I am completely new to linux an have read the replies to similar questions but am unsure of how to access the directory mentioned ~/.gconf/system/networking .I also do not have a system recovery disc or flash drive
View 7 RepliesI have had my little netbook for over a year now but I must admit, that Linpus and I do not like each other (thinking of having someone put Ubuntu on it - heard thats better).Now I have moved and am trying to get my netbook to access the new internet connection. So far so good. The wireless connection is standing (100% connected), but now I get the message Server not found. I am using Firefox by the way. And yes, I have googled this problem, all plus are plugged, I have been online with this computer before etc.And right now I am online with my second computer, which has no problems accessing the internet.What now? I must also say that for a NETbook I am having a hell lot of trouble going online... Where other computers just connect, this little devil has problems very often.

View 1 Replies View RelatedOK I do have a file called firefox-3.6.3-tar.bz2 which I downloaded from the mozilla web site. This file sits now in "Downloads". /home/usr/downloads now I want to rename the old firefox 2.0 version just in case I am going to mess up something. I believe the "old" version sits in /usr/lib - so I just can rename this with mv firefox to firefox.old right? if I have done that how can I unpack and install the firefox-3.6.3-tar.bz2 file?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI haven't had a problem with this yet, but today I was online via my wifi connection and then the network center said there was no connection. My modem said I had full bars, and I tried restarting both the modem and the laptop, but nothing. The internet works if I plug in the ethernet cable, but will not pick up the wifi signal. I called my service provider and for 2 hours they couldn't figure out how to connect it because it has Linux. They tried to set up a new password protected network because they said the modem was working fine, so they had me delete the old network from the computer... but when I tried to set up a new network it still was not picking up a wireless signal. Ive tried flicking the switch on the front of the laptop and it still will not pick up a signal. Please help me out with this... I have no clue how to use Linux!

I've followed previous threads and learned how to add/remove programs and I've downloaded wine. My wine programs show up under 'other' and I have: wine configuration; wine file; wine boot; wine software ininstaller and winhelp (not sure if the last is wine or not) Just can't navigate my way through any of these to find how to actually RUN wine. Also, if you think this is not the best way to fully use poker websites (I'm not happy with the iphone style no download play) or iTunes.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI can't seem to install ubuntu minimal off the alternate CD on my new Acer Inspire One. Using an external CD drive doesn't seem to work. When I create a bootable usb with unetbootin fails when it tries to mount a cd drive. The only advice I can dig up is to do a default install off the live cd, but that's not what I want -- I need a minimal install.
I have access to a usb drive, blank cd and dvd disks, a desktop computer, and my Acer. The desktop has windows xp, a version of ubuntu server 8.04 that hasn't been updated for a long time, and no internet connection. It also has an internal cd drive that can only read, not burn, disks, and which i have a usb adapter for. The Acer has internet and windows 7 starter.If I really needed to, I could get access to a dvd burner. If I really really need to, I could get my desktop hooked up to the internet, but I'd have to lug the thing on the bus to work, so I'd prefer not to go that route.
I'm running 64 bit Lucid on a HTPC that is networked with a Windows 7 64 bit laptop. Up until this morning, sharing media between these two worked fine. When I attempted to connect through Rhythmbox to play music, the computer couldn't find the files. I attempted to access the network through Nautilus and it was unable to mount the location. So I tried the Create Launcher command and created a link of the network on the desktop. I was prompted to login and it worked perfectly This has happened once before and the only way to fix it was to reinstall Ubuntu.I would very much like to avoid that if possible as the system is setup perfectly.
I wouldn't bother with the issue if it didn't prevent me from adding my music files to Rhythmbox. I have run findsmb as well as smbtree. Smbtree returned nothing and findsmb had a dotted line with nothing underneath. Nothing has been removed. I did install security updates this morning, but since it has happened before, I am more inclined to thing it is a bug or conflict somewhere.

I read that a right click on the network manager icon (top right) should show a list of the available wireless networks, but for me none appear. Ive tried to manually connect to the network by putting the IP address etc, but this still doesn't work. I have been able to connect to the internet but with an ethernet cable. the wireless card is the Atheros AR5001. This is my first time using linux and any help would be great.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI've got my other networking problem (mostly) solved, but now I'm having other issues.I was previously able to access the shared folders on a Windows machine on the network essentially by default. Now whenever I try to navigate to the shared folders graphically (either through Places->Network->Windows Network->(workgroup name here), or through a custom shortcut on the deskop), I get a message: "Failed to retrieve share list from server". I have no idea what I might have done config-wise (or install-program-wise) to screw it over, but something's definitely not working...it's been like this for a good many weeks, and I've just dealt with it, seeing as how I don't normally use that shared folder much anyway.
What's really ticking me off now, though, is that long before this started happening, I had set up a printer share with the same computer (using the graphical tool that comes with Ubuntu), and that worked excellently to start out. Recently, however, when I tried to print from the same printer (after the "Failed to retrieve share list" message started showing up), it would sit there and show "Pending"; it wouldn't print at all. Then I tried deleting the existing entry and creating a new one, figuring a new, fresh configuration would be created. However, when I tried to add a printer via the graphical tool (same as I had done before), it's telling me that "No printer was fount at [that] address".

The database have a scheduled job to fetch some files from another server using ftp, and herein lies the problem.he job runs a pl/sql that runs the function in an (by us compiled) external libraryThe ftp-functionality itself is done by using libncftp and it's API's.The process starts correctly, but then trying to login to the actual ftp host, ncftp only reports "Unknown username/password" (which is not the case).I have the exact same code in an executable and when run from an interactive shell, it works fine.So the only thing I can come up with, is there are differences when the process is started by Oracle, rather then being ordinary" process.And I am stuck.If there are any environment variables, paths etc missing when running the extproc-process, how do I find out which?Because the real problem is NOT wrong user or password.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI recently installed OpenSUSE 11.2 and everything works fine except wi-fi card, of course. The problem is that after installation the system recognized the card (is was listed in network devices in Yast) but I was unable to enable it through network-manager applet. Though the device could make scanning through terminal (found article in docs but didn't fully understand wpa_gui). Then i was stupid enough to delete the device from Yast list to try to reinstall it. So the problem is that i simply can't do this cause i see no way to re-detect. That is the goal is to at least turn back to post-install system state and try to enable wifi card again.

I upgraded my desktop from 9.10 to 10.04. The updated system works without problem - except that apt-get/Update Manager/Synamptic does not connect to the net anymore.
When I try to check for updates with the update manager, I get the message below. I have set different servers with the same result, and checked if there is a proxy set up somewhere, which is not. I also tried apt-get with the fix flag.
When I access the uri's with a browser, that works without a problem.

I have a troubling networking situation that is compounded by the system being remote without any out-of-band mgmt in place nor a serial connection - but am relying on a coworker entering commands into the terminal for me, or doing stuff in the GUI I have an FC12 i386 install running, that was up and stable for 6 days. Primarily this was only being used for a deployment of nTop. Up through Monday evening, I was connecting to the system (in NY) via VNC (here in SF), and was successfully watching nTop do its thing.
Tuesday morning, I go to connect to SSH and I can't get in. The NAT translation is still in place on the firewall, but there is no connection to the NIC/eth0 from the router. This is what I've had my coworker run:

I was going to try and have her run the /sbin/mii-tool eth0 tomorrow a.m. just to verify that the interface isn't physically bad? But this is a brand new desktop, and I can't for the life of me understand why this interface went down. I also have the internal IP on a DHCP reservation, which is the same IP listed in IPADDR in the ifcfg-eth0 file - could this be a problem? should I remove the DHCP reservation? I did this so I could SSH to a public IP which I have NAT'd back to the internal 10.0.x.x address I had my coworker take a look at the GUI, and the eth0 properties are "inactive" and the "Activate|Deactivate" buttons are greyed out.I suppose I can have my coworker grab the /var/log/messages and copy to a USB drive, then email me that from another workstation.

As I understand the main problem is in "(IP Config Get) timeout exceeded".
Configuration: Kubuntu 10.04 x86, VPN server with MSCHAPV2 auth, no compression, no encrypting.
I have been getting internet thru the NetworkManager service in FC12. Suddenly today it refused to connect. I tried turning the service on and off, made sure logon info was correct, no luck. Finally I just turned it off and turned on Network service, and that worked. Is there some kind of bug in NetworkManager these days?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI connect to the WPA2-secured wifi of a university. They use 802.11b/g on the 2.4 GHz band and 802.11a/n on the 5.2 GHz band. Both have the same SSID xyz (for roaming).Now, when I connect to the SSID xyz, ubuntu 11.04 (natty) chooses the Access Point with the highest Strength. However, this is a 802.11g Access Point which is very slow because of high usage and there is no 802.11n available. Slow pings make it unusable.network-manager is just too stupid to connect to the much faster 5GHz 802.11n AP.Windows 7 autmatically connects to the 5GHz 802.11n Adapter with 300Mbit/s. That's what I would expect from ubuntu as well. I think Mac OS X also performs great in such situations.
The only workaround for me is to enter the BSSID (Mac-Address) of the 5 GHz AP directly in network-manager. That works and I have 802.11n with up to 300 Mbit/s. However, this is not the perfect solution, because now I can't use roaming any more (we have lots of APs here!).Do you have any Ideas to prefer 5 GHz band over 2,4 GHz band? I also tried the "band" gconf option as well as kernel module options of module iwlagn with no success.
I recently installed ubuntu 10.10 on my aspire 3000 and everything seemed to work just fine... until I tried to activate desktop effects. tu put it simple, it just don't work. I checked and doubled-checked the lsmod | head to make sure that my drivers (sisfb / sis_drv.so) were installed and loaded. they were. I then made sure that my pc was opengl-supporting (Glxinfo | grep "direct rendering". The answer was positive. With that in mind, I tried many different ways to run compiz(compiz --replace, appearance-desktop effect, run app-compiz) but neither if these gave any results.

When I try to connect to my network the only options I see for security are dynamic WEP (802.1x) and WPA &WPA2 Enterprise and for authentication all I see is TLS LEAP Tunneled TLS and Protected EAP (PEAP). I can connect to my network when I drop security on the network but other wise I am stuck. I have been trying to fix it for about a week now by myself to no avail

View 15 Replies View RelatedI followed (or at least tried to follow) tutorials on doing this. I installed network-manager-pptp and tried to configure network manager to connect to a VPN. In the settings when I select MPPE with 128-bit encryption, after I've selected it and applied it, I check the settings and it's invariably unchecked. I tried using KVpnc after getting frustrated with network manager, and I can't seem to get that working either. I've been trying to search for info on this, and I can't seem to find anything on why I can't select MPPE with 128-bit encryption. That seems like it might be why I'm unable to connect to the VPN?

I have a 64bit ASUS with a nVidia ethernet interface........I have just recently switched to cable broadband with a wired connection direct to the eth0 port. I have another computer running puppy linux in which the broadband works. hence this is how I am typing this now. I have connected my ubuntu machine to the cable and the network admin shows a wired connection but will not let me browse on the net with any browser. Not really sure how I got puppy to find it, but it did.
I have used the network manager on both machines with one connecting and the other not. I know there a newer ubuntu's out but I really do like Hardy and want to keep it, but without internet connection other than dialup it seems a bit lame. I am not above using command line options as I use wodim and wget all the time, so my question is.
I have duel boot (XP & Jaunty). I have installed Jaunty in one of my parition through wubi installer. Problem is, though my network connection shows active, I am unable to connect internet via firefox browser or any other browser.
