does not exist. So can't be killed. When I do an xkill the console writes:
Code:
anthony@Anthony-Acer:~$ xkill
Select the window whose client you wish to kill with button 1....

Sometimes when I have two or more windows open, the window in the foreground will be white, or blank. This most notably happens when I have Firefox and LibreOffice open in the same desktop. The window in the background is clearly visible, and when I right click on the window in the foreground, a normal context menu comes up. This also sometimes happens when there is only one window on a desktop.
I have played on and off with ubuntu over the years, and am currently using 11.04 on an older HP with an Athlon 64 chip. You may consider my background knowledge of the system to be one step above nil. I'm happy to provide any system info you may want, but you'll likely have to tell me how to obtain it.

Is it possible to schedule a process in the foreground? Lets say a cron schedule to be ran at 9:00. I would like to come back at 9:30, see how the process is running, and being able to interact with it... lets say kill it, or whatever. Is it possible? (Its not necessary to use cron, but it must be in Command Line)

Whenever I'm playing a video and bring another application to the foreground, the video window appears over the foreground application:
I'm running Natty Narwhal 64-bit. This didn't happen back in Maverick. The hardware is an Asus K42JR laptop. If there's any more detailed information that I can provide to help narrow this problem down, please let me know.
I've found a similar issue on the forums, but it seems a bit different. This guy also has foreground window problems, but in his case they occur with non-video applications and are not consistent (it only happens 10% of the time).
With me, it always occurs with only video playback. The choice of video application for playback does not appear to matter (I've tried Totem, VLC). Strangely, the problem doesn't occur when viewing flash videos from within Chrome.

I start a process, put it in the background running, then log out, then log in again, and want to bring the process to front again. I've looked in "ps aux" for the PID, but it won't be put in the foreground with "fg ###". What's the correct way? (I use the same account for both login sessions.)

is it possible in bash to run one command in background and after it's done show output with less? While background process is running I should be able enter another commands. What I have is this (sleep is only for simulation):
Code:
{({ ( tree / > tree.txt && sleep 2) & } && wait && less tree.txt) &} && wait fg &
Problem is that I don't know and I can't find how to move it to the foreground after completion.

I got curious during the construction of my program to search for blocks of text that contain certain words, and wanted to print out blocks of text with the words I was searching for, initially, in ALL CAPS and seperated by tabs for easy identification. That got boring, though, so I thought, "Can printf do colors, too?" Yes it can.... Who knew?

I know a program running in the background can be brought to the foreground by typing 'fg'. So, if
command_line &
really runs the program in the background, my question has just been answered. But then all reduces to this question (yeah, I know; but I'm asking in earnest): does the ampersand sign make the program run in the background?

I've read about this. Everyone says to use ~/.Xresources or ~/.Xdefaults, and it doesn't work for me. It doesn't do anything at all, in fact. I'm trying to use this:
Code:
XTerm*background: black
XTerm*foreground: white
In the ~/.X* files, it won't work. I read that another way of doing it is using
Code:
xrdb -merge .x_settings_file
This will work for me. It's the only thing I can get to work. But when I restart, it will have to be done again. I'm using Slackware 12.2.

If you don't know, users are able to quickly resize windows using the "ALT+MiddleClick" key shortcut/combo. Basically, hold the ALT key, and mouse middle click and hold on a window. Move the mouse around, and it will resize the window for you.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1) Open a single Window.
2) Near the bottom-right-hand corner of the window, ALT+MiddleClick and drag. It should resize. Great. It works.
What Doesn't Work:
Now, the problem arises when you have multiple windows open on the desktop, they are "layered". i.e. you might have several windows open "behind" the one currently "up front". Example:
If I try to ALT+MiddleClick the "foreground window", it rarely actually resizes THAT window, and instead jumps one of the windows from behind to the front, and resizes that one instead!
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1) Open 3x gnome-terminal windows and say some nautilus window. Place them overtop one another. (like the above image)
2) Try to ALT+MiddleClick the foreground window.
3) Repeat this always trying to grab the foreground window.
For me, the window manager seems to bring some window from the background to the front! Desktop Recording of the Problem: [URL]
Running:
* Ubuntu 10.10
* compiz window manager (the problem does not occur with metacity)
* ATI Radeon RV770 (HD4870) w/ open source Radeon Driver (same problem w/ fglrx driver)
* Versions: [URL]

After upgrading to 11.04, I noticed something strange, being that when I want to drag a file or folder from one Nautilus folder window to another which is not visible, I can no longer hold the item over said folder's taskbar button and wait for it to appear. It just shows the + for copy, and when I let go (which I have no choice but to eventually do), it creates a launcher to that item (I assume it's doing that, and not actually copying there, but the + has me unsure).
I've looked in Nautilus's preferences to see if this is some new behaviour that I can revert back to, but could find nothing there.
I'm of course using the Classic desktop with bottom panel being the taskbar. If you know how I can rectify this, please let me know, as the times I would want to create a file or folder launcher without the usual hassle would be rare, but I am constantly dragging stuff from one folder to another, and it would be a real pain to have to line up source and destination folders each time.
