General :: Dual Booting From 2nd Hard Disk

I have 2 IDE drives, Windows XP is on the Master drive & Fedora 12 is on a partition the other drive. I purposely installed the Linux boot loader on the same drive as Fedora because want to use NTLDR as the primary boot loader. According to a guide I found [URL], I should be able to copy the Linux boot sector to a file & put that copy on the Windows drive & then modify boot.ini, so I am prompted to with an OS choice a startup.
The problem is the command the guide gives to copy the Linux boot sector (dd if=/dev/hdb1 of=bootsect.lnx size=512 count=1) has outdated syntax and does not work. What syntax would make this command work in Fedora 12? Another guide I found ([URL]-vista-already) suggested using: Grub4Dos & modifying boot.ini. This method almost worked until grub gave an error that there was no kernel loaded. What would I type into the grub prompt to load the kernel? How would I automate the loading of the kernel, so I don't have to specify the kernel each time?

I'm having installation issues with linux. I'm trying to set up a dual boot with vista and linux. I prepared my computer by backing up my files and partitioning my hard drive, leaving 20GB for linux. I downloaded Linux Mint 7, and booted from USB (using the universal USB installer from pendrivelinux.com). All good, entered into linux and installed by following the prompts (selecting use largest unallocated partition to point linux to the partition). At this stage the screen cleared to just leave me with the desktop background.
I patiently waited for it to reboot which never happened. So I waited for 20mins or so, then shut the computer down because I couldn't think of what else to do. When I restarted (without using the livecd/usb) it just went straight to vista. I did a bit of reading and found it might have been something to do with vista taking over grub, and some of the tutorials suggested downloading EasyBCD. So I did that, here's the summary:

Now when I turn my computer on, I get options for vista and linux. Vista works fine, but if I select Linux Mint 7 I get an error that reads "cannot load from harddisk, insert systemdisk and press any key".

I have a little/big problem. This morning, I dont know why, but suddently my hard disk was full. I thougt that the temporary space grew too mucho and I thought if I restart my machine, everything would be nice but no. Now in the logging screen comes messages that some components cant be load and so I can't go in my Fedora
I tried to access to my partition with Knoppix-livecd and free some space, but it seems that Knoppix can't access to that partition. I have installed fedora 12.

I had a dual boot (windows 7 + debian), both of them installed in my internal hard disk, with the GRUB in it. I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) �Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?

I finally have decided to give ubuntu a shot.Windows is becoming too familiar, and it's been forever since I have used command line since DOS.I really need some humility, and I think that Linux will teach me some.I am going to give it a whirl on a "spare" machine, dual booting with Windows 7 64 on two separate hard drives. I'm burning the ubuntu live cd x86 right now. I am going to unplug my windows drive and start the installation.

I am finding it hard to get 2 seperate hard drives to work each having different OS..... windows XP and Ubuntu 10.10. Making Ubuntu the master, it can recognise the drive but cannot boot from it. If XP is the master it does not recognise the Ubuntu drive at all.

I have a laptop with two partitions, one with Windows XP and one for storage (formatted in NTFS). I would like to install Ubuntu on the storage partition, but my problem is that I can't boot from CD (or anything else) because my BIOS is password protected. I obviously don't know the password. y question is: If I plug the laptop's hard drive into another computer, install Ubuntu as described above and then reconnect it to my laptop, will it work?

When you put both windows and ubuntu on a computer do you share the hard drive? Meaning would I be able to access all my music in windows and then restart my computer-run ubuntu, would I have access to all the files?

I have been messing around with the ubuntu family for some time now, and usually have no problem finding my answers. This one, however, is giving me some trouble. I have been using ubuntu on my laptop for some time now, and recently got a new 2TB hard drive for my desktop. I cloned the old hard drive to the new one, and decided to install ubuntu onto a third drive. The third drive was IDE, the new one is SATA. I disconnected the other hard drive, and so my current set up is a SATA drive with Windows 7, and an IDE drive with Ubuntu (11.04 of course)
Well, I am unable to dual boot between the two, unfortunately, and would like to figure out how. I would like to say the problem is with Windows, since that is the primary drive. No GRUB shows up upon booting when both drives are plugged in, and the Windows Bootloader does not show my installation of Ubuntu, instead it goes right to Windows.

If you have a hard disk image (including partition table, multiple partitions,...), is it possible to let Linux treat it as a regular hard disk?
By "regular hard disk" I mean I would like to have the image show up as, for instance, /dev/hdx and its partitions as /dev/hdx1,...
(I know I can mount one of the partitions in the image using "mount -o loop,offset=x ..." but I don't really like this option.)

I am a novice in Linux but due to my academic requirement I had to install Linux (Fedora 8). I have 2 hard disk's (80GB & 20GB), on the first HD which is 80GB I have Windows XP and the other one I partitioned and installed Linux. Now the first problem is that, whenever I start my PC I get a error which says "GRUB hard disk error", however when I restart the machine it's fine and gives me the boot options.
Secondly, the HD containing windows was affected by virus so I had to format & reinstall XP. Strangely after that I am not getting any boot options and it's like windows is the only 1 OS running. But on windows the partition on which Linux is installed in intact. So I assume something is deleted maybe the Linux boot file.

My system has Windows XP Pro SP2 installed on /sda1 and originally a 10.04 on /sdb1-3, now upgraded to 11.04. The Ubuntu system works fine (teething troubles with nvidia drivers on upgrade but fixed now), and the Windows system shows up in the grub menu, but when it's selected, I just get `GRUB Hard Disk Error' and nothing else. Windows installed properly, and booted successfully until I installed Ubuntu in the first place. I can still access the files on that drive from within Ubuntu.
I've tried fixboot in the Win Recovery Console, which sounded like it did something, but didn't fix the problem. This problem isn't new to grub2, by the way - I just haven't needed Windows in a year.

I have a dual boot System with Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Remix and Windows XP SP3 on an Asus eeePC 1000HE. I had some troubles with updating kernels etc. and I ended up with following problem:
After grub reinstall, I am able to boot Ubuntu, also I can mount the windows partition properly. Trying to boot into Windows, I get the error:

Some partitions don't show a file system because they are luks-encrypted.
As I mentioned earlier, I am able to mount sda1. I think the problem is that the Partition Boot Sector is corrupted, even though I am not sure if the ntfs partition is damaged at all or if GRUB is the problem.
As I said I had problems with a kernel update and therefore had to reinstall GRUB. I think, but I am not sure, that I accidentally installed GRUB on sda1 (the windows partition) instead of on sda. After I installed GRUB on sda again, I was able to boot linux and fixed sda1 with testdisk. Before, sda1 showed as four partitions (sda1p1, ... , sda1p4). I was not able to mount sda1 till I fixed it with testdisk. testdisk says the Boot Sector of sda1 is OK, so does ntfsfix.
Finally, an extract from my /boot/grub/menu.lst:

The Windows XP entry is added by myself. I don't know much about grub, so there might be the error.
I tried to keep it as short as possible (this is only the end of the story), I hope I didn't forget anything important. Please ask if there is something not clear.
I am in Tanzania with this netbook, so it is not possible to boot Windows CD and fix the windows partition with it, also I don't have a very fast Internet connection.
Is there a way to fix this without a Windows CD? Maybe it is just a dumb mistake in the menu.lst?

i started ubuntu from 9.04 now using 10.10 on my laptop. problem started when my laptop motherboard got bad beyond repair, and i had installed ubuntu 10.10 on it along with windows 7 (grub, dual boot). now i have pc running windows 7 and installed ubuntu 10.10 using wubi. i want all the settings of my laptop ubuntu 10.10 (programs installed, themes, softwares other configurations etc) to be transferred to this new ubuntu (installed using wubi) on my pc. how to do that? i have attached my laptop hard disk to my pc and am able to boot that installation on my pc, but now i have decided to remove laptop hard disk and use the same settings on pc hard disk.

after installing Ubuntu on one WD 500 GB hard disk and after making mistake and pasting wrong code into Terminal:my OTHER WD 500 GB hard disk that was also in the system (I guess it was "hd1") - died.The problem must be, I guess, I typed wrong code: "hd1,1" instead of "hd0,0".)500 GB (NTFS) of data was on that other (non-Ubuntu) hard disk, and now I can not access it anymore. I have a sata 320 gb with mandriva linux 2009.1 on it.And it is what curently atached to my cpu. It is shown as 'sda' in the partition table.I also have another 40gb hard disk with windows xp installed on it.It is shown as 'hda' in the partition table . Now what i want to do is attach this 40gb hard disk to my pc and configure grub on my 320gb hard disk('sda') so as to boot windows xp(which is residing on the second hard disk,'hda')Can anyone tell me if what im doing is feasible or not? I was using Terminal and browsing a directory in my home folder. My "home" directory is located on "/dev/sdb1". When in Terminal I typed "ls" in one of my directories and the output was garbage. i decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup,when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because,again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.
Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then,instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing,once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup,then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process,once i finished i continued to the next part,the installation,but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data,after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.
When it tried to boot,appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line,since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. I have a hard drive that I have partitioned into two large chunks. I have Fedora 12 on one, and I would like to put another distro on the other. I do most things on my Fedora, but on the Second distro, I'll be doing more sensitive things such as banking. If I wanted to "Lock out" the Banking distro, and only boot to it if I have an SD card or Flash drive, to act as a "key" would it be simple as putting the boot sector of the banking Distro onto the removable media, or is there something else I need to do?
to summarize, I'd like my system to automatically boot to Fedora, unless I have some form of removable media (preferably an SD card but Possibly a Flash drive) plugged in; in which case, I'd like it to boot to my banking Distro. What would be the easiest, way to go about this?

I'm trying to get it on my own computer at home to work on. I have an iMac, and I also have a disc with Fedora on it (along with sabayon and slax and a few others). I tried booting my computer from the disc, but when I got to the localhost login bit, I couldn't get any further. I have searched for this query already, but seemingly all the answers assume that it was installed beforehand. I haven't installed anything, just put in the disc and changed the settings to 'boot from disc' before restarting the computer. Am I missing something? Also as a separate query, how do I partition the hard drive so I can run Fedora alongside Leopard? And what is the story with virtual machines?
