View 5 RepliesSo I aquired an old laptop on it with xp and I am wanting to wipe the current xp installation and reformat the drive and install fedora. How do I go about formatting the hard drive? I currently have the live cd image but I am not sure if I can format the whole drive while in the live cd mode. I have only ever used linux side by side with windows so i have never needed to do a reformat in a linux environment.

View 8 Replies View RelatedThe sound on my system is really low. I am using a Toshiba Tecra M3 laptop with Intel sound.

I tested both Rhythmbox and Gnome Mplayer. Both are low when using headphones and very low when using the laptop speakers. I checked the alsa configuration via alsamixer -c0 and everything looks good. I have attached my alsa-info.txt file.

I cannot get sound out of the headphone port on a laptop. Headphones are plugged in, and sound comes out of the internal speakers. Windows behaves normally (sound switches to headphones when headphones are inserted).
It did work in Linux at one point, but something changed, we're just not sure what. Rebooting doesn't fix. This appears to occur whether or not PulseAudio is running. code...
This works in Windows: You plug headphones in, the internal speakers stop making noise, and noise comes out the head phones. Windows says I only have two sound cards: the HDMI port (which I don't care about) and the "sound card", which it claims is a "Conexant Pebble High Definition SmartAudio" In Windows, both the internal speakers and the headphone jack show up as one soundcard, which in my experience, is typical. (This is a laptop)
I have just installed Ubuntu 7.04, Wine and Vlc. All my videos and mp3 files can play but with no sound or error massages. I am using Vlc for both videos and sound.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have trying to figure out for the past two weeks why the internal speakers are not working with Ubuntu 10.04.
Have gone as far as upgrade alsa but gosh...! However, if i use external speakers, the sounds play very well.
I like ubuntu and i would not like to go back to windows..
How to resolve the sound issues on ubuntu 10.04 with laptop compaq 610?
I used fedora 11 with no problem. Then I did a fresh install of fedora 12. The laptop started making some strange noise something like water dripping or like that. I noticed this long back but I couldn't describe the problem so I waited if I can find something on my own. Even now I'm not sure if anyone can understand whats going on. Just trying my luck. To make sure it was not my laptop( hardware ) problem I went back to fed 11, no strange sounds there. Same thing happened when I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 from Ubuntu 9.04. I'm no expert in operating systems. I do not know what is common in Ubuntu 9.10 and fedora 12 , but they are giving the same problem.

I am running fedora 14 64 bit on Dell Inspiron. All of a sudden sound from speakers is not coming. They work in windows. I am suspecting some update with pulseaudio. However, earplugs work.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm new to linux and have an old laptop did clean reinstall windows 98 but no updates, and now burnt iso image to cd on other pc and used it to try running puppy linux 3.01 on the compaq armada laptop (spec 56.0MB RAM, AMD-K6(tm)-III Processor used space 645MB free 3.80GB). I chose this older version as I think I'd read that this is more suitable for older slow computers.
I am interested in running linux fully without windows 98 or with it. Running from CD I have to select Xvesa I think as Xorg didn't seem to work. Tried partitioning but in GParted find myself unable to amend the size of partitions - got yellow exclamation mark next to the partitions. What I see is: greyed out unallocated 7.38MB, then /dev/hda1 yellow exclamation mark filesystem unknown 206.72MB, /dev/hda2 yellow exclamation fat32 4.45GB.
It does not allow resizing when I try. Associated with the yellow exclamation marks is the warning "unable to read the contents of this filesystem! Because of this some operations may be unavailable. I have done a defragment of C in windows already. (Also haven't been able to connect to internet on linnux with my wireless card.)

ive installed ubuntu for netbook on my laptop, everything went fine, it installed ok, and it was all good, until i tried clicking on the icon im supposed to click on to get conncected to wifi. where it's supposed to have various wireless networks it says "device not ready (firmware missing)" and ive tried everything i can think of to get it working, but it wont work. the same thing happens with my desktop computer, but with ubuntu desktop 10.10 and linux mint... but with the desktop, its probably just a case of finding drivers for my specific wireless adapter, in which case can anyone tell me where i can find the driver for a belkin F6D4050ea for linux?

View 10 Replies View RelatedI have an HP Pavilion dv9000 which I would like to use completely with any Linux OS. I have tried to install Linux Ubuntu 10.04.1 but it appears that it doesn't recognize the external monitor and ends the installation. View 2 Replies View RelatedI am new to fedora 13. My problem is that I can not hear any sound from my laptop's internal speakers (that works f9 in windows--so no h/w probs!) but when I connect external headphones, everything is heard.I have tried several commands from various internet sources since past one week. I don't understand many of the commands that I have run, but that has somehow helped me to run media files and hear sound on HEADPHONES.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've just joined the linux gang(or I am trying to) I have
-downloaded desktop/netbook edtion
-burned to dvd using infrarecord
-changed bios settings to boot from cd
-didn't work
-used the override feature that gives a bootlist at splash screen but cd drive not listed so I assume the cd is not recognised as a boot disk
-tried the usb/cd maker that comes with in the rar but its looking for the cd image...an .iso file, but I can't find one in folder.
ubuntu says I can run a trial from the cd alongside vista but when I open the executable it just offers intall, no try and if selected starts to install I think I can do the partition thing if I have to but I don't want any vista running on my machine.
