Ubuntu :: Massive Lag - Stop Moving The Mouse The Video Gets Jumpy

Nov 16, 2010

I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed at work on my Dell Optiplex 755, which runs perfect. So I decided to install Ubuntu on my home desktop, which so far has been a mistake. Booting up takes almost 5 minutes, after I login it takes about 2 minutes to get to my desktop, typing in any application (even a shell) is horribly lagged, almost to the point where the PC is unusable. I also get extreme lag when executing programs, or just simply clicking a submit button. It will take 2-10 seconds to actually click or execute. The weird part is visual effects extra works perfect and smooth.

CPU: i7 920
Ram 6Gb's
HD1: Veloci Raptor 300Gb 10k RPM
HD2: WD 1.5Tb (Storage)
Video: MSI N250GTS 1Gb

SmartD shows my Raptor healthy, here are the read test speeds.

Min Read Rate 7.6Mb/s
Max Read Rate 128.2 Mb/s
Avg Read Rate: 105.5 Mb/s
Avg Access Time: 8.6ms

Note: The graph has quite a few drop downs (as you can see the minimum is very low). I've also ran badblocks on the drive which came back with 0 errors. Do I need a special driver for my hard drive? I'm attempting to watch a movie on [URL] and it works fine as long as I continually move my mouse, when I stop moving the mouse the video gets jumpy.

Debian Hardware :: Mouse: Stop Moving - Not Associated With Any Program

Jul 25, 2011

Im totally newbie is *nix OS (including debian) but more than pro in Win, so treat me with understanding,

TECH SPEC:
Debian 6
Gnome 2.30.2

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Mouse still working well during random period of time (it may be less then one minute and more then few hour's from boot up) then instantly stop moving (cursor are freeze) but it still active. Obviously it is not associated with any program, coz it happens even on log-on screen.

One thing make this case unusual - im using Logitech Wireless Desktop MK710 keyboard + mice set. It mean there is only one receiver for both devices. You guessed it, keyboard continues to operate normally after mouse fail! Absolutely normally! Even more, if i connect new wired usb mouse at this time, it will be work well, but not for log... after random period of time it goes freeze too =/ KEYBOARD STILL WORKING

OpenSUSE :: KDE 4.5 - Mouse Will Stop Moving For About 1-1.5sec And Then Dolphin Will Close

Sep 13, 2010

I run my desktop the old fashioned way, lots of icons on it, I think its what you would call under KDE: Folder view. (right click desktop, settings, appearance, type: Folder view)

1- first thing I noticed was that you now have the + and - signs when you hover or select icons, I understand what they mean to do but to be honest I can do that perfectly well using ctrl + mouse click, so is there a way to not show the + and - sign.

2- with 11.2 and KDE 4.3.5 if I held my mouse over a folder on my desktop I would see its content in a panel. If I for exampled placed an image on the desktop the icon would be a small version of the image. In KDE 4.5 I no longer have these effect. In Desktop settings - Plasma Workspace under Display the Previews is checked and under More Preview Options I selected the whole lot. But nope it not longer will do a preview, am I missing something here ?

3- sometimes, but hard to reproduce, when closing for example Dolphin, it wont close right away, mouse will stop moving for about 1-1.5sec and then Dolphin will close. Not sure where to look for that. I won't mind entering a bug report at KDE but rather not do it if I simply missing something in the configurations.

Ubuntu :: Random Stuttering Video/audio When Mouse NOT Moving?

Oct 2, 2010

Since updating to 10.10, randomly sometimes the CPU usage will just up (although it's generally only 1 of the cores), it seems that it might be the Xorg process using it.

Audio and Video will start to stutter and the screen will stop updating so things like the terminal will appear frozen unless the mouse is moved.

When moving the mouse the screen keeps updating and the cpu usage lowers (although video still skips).

After a few minutes the problem just seems to go away until it happens again later.

Ubuntu :: Mouse - Very Jumpy/not Smooth ?

May 20, 2010

I installed 10.04 LTS yesterday on a desktop. I have a problem with the mouse, it's very jumpy/not smooth. I can move it across the screen and it will jump up and down and left to right. Jittery I guess you would say. I've googled this and seen several people with the issue but no one has a rock solid solution. Does anyone here have any suggestions? I know it isn't the mouse, I've tried a different one, and it reacts the same on any surface.

Software :: Cinelerra-CV 4.1 Video Playback Is Jumpy - How To Adjust

Jul 20, 2010

New installation of Suse 11.3, with a new build of the git repository Cinelerra-CV 4.1 from the [URL] web site instructions.Loaded a 5 second mpg file into Cinelerra, and then tried to play it back in both the viewer and the main window. It does decode the video and play it back, however, the playback speed is not smooth. It jumps, in what look like 1 second intervals, and then it gets really slow towards the end of the playback. By jumps, I mean that it is like the speed of playback is on a curve with bumps on each second. Since this is a new installtion of Cinelerra, it could be some settings that are off, as it has been some time since using Cinelerra. For comparison, the same mpg file plays back fine in Kdenlive, although Kdenlive uses a much smaller playback screen...but it is nice and smooth in terms of playback speed. It also plays fine in Banshee.I did take a look at the Cinelerra html manual, and there was a section on system adjustments that you can make...although I would like to find out what is causing it, and if it is a feature of the Cinelerra build?

Software :: RecordMyDesktop Output Video Shows *massive* Artifacts Else Plays Too Fast?

Oct 21, 2010

I recently tried out recordMyDesktop (not the GTK+ frontend, just the CLI program, I wanted to Keep It Simple this time ), and found that the videos it records/encodes show massive motion-smearing artifacts when played back. This is without the "--on-the-fly-encoding" option; with it, the video looks fine (i.e. has no artifacts other than the typical ones found in any compressed video), but it plays back too quickly (the time-step between frames is too high, thus making everything go too fast when the video is played back, even though the frame rate is low). Here's a screenshot of the video playing, showing what the artifacts look like (they're nasty!).

I've searched Google and LQ about this problem to no avail: either there were no relevant results, or it was just a post on a different forum asking basically the same question, but with no answer. So apparently this problem is either really rare, or it's something specific to my configuration, and mine alone (highly unlikely).

System specs:
CPU: Intel Core i5 430M @ 2.27 GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 310M w/ 512 MiB VRAM
RAM: 4 GiB

Command used to record:

Code:

recordmydesktop --fps 30 --no-sound --no-frame --overwrite -o /home/mrcode/Videos/capture.ogv

I've tried different options, such as --quick-subsampling, as well as tweaking the video quality and bitrate settings (--v_quality and --v_bitrate), all of which did nothing to change/get rid of the artifacts.

I have a Ubuntu 10.10 server; I have created several users and wish them to have their own web space (with a unique domain name for each). I have therefore created www folders within their home folder and created new Virtual Servers to host each domain name and point to the users www folder in their home folder. They can then use an FTP client to upload files. This all works well.

However, I would like to stop a user from going back up a level and traversing the tree. They can currently go back up to /home and see other users names.

Ubuntu :: Mouse Stops Working After A Few Seconds Of Moving?

Sep 11, 2010

I boot up Ubuntu 10.04 just fine. The mouse works, but after about 2 seconds or so, it stops moving. Of course, the keyboard keeps working fine. It's like Ubuntu stops getting the signals that the mouse is moving. The mouse is in fine working condition. It works fine on my Windows partition. The mouse just had fresh batteries installed, and the laser light doesn't turn off.

I did just remove an ATI card and go back to my GeForce 8200 onboard graphics card. So I thought it might be a wierd driver problem, so I managed to remove the NVIDIA drivers. Didn't help at all. I also was able to log into a console and update the OS. No help there either. I did try to boot my 10.04 live cd, but my computer hates live cd's for some reason. It wouldn't boot, and I can't remember what I did to make it work when I installed Ubuntu.

I haven't installed KDE this time, but this seems to have started immediately after replacing my fstab file which i accidentally deleted. That's the only thing i can think of.

Ubuntu :: Moving Mouse During Blank Screen Does Not Return To Gnome Desktop

May 21, 2011

An ubuntu-11.04 laptop is set to turn on the screensaver after 5 minutes of inactivity, and power management is set to blank the display after 15 minutes of inactivity. When the screen goes blank, you're supposed to be able to move the mouse to return to your Gnome desktop. This works sometimes, sometimes not. When it doesn't, moving the mouse doesn't eliminate the black screen, although I can see the mouse cursor. ctrl+alt+del does nothing, neither do alt+tab, alt+esc or ctrl+alt+esc. ctrl+alt+f1-12 work as they usually do, so I can "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart" from one of the TTYs, or via ssh.

I tested just now with setting the screensaver and power management display blanking to 1 minutes. After a minute the screen went blank (backlight on), and then after a second or two black (backlight off), and moving the mouse returned to Gnome as it should. So I don't know why sometimes it doesn't. Two questions:

1- Which program can I run, or which service can I restart, to return to Gnome without having to kill gdm and lose all open windows?

2- What's causing this?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Dual-monitor Mouse Position Jumps When Moving Off-screen

Nov 4, 2010

I have a dual-screen set-up with Ubuntu 10.10. I have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 video card. I use my lower-resolution laptop screen on the left and a larger monitor on the right. The monitor is also physically higher than the monitor. See attachment for a screenshot.I have correctly set up my displays so that if the mouse is in the middle of the screen it can move from one screen to the other without jumping. The jumping happens when moving off of one screen in an area where the other screen is not directly next to it (some people call this 'the void').

Example: (See the attachment for a visual example of this.) My mouse is in the external monitor (right monitor). As I move the mouse to the top-left of the monitor (position 1), I by mistake go a little too far and instead of hitting the Ubuntu applications menu, I ended up at the top-right of the laptop monitor (left monitor; position 2). I quickly realize my mistake and move the mouse back to the right monitor, but now the mouse is at the middle-left position (position 3).This same error occurs by moving the mouse on the laptop monitor (left monitor) passed the bottom-right position. This is a big problem when scrolling vertical scroll bars on the laptop monitor (left monitor).I am looking for a fix that if the mouse is at position 1 in the attachment and I move the mouse left, it stays at position 1 and does not go to position 2.

Debian :: Mouse Not Moving Smoothly In Vmware Guest - Lenny ?

Jan 2, 2011

I am running Vmware server 2.02 on a Windows-7 host. Also I have installed Debian Lenny as a guest on top of the vmware server.

I have installed Vmwaretools, the screen resolution is fine but the mouse pointer movement isn't smoothly. Side effect: When I move the pointer from the Windows-7 host into the debian desktop windows, the pointer stops at the border for a while and then jumps at ones to the middle of the window.

I have the same problem with squeeze-32-kde-4, lenny-kde-64, lenny-gnome-64. I do not have this problem with Suse linux 32-kde4. When I move the pointer over the windows border, the chape of the pointer changes ( windows > linux ) and the movement is fluently without any interuption.
