General :: Acer Aspire One With Linux Linpus Will Not Connect To WiFi
Jan 9, 2011
I haven't had a problem with this yet, but today I was online via my wifi connection and then the network center said there was no connection. My modem said I had full bars, and I tried restarting both the modem and the laptop, but nothing. The internet works if I plug in the ethernet cable, but will not pick up the wifi signal. I called my service provider and for 2 hours they couldn't figure out how to connect it because it has Linux. They tried to set up a new password protected network because they said the modem was working fine, so they had me delete the old network from the computer... but when I tried to set up a new network it still was not picking up a wireless signal. Ive tried flicking the switch on the front of the laptop and it still will not pick up a signal. Please help me out with this... I have no clue how to use Linux!
Today my Menu Bar and WiFi icon disappeared from my desktop. How can I get it back as I am no longer able to connect to the internet , seee my battery status or log out ?
I powered up the acer aspire one zg5 and it goes to the first screen but does not connect to the internet when I press the internet button the wifi connection is fine and will download updates fine but will not connect to the browser, am so out of my depth as not familiar with this system , if I dont fix this will have to blame one of the kids.
my old firefox is obsolete. I've downloaded 3.6, successfully as far as I can see, but it's just sitting there on the hard drive as a file, it doesn't start up, I just get the same old version 2 which came with the machine and it's dead in the water really.
I'm trying to use iTunes and poker sites on my acer aspire one with linux linpus lite. I've followed previous threads and learned how to add/remove programs and I've downloaded wine. My wine programs show up under 'other' and I have: wine configuration; wine file; wine boot; wine software ininstaller and winhelp (not sure if the last is wine or not) Just can't navigate my way through any of these to find how to actually RUN wine. Also, if you think this is not the best way to fully use poker websites (I'm not happy with the iphone style no download play) or iTunes.
This is my first mail here. I've tried to update Firefox 2 to Firefox 3.6 on Acer Aspire One running Linux Linpus. Downloading goes ok, but how to start the update?
I have a problem with certain web sites, mainly BBC when the page just disappears and it just reverts to my desktop.I tried installing more up to date version of Firefox but it keeps on happening- mainly it seems when BBC site has fancy graphics.
I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my Acer Apsire T690 3.0Ghz compy. My graphics and sound is integrated and I'm looking for the right drivers. I would just run the driver search on ubuntu, however, that PC is not hooked up to the internet and cannot be easily. Is there a way for me to manually find and install the drivers I need on another computer, transfer and install them? I searched on [URL]... but I couldn't find any drivers that were for my T690 and compatible with Linux.
My laptop connects fine wirelessly but when I try connecting with the cable it won't connect. I have tried an identical laptop and that connects fine so it must be the laptop but I don't know why.
My landlord upstairs just got a new modem and WiFi by Clear.com and when trying to get the WiFi to work...it just wouldn't connect with my laptop. They have 2 computers upstairs, one laptop and one desktop that recognized the WiFi and don't have any trouble using it. Wondering if there is something I have accidently clicked or changed to make it not connect. It does not have an error message, it just does not connect completely.
Fresh install Ubuntu 10.10 on Acer Aspire 5050 with new hard drive. I struggled to turn the Wifi's button turn on but led light always on. It does not detect wifi driver. I installed ndiswrapper to get Acer's Winxp driver: netathr.inf by Windows Wireless Drivers from Ubuntu Software download. It's same thing as ndiswrapper.
I can get wired internet if i connect the laptop to the router, but no wifi since I think I dont have the drivers. i dont see anything in aditional drivers.
I have a Laptop PC Acer Aspire 1710 and OpenSuse 11.2 installed on it I tried to setup my wifi card but it doesn't workI checked the log system log file.Apparently the driver cannot be loaded :

i bought this computer yesterday and the wireless network isn't working. I read that a right click on the network manager icon (top right) should show a list of the available wireless networks, but for me none appear. Ive tried to manually connect to the network by putting the IP address etc, but this still doesn't work. I have been able to connect to the internet but with an ethernet cable. the wireless card is the Atheros AR5001. This is my first time using linux and any help would be great.
I have had my little netbook for over a year now but I must admit, that Linpus and I do not like each other (thinking of having someone put Ubuntu on it - heard thats better). Now I have moved and am trying to get my netbook to access the new internet connection. So far so good. The wireless connection is standing (100% connected), but now I get the message Server not found. I am using Firefox by the way. And yes, I have googled this problem, all plus are plugged, I have been online with this computer before etc.And right now I am online with my second computer, which has no problems accessing the internet. What now? I must also say that for a NETbook I am having a hell lot of trouble going online... Where other computers just connect, this little devil has problems very often.
I assume the operating system for the Aspire One i have called 'Linpus' made by Linux is designed to be effectively bullet proof (it being a netbook), and as such installing any new programs or modifying anything is a bit more tricky. I didn't realize this, although I am fully behind my choice of Linux over Windows still, I just didn't realize it was a 'lite' version that meant simple tasks were a bit more complex.
That said, would most people suggest changing the OS of this 1gb RAM 8gb HD netbook to a more open version of Linux? If this is even possible or recommended. Not sure what the options are, would love a heads up. But to my main question. I am trying to update drivers on my old Windows DELL Inspiron which I 'nuked' using DBAN (which was loads of fun when I finally got it to work! Loved typing in 'autonuke'!! ) so need to download its wireless driver files i 'nuked' using my Aspire One and Linpus - hopefully directly to the USB Flash drive I have made by Lexar.
However, when I plug in the USB Flash drive to any of the 3 USB ports there is no automatic response. I can't find it using my 'windows knowledge' looking through folders and such, and there is no 'My computer' icon in this Linux Linpus Lite. So where I find my USB Flash drive? Does Linpus support this?
OK I do have a file called firefox-3.6.3-tar.bz2 which I downloaded from the mozilla web site. This file sits now in "Downloads". /home/usr/downloads now I want to rename the old firefox 2.0 version just in case I am going to mess up something. I believe the "old" version sits in /usr/lib - so I just can rename this with mv firefox to firefox.old right? if I have done that how can I unpack and install the firefox-3.6.3-tar.bz2 file?
For some reason, Ubuntu will not connect to a wireless network. It will occasionally connect, but I will open a page and it will not load. Soon after it would disconnect.
I usually used freebsd. Now I decided to try linux and selected CentOS 5.5. I installed it on my notebook Acer Aspire 5930G (I tried both i386 and x86_64 versions) and I have problems with cable networking. I selected static network configuration during install. Internet access is working via NAT on freebsd server.
I can ping anything in my LAN, I can ping any host in internet, nslookup works fine, but nothing else isn't working. I can't wget even in my LAN, can't connect to FTP server in my LAN etc. The same with internet hosts. Iptables turned off, iptables -l shows that all chains are in ACCEPT. SElinux turned off. NAT for accessing internet works fine - when I reboot to windows 7 with same network config internet is working. I guess this could be problem with driver for my NIC - Marvell Yukon 88E8071 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet. But I can't change it on notebook :)
I am completely new to linux an have read the replies to similar questions but am unsure of how to access the directory mentioned ~/.gconf/system/networking .I also do not have a system recovery disc or flash drive
My friend has a Acer Aspire One netbook that runs on linpus. It has difficulty connecting via the internal wi-fi interface to the BT Homehub (802.11n) If I were to pick up a wi-fi adaptor such as:

Where could I find the drivers to make this USB stick work?
I have a new Acer Aspire One, model D250-1958. It uses the Atheros AR928X. I've tried Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 and Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04, as well as the conventional Ubuntu. Everything works beautifully, except no wireless. The netbook picks up the signal, but when I provide the Key it fails to connect, and eventually prompts me for the key again.
I've tried to research this on my own, but haven't found a solution. In particular, the solution reported by narnie for his Acer Aspire One D250-1584, <HERE>, didn't work for me.
I'd really like to get this working. The netbook will be much less useful if it can't make use of our wireless router.
i bought an Acer aspire one through an official acer website and i got it for cheaper than a XP one, i got it with Linux on it. As i am someone that looks for a great deal. i took it, I then realized that Linux is pretty hard to operate.can i replace linux with window?
I have an aa1 with the original set up but fire fox is to old for some sites how can I instal a new vertion Sorry, its is an acer aspire 1 with linpus, I think, it comes pre installed with fire fox but an old version.
my aspire one netbook which uses linux will not start. when i press the power button, it starts booting then will just give me a blank screen. my problem is that i dont know my system user password so can go into setup.
i have lost internet on acer aspire one when i tried to add firefox 3.6 and cannot solve the problem.....i have tried several times and nothing works, it tells me it either failed or is unknown..... i can't even get back to firefox 2....everything was ok until i added adobe flashplayer and when i rebooted to make it work there was no internet at all and it's my sisters netbook not mine.
