I downloaded packages for Network Manager in gnome, but couldn't find where to get access.
So I entered the Command -
sudo nm-applet
[sudo] password for geoff-1:
An instance of nm-applet is already running.
how I can get access to the applet?
I use network manager applet 0.7.1. I had set the automatic wireless connection to my my wireless network (WPA key secured). Recently, I get the following problem: At the automatic connection, I get the message: Network manager applet (/usr/bin/mn-applet) needs default keyering. As I don't know what it is to type it and then, deny or OK, it doesn't get connected to my wireless network.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently installed OpenSUSE 11.2 and everything works fine except wi-fi card, of course. The problem is that after installation the system recognized the card (is was listed in network devices in Yast) but I was unable to enable it through network-manager applet. Though the device could make scanning through terminal (found article in docs but didn't fully understand wpa_gui). Then i was stupid enough to delete the device from Yast list to try to reinstall it. So the problem is that i simply can't do this cause i see no way to re-detect. That is the goal is to at least turn back to post-install system state and try to enable wifi card again.

Where can I find it to add it to a new panel?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently acquired an HP2133 netbook. It comes with SUSE 10 enterprise desktop pre-installed. WI-FI was working fine, though a slight pain for asking for the key every time. I thought I would apply all updates I could find and that may improve my networking.Having applied all I can find the wi-fi is now broken.If I use YaST I can see the Broadcom internal device seems to remain recognised, it even has the configuration I set for my wi-fi network access.The problem seems to be the NetManager applet, which denies all knowledge of wi-fi now and only has wired (which is working).Ironically the update causing the failure was applied wirelessly.I am slightly at a loss how best to proceed - I was going to cut my losses and make another boot partition with Ubuntu, but the live CD I made failed to run so that I could make a flash boot version, I shall have to return to that.
I have also now discovered that SUSE 10 is a bit long in the tooth - I sort of assumed it was current, given I bought the machine recently. So I'm wondering if it would be best to take the hit and reformat completely? I know it is broadcom, so should not be a problem, and I have been through ndiswrapper and the like in the past, though somehow I seem to have forgotten all about it now!I was happy enough with the SUSE setup and this is highly annoying as I was only updating to fix an annoyance and now the wifi has been broken... Perhaps there is an alternative applet to the netmanager that may play with the card and allow me to connect to networks?I look forward to recommendations, at this time my primary objective is to restore wifi functionality, longer term perhaps I need to review distro and installation, but I should like to do that on a dual boot basis I think
I'm not sure if I have two seperate issues or one inter-related issue. The Network Manager applet wasn't appearing in the tray, found out it wasn't installed. Installed, still didn't appear. Tried installing WiCd, WiCd did appear but couldn't find any networks. I had installed restricted drivers previous, decided it was worth another look. Found that Broadcom STA Wireless Driver wasn't installed. Tried to install, it said it couldn't and said I should review the var/log/jockey which is....excessively long.

I just came from the library and was unable to connect to their wi-fi because the computer wasn't trying to detect it. All I have is a network connections applet that seems fairly useless as it just gives me info on networks I've used in the past and not on any currently available networks.How do I get this Network Manager back and functioning?
View 1 Replies View RelatedYesterday while trying (unsuccessfully) to get a new Bluetooth dongle set up I lost the network manager applet. When I rebooted, after giving up on Bluetooth in Ubuntu, I had no way of connecting to my wireless network. In command line (iwconfig & iwlist scan) I was able to see the wireless router. So the wireless card is working correctly. How do I reinstall the network manager applet? Oh even when use a wired connection to the router there is no connection.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've noticed an issue since the last 10.10 update with the network manager applet. When I first start gnome, the network manager works fine. However after some length of time or trigger that I don't fully understand yet, it ceases to function any more. None of the menu items respond. The issue does not seem to be with the actual networking system as I can connect to the internet, ssh, etc fine. I can restart the applet like so:

I lost my network manager applet after removing kde-desktop. restore it, as I dont find it in add to panel applications I dont have any clue, also how could I add bluetooth applet in notification area.
View 5 Replies View RelatedOn about 90% of bootups I find that network manager has disappeared from the notification area to be replaced by a random duplicate of one of the other icons (at random). If I remove the notification area and add it again all is fine.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was running Ubuntu 9.10 on my HP G70 laptop and did an upgrade using upgrade manager to Ubuntu 10.04.
Since I haven't been able to get wifi connection or wired working. The Network Manager applet is missing from the notification area and if I try to run nm-applet manually it says it is already running. I tried killing the process and then running it manually in the terminal and although the process appears to be running it is missing from the panel.
Booting into the live cd has the applet working fine so something in the upgrade process must have failed.
I tried changing the theme to see if it displays in other themes but had no luck.
I also tried to log into kde but kde seems to be broken. When I log into it after the splash screen all I get is a black screen with only my mouse pointer.
My family uses a computer running Ubuntu 10.04. We each have a separate login. This computer connects to the internet via wifi.
A behaviour which I have noticed is as follows - the first user to log in gets the network manager applet icon. So they can control the network connection. Any other user that subsequently logs in does not.
Now this is a real pain in the butt as sometimes our wifi connection drops and I might have left my wife logged in and used the 'switch user' function to get access to my login. The only way I can access the applet is by switching back to her login.
Is there any way to make this appear in everyone's login's at the same time?
Accidentally I removed the NM Applet from the panel and I am trying to reset it. When I right-click on the panel and "Add to Panel", I couldn't see Network Manager. Hence I couldn't connect to the available wireless network. I am able to add Network Monitor, which is similar to Network manager, but this just displays info about current network.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from 9.0X to 10.04 on my Sony Vaio VGN-TZ398U which has an internal Sprint mobile broadband card. The card operates properly along with the wireless. The problem that I am having since upgrading is that the Network Manager Applet icon that looks like a cell phone bar display does not show in the notification area at all unless there is a known wireless (wifi) network nearby.
Clarification: If I am in my car, the icon does not show which then makes it impossible to connect using the mobile broadband functions of the Network Manager Applet ( version 0.8 ). If I am in my office with a known wireless network, the icon shows and then I can switch to the mobile card.
I have tried removing the notification area from the panel and adding it again. I have done the same with the indicator applet. Neither has solved this problem.
I have assigned ip address to laptop by editing /etc/network.interfaces. From next reboot the Network Manager Applet which was present on right hand upper corner, disappeared. I wonder why? This has happened with 9.04, 9.10 and now in 10.04. Another question is, are Network Manager settings (ip) and /etc/network/interfaces do correspond to same thing or not? As I have narrated above, since network manager applet is no more visible how to see the physical network cable connectivity status (as we do in windows xp)? (is there any other app of such kind or what?)
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just started using fedora 13 and I am not sure if i am in the right area but here goes...today I was online in my fedora 13 partition on my laptop and I had been online for quite a while then I shut down my machine to recharge the battery then a couple hours later I turned it back on and all of a sudden my network manager applet was missing and I could not connect to the internet, I opened firefox and tried to get to my homepage but it basically just told me that I wasnt connected..
I suspected at first for some strange reason that MAYBE it was my NIC so I booted up into my vista partition and low and behold the internet works fine, so the problem is on the linux side, I have tried every command nm-applet but it just keeps saying an instance of nm-applet is already running, I have no clue how to restore the network manager and get my internet back and the only other piece of information I have is that earlier today I did do a bunch of security updates but the internet was working fine all day even after several reboots through out the day.
Whenever I start up my laptop i do not get a wireless connection automatically. I have to rightclick network manager applet and select enable networking. After that everything works fine untill i shutdown and restart my laptop. I would like a way to change this so that my wifi connection is working whithout having to click something first..

It's kind of weird but the network manager applet on the top right of the desktop is "Crossed" even if I have internet up and running. I installed Xfce desktop environment and deleted it and after that event it happened.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI upgraded my desktop from 9.10 to 10.04. The updated system works without problem - except that apt-get/Update Manager/Synamptic does not connect to the net anymore.
When I try to check for updates with the update manager, I get the message below. I have set different servers with the same result, and checked if there is a proxy set up somewhere, which is not. I also tried apt-get with the fix flag.
When I access the uri's with a browser, that works without a problem.

I'm trying to configure internet access using KDE network manager. Added new VPN pptp connection, set gateway and other options but manager tries to connect for about a minute and breaks then. Here is /var/log/daemon.log

As I understand the main problem is in "(IP Config Get) timeout exceeded".
Configuration: Kubuntu 10.04 x86, VPN server with MSCHAPV2 auth, no compression, no encrypting.
I'm running 64 bit Lucid on a HTPC that is networked with a Windows 7 64 bit laptop. Up until this morning, sharing media between these two worked fine. When I attempted to connect through Rhythmbox to play music, the computer couldn't find the files. I attempted to access the network through Nautilus and it was unable to mount the location. So I tried the Create Launcher command and created a link of the network on the desktop. I was prompted to login and it worked perfectly This has happened once before and the only way to fix it was to reinstall Ubuntu.I would very much like to avoid that if possible as the system is setup perfectly.
I wouldn't bother with the issue if it didn't prevent me from adding my music files to Rhythmbox. I have run findsmb as well as smbtree. Smbtree returned nothing and findsmb had a dotted line with nothing underneath. Nothing has been removed. I did install security updates this morning, but since it has happened before, I am more inclined to thing it is a bug or conflict somewhere.
I connect to the WPA2-secured wifi of a university. They use 802.11b/g on the 2.4 GHz band and 802.11a/n on the 5.2 GHz band. Both have the same SSID xyz (for roaming).Now, when I connect to the SSID xyz, ubuntu 11.04 (natty) chooses the Access Point with the highest Strength. However, this is a 802.11g Access Point which is very slow because of high usage and there is no 802.11n available. Slow pings make it unusable.network-manager is just too stupid to connect to the much faster 5GHz 802.11n AP.Windows 7 autmatically connects to the 5GHz 802.11n Adapter with 300Mbit/s. That's what I would expect from ubuntu as well. I think Mac OS X also performs great in such situations.
The only workaround for me is to enter the BSSID (Mac-Address) of the 5 GHz AP directly in network-manager. That works and I have 802.11n with up to 300 Mbit/s. However, this is not the perfect solution, because now I can't use roaming any more (we have lots of APs here!).Do you have any Ideas to prefer 5 GHz band over 2,4 GHz band? I also tried the "band" gconf option as well as kernel module options of module iwlagn with no success.
I have a troubling networking situation that is compounded by the system being remote without any out-of-band mgmt in place nor a serial connection - but am relying on a coworker entering commands into the terminal for me, or doing stuff in the GUI I have an FC12 i386 install running, that was up and stable for 6 days. Primarily this was only being used for a deployment of nTop. Up through Monday evening, I was connecting to the system (in NY) via VNC (here in SF), and was successfully watching nTop do its thing.

I was going to try and have her run the /sbin/mii-tool eth0 tomorrow a.m. just to verify that the interface isn't physically bad? But this is a brand new desktop, and I can't for the life of me understand why this interface went down. I also have the internal IP on a DHCP reservation, which is the same IP listed in IPADDR in the ifcfg-eth0 file - could this be a problem? should I remove the DHCP reservation? I did this so I could SSH to a public IP which I have NAT'd back to the internal 10.0.x.x address I had my coworker take a look at the GUI, and the eth0 properties are "inactive" and the "Activate|Deactivate" buttons are greyed out.I suppose I can have my coworker grab the /var/log/messages and copy to a USB drive, then email me that from another workstation.
I am completely new to linux an have read the replies to similar questions but am unsure of how to access the directory mentioned ~/.gconf/system/networking .I also do not have a system recovery disc or flash drive
