I installed a new hard drive to my system. I use a program called R-Drive image to copy all my os to my new drive. It done a pretty good job too, its an exact copy. I deleted the old one. But obviously now I cant boot. I had a look at the menu.lst file i dont know what to change it to. heres my drive setup,
C: - Windows Vista - Ubuntu
D: - Documents - Swap File
E: - Games
Upon installation of Ubuntu a while back, i was using a windows xp machine with two different harddrives. Instead of formatting the xp drive and installing Linux, i decided to install Linux on the secondary harddrive. This worked all fine and dandy until recent, when I have found my linux drive filling up near capacity. I would like to format the XP harddrive and mount it in linux to give some more disk space. The problem i have found, is that the XP drive is the drive with GRUB.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI accidentally deleted the linux mint 8 that was on there due to a small issue discussed on another thread(long story followed by a stupid mistake). after then i reinstalled linux using the .iso i found on the website. all is well. I boot up linux on the external and it runs great. then i turn off the laptop and try to plug it into another laptop( which i used the external hard drive on before and worked) and it went through the bios screen but then after slight lag(5 seconds longer then usual) the blinking cursor in the top left corner would not display anything, anything meaning "booting GRUB" or any other signs of activity. after waiting some time i quit and tried it back on the other laptop, which it was just working on, only to get the same result. I am confused about why it would work the first go around but nothing past that.
The only thing i altered on the external after i installed linux was that i put my home directory into it( from another version of linux mint)
I have 2 ubuntu's: 1 on my ineternal hard drive, 1 on my external
When I startup without my ext drive =>GRUB error 21.
And when I plug it in I can choose: the standard ubuntu kernel is the one on my external, and the original one is listed under other...
I'd like to be able to startup without external hard drive and make the ubuntu on my internal drve the standard.
i have ubuntu 10.10 installed on a 40gb hard drive and have setup arch linux on a seperate 160gb drive and am at the Choose bootloader screen of Arch Linux. My question is do i use arch linux to reinstall GRUB or do I choose none and configure GRUB to see both? if its the later can you tell how. Oh and Ubuntu is on sda and Arch is on sdb

I can boot to the Ubuntu installation in the 2TB drive. My problem reversed when I reinstalled grub to one of the Ubuntu installations in the 1TB drive. I can boot to any of the OS's in the 1TB drive, but not to the Ubuntu in the 2TB drive. The error message is the same as above. I have no idea what am I doing wrong and I would be really grateful for any assistance.
installed Ubuntu 9.10 in an internal SATA drive and used it for quite a while, but yesterday my laptop's graphics card decided to die, and it looks like it will be a full month until I get replacement m/b. Therefore, I bought an external USB SATA Hub for my laptop's drive, but I can't seem to be able to boot ubuntu from this drive. I'm trying to boot with this external usb hub attached to an old P4 machine with USB booting enabled.I get till the grub screen, but as soon as the message "Grub loading" appears, I get a message saying:error: no such partitionand I get a prompt as follows:grub-rescue>I guess grub is trying to boot to a different device name... It's weird, I thought Ubuntu should boot irregardless of which interface I use, be it SATA or USB.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have two 3 hard drives, one with Linux Mint, one with Fedora, one with Windows. For some reason, I can only choose Mint or Windows in the menu at the start. Also, when I boot on mint, I see my hard drive with Windows:
320 GB Hard Drive: 320 GB Filesystem.
But for the hard drive with Fedora I only see:
1.0 TB Hard Drive: 524 MB Filesystem.
From Mint I can go in this filesystem and there is a folder name Grub, can I take the info there and paste it into Mint's grub ? If so, how ?
I have a 250 gig usb hard drive. I would like to install Mandriva and Open Suse 11.3 on it, is this possible and how do I get the systems loaded. I got Mandriva installed, but when I tried Open Suse it trashed my Mandriva, i.e. I couldn't boot into it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI did an installation of SUSE 11.2 on a new SCSI hard drive. Keeping the old hard drive separate. I remembered there was some info on the old hard drive I wanted. I added this to the system and mounted a partition. I then copied the data over. Then I umounted the partition rebooted the machine and removed the hard drive. However the machine will now not boot without this hard drive even though its not mounted. Not sure what the error message I am given means I think it could be trying to fchk it. Do I need to do something more like remove /dev/sdd?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Sony VAIO AR series, it contains two separate 120GB hard drives that were originally configured in a raid. They're called hd0, and hd1. I disabled the raid and partitioned hd1 in 3 ways, one medium sized partition for the operating system (ext4), one large partition for storage (ext4) and one small partition for Swap space. I then installed Ubuntu onto hd1 with help from UNetbootin. After installation went fine I loaded up Windows installer, created two NTFS partitions, one medium and one large, and installed Windows 7 of the medium sized partition. Now I can't figure out how to boot into the Ubuntu side on hd1. Needless to say, in Windows, hd1 is not visable at all. I can see my two NTFS partitions fine.
When booting up I go through two main screens. The first screen "Matrix Storage Manager Option ROM," lists the physical disks (0, and 1.) and gives me the option to enter configuration with [cntrl+i]. The second screen gives me a list of options to boot from, Yet they are all Windows options and many are redundant. The list includes "Enter Command Line," which when selected tells me "Boot failed! Press any key to enter command line." command line brings me to "grub>" I tried booting Ubuntu from this command line, but don't have much to work with here. If an old bios and mainboard is being used, such that it cannot handle the large size of HD, then is it useful to say use a live CD and from its initial menu (pressed a key), choose 'Boot From First Hard Disk'? Would this be similar in getting around a bios and disk size limitation I wonder - like - does the use of a live CD in this way avoid using the bios to point to the active partition??
The reason for asking is that a friend has a couple of quality old rack mounted server machines and wants to use Ubuntu having now fitted 80 GB empty drives. Live CD seems ok, and 11.04 install goes ok but on boot up grub comes back with an error.
I recall that early machines cannot see larger(?) HDs for booting purposes even though installs go ok in very large HDs. I wondered if a live CD to boot up temporarily - trouble shooting - would be worth trying for this reason, or am I way off?
I have a dual boot machine with WinXP/Linux Mint on it. I am looking to erase both of them and put up Ubuntu 11.04.
I have chosen to go with a live USB install for this. The live USB boots fine and everything seems usable. However, when I tried to install it would tell me that I do not have 4GB available for the install which seemed a bit weird since I have a 160GB Maxtor HDD.
After digging around a bit I realized that the system does not see my hard drive. Running fdisk -l would only show the USB drive that I am booting from and not the main HDD.
I tried to have a look in /dev to see if my HDD is there and not mounted. But aside from sda which is the USB I did not find an sdb or hd entry.
Has anyone encountered a similar problem while trying to install Ubuntu 11.04?
P.S.: The HDD works fine, I can see it in BIOS and in the other 2 OS-es that I have installed.
I seem to have a complex issue on my hands that i can't figure out. first, i wasn't able to get access to my LVM'd hard drives via SSH without half of the content being missing or locked out (read-only or unable to open at all). the problem then went up to being unable to boot up - all i got was a long slew of [100.1234] ata1.00: error messages (they eventually DO stop once they get to around 998.234234 or whatever, and then i can log in and it seems to be "stable").
Part way through this rebooting ordeal i realized / decided to make power-on-self-test stop and wait if it finds errors (via bios) - that showed me that my 750G SATA drive is "bad" and my two (older) 120G & 250G IDE drives are "ok". i then unplugged the SATA drive, rebooted, and didn't see those error messages. however, my LVM was still obviously not coming together (since LVM was made up of the 120G, 250G, and 750G drives)
So, now it seems:
a) I can't boot smoothly with all drives in place
b) I can't do anything with lvm if i remove the 750G sata
c) With all drives hooked up, i can wait 10mins for the errors to go away, but STILL can't do anything with lvm
d) I need to recover the lvm stuff so that i can nicely migrate ALL those files (1.1TB of it) onto a new 1.5TB drive and do away with lvm
This is all running ubuntu 7.10 server edition (32-bit version on a 64-bit computer). i DID post a question on the ubuntu forum as well but so far got no replies at all.

After a stint of using Ubuntu exclusively, I'm trying to install Windows 7 again. However, when I select boot from CD/DVD in the boot menu, I just get the GRUB menu.

I would like to install Ubuntu on the storage partition, but my problem is that I can't boot from CD (or anything else) because my BIOS is password protected. I obviously don't know the password. y question is: If I plug the laptop's hard drive into another computer, install Ubuntu as described above and then reconnect it to my laptop, will it work?

When you put both windows and ubuntu on a computer do you share the hard drive? Meaning would I be able to access all my music in windows and then restart my computer-run ubuntu, would I have access to all the files?
I have another question. When again restart the computer, I lost everything I had installed before. I am sure there is option somewhere to be turned on. I do not know where it is? Is there anybody can tell me where it is? I have installed UBUNTU on the external hard drive.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my hard drive. The results are worse I keep getting segmentation fault errors, black screens, lock ups, etc. This time I can't get it as stable as on Wubi. It can't stay stable more than 3-4 minutes - then the interface blinks and goes to black screen or shows weird colored strips/squares, locks up or shows tons of errors in the terminal. I did the kernel recovery mode partition check, no errors were found. I installed 9.04 on my harddrive, everything works fine, I log in and it stays great for about 1 or 2 minutes, then it freezes.
It shows the terminal with 'segmentation fault' errors, or goes to black screen and locks up. Alt+SysRQ+B is the only solution and sometimes it doesn't work either. I got Ubuntu 9.04 running through Wubi before and it ran perfectly stable occasionally on few boots. But I can't get it like that on my hard drive installation It just keeps crashing. I did a long memtest (10 tests passed), ubuntu file disk check went fine, my current operating system Windows 7 runs great and another Live CD Linux based system like Knoppix runs perfectly stable. Should it be a driver issue?
I have a mini ITX computer that runs a software that I have been trying to clone to another hard drive as back up. When I do clone it, it is the exact same copy down to every byte. When I try to boot from the cloned hard drive, it starts booting, then displays some text:
Then is says some of the files are not found including a encryption signer key not found.
I do no know the next step I need to take. Is this becasue it is running off a different hard drive? I do not understand a bzImage too well, but does it have anything to do with that file?
Recently, I decided to wipe my system, put in two 250GB hard drives and rebuild my home file and print server. One of the hard drives is a SATA drive, and the other is not. In any event, they are identified as /dev/sda and /dev/sdb in Gparted. So far so good.
Working on (reading from/writing to) the first hard drive (where the OS is installed) is no problem. However, I have had difficulty trying to get my system to recognize my second hard drive and then allow me (nate) to read and write to said second drive. I followed these directions from the ubuntu community web page during installation:

and setup my second hard drive with an ext3 file system. The drive is /dev/sdb. The PARTITION is /dev/sdb1. The MOUNT POINT is /media/TheBase250.
The problem(s) begin at this point. I cannot:
1. Unmount the volume at my will-error says that only root can unmount
2. I am not sure if the command sudo chown -R nate:nate /media/TheBase250 allowed me to take full ownership of said drive. It appears as if nothing changes when I run this command in terminal (even when I am root) Moreover, I cannot give myself permission to read and write files to the drive.
3. However, when I open up nautilus, browse to "TheBase250", right-click in the corresponding "explorer" or "finder" window and look at the properties for the drive, it says that "nate" is the owner (under the permissions tab), but again, I cannot give myself FILE read/write capabilities, nonetheless anyone else. When I try, all that happens is the corresponding box goes back to displaying "---"
4. Interestingly, if I skip nautilus and double-click on the drive from my desktop, again, logged in as nate (only user account created) and then proceed to right-click on the window that opens up, click properties, half the time it says that I cannot make changes to the permissions because I am not "nate." Well, last time I checked, I am nate, and this is, albeit delinquent, my computer.
5. Another piece of information that may be helpful is that if I simply right-click on TheBase250 drive icon on my desktop itself, navigate to the permissions tab, the dialogue box says that "The permissions of "TheBase250" could not be determined"

I was trying to install a new hard drive and in the process have managed to not only format my old hard drive but lost all my stuff as well. I am running a live CD but unable to mount the said hard drive. I Know its there.
fdisk tells me:
As you can see its still registering as /dev/sda, I am unable to mount this to run a undelete program on it.
a e2fsck tells me
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock: e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
Is there a way to install grub2 from a linux live cd when linux isn't installed on any of the partitions? I'm setting up a multiboot partition for someone and I don't want to install linux anywhere on the computer since hard drive space is running short.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo I JUST installed 10.04 on a new hard drive for the third time. I had it completely wipe the hard drive and install ubuntu itself (so i couldn't mess anything up). Well NOW it won't even boot up ubuntu much less my windows hd.
So the setup is, my first harddrive which is 640gb and has my windows on it, and then my second harddrive which is 80gb and has my freshly installed ubuntu 10.04 on it. Neither will load. I don't even get a loading screen, I just get a flashing line after my mobo's splash screen.
I ran some boot loader info script and one of the first lines was

I have installed ubuntu in automatic mode. when i removed it from computer by removing partition(let E by going to disk management in xp, the portion of drive where the ubuntu was installed automatically get primary partition. then i created the new drive from that partition in XP(let E. Later on when my XP got corrupted and i installed fresh xp then when i tried to access the drive i created(E says the file system not supported need to format the disk.
Also when i tried to install fresh copy of linux in those partition it never get install on those partition.
Now the issue is i cannot use those partiton due to fear that incase windows get corrupted my all data in that partition will be gone. Currently i am not having any linux on computer due to shortage of disk space.
I am trying to install Debian onto an IBM ThinkPad 240X. The 240X will only boot from either an internal IDE hard-drive, or an external floppy-drive. For now, I have decided to ignore the option of using the floppy drive. I have other computers to support the process, an IBM ThinkPad T43p (Pentium M) as well as my primary laptop, a ThinkPad X200s (Core2 Duo). I have tried installing the hard-drive to be used into the T43p, then booting the Debian NetInstall from a USB thumb-drive, installing as usual, then transferring the hard-drive into the 240X. This does not completely work; GRUB and LILO will load, but the computer freezes very early (almost immediately) in the boot process.
Please note, I am trying this on a CF card. The 240X has an IDE-CF adapter, and my X200s has a USB-CF reader.So, I want to try to load the actual Debian Net Install on the 240X. Ideally, it will happen something like this; I will partition the hard-drive into these 2 partitions:
sda1: the Debian Net Installer
sda2: an empty partition waiting to have Debian installed onto it URL...
but the part I do not understand is how to get GRUB or LILO installed onto the CF card. I am wary of running commands such as "grub-install" as I do not want to mess up my GRUB install on the computers this command would be run from. If I run a command such as this, I would want it to ingore everything about the computer it is being run from, and only modify files or install onto the CF card. I would not want it to acknowledge the computer it is being run from as far as available installs, architecture, etc.
I did a quick search but came up with nothing. I'll list things in point form to make it less confusing
-I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 with GRUB 1.97
-I have Windows 2000 installed on VirtualBox
-I have an NTFS partition with just music and my data on it, but no windows OS
-I want to take what I have on VirtualBox and put it on my NTFS partition
