View 1 RepliesI have had my little netbook for over a year now but I must admit, that Linpus and I do not like each other (thinking of having someone put Ubuntu on it - heard thats better). Now I have moved and am trying to get my netbook to access the new internet connection. So far so good. The wireless connection is standing (100% connected), but now I get the message Server not found. I am using Firefox by the way. And yes, I have googled this problem, all plus are plugged, I have been online with this computer before etc.And right now I am online with my second computer, which has no problems accessing the internet. What now? I must also say that for a NETbook I am having a hell lot of trouble going online... Where other computers just connect, this little devil has problems very often.
View 2 Replies View RelatedOK I do have a file called firefox-3.6.3-tar.bz2 which I downloaded from the mozilla web site. This file sits now in "Downloads". /home/usr/downloads now I want to rename the old firefox 2.0 version just in case I am going to mess up something. I believe the "old" version sits in /usr/lib - so I just can rename this with mv firefox to firefox.old right? if I have done that how can I unpack and install the firefox-3.6.3-tar.bz2 file?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI haven't had a problem with this yet, but today I was online via my wifi connection and then the network center said there was no connection. My modem said I had full bars, and I tried restarting both the modem and the laptop, but nothing. The internet works if I plug in the ethernet cable, but will not pick up the wifi signal. I called my service provider and for 2 hours they couldn't figure out how to connect it because it has Linux. They tried to set up a new password protected network because they said the modem was working fine, so they had me delete the old network from the computer... but when I tried to set up a new network it still was not picking up a wireless signal. Ive tried flicking the switch on the front of the laptop and it still will not pick up a signal. Please help me out with this... I have no clue how to use Linux!

I've followed previous threads and learned how to add/remove programs and I've downloaded wine. My wine programs show up under 'other' and I have: wine configuration; wine file; wine boot; wine software ininstaller and winhelp (not sure if the last is wine or not) Just can't navigate my way through any of these to find how to actually RUN wine. Also, if you think this is not the best way to fully use poker websites (I'm not happy with the iphone style no download play) or iTunes.

I bought a nice new Acer Athlon II x2 yesterday with the intention of using it as my main stable, every-day system. As it came pre-installed with Windows 7 Home Premium, my plan was to dual-boot between W7 and an as-of-yet undecided 64-bit Linux OS (probably Slackware's 64-bit variant).
Anyway, it wouldn't connect to the Internet. Everything else seemed fine but this. Being too lazy to really look into it myself at the time, I called up Acer tech support and shared my problem. We did a ping test and she said the problem's with the ISP not the hardware, so I went there to find many of their customers seemed to be getting bad or no connection. Thinking that was likely my problem too, I left it at that.
Well today after work I decided to boot my Puppy Linux USB stick onto the machine to see if it's just W7 being Microsuck, and attempting to connect, Puppy couldn't find the correct module to load that would result in a new interface (network) being detected. Annoyed, I tried Puppy Linux on an old tower I'm currently working on for my parents (still working on that one btw for anyone who remembers me from last week) and it connected fine. I'm actually using that system as I type out this post. Running other Linux OSs on my new machine does the same thing (no connection). Going back to W7, I tried letting them do their diagnostic thing and it came up with this:
Quote:
Local Area Connection doesn't have a valid IP address.
Not fixed.
Clicking for more information I get:

I have an Acer 3280TG which has ATI Switable Graphics, intel integrated graphics card and ATI HD5650. I would like to -always- use intel integrated on linux and apparently I'm using the HD5650 because my battery is taking a major hit, only lasting 2h10 instead of 4h on windows. Plus, even though the brightness key commands work, there is no difference in the screen real brightness. I can set brightness to the minimum and it will be at the maximum. By the way, after installing the ATI proprietary drivers I get a black screen after the splash screen of ubuntu, to get ubuntu back I have to delete the X11 conf file.

Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server. " Error.jpg also tried searching in the forum but it was so confusing, as am Newbie i have no idea where to start.

Where could I find the drivers to make this USB stick work?
Just bought a brand new Acer Aspire 5745G, straight away I wanted to install Ubuntu 10.10, I stuck in the cd and rebooted the new laptop that currently only seemed to have Linpus Linux, I then got masses of error messages saying something such as cannot run var/ etc etc and then
:cannot touch 'var/lock/subsys/local': input/output error
and then...
EXT2-fs error (device sda1) : ext2_lookup: deleted inode referenced (lots of numbers here)
It does this for many, many lines then sites there for ages doing nothing and wont allow me to type any commands ( I dont know any command really apart from 'reboot') and then finally after 5 mins or so shows the command prompt [root@localhost /]# but I cant do anything from here.
I've done some searches and found this thread:

but startx and system-cofig-display dont work and just says bad commands.
Ive also tried changing the settings so it always reboots from dvd, same problem, made a USB ubuntu start up, forced booting from usb, same again.
have Acer Aspire One netbook with Linux Linpus Lite. I have downloaded Java in order to be able to play Yahoo games, to no avail, each time I try I get the reply "Java is not enabled in your browser" and I cannot get it to work. Is it possible that Yahoo games only work in Windows?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've just bought an acer aspire one and didn't know the OS was linux. I thought I'd give it a go anyway. I've now done this but have no idea how to go about installing the software.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI had to reinstall everything on my ACER aspire one, and now I can't unrar rar files with xarchiver. I tried installing ARK but that didn't work, and instead of troubleshooting why Ark isn't working I'd really just like to get Xarchiver to work. I uninstalled and reinstalled using yum but that didn't change anything.I also tried installing the source code of xarchiver 5.0 from a tar.gz, but the ./configure needs to be able to find gtk+-2 and for some reason it can't.

View 4 Replies View Relatedi bought this computer yesterday and the wireless network isn't working. I read that a right click on the network manager icon (top right) should show a list of the available wireless networks, but for me none appear. Ive tried to manually connect to the network by putting the IP address etc, but this still doesn't work. I have been able to connect to the internet but with an ethernet cable. the wireless card is the Atheros AR5001. This is my first time using linux and any help would be great.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI assume the operating system for the Aspire One i have called 'Linpus' made by Linux is designed to be effectively bullet proof (it being a netbook), and as such installing any new programs or modifying anything is a bit more tricky. I didn't realize this, although I am fully behind my choice of Linux over Windows still, I just didn't realize it was a 'lite' version that meant simple tasks were a bit more complex.
That said, would most people suggest changing the OS of this 1gb RAM 8gb HD netbook to a more open version of Linux? If this is even possible or recommended. Not sure what the options are, would love a heads up. But to my main question. I am trying to update drivers on my old Windows DELL Inspiron which I 'nuked' using DBAN (which was loads of fun when I finally got it to work! Loved typing in 'autonuke'!! ) so need to download its wireless driver files i 'nuked' using my Aspire One and Linpus - hopefully directly to the USB Flash drive I have made by Lexar.
However, when I plug in the USB Flash drive to any of the 3 USB ports there is no automatic response. I can't find it using my 'windows knowledge' looking through folders and such, and there is no 'My computer' icon in this Linux Linpus Lite. So where I find my USB Flash drive? Does Linpus support this?
I own an Acer Aspire One which has Linpus Lite installed. Last night I attempted to delete a couple of files only to find they are read only and that I cannot change the permissions by right clicking and changing the drop down menu from read only.
These aren't protected files or anything, they are files I've downloaded or created myself (one using the onboard web cam to test it).
I attempted to play with Terminal for a bit but as a newbie I got easily lost, not like I can fall back on command prompt knowledge from Windows!
I think it's somehow connected with the user which accesses these docs or tries to change the permissions. I also tried with an su- which meant I was using Terminal as root, however, I wasn't sure how I could then set the permissions for a particular file/folder within the file system.
I prefer ubuntu (which I have been meaning to install for a while) but my netbook currently has linpus lite on it. (It's an acer aspire one). One night I left the netbook sitting open (forgot to close it), and when I went to use it the next day, when I started it up, the desktop did not show the normal icons in the background. It still showed the bar at the bottom with the connection icon, power icon, etc. as well as the "Internet" search bar in the top right corner.
But instead of the usual linpus desktop icons, there are just black and white horizontal bars, with some coloured dots in the black bars. I can still use the terminal to open firefox, and presumably other programs. It still connects to wifi signals, and the bottom bar looks normal and functional. I am posting this message right now with my netbook, and it doesn't seem to have lost any functionality. I would much rather just click on things most of the time instead of opening terminal for everything.
I have a Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 motherboard with integrated graphics that shows up on lspci as an ATI Radeon 2100. I also bought a PCI-Express Nvidia graphics card so I could use the VDPAU feature on Linux (plays H.264 in hardware). The BIOS has three settings about which display to initialize first:
Integrated graphics
PCI graphics
PCI-Express graphics (PEG)
I set the BIOS on PEG, but
I cannot get anything, not even a splash screen or POST messages, to emerge from the PCI-Express graphics card. (I'm using a DVI connector; the card also has an HDMI output.)I cannot get the kernel lspci to see the graphics card; the only VGA controller it acknowledges is the integrated one.Running dmidecode acknowledges the existence of an x16 PCI Express slot, and it says
Current usage: Unknown
There is an additional BIOS setting called "Internal Graphics Mode" which is normally set to "Auto" which means it is supposed to prefer a PCI Express VGA card. I set it to "Disabled" which now means I'm getting no output at all. I will soon be learning how to do a BIOS reset!
Other information: The PCI-E card is a MSI N210-MD512H GeForce 210. This is a fanless card. Although there are no fans to see turning, the heat sink on the PCI-E card is definitely getting hot, so the card is getting some sort of power. It gets all its power from the PCI-E slot; there is no external power connector. The BIOS is an AMI Award BIOS.how can I make the PCI Express graphics card visible to Ubuntu?
I'm currently using the Linux Linpus Lite distribution on my Acer Aspire One netbook. Unfortunately, I'm suffering a problem connecting to a network attached storage drive that is wired to my LAN. I have no problem connecting to this particular device through Windows terminals and the device itself works perfectly. The particular drive in question is a Freecom FSG-3. However, as the file manager in Linpus Lite does not appear to support local networking as a native function, I have tried (unsuccessfully) various methods to overcome this issue. In particular, I have created a folder in the root directory called 'NetFolder.' Following this I right-clicked on this folder and picked the 'Open Terminal Here' option.
I then typed the command line:
I. First attempt I tried: sudo mount -t cifs -o username=[MY USERNAME],password=[MY PASSWORD] //10.0.0.3/fsg NetFolder
II. Second attempt I tried: sudo mount -t cifs -o username=[MY USERNAME],password=[MY PASSWORD] //10.0.0.3 NetFolder
III. Third attempt I tried: sudo mount -t cifs -o //10.0.0.3/fsg NetFolder
IV. Fourth attempt I tried: sudo mount -t cifs -o //10.0.0.3 NetFolder
The username and password I have listed are the credentials I use to access this NAS through my Windows explorer (it allows me to view all the files on the drive and does not give access to specific FTP user accounts). In addition, the 'fsg' following the '10.0.0.3' is the network name for this device (the way it appears is you look for the device on a network management utility). After trying them all of the above combinations, the Terminal application has displayed a number of error messages and I cannot see the contents of the NAS (which I should do if the attempt to add this drive is successful). For example, the error message I received after trying statement I. above was "mount error: can not change directory into mount target NetFolder."
I just downlaoded a .repo file from the pidgin website, and iot says to move this folder to /etc/yum.repos.d/ but it wont let me paste the file into this folder.
