Ubuntu Networking :: Network Manager Chooses Wrong Access Point?
Sep 1, 2011
I connect to the WPA2-secured wifi of a university. They use 802.11b/g on the 2.4 GHz band and 802.11a/n on the 5.2 GHz band. Both have the same SSID xyz (for roaming). Now, when I connect to the SSID xyz, ubuntu 11.04 (natty) chooses the Access Point with the highest Strength. However, this is a 802.11g Access Point which is very slow because of high usage and there is no 802.11n available. Slow pings make it unusable.network-manager is just too stupid to connect to the much faster 5GHz 802.11n AP.Windows 7 autmatically connects to the 5GHz 802.11n Adapter with 300Mbit/s. That's what I would expect from ubuntu as well. I think Mac OS X also performs great in such situations.
The only workaround for me is to enter the BSSID (Mac-Address) of the 5 GHz AP directly in network-manager. That works and I have 802.11n with up to 300 Mbit/s. However, this is not the perfect solution, because now I can't use roaming any more (we have lots of APs here!).Do you have any Ideas to prefer 5 GHz band over 2,4 GHz band? I also tried the "band" gconf option as well as kernel module options of module iwlagn with no success.

I installed the driver for my network card. iwconfig and ifconfig are all responsive to connecting to the network, I'm given an access point address. Then, I try to connect to a website and no dice. ping www.google.com yields no result. What gives?

I have had this configuration at home for years, but I just changed my line provider and I cannot get it to work.
I have a desktop machine with two ethernet interfaces, eth0 and eth1. Etho is connected to the cable modem and that seems to be working fine - well, I'm posting here, right? Eth1 is connected to a Linksys WAP54G wireless access point. I have eth1 set to 192.168.1.240 and the AP set to 192.168.1.245 (the default). The desktop runs CentOS and I have dhcpd running, and I have focused on the dhcpd.conf file, which I have changed many times. Here is the latest incarnation:
Code:
#
# DHCP Server Configuration file.
# see /usr/share/doc/dhcp*/dhcpd.conf.sample

I'm trying to configure internet access using KDE network manager. Added new VPN pptp connection, set gateway and other options but manager tries to connect for about a minute and breaks then. Here is /var/log/daemon.log
Code:
Jul 1 17:35:22 dvinokurov-desktop NetworkManager: <info> Starting VPN service 'org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.pptp'...
Jul 1 17:35:22 dvinokurov-desktop NetworkManager: <info> VPN service 'org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.pptp' started
[Code]....
As I understand the main problem is in "(IP Config Get) timeout exceeded".
Configuration: Kubuntu 10.04 x86, VPN server with MSCHAPV2 auth, no compression, no encrypting.

These problems just started the last couple of days but I have been using Lucid 10.04 for a month now. My wireless Signal varies in strength wildly. I sitting at home, not 20 feet from my router. I never had these problems before Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04. I am running both Network Manager and Wicd.
Errors:
1. Wicd states "Wrong Password" which is not true.
2. Dropping off-line for no reason, sometimes 3 or 4 times a minute and sometimes it works fine for hours.
3. Firefox 3.6.3 Automatically Checking "Work Offline"!?
[Code]...
I have the Proper Wireless Drivers. I have not changed my wireless settings, channel or WPA for 8 months now so I know thats not it.

I have a troubling networking situation that is compounded by the system being remote without any out-of-band mgmt in place nor a serial connection - but am relying on a coworker entering commands into the terminal for me, or doing stuff in the GUI I have an FC12 i386 install running, that was up and stable for 6 days. Primarily this was only being used for a deployment of nTop. Up through Monday evening, I was connecting to the system (in NY) via VNC (here in SF), and was successfully watching nTop do its thing.
Tuesday morning, I go to connect to SSH and I can't get in. The NAT translation is still in place on the firewall, but there is no connection to the NIC/eth0 from the router. This is what I've had my coworker run:
[code]...
I was going to try and have her run the /sbin/mii-tool eth0 tomorrow a.m. just to verify that the interface isn't physically bad? But this is a brand new desktop, and I can't for the life of me understand why this interface went down. I also have the internal IP on a DHCP reservation, which is the same IP listed in IPADDR in the ifcfg-eth0 file - could this be a problem? should I remove the DHCP reservation? I did this so I could SSH to a public IP which I have NAT'd back to the internal 10.0.x.x address I had my coworker take a look at the GUI, and the eth0 properties are "inactive" and the "Activate|Deactivate" buttons are greyed out.I suppose I can have my coworker grab the /var/log/messages and copy to a USB drive, then email me that from another workstation.

I installed ZTE MF 626 modem in my F10 with kernel 2.6.27.12-170, i run usb_modeswitch and so far things happened normally. Watching through /var/log/messages it says that F10 detects two port device for this modem: ttyUSB1 and ttyUSB2, and in the sequence it disable port ttyUSB1 BUT Network Manager still set this port.I mean, when i connect via wvdial appointing to ttyUSB2 i get connection, but Network Manager fails to do it appointing to ttyUSB1. How to change device port in Network Manager?

I have a wireless network in my house through a Zyxel P-320W router, and I've noticing that the signal strength isn't very good in the basement. Now I have this old D-Link-624+ router lying around for a long time and I've been hoping to get it to work as an access point, that way I can move freely around the house without changing which router I'm connected to.

I have a Sonicwall access point, which I am able to set up through the interface, but after that I am unable to achieve a connection through my wireless card. I have a good understanding of everything involved, but really have no hands on experience when it comes to networking.
Code:
lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 735 Host (rev 01)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] Virtual PCI-to-PCI bridge (AGP)
[code]....
Also, I should have mentioned that @ the interface for the Sonicwall it said that "no DNS server had been specified", but I set it up for DHCP, and I thought my ISP is using PPPoE (which I also thought used DHCP).

I'm trying to set up a wireless access point and router using Ubuntu 10.10. My machine has an Atheros AR5001X+ PCI card, and eth0 is connected to an ADSL modem. After literally days and days of going in circles, I'm hoping that somebody here can help get me on track. This sort of works, though I had to go through some other contortions to get the madwifi driver to finally compile on my machine. At this point, I can see and connect to the WAP, but nothing more. When I try "sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart",
I also have a second problem, which is that I want to use WebMin to manage this server, but I cannot figure out how to get the ADSL client module configured -- RP-PPPoE version 3. It seems to expect to work with pppoe-start, pppoe-stop, and pppoe-status, but when I try to run pppoe-status it says "Link is down", even though my ppp connection is actually working. Is is possible to use the WebMin ADSL client module with Ubuntu? I spent a lot of time trying to get pppoe-start, stop, etc. working but it was a complete mess and never seemed to behave. Finally, I just put the ppp startup commands into the /etc/network/interfaces file and that worked, but now the pppoe-* commands no longer seem to function.

I installed it alongside Win XP, using Wubi, and it seems I use Ubuntu 10.04.Everything worked out as expected, and my wired internet connection works like a dream. However:My wireless connection seem a little buggy.I can see all networks (except WPA2) so even if I want to fix the WPA2 problem, I'd rather just open my network for now.
So my network is now open, I see it in the NetworkManager list, and as i try to connect, the following happens:The wireless symbol start flashing. From here it keeps flashing, untill it gives up.I use RT2870 drivers, and D-Link DWA-140 USB wireless adapter.
It goes without saying I am a freshman regarding Linux, so if anyone knows what to do, and cares to take the time to tell me, please do tell me in a detailed manner.I do know the basics of the Terminal, and yes, I do know how to copy/paste commands I find linux way more satisfying than Windows so far ... And thanks in advance for giving away your time More info can be given upon request (You might have to explain how to find that specific info)

About two years ago, my church set up a wireless access point. They gave it a WEP encryption, and wrote all the keys down on a piece of paper and taped it to the router, which was in full view, and reachable for anyone to get what they need and connect. I used it once, saved all the settings to the default network manager applet on my laptop (running Fedora Core 12), and put it back. Earlier this year, the front hall (where the router and paper with encryption keys was stored), was completely redone, and the router put up in the drop ceiling.
Mistake. Now the darn thing is sitting on top of Fiberglass insulation, and impossible to get to. There are people who need to connect, but since it's a church, and they don't really understand, they went and buried that router WITH all the encryption keys. So long story short, I need to get these people connected, but need to find the key... preferably without Hacking in. Is there a way, on the default "Network Manager" Applet, or in the terminal to VIEW saved keys?

I've a Nokia 2323 Classic which I want to use to access to the internet on my laptop.
A friend of mine with a Dell Inspiron 15 running Windows 7 could connect to the net by just pairing up and right clicking on my phone's icon in the devices menu and selecting connect to internet via access point.
I've an eMachines E725 which lacks bluetooth. To overcome this I used a dongle which was able to successfully pair up with my phone via the bluetooth menu in preferences.
So what next ? How do I use the phone to connect to the internet directly via access point ?
I noticed that I did not need any operator related settings to do so in windows 7 and the phone worked regardless of SIM card present so I assume it should work similarly in linux.
What is left is to ask the system to treat it as an internet access device and use it that way.
How do I do it ? I don't mind a commandline way but a GUI would be better because I'm not the only person using my laptop.

I am in a situation at the moment which means I am going to be without an ISp for a week or two, and I can't survive that long without the intenet!!! What's more, I have 8 computers that need to connect, though not necessarily at the same time, but certainly more than one at a time. Anyway, I came up with an idea to buy a Mobile Broadband Dongle, and then share the connection via my PC. Problem is, I don't know how I would go about setting my PC to be a Wireless Access Point/makeshift Wireless Router, and sharing the connection.

Ubuntu 10.10 (kernel 2.6.35-23, amd64), Network Manager is installed, the laptop HP 6735s (I am certain that wifi is working, - I can connect to other wireless networks), connected to the Internet through ppp0 (VPN), eth0 looks at LAN interface, WiFi - eth1 (info from iwconfig).
WiFi driver "Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driverfor use with Broadcom's BCM4311-, BCM4312-, BCM4321-, andBCM4322-based hardware" is installed.
Objective - to create WiFi access point and connect through it to ppp0 with my phone (HTC Desire) or other devices.
My VPN connection (ppp0) and network are registered through my internet provider's script - [URL], not set up not by Network Manager. If I create a new wireless network in NM (point-to-point or access point, IPv4 set to auto) - laptop can not find the network, Internet immediately fall off. Through the manual settings and complex scripts that I found websites and forums I could not get it to work ..

10.04 in a couple of identical lenovo laptops (of friends) suddenly have stopped connecting successfully to wireless, coinciding approximately with a mains power socket fail at the modem router, now fixed. presumably the machines were trying to connect to the access point, which may or may not have been working, but themodem router was not. Now, internet connection and wireless access point is fixed ok and is back up, and i can connect wirelessly to the access point ok using an eeepc with 10.04.2 with no problem so the access point is working ok
the target laptop/s are still ok via wired ethernet, and can *also* connect to a neighbours open wireless (a british telecom so called fon network, it asks for an account password), and all local wireless networks can be seen normally, and the home access point ssid can also be seen ok. so the aptop wireless is connecting ok, but not to this particular access point now. maybe someting has got screwed up? it is wpa2 and when clicked, after a long-ish time, the authentication is requested, then given, correctly, and still not connecting, asks for authentication again etc etc. no local secure wallet is being used.
when upgrading these laptops for my friend some time ago from 9.04 i have a small recall that 10.04 had a odd thing with wireless authentication (?) bug? i have deleted the network connections gui listing for this ssid and restarted the laptop, still no joy.

Can I turn it in2 an access point/wifi for other devices like iPods, Wii, Labtops, ect? Also, how would I do it if not Wifi, use the other Ethernet port to plug up say a labtop. In which the labtop uses the net I am getting from the router?
