I have a 250 gig usb hard drive. I would like to install Mandriva and Open Suse 11.3 on it, is this possible and how do I get the systems loaded. I got Mandriva installed, but when I tried Open Suse it trashed my Mandriva, i.e. I couldn't boot into it.

I have a laptop with two partitions, one with Windows XP and one for storage (formatted in NTFS). I would like to install Ubuntu on the storage partition, but my problem is that I can't boot from CD (or anything else) because my BIOS is password protected. I obviously don't know the password. y question is: If I plug the laptop's hard drive into another computer, install Ubuntu as described above and then reconnect it to my laptop, will it work?

When you put both windows and ubuntu on a computer do you share the hard drive? Meaning would I be able to access all my music in windows and then restart my computer-run ubuntu, would I have access to all the files?
I have 2 IDE drives, Windows XP is on the Master drive & Fedora 12 is on a partition the other drive. I purposely installed the Linux boot loader on the same drive as Fedora because want to use NTLDR as the primary boot loader. According to a guide I found [URL], I should be able to copy the Linux boot sector to a file & put that copy on the Windows drive & then modify boot.ini, so I am prompted to with an OS choice a startup.
The problem is the command the guide gives to copy the Linux boot sector (dd if=/dev/hdb1 of=bootsect.lnx size=512 count=1) has outdated syntax and does not work. What syntax would make this command work in Fedora 12? Another guide I found ([URL]-vista-already) suggested using: Grub4Dos & modifying boot.ini. This method almost worked until grub gave an error that there was no kernel loaded. What would I type into the grub prompt to load the kernel? How would I automate the loading of the kernel, so I don't have to specify the kernel each time?
I finally have decided to give ubuntu a shot.Windows is becoming too familiar, and it's been forever since I have used command line since DOS.I really need some humility, and I think that Linux will teach me some.I am going to give it a whirl on a "spare" machine, dual booting with Windows 7 64 on two separate hard drives. I'm burning the ubuntu live cd x86 right now. I am going to unplug my windows drive and start the installation.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been messing around with the ubuntu family for some time now, and usually have no problem finding my answers. This one, however, is giving me some trouble. I have been using ubuntu on my laptop for some time now, and recently got a new 2TB hard drive for my desktop. I cloned the old hard drive to the new one, and decided to install ubuntu onto a third drive. The third drive was IDE, the new one is SATA. I disconnected the other hard drive, and so my current set up is a SATA drive with Windows 7, and an IDE drive with Ubuntu (11.04 of course)
Well, I am unable to dual boot between the two, unfortunately, and would like to figure out how. I would like to say the problem is with Windows, since that is the primary drive. No GRUB shows up upon booting when both drives are plugged in, and the Windows Bootloader does not show my installation of Ubuntu, instead it goes right to Windows.
I have two 3 hard drives, one with Linux Mint, one with Fedora, one with Windows. For some reason, I can only choose Mint or Windows in the menu at the start. Also, when I boot on mint, I see my hard drive with Windows:
320 GB Hard Drive: 320 GB Filesystem.
But for the hard drive with Fedora I only see:
1.0 TB Hard Drive: 524 MB Filesystem.
From Mint I can go in this filesystem and there is a folder name Grub, can I take the info there and paste it into Mint's grub ? If so, how ?
How to put ophcrack on linux because of my supposed intentions of plugging it in waiting 20 mins and cracking passwords wherever people do this I know having to waste my space triple booting the thing with Ophcrack XP/Vista and BackTrack. How does one go about dual booting a flash drive? I could not find much on the internet.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI did an installation of SUSE 11.2 on a new SCSI hard drive. Keeping the old hard drive separate. I remembered there was some info on the old hard drive I wanted. I added this to the system and mounted a partition. I then copied the data over. Then I umounted the partition rebooted the machine and removed the hard drive. However the machine will now not boot without this hard drive even though its not mounted. Not sure what the error message I am given means I think it could be trying to fchk it. Do I need to do something more like remove /dev/sdd?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have managed to get a system going where I have kubuntu installed on a partition of my external hard drive. When the ehd is plugged in, everything works well. I have the option to boot into vista (my main os) or kubuntu. However, I see no reason why it won't let me have some kind of fallback mechanism that would let me boot into vista if the ehd is not found, instead I end up with the grub rescue prompt.
If not then I'm going to have to look at other options, perhaps booting into vista by default unless I hold down escape or whatever other key my bios expects to override, because there will be times that my ehd won't be plugged in. This is the only little niggle, as apart from that everything is working great.
I installed a new hard drive to my system. I use a program called R-Drive image to copy all my os to my new drive. It done a pretty good job too, its an exact copy. I deleted the old one. But obviously now I cant boot. I had a look at the menu.lst file i dont know what to change it to. heres my drive setup,
C: - Windows Vista - Ubuntu
D: - Documents - Swap File
E: - Games
I have a Sony VAIO AR series, it contains two separate 120GB hard drives that were originally configured in a raid. They're called hd0, and hd1. I disabled the raid and partitioned hd1 in 3 ways, one medium sized partition for the operating system (ext4), one large partition for storage (ext4) and one small partition for Swap space. I then installed Ubuntu onto hd1 with help from UNetbootin. After installation went fine I loaded up Windows installer, created two NTFS partitions, one medium and one large, and installed Windows 7 of the medium sized partition. Now I can't figure out how to boot into the Ubuntu side on hd1. Needless to say, in Windows, hd1 is not visable at all. I can see my two NTFS partitions fine.
When booting up I go through two main screens. The first screen "Matrix Storage Manager Option ROM," lists the physical disks (0, and 1.) and gives me the option to enter configuration with [cntrl+i]. The second screen gives me a list of options to boot from, Yet they are all Windows options and many are redundant. The list includes "Enter Command Line," which when selected tells me "Boot failed! Press any key to enter command line." command line brings me to "grub>" I tried booting Ubuntu from this command line, but don't have much to work with here. If an old bios and mainboard is being used, such that it cannot handle the large size of HD, then is it useful to say use a live CD and from its initial menu (pressed a key), choose 'Boot From First Hard Disk'? Would this be similar in getting around a bios and disk size limitation I wonder - like - does the use of a live CD in this way avoid using the bios to point to the active partition??
The reason for asking is that a friend has a couple of quality old rack mounted server machines and wants to use Ubuntu having now fitted 80 GB empty drives. Live CD seems ok, and 11.04 install goes ok but on boot up grub comes back with an error.
I recall that early machines cannot see larger(?) HDs for booting purposes even though installs go ok in very large HDs. I wondered if a live CD to boot up temporarily - trouble shooting - would be worth trying for this reason, or am I way off?
I have a dual boot machine with WinXP/Linux Mint on it. I am looking to erase both of them and put up Ubuntu 11.04.
I have chosen to go with a live USB install for this. The live USB boots fine and everything seems usable. However, when I tried to install it would tell me that I do not have 4GB available for the install which seemed a bit weird since I have a 160GB Maxtor HDD.
After digging around a bit I realized that the system does not see my hard drive. Running fdisk -l would only show the USB drive that I am booting from and not the main HDD.
I tried to have a look in /dev to see if my HDD is there and not mounted. But aside from sda which is the USB I did not find an sdb or hd entry.
Has anyone encountered a similar problem while trying to install Ubuntu 11.04?
P.S.: The HDD works fine, I can see it in BIOS and in the other 2 OS-es that I have installed.
I seem to have a complex issue on my hands that i can't figure out. first, i wasn't able to get access to my LVM'd hard drives via SSH without half of the content being missing or locked out (read-only or unable to open at all). the problem then went up to being unable to boot up - all i got was a long slew of [100.1234] ata1.00: error messages (they eventually DO stop once they get to around 998.234234 or whatever, and then i can log in and it seems to be "stable").
Part way through this rebooting ordeal i realized / decided to make power-on-self-test stop and wait if it finds errors (via bios) - that showed me that my 750G SATA drive is "bad" and my two (older) 120G & 250G IDE drives are "ok". i then unplugged the SATA drive, rebooted, and didn't see those error messages. however, my LVM was still obviously not coming together (since LVM was made up of the 120G, 250G, and 750G drives)
So, now it seems:
a) I can't boot smoothly with all drives in place
b) I can't do anything with lvm if i remove the 750G sata
c) With all drives hooked up, i can wait 10mins for the errors to go away, but STILL can't do anything with lvm
d) I need to recover the lvm stuff so that i can nicely migrate ALL those files (1.1TB of it) onto a new 1.5TB drive and do away with lvm
This is all running ubuntu 7.10 server edition (32-bit version on a 64-bit computer). i DID post a question on the ubuntu forum as well but so far got no replies at all.

I have a mini ITX computer that runs a software that I have been trying to clone to another hard drive as back up. When I do clone it, it is the exact same copy down to every byte. When I try to boot from the cloned hard drive, it starts booting, then displays some text:
Then is says some of the files are not found including a encryption signer key not found.
I do no know the next step I need to take. Is this becasue it is running off a different hard drive? I do not understand a bzImage too well, but does it have anything to do with that file?
would putting ubuntu on an external hard drive and booting it from refit work? and would i was starting up my imac 11,2 my ipod was bootable for some reason?

I have a friend with the same problem who is trying to boot Win7 and Ubuntu off the same SATA drive and the same issue occurs on his (He doesn't have the second drive as an option as I do).
Does anyone know a way to get side by side installation to work on one (SATA) drive? Failing this is it possible to boot Ubuntu off and External hard drive and still be able to dual boot Windows & Ubuntu?
I currently have Windows 7 installed on my laptop and I would like to dual boot w/ Fedora on the same hdd.I have two NTSF partitions, I shrunk my D drive 50GB for ext4 & swap.I've tried both liveusb-created & unetbootin to create a bootable USB to install Fedora.Anaconda starts up and I get through most of the install configuration, I set up GRUB & the partitions. Once I proceed to the next screen I get missing ISO image 9660 error My laptop doesn't have a DVD drive. It seems like a lot of people are getting this error, but I have found no concrete solution though.
How do I put the image on the drive? Windows can't read ext4 and I haven't been able to find a program that can.I have a USB to SATA adapter that I could hook up a DVD-ROM drive too, but I don't know if fedora will pick up on it.
i installed Ubuntu 10.10 on our second hard drive, and i cant dual boot it. it is set as slave, so should i set it to master, or do i need to hit a key @ initial boot. ive gotten a list that shows vista on it, which is on C: , but not ubuntu, which is on F:.

I have Grub2 installed, which provides me the choice at boot to start either Ubuntu or XP. This currently works fine.
I want to clone this hhd and transfer to a new, larger hhd, and have several questions, since I don't want to make a mistake with something so crtical. 1) Which software is generally considered the safest, most reliable and easiest to use (dd, Gddrescue, Clonezilla, Paragon, Macrum Reflect, Easeus, Drive Image XML, or something else)?
2) Which software will be able to copy and include both operating systems in the partitions to be cloned?
3) Will that software change the booting process or options in the cloned copy in any way? I've read where using Easeus corrupts Grub2 and thus requires re-installing Grub2!
Are there any other concerns, considerations or factors I need to consider in cloning the hhd; e.g. prior formatting an external hhd, and with what file system? I've also read where FAT32 would be the choice, but don't really know for sure.
I have ubuntu 10.4 installed in xp. Ubuntu tells me I have 50 gigs HD space yet the folder tells me I only have 700 mgs and I am getting a warning of not enough space on the computer. My question is. Is this due to windows claiming the space and not allowing enough to be used by ubuntu? If I delete windows and make this computer all linux will that help?

I'm trying to create a dual-boot system, and have been following the instructions here. However my hard disk has bad sectors, and GParted won't let me resize the Windows partition. It tells me to use ntfsresize with --bad-sectors as an option, after having done some checks, all of which I've done. I've successfully shrunk the NTFS volume in this way -
when I boot into Windows, it says the hard drive is the size I set it at. However, the Ubuntu installer and Gparted still see the Windows partition taking up the entire hard drive. So, for the installation, do I have to set the size of the volumes manually, or is there a way to make Ubuntu see what ntfsresize has done?
I just got a new hard drive and need to transfer my dual boot window 7/Ubuntu 10.10 onto the new hard drive and be bootable. Is there an easy was to do this?
