General :: Connecting To Wifi After Installing OS On Laptop As Well As Computer?
Mar 30, 2011
ive installed ubuntu for netbook on my laptop, everything went fine, it installed ok, and it was all good, until i tried clicking on the icon im supposed to click on to get conncected to wifi. where it's supposed to have various wireless networks it says "device not ready (firmware missing)" and ive tried everything i can think of to get it working, but it wont work. the same thing happens with my desktop computer, but with ubuntu desktop 10.10 and linux mint... but with the desktop, its probably just a case of finding drivers for my specific wireless adapter, in which case can anyone tell me where i can find the driver for a belkin F6D4050ea for linux?

Running 9.10 Ubuntu on my laptop. It connects fine to regular access poitns, but for some reason it won't connect to my android wifi adhoc sharing. I have it as dual boot with Windows and windows connects to it perfectly. From Ubuntu 9.10 it tries to connect... then just disconnects. Would be killer to be able to use it with my adhoc wifi sharing! I prefer my Ubuntu boot, rather than my windows one

I have a Skytex SX-E700 netbook with a Linux system and I cannot connect to my Time Warner home wireless system. It will connect but the IP address is invalid. Time Warner has no idea how to fix it. Has anyone had this problem and figured out how to fix it? By the way -- I can't find any system info on this little netbook and can't seen to get into anything that tells me what it contains.

Is there any way, how to make connecting monitor to my laptop as easy as it is e.g. in Windows? Just plug-n-play? I've just installed last version of Ubuntu and then connect monitor. After connecting monitor nothing happened (my laptop LCD doesn't get blinked and it doesn't try to use the monitor as a second one). So I went to Monitors configuration, where I saw "Mirror screens". I've unchecked "Same image in all monitors" and applied, also nothing happened. The monitor is still just black. Is there any application which would make this stuff easier for me? I have HP ProBook 5320m with some Intel HD graphic card inside and 21.5" LG W2240T-PN monitor.

Update: I found the name of my software that came with keyboard: Cubase Ai4
How can I connect usb-piano to my computer?
I recently bought a yamaha KX8 keyboard. It does not, however, have any built in speakers, but must be connected to something in order to play.
It come with a USB cord and some weird windows software, that must be running in order for the keyboard to make any sound. Now that software seems VERY complicated. I merely want to play the "piano" instrument.
I was wandering if there is some kind of SIMPLER software (maybe open source) that will allow me to connect this keyboard to either windows or linux os?

I need to be able to log into (with X enabled) my home computer (running OpenSuse 11.4) from my work computer(running Windows XP). I was originally going to setup ssh on my home computer but then realized that I wouldn't be able to get my desktop this way.At work, we use windows remote desktop connection to log into other computers within our network, but I'm planning on asking my manager if I'm allowed to login to my home computer. If he accepts, I need a method to actually make it happen.I looked at FreeNX which seemed awesome but it doesn't seem to have windows support. To an extent that I would like to only allow my work IP to be allowed to even try an login. The bridge to cross here is the fact that I'm connecting from windows.

I am running (K)Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 64bit on a Dell Latitude E6400, WiFi Card Intel 5100. Never had any problems with networking. Up to about 2 weeks ago. I do realize there have been quite a few posts with this network adaptor, but non really described the problem I have here.
What happens is that suddenly the WiFi LED on the computer stops blinking, the WiFi connection gets disrupted, and the device is not recognized anymore when checking ifconfig. Only cold restarting the machine helps then... it will work for a while (between 1 and 20 minutes) and then crash again.
On Windows 7 the card works perfectly fine. With Ubuntu 11.04 in Live CD mode I have the same effects (connection crashes after a while). Also tried booting an older kernel, no success.
My exact hardware:

I have just put a fresh version of Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit on my dell laptop, and I'm having a problem connecting to the internet. Before I installed the os, I tryed it out, as they let you do before a complete installation. While testing, I was asked if I wanted to install the proprietary drivers for the broadcom nic. When I did this, I was able to connect to the internet, however, after the install, I can not seem to update the drivers.
Maybe this was automatically done during installation and now there is another problem, but when I try to connect to my network, after I click connect, it disconnects right away and I am entering all the information correctly.

I connected my HP Pavillion laptop to a 1360x768 Vizio TV. On the TV it displays my laptop but on my laptop it has a black screen. How do I fix it so I can see my laptop screen on my laptop and on my TV at the same time?
I used to be able to do this with this TV as well as my friend's Samsung. I'm using a VGA connector. What should I do to have my laptop screen on my laptop and on my TV at the same time?

What is a good MTA (e.g. Postfix or something else) setup for a home computer behind a NAT, or a laptop that is not always online? I've read a lot of Postfix tutorials on how to set it up this way or that, but they are usually geared towards computers that are servers ie they
have a static IP
have a domain name
are always connected to the same network
My requirements are, I guess: Ability to redirect mail for local users to another server of my choosing. No listening for incoming SMTP connections - outgoing only Ability to route outgoing mail via an external SMTP server with authentication (and perhaps encryption) If not Postfix, I need an MTA which can queue up mails in case it temporarily has no internet connection.

I am trying to install wireless WiFi USB adapter LM-001 on to my machine. I downloaded the driver ZD1211LnxDrv_2_16_0_0 and followed the instruction rigorously. I'm new to linux and have an old laptop did clean reinstall windows 98 but no updates, and now burnt iso image to cd on other pc and used it to try running puppy linux 3.01 on the compaq armada laptop (spec 56.0MB RAM, AMD-K6(tm)-III Processor used space 645MB free 3.80GB). I chose this older version as I think I'd read that this is more suitable for older slow computers.
I am interested in running linux fully without windows 98 or with it. Running from CD I have to select Xvesa I think as Xorg didn't seem to work. Tried partitioning but in GParted find myself unable to amend the size of partitions - got yellow exclamation mark next to the partitions. What I see is: greyed out unallocated 7.38MB, then /dev/hda1 yellow exclamation mark filesystem unknown 206.72MB, /dev/hda2 yellow exclamation fat32 4.45GB.
It does not allow resizing when I try. Associated with the yellow exclamation marks is the warning "unable to read the contents of this filesystem! Because of this some operations may be unavailable. I have done a defragment of C in windows already. (Also haven't been able to connect to internet on linnux with my wireless card.)

NetworkManager and its applet (package network-manager-gnome) installed, I can connect to my Wi-Fi network, but after reboot a dialog asking for passphrase for keys appeared and even after entering correct passphrase NetworkManager does not connect to the Wi-Fi, so I need to connect it manually.

I've happened across a wireless router that has a gateway address of 192.168.0.1 and allots IPs from 192.168.0.64-255. My laptop wouldn't connect to it automatically, so I was playing around and found that it needed 0.x instead of 1.x. I thought the network manager on ubuntu would have figured that out?! Now its a separate story that the router happens to have no admin password

I am working with ubuntu (gnome) 10.10 maverick 64 bit on a HP pavilion 2713ca. I have installed the Broadcom sta driver for a BCM4328 wifi driver. After setting wpa security with my password, the wifi network worked for many weeks. However, in the last few days it does not connect no more. I have tried to reinstall SSID. And I have checked to see if eth1 was still there:
root@max-HP-Pavilion-dv2700-Notebook-PC:/home/max# iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.

I am having a bit of a problem connecting to a dynamic WEP WiFi network.
Code:
Apr 15 11:39:31 MyComputer NetworkManager[943]: <info> Activation (wlan0/wireless): access point 'MyUniversityWifiSSID' has security, but secrets are required.
Apr 15 11:39:31 MyComputer wpa_supplicant[1002]: CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTED - Disconnect event - remove keys
[Code]....
I have googeled that specific error about the WEP line, and it *was* a bug at one time, but according to the bug tracker, it has been fixed. Not so, me thinks.
So, does the specific error above look familiar and does anybody know of a way to fix it?

im using minimal ubuntu 10.04 and im having trouble connecting to wifi using the terminal. the wifi worked perfectly on the desktop version. i followed this guide [URL] and looks like then i used '/etc/init.d/networking restart' and get this now it seems ive disabled wlan0 as $ sudo lshw -C shows
i tried to enable it again by using 'sudo ifup wlan0' but i get a few errors i think the 2nd errors may be because i tried to download another driver for the wireless using 'wget [URL] and then 'dpkg -i rt3090-dkms_2.3.1.3-0ubuntu0~ppa1_all.deb'

I've recently acquired an old HP Pavilion ZT3000 and have decided to install Slackware, but I'm having trouble with the whole rc.inet1 configuration stuff. I've been able to connect to the internet manually with the following command:
Code: iwconfig eth0 essid [access-point-name] key restricted [my-wep-key]
(...and then use "dhcpcd" to get an ip address.)
As you can see, eth0 is my wireless interface. Not exactly sure why (the comp has a IR port, wifi and Ethernet.) I'm using a shared WEP key (I know the security implications of WEP). The key being shared is the reason restricted is a parameter in the iwconfig command. I've been trying to get it working through /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 but I can't seem to setup rc.inet1.config correctly I'm not sure where to set the key to "shared"
I've searched the forums and I could use the working iwconfig command with ./bash_profile as a startup script. This has the problem I need sudo (ie setup /etc/sudoer), which seems like a lot of work, when rc.inet should work. And it also has the problem of having to enter my password THREE times (login, sudo iwconfig and for sudo dhcpcd) which is horrible (and I don't even know how it would work when I set X to begin on startup again). I probably could also install "wicd" but having to ferry across files and trying to setup things without the internet is a pain.

I first booted into Fedora and it connected to the Interneting was working brilliantly. I then booted into windows for a session of TF2. After I booted back into Fedora, it wouldn't connect to my network.I did fix this by doing a hard reset on my router, BT homehub. It's just that I don't want to reset and apply custom settings all the time.
