General :: Booting - Lvm - Failing Hard Drive - Ubuntu Server

I seem to have a complex issue on my hands that i can't figure out. first, i wasn't able to get access to my LVM'd hard drives via SSH without half of the content being missing or locked out (read-only or unable to open at all). the problem then went up to being unable to boot up - all i got was a long slew of [100.1234] ata1.00: error messages (they eventually DO stop once they get to around 998.234234 or whatever, and then i can log in and it seems to be "stable").
Part way through this rebooting ordeal i realized / decided to make power-on-self-test stop and wait if it finds errors (via bios) - that showed me that my 750G SATA drive is "bad" and my two (older) 120G & 250G IDE drives are "ok". i then unplugged the SATA drive, rebooted, and didn't see those error messages. however, my LVM was still obviously not coming together (since LVM was made up of the 120G, 250G, and 750G drives)
So, now it seems:
a) I can't boot smoothly with all drives in place
b) I can't do anything with lvm if i remove the 750G sata
c) With all drives hooked up, i can wait 10mins for the errors to go away, but STILL can't do anything with lvm
d) I need to recover the lvm stuff so that i can nicely migrate ALL those files (1.1TB of it) onto a new 1.5TB drive and do away with lvm
This is all running ubuntu 7.10 server edition (32-bit version on a 64-bit computer). i DID post a question on the ubuntu forum as well but so far got no replies at all.

In my laptop I have a 200GB hard drive that is starting to make clicking and grinding noises and won't boot about every third try.

/dev/sdb is a usb flash drive that has pmagic (not sure of the version, but it's 2.6.32.9-pmagic kernel, so I think it's the latest version). I'm posting from pmagic right now because I don't want the failing disk to get any worse until I get this sorted. I also know there is a post here called something like 'learning the dd command' or 'mastering the dd command' or something to that effect, but I can't find it for the life of me (I have it bookmarked on the failing drive, of course). If someone could point me to that post,

I made an attempt to backup my system (karmic koala) using this routine. cd / then sudo tar cvpzf backup.tgz --exclude=/proc --exclude=/lost+found --exclude=/backup.tgz --exclude=/mnt --exclude=/sys /
The process of backup went on for a very long time, which is probably normal. On returning to the computer in the morning, it was in suspend mode and would not power on via the usual method,tapping power button. So then I used the reset button, and after booting up a message appears on the top right that reports "Install problem! The configuration defaults for GNOME Power Manager have not been installed correctly. Please contact your computer administrator."
Is there something wrong with the statement that was used for backing up the system? Also when I attempt to login it does not work now either, it eventually returns to the login user selection. So is there a possibility the backup finished and then there may be a chance the system can be restored from the backup file? I have tried booting up with a live cd and could use some advice on how to navigate with terminal to root of the system and see if the backup file exist even, have been unable to get to the root folder(where the backup would be) with the GUI method via live cd.

I have a mini ITX computer that runs a software that I have been trying to clone to another hard drive as back up. When I do clone it, it is the exact same copy down to every byte. When I try to boot from the cloned hard drive, it starts booting, then displays some text:
Then is says some of the files are not found including a encryption signer key not found.
I do no know the next step I need to take. Is this becasue it is running off a different hard drive? I do not understand a bzImage too well, but does it have anything to do with that file?

Using F12 with a LVM Volume, Single disk with OS on and boot partition. The OS HDD is getting i/o errors, but will still boot to the login screen. I've removed the HDD and connected it to a Fedora Live OS on my laptop, connected the HDD and it registers as :

And it tried to mount /dev/sdd2 to view and see if I can recover some files.

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdd2,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
Any way to mount the partition to allow me to try and get some data back, or if trying to do a full backup of the drive you can get it to ignore i/o errors.

I have a 3 weeks old PC which I've just finished getting set up with Ubuntu 11.04 and W7 in a Virtual Box. Now the drive has started making rumbling noises and doesn't always boot.The engineer from Dell is coming tomorrow to replace the drive, but what can I do about transferring the whole old drive to the new one in full working order, quickly?
I've been using rsync to keep backups of my home folder, so I've got the data side covered. But I don't really want to spend the next couple of weeks re-installing all the software, printers etc all over again. So is there a quick, easy way of replicating the old drive with partitions, VB, etc (I'm not that good at using the terminal) ?

I'm using xubuntu on a box that has 2 drives. One is quite small mounted as / and the other larger drive is mounted as /home Both drives are IDE The /home drive has had some failure in the past & occasionally creates errors. Is there any way of identify which sectors are bad (or good) and isolating them to try & get some more use out of the drive?
It won't be used for storing valuable data.It is an old box for visitors to use. But it would be handy to use it to store some large read-only audio files. I've installed smartctl & could post output from there if you think it is useful. I can't work out how to interpret the information.

I have two 3 hard drives, one with Linux Mint, one with Fedora, one with Windows. For some reason, I can only choose Mint or Windows in the menu at the start. Also, when I boot on mint, I see my hard drive with Windows:
320 GB Hard Drive: 320 GB Filesystem.
But for the hard drive with Fedora I only see:
1.0 TB Hard Drive: 524 MB Filesystem.
From Mint I can go in this filesystem and there is a folder name Grub, can I take the info there and paste it into Mint's grub ? If so, how ?

I installed a new hard drive to my system. I use a program called R-Drive image to copy all my os to my new drive. It done a pretty good job too, its an exact copy. I deleted the old one. But obviously now I cant boot. I had a look at the menu.lst file i dont know what to change it to. heres my drive setup,

D: - Documents - Swap File
E: - Games

I have a 250 gig usb hard drive. I would like to install Mandriva and Open Suse 11.3 on it, is this possible and how do I get the systems loaded. I got Mandriva installed, but when I tried Open Suse it trashed my Mandriva, i.e. I couldn't boot into it.

I did an installation of SUSE 11.2 on a new SCSI hard drive. Keeping the old hard drive separate. I remembered there was some info on the old hard drive I wanted. I added this to the system and mounted a partition. I then copied the data over. Then I umounted the partition rebooted the machine and removed the hard drive. However the machine will now not boot without this hard drive even though its not mounted. Not sure what the error message I am given means I think it could be trying to fchk it. Do I need to do something more like remove /dev/sdd?

I have a Sony VAIO AR series, it contains two separate 120GB hard drives that were originally configured in a raid. They're called hd0, and hd1. I disabled the raid and partitioned hd1 in 3 ways, one medium sized partition for the operating system (ext4), one large partition for storage (ext4) and one small partition for Swap space. I then installed Ubuntu onto hd1 with help from UNetbootin. After installation went fine I loaded up Windows installer, created two NTFS partitions, one medium and one large, and installed Windows 7 of the medium sized partition. Now I can't figure out how to boot into the Ubuntu side on hd1. Needless to say, in Windows, hd1 is not visable at all. I can see my two NTFS partitions fine.
When booting up I go through two main screens. The first screen "Matrix Storage Manager Option ROM," lists the physical disks (0, and 1.) and gives me the option to enter configuration with [cntrl+i]. The second screen gives me a list of options to boot from, Yet they are all Windows options and many are redundant. The list includes "Enter Command Line," which when selected tells me "Boot failed! Press any key to enter command line." command line brings me to "grub>" I tried booting Ubuntu from this command line, but don't have much to work with here. If an old bios and mainboard is being used, such that it cannot handle the large size of HD, then is it useful to say use a live CD and from its initial menu (pressed a key), choose 'Boot From First Hard Disk'? Would this be similar in getting around a bios and disk size limitation I wonder - like - does the use of a live CD in this way avoid using the bios to point to the active partition??
The reason for asking is that a friend has a couple of quality old rack mounted server machines and wants to use Ubuntu having now fitted 80 GB empty drives. Live CD seems ok, and 11.04 install goes ok but on boot up grub comes back with an error.
I recall that early machines cannot see larger(?) HDs for booting purposes even though installs go ok in very large HDs. I wondered if a live CD to boot up temporarily - trouble shooting - would be worth trying for this reason, or am I way off?

I have a dual boot machine with WinXP/Linux Mint on it. I am looking to erase both of them and put up Ubuntu 11.04.
I have chosen to go with a live USB install for this. The live USB boots fine and everything seems usable. However, when I tried to install it would tell me that I do not have 4GB available for the install which seemed a bit weird since I have a 160GB Maxtor HDD.
After digging around a bit I realized that the system does not see my hard drive. Running fdisk -l would only show the USB drive that I am booting from and not the main HDD.
I tried to have a look in /dev to see if my HDD is there and not mounted. But aside from sda which is the USB I did not find an sdb or hd entry.
Has anyone encountered a similar problem while trying to install Ubuntu 11.04?
P.S.: The HDD works fine, I can see it in BIOS and in the other 2 OS-es that I have installed.

I have a laptop with two partitions, one with Windows XP and one for storage (formatted in NTFS). I would like to install Ubuntu on the storage partition, but my problem is that I can't boot from CD (or anything else) because my BIOS is password protected. I obviously don't know the password. y question is: If I plug the laptop's hard drive into another computer, install Ubuntu as described above and then reconnect it to my laptop, will it work?

I am buying a new laptop and am curious about dual booting it. I currently run Ubuntu full time, but will need windows for a few applications. (there are no cross over applications to do this)
When you put both windows and ubuntu on a computer do you share the hard drive? Meaning would I be able to access all my music in windows and then restart my computer-run ubuntu, would I have access to all the files?

My parents bought a new hard drive for a laptop that I've owned for several years. It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.
Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.

So I built a new system few months to act as a development/"mess around with" server with an Asus Mobo and a Q6600 processor and 8 gigs of ram. Along with file, web and app hosting, I also do some virtualization on it... or atleast I had hoped to.
Ever since the first install, I've been randomly getting crashes and lockups. Sometimes it would just dump an error to the screen but stay alive, and sometimes it would dump an error and then lock up fully. The error mentions something about "kernel not tainted" etc. I will post the detailed error once it comes up again, as I have just formatted it again.
Other problems include downloaded files becoming corrupt. Files downloaded through any means (wget, torrents, ssh, ftp etc.) seem to randomly get corrupted (ie: the hashes are wrong).
I currently have one WD 150GB raptor as my primary OS partition, and 3 WD 1TB greens as my storage in an mdadm raid 5 array. At first, I had thought it was the raid array or it's drives causing issues. After painfully transfering the data off of it, I took the drives out and tried to run ubuntu with just the OS drive for a while. This still had the same issues. I then put in only one of the 1TB greens and had the same issue...
I downloaded WD's hardware diagnostic tool and ran full scans on all the drives. They all check out fine.
I left memtest running overnight and it had no errors either.
Most recently, ubuntu would not even install. It would get stuck at the stage of partitioning, and the keyboard lights would flash. After much googling, I tried popping in "noapic nolapic" to the end of the grub string, and it managed to install.
Now, I'm in a fresh system and just wgetted vmware server. However, it wont untar, I just realized the MD5 hash doesn't match!
So definately not the memory or the hds... I'm assuming it has to do with the APIC? From what I found on google, it seems as though this is only needed for the install.
Do I really need this to be on the boot string too? From what I understand, APIC allows processes to be divided out to the least loaded CPU. Having a quad core, I'd rather leave this on since it seems somewhat beneficial... I have yet to try putting this into the grub yet since I'm offsite and need
As a side note, this latest install is using just the WD Raptor as an OS drive.

An external 3½" HDD seems to be in danger of failing” it's making ticking sounds when idle. I've acquired a replacement drive, and want to know the best strategy to get the data off of the dubious drive with the best chance of saving as much as possible. There are some directories that are more important than others. However, I'm guessing that picking and choosing directories is going to reduce my chances of saving the whole thing. I would also have to mount it, dump a file listing, and then unmount it in order to be able to effectively prioritize directories. Adding in the fact that it's time-consuming to do this, I'm leaning away from this approach.
I've considered just using dd, but I'm not sure how it would handle read errors or other problems that might prevent only certain parts of the data from being rescued, or which could be overcome with some retries, but not so many that they endanger other parts of the drive from being saved. I guess ideally it would do a single pass to get as much as possible and then go back to retry anything that was missed due to errors.
Is it possible that copying more slowly — e.g. pausing every x MB/GB — would be better than just running the operation full tilt, for example to avoid any overheating issues? For the "where is your backup" crowd: this actually is my backup drive, but it also contains some non-critical and bulky stuff, like music, that aren't backups, i.e. aren't backed up. The drive has not exhibited any clear signs of failure other than this somewhat ominous sound. I did have to fsck a few errors recently — orphaned inodes, incorrect free blocks/inodes counts, inode bitmap differences, zero dtime on deleted inodes; about 20 errors in all.The filesystem of the partition is ext3.

I have a SATA drive that worked fine. Then I installed two more hard drives into my system. When these hard drives are installed, if I try to access the SATA drive in Linux, it will start lightly clicking and then the drive will become unavailable. If I power on the machine without the other two hard drives then it works fine. What could be causing this to happen? I don't think it's heat because the two hard drives are far away from the SATA drive.

I accidentally deleted the linux mint 8 that was on there due to a small issue discussed on another thread(long story followed by a stupid mistake). after then i reinstalled linux using the .iso i found on the website. all is well. I boot up linux on the external and it runs great. then i turn off the laptop and try to plug it into another laptop( which i used the external hard drive on before and worked) and it went through the bios screen but then after slight lag(5 seconds longer then usual) the blinking cursor in the top left corner would not display anything, anything meaning "booting GRUB" or any other signs of activity. after waiting some time i quit and tried it back on the other laptop, which it was just working on, only to get the same result. I am confused about why it would work the first go around but nothing past that.
The only thing i altered on the external after i installed linux was that i put my home directory into it( from another version of linux mint)

I have a Ubuntu file server and it makes the oddest sound. I can hear a HD making a "breathing" type sound, like the disc spins up for a moment and then cycles down. It happens on a very regular basis, about every 20 seconds or so. I've run every HD diagnostic I can think of, and I can't figure out what might be causing it.
The system runs Ubuntu 11.04, with a OS HD & 4 discs configured in a RAID5 array.
Is this something I should be worried about? Is there any utility I can run to see why the disc keeps spinning up?
