Debian Multimedia :: K3b Makes Strange Cracking Noise
Jul 1, 2011
I have just installed squeeze 6.0.2 amd64 and noticed when I use k3b to burn/verify a disc, when it has finished burning the media it plays a sound, and rather sound is played which sounds very crackly/muffled.I do not remember this on ubuntu, and I cannot say for sure but I dont recall this happening on squeeze 6.0.1.
Sound plays perfectly in all other applications, no problems whatsoever. This is not a big deal, I just dont remember this happening. I know this isnt the most detailed posting but does anyone have any idea what this could be? I even tried to reinstall k3b through synaptics and the problem still persists.

I just installed Linux Multimedia Studio but I can not get any proper sound from my speakers. The only sound I hear is a weird noise. What is the minimum performance to run this application. I have a Compaq Presario pentium 3 with 512mb ram.

My computer fan sounds very much on certain Linux distro's.
On some it nearly doesn't sound at all.
The ones I've tried which sounds alot:
Arch with KDE and Xfce
Chrunchbang with Openbox
Fedora 15
The ones who the computer fan nearly doesn't sound at all:
Ubuntu 11.04
Mint 11
Xubuntu 11.04
Does anybody have an idea why my fan is very quiet on the Ubuntu distros.
I acually would like to use Arch but I really hate when the fan makes alot of noise.
And I don't really understand why Chrungbang sound alot neither. It uses Openbox which is very light on resources and also Chrunchbang is based on Debian which Ubuntu is as well.

I love Ubuntu, but it makes a loud sort of death rattle when it starts up, disturbing other people. Also when I exit Firefox, if there is more than one page tab, it makes a loud clicking noise. How can I stop these things?

I'm having a very faint but noticeable electric-like buzzing/grinding. It is not the hard drive but sounds very similar.
It occurs when i move scroll bars, or drag windows. It is highly replicable.
The only other time this has happens is when i install KDE which resulted in me reinstalling. Something id prefer to avoid. I haven't installed KDE this time, but this seems to have started immediately after replacing my fstab file which i accidentally deleted. That's the only thing i can think of.

I used fedora 11 with no problem. Then I did a fresh install of fedora 12. The laptop started making some strange noise something like water dripping or like that. I noticed this long back but I couldn't describe the problem so I waited if I can find something on my own. Even now I'm not sure if anyone can understand whats going on. Just trying my luck. To make sure it was not my laptop( hardware ) problem I went back to fed 11, no strange sounds there. Same thing happened when I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 from Ubuntu 9.04. I'm no expert in operating systems. I do not know what is common in Ubuntu 9.10 and fedora 12 , but they are giving the same problem.

I have a doubt about the Gnome default Image Viewer. It's because I edit my RAW images on RawTherapee, and then export them to jpg. When I open the exported pictures on the image viewer, it looks like has lots of noise. But when I open the same picture on Gimp or Iceweasel, the noises doen't appear.
So, the question is: which image viewer is wrong? Is Gimp and Iceweasel "fixing" the picture automatically, or Gnome Image Viewer is reading it wrongly and showing it with noise?URL...

Whenever I play a flash object that has sound, there is this repetitive beeping noise audible over the audio track. I've tried this on different videos and different sites, always with the same result. Whenever I play a multimedia file in Iceweasel, for example [URL]... plodes.ogv , the sound is normal, as is the sound for any multimedia file that I play in MPlayer. So, I am convinced it is a flash issue. What I don't get is why this just started happening for no apparent reason.

I just updated Nvidia driver with sgfxi to 352.30 (Debian testing), and X doesn't load.
My current display manager is sddm, used with KDE Plasma 5. Is it a known issue? I couldn't find any sensible error messages in Xorg logs.

I recently installed Firefox 3.6 on Debian Squeeze. Everything went smoothly, but Firefox looks weird. The interface reminds me of Windows 98 and anytime I scroll through the menus the highlighter is grey and it makes things awfully hard to read. I'm not sure what could be wrong but I'm hoping someone here I'm not sure how to insert small images as url links so I'll just post links to screenshots I took for reference.[URL]Oh, and one other problem I recently discovered, flash doesn't seem to work. It works just fine in Iceweasel but I am told I have to install it in Firefox. I installed libflashplayer.so in /usr/lib/firefox/plugins but that doesn't seem to have helped. Come to think of it, it probably wouldn't since it's probably the 32-bit version I got from their site, I run on 64 bit.

Ubuntu 10.10 x64 worked out of the box for me but there is one irritating issue.
I have Xonar DS(Oxygen HD Audio) with analogue 2.1 speakers and spdif passthrough to nvidia GTX260 hdmi output for my tv.
It makes random cracking noise on tv unless something is played, no matter on analogue or digital output, then is noiseless.

Since about a few weeks, I have a problem with the sound on my Ubuntu Jaunty 64-bit. From any application it would simply provide noise instead of the real sound. The motherboard is working fine and providing sound under Vista. Initially, I then managed to change the settings in System-> Sound from Auto to one of the options, which provided for a decent test result. Now this is not working anymore either ... so I only get noise out of my speakers.

I'm running the latest version of Ubuntu and have been for a while now without issue. However today (actually now yesterday) i made the giant mistake of upgrading my on board HD3150 graphics to a PCIe HD5570 since then my whole life has fallen to bits.
First i noticed some visual noise on the screen. Concluding this was due to incorrect or out of date drivers i attempted to update them from the Hardware Drivers section. This gave the error:
SystemError: installArchives() failed
Activating from the command line using jockey gave the same error.
Deciding a reboot might be needed i did so. On power up all ubuntu and recovery modes produced an unskinned GUI with no desktop icons that responded to no mouse or keyboard input.
I was forced to reinstall the operating system.
On reinstalling and losing everything i had installed previously (it's going to take many days to get that all back and working again!), i still have the screen noise, have still been getting the same errors on attempting to activate the drivers, except now i also get this:
the installation of this driver failed.
Please have a look at the log file for details.: /var/log/jockey.log

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 in a Samsung R510. I've tried to record sound with an external microphone and there have always been a permanent noise accompanying it.I thought it could be the internal microphone, that's causing the noise, but even when I disabled it the noise remains. Or maybe I didn't disable it the right way !

I'm getting this weird noise and (sometimes) delayed audio on HDMI out on VLC. I've tried banshee, miro, ..... on FF and all of them work just right. I would settle changing VLC's sound output to ALSA, but it's also buggy as I get no audio after pausing. Restarting or reloading Pulseaudio and ALSA didn't work either.
Does anybody have a recommendation? Obviously, I'd like to stick with VLC.

My microphone was working properly until four days ago. I'm not sure if this appeared after a system update, I'm using LL 10.04. This is my onboard HDA Intel chip, from 'lspci':
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801JD/DO (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)
I can record sounds from the microphone, but white noise is accompanied. The weird thing is that when I unplug the microphone, I can still hear the white noise. I've tried modifying the settings in gnome-volume-control and in alsamixer without luck. The white noise is persistent. I've read this can be related to pulse audio but no one seems to know how to reset it to its default configuration.

recently i installed ubuntu (gnome) 10.10. i'm lovin it but only thing is bugging me is this annoying noise whenever i try to see a video on web or using vlc. i m using dell inspiron 6400. IT has VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility X1400 My glxinfo outcome is :
HTML Code:
name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: SGI
[code]...
now my main problem is whenever i change my visual settings from none to extra , i start getting noise on my usb headphone or even on my speakers especially if i play a video on full screen mode it become worse .. it starts constantly makeing buzzing noise. sometimes even when i minimize or maximize or scroll up down a window...
if i put the visual effects in normal mode i still get the noise on video playing full-screen mood but this is time bit low and on none mode i get the noise too but very low... so i m assuming there must be some problem with my vga card which is causing this chaos. unfortunately there is no driver for my graphics card dat ati supports on ubuntu, so i used gallium 3d project using this ppa https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/radeon .. graphics works fine now but this nosie is killing me ..

This is a weird and persistent bug that I've been having. It's persisted across multiple distros (Arch and Debian) and is currently making my computer only usable without sound. I'm beginning to think it's the hardware.
Anyway, the hardware is a Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro laptop. I'm currently running Debian 8. The crackling noise begins shortly after I log in - it happens regardless of whether the audio is muted, or whether anything is currently playing. It's a very, very loud noise - on the level of a vacuum cleaner or similar (maybe, these things are hard to estimate). It sounds sort of like a fast series of crackling pops. If I put the machine to sleep with the power button the crackling will go away for a little bit after I resume - I haven't timed it or anything but I imagine that it takes 30 seconds to start up again (after the computer has woken from sleep).
I can completely eliminate the problem by doing the following:
Code: Select allblacklist snd_hda_codec_hdmi
blacklist snd_hda_intel
blacklist soundcore
blacklist snd_hda_codec_realtek
blacklist snd_hda_codec_generic
[Code] ....
But obviously, this makes the sound on the laptop not work at all. I've been listening to music with my phone, which is an ok workaround, but I'm a programmer and I'd like to be able to watch talks on youtube and so on.
lspci:
Code: Select all00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT DRAM Controller (rev 0b)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0b)
00:03.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT HD Audio Controller (rev 0b)
00:04.0 Signal processing controller: Intel Corporation Device 0a03 (rev 0b)
00:14.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 8 Series USB xHCI HC (rev 04)
[Code] ....
It started happening on Arch after a pretty standard install (i3wm with Xorg, browser, terminal emulator, etc) and I suspected that I had misconfigured something, so I installed Debian - I know other Debian users with this laptop who have not had this issue, and so I figured the default settings would treat me better. No such luck - it started happening again on the clean Debian install. One detail - both installs (the Arch install and the Debian one) use full disk encryption (lvm on LUKS) but I can't think of how that would affect it.
My only thought is that it's some weird power saving mode issue - the soundcard isn't used for a bit, so it cycles to a lower power state, and the bad thing happens.

I've got excited when I saw the possibilty to use my Owncloud account (my server is installed on a Digital Ocean cloud machine) directly on the system configuration.
Well, I added the acount there and my owncloud webdav folder appeared on Nautilus everytime I turn my PC on, what's great. So I've started to save my Libreoffice docs on the cloud, believing that I finally got free from google docs.

Since upgrading to Lucid a few days ago I'm having intermittent problems (90% of the time)with opening OpenOffice files. When I open up a spreadsheet (.ods) in OO, (whether OO was already open or not) my screens go black, then flash on and off for 30 seconds (ish) as if trying to change the refresh rate.Sometimes this results in Gnome crashing and restarting itself. it settles down and is OK. On a few occasions I have had to change terminal and manually restart gdm.
Here's my environment;
Dell Latitude D620
nVidia GeForce Go 7300 (according to hwinfo)
Ubuntu Lucid 32-bit (upgraded from Jaunty)
2 GB RAM
I've got the recommended "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current)" hardware driver and the NVIDIA X Server Settings applet, which says my NVIDIA driver version is 195.36.24. I'm running dual screens (1440x900 and 1280x1024) using TwinView. After a flicker, here is what I find in the Xorg.0.log;
